Sandwich-type plates are widely used in present technical structures. A variety of special sandwich theories and composite laminated plate theories (CLT, FSDT, HSDT) are available for calculating plate deflections. Since the problem of assessing these theories still exists, a new test apparatus for multilayered composite and sandwich plates was developed. Different types of sandwich plates were used in quasistatic multidimensional deformation tests. The article considers some of the special characteristics of the free vibrations of a steel cantilevered plate, with the formation of a polymer coating on the plate. It compares the results of an experimental investigation of the effect of internal stresses in the coating on the vibrations and on the static bending of the plate. The scale effect of the acoustic Young's modulus E of oriented polymer fibers has been experimentally revealed. If the fiber length L is smaller than its critical value L0, the modulus decreases proportionally to the logarithm of the fiber length. An increasing temperature causes a proportional increase in the slope dE/d(In L). Conclusions Triangular sandwich finite elements (MPLW30) with 30 DOF have been developed for the static and free vibration analysis of sandwich plates with thin faces and low core shear modules. Use of the quasilinearization method is proposed for the solution of coupled dynamic (particularly, quasistatic) problems of thermoviscoelasticity under cyclic loading. The coupled problems under consideration here include vibrations of a one-dimensional body (beam, plate, shell) and shear vibrations of a hollow cylinder made of a material with temperature-dependent properties, with the principle of temperature-time analogy applicable in the latter case. The characteristics of fracture and strength of a composite piezoceramic plate with defects in the form of cracks and holes situated in both of the plate components are investigated. The corresponding boundary-value problems of electroelasticity are reduced to systems of singular integral equations by constructing integral representations of the complex potentials. Previosly noncontact surfaces of polystyrene (PS) and poly(2,6-dimethyl 1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) were self-bonded in a lap shear joint geometry below the glass transition temperature Tg The joints were then fractured in tension at room temperature and the contact area was analyzed by means of scanning electron microscopy. Zones of plastic deformation were revealed on the surfaces of PS and PPO which had been bonded at Tg–33 and Tg–70°C, respectively, thus indicating interdiffusion across the interface. This result points to the lower Tg of the surface layer as compared with that of the bulk sample, in agreement with our previous studies. The effect of the sign of the shear stresses on the shear strength has been investigated for a glass-reinforced plastic of the SVAM type with various ratios of the longitudinal and transverse reinforcement in shear in the plane of reinforcement in axes turned through 45° relative to the direction of reinforcement. More than 80 tubularspecimens were tested. Experimental results of model speciments in which FRP rods fractured due to local deformation at a crack intersection in a concrete member were analyzed by a 3D nonlinear finite element method in which orthogonal anisotropy of the FRP rod was considered. The analytical results indicated that accurate prediction of shear modulus of the FRP rod and size of concrete wedge cone failure around the FRP rod was significant to predict deformation and fracture of the FRP rod. The results of short-term creep tests of a layered glass fiber/polyester resin plastic in tension at angles of 90, 70, and 45° to the direction of the principal fiber orientation are presented. The applicability of the principle of time-temperature analogy for the prediction of long-term creep of the composite and its structural components is revealed. Displacements and transverse normal stresses in sandwich plates and masses have been approximated by the Ambartsumyan iterative approach to constructing mathematical models of the stress-strain state of sandwich structures. A linear distribution of the displacements in the sandwich structure is set up as the first step of the iterative process, while in the subsequent steps the displacement approximations with higher-order polynomials are obtained. The approximation of the compression stresses is based on Hooke's law using the expression of the tangential displacements in the second step and the normal displacements in the third step of the iterative process. Two shear functions are introduced. The finite element is rectangular and has four nodes. The number of degrees of freedom of finite elements is independent of the quantity of the layers that may be orthotropic. The finite element allows us to simulate delamination by a thin low-modulus interlayer. In doing so, the quantity of the layers increases, while the order of the resolving set of equations does not grow. A number of numerical experiments were carried out. It has been shown that the delamination can greatly increase the level of the stresses in the structure. This effect is especially significant for thin structures. The modes and frequencies of small natural vibrations in a cavity of thin plates are investigated on the basis of the method of finite elements in displacements. The effect of the rigidity characteristics of a material on the natural frequencies and modes of vibrations of flat cantilever vanes whose tapered edge is restrained is studied. An example is given of the use of the finite-element method to determine the natural vibrations of an orthotropic plate in the shape of an airplane wing. Quadrangular and modified triangular bending finite elements are used to simulate a continuous system. The Pagano exact solution for an infinite plate on a simple support is extended in such a way that artitrary boundary conditions can be prescribed. Based on Bufler's approach, the solution is obtained with a modified Fourier transformation that leads to a set of ordinary inhomogeneous differential equations. It can be shown that the Pagano solution is included as a special case of periodic boundary conditions, whereas the effect of nonperiodic boundary conditions is represented by particular terms. The frequency and forms of natural vibrations of a hinged beam-strip fabricated from a composite material with small-scale curved structures have been investigated using the plate theory in the framework of the Timoshenko hypothesis. The mechanical relationships of the composites are described by the Akbarov and Guz continuum theory. Using the corresponding variational principle, a method of solution of the considered problem is presented. Specific numerical investigations have been carried out for the case when the strip material consists of alternating equidistantly located and curved isotropic layers. The effect of existence of the curving in the beam-strip structure on its frequencies and forms of natural vibrations is studied. A new approach to the generalized self-consistent method [1,2] has been developed for problems of the statistical mechanics of composites with composite or hollow inclusions. The approach can reduce the problem of predicting the effective elastic properties of composites to a simpler averaged problem of a single, composite, or hollow inclusion with inhomogeneous elastic surrounding in a homogeneous effective elastic medium. Based on refined equations of the Timoshenko-type shell theory, the contact stresses in torsion of a two-layer cylindrical shell with an adhesive interlayer are numerically studied. The effect of the geometric and physical-mechanical parameters of the load-carrying layers and adhesive interlayer of the shell on the distribution of the interlaminar tangential stress is analyzed.
