Based on our theoretical and experimental work carried out during the last decade, our understanding of the thermodynamics and the kinetics of formation and decomposition of gas hydrates is presented. Hydrate formation is modelled as a crystallization process where two distinct processes (nucleation and growth) are involved. Prior to the nucleation the concentration of the gas in the liquid water exceeds that corresponding to the vapor-liquid equilibrium. This supersaturation is attributed to the extensive structural orientation in the liquid water and is necessary for the phase change to occur. The growth of the hydrate nuclei or the decomposition of a hydrate particle are modelled as two-step procedures. Only one adjustable parameter for each hydrate forming gas is required for the intrinsic rate of formation or decomposition. In addition the inhibiting effects of electrolytes or methanol on hydrate formation are discussed and experimental data on methane gas hydrate formation in the presence of aqueous solutions of 3% NaCl and 3% NaCl + 3% KCI, are presented along with the predicted values. Finally, the relevence of the ideas to the technological implications of gas hydrates as well as areas where future research is needed are discussed.Dedicated to Dr D. W. Davidson in honor of his great contributions to the sciences of inclusion phenomena.  相似文献

Gas hydrates are crystalline structures comprising a guest molecule surrounded by a water cage, and are particularly relevant due to their natural occurrence in the deep sea and in permafrost areas. Low molecular weight molecules such as methane and carbon dioxide can be sequestered into that cage at suitable temperatures and pressures, facilitating the transition to the solid phase. While the composition and structure of gas hydrates appear to be well understood, their formation and dissociation mechanisms, along with the dynamics and kinetics associated with those processes, remain ambiguous. In order to take advantage of gas hydrates as an energy resource (e.g., methane hydrate), as a sequestration matrix in (for example) CO2 storage, or for chemical energy conservation/storage, a more detailed molecular level understanding of their formation and dissociation processes, as well as the chemical, physical, and biological parameters that affect these processes, is required. Spectroscopic techniques appear to be most suitable for analyzing the structures of gas hydrates (sometimes in situ), thus providing access to such information across the electromagnetic spectrum. A variety of spectroscopic methods are currently used in gas hydrate research to determine the composition, structure, cage occupancy, guest molecule position, and binding/formation/dissociation mechanisms of the hydrate. To date, the most commonly applied techniques are Raman spectroscopy and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Diffraction methods such as neutron and X-ray diffraction are used to determine gas hydrate structures, and to study lattice expansions. Furthermore, UV-vis spectroscopic techniques and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) have assisted in structural studies of gas hydrates. Most recently, waveguide-coupled mid-infrared spectroscopy in the 3–20 μm spectral range has demonstrated its value for in situ studies on the formation and dissociation of gas hydrates. This comprehensive review summarizes the importance of spectroscopic analytical techniques to our understanding of the structure and dynamics of gas hydrate systems, and highlights selected examples that illustrate the utility of these individual methods.  相似文献

An inherent problem with natural gas production or transmission is the formation of gas hydrates, which can lead to safety hazards for production/transportation systems, and substantial economic risks. Hydrate inhibition with different inhibitors such as, methanol, ethylene glycol (EG), triethylene glycol (TEG), and sodium chloride solution continues to play a critical role in many operations. An understanding of when the hydrates form in the presence of these hydrate inhibitors, is therefore necessary to overcome hydrate problems. Several thermodynamic models have been proposed for predicting the hydrate formation conditions in aqueous solutions containing methanol/glycols and electrolytes. However, available models have limitations that include the types of liquid, compositions of fluids, and inhibitors used. The aim of this study is to develop a simple-to-use correlation for accurate prediction of hydrate-forming pressures of pure alkanes in the presence of different hydrate inhibitors, where the obtained results illustrate good agreement with the reported experimental data.  相似文献

Gas hydrates are ice-like crystalline compounds, which form through a combination of water and suitably sized guest molecules under low temperature and elevated pressure conditions. These solid compounds give rise to problems in the natural gas oil industry because they can plug pipelines and process equipment. Low dosage hydrate inhibitors are a recently developed hydrate control technology, which can be more cost-effective than traditional practices such as methanol and glycols. The kinetics of hydrate growth has been modeled by numerous authors who have measured the gas consumption rate during hydrate formation in batch agitator reactors.  相似文献

Natural gas hydrates are considered as ideal alternative energy resources for the future, and the relevant basic and applied research has become more attractive in recent years. The influence of guest molecules on the hydrate crystal lattice parameters is of great significances to the understanding of hydrate structural characteristics, hydrate formation/decomposition mechanisms, and phase stability behaviors. In this study, we test a series of artificial hydrate samples containing different guest molecules (e.g. methane, ethane, propane, iso-butane, carbon dioxide, tetrahydrofuran, methane + 2, 2-dimethylbutane, and methane + methyl cyclohexane) by a low-temperature powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD). Results show that PXRD effectively elucidates structural characteristics of the natural gas hydrate samples, including crystal lattice parameters and structure types. The relationships between guest molecule sizes and crystal lattice parameters reveal that different guest molecules have different controlling behaviors on the hydrate types and crystal lattice constants. First, a positive correlation between the lattice constants and the van der Waals diameters of homologous hydrocarbon gases was observed in the single-guest-component hydrates. Small hydrocarbon homologous gases, such as methane and ethane, tended to form sI hydrates, whereas relatively larger molecules, such as propane and iso-butane, generated sⅡ hydrates. The hydrate crystal lattice constants increased with increasing guest molecule size. The types of hydrates composed of oxygen-containing guest molecules (such as CO2 and THF) were also controlled by the van der Waals diameters. However, no positive correlation between the lattice constants and the van der Waals diameters of guest molecules in hydrocarbon hydrates was observed for CO2 hydrate and THF hydrate, probably due to the special interactions between the guest oxygen atoms and hydrate "cages". Furthermore, the influences of the macromolecules and auxiliary small molecules on the lengths of the different crystal axes of the sH hydrates showed inverse trends. Compared to the methane + 2, 2-dimethylbutane hydrate sample, the length of the a-axis direction of the methane + methyl cyclohexane hydrate sample was slightly smaller, whereas the length of the c-axis direction was slightly longer. The crystal a-axis length of the sH hydrate sample formed with nitrogen molecules was slightly longer, whereas the c-axis was shorter than that of the methane + 2, 2-dimethylbutane hydrate sample at the same temperature.  相似文献

Structural, dynamic, and thermodynamic features of double hydrates of xenon and nitrous oxide are calculated. Thermodynamic stability regions of these hydrates are found. At the atmospheric pressure the xenon hydrate is in the equilibrium with the gas phase at temperatures up to 263 K, whereas at these pressures the nitrous oxide hydrate decomposes already at 218 K. A strong dependence of the equilibrium temperatures and pressures of the formation/decomposition of double nitrous oxide and xenon hydrates on the composition of their mixture in the gas phase is shown.  相似文献

One of the main challenges in deep-water drilling is gas-hydrate plugs, which make the drilling unsafe. Some oil-based drilling fluids(OBDF) that would be used for deep-water drilling in the South China Sea were tested to investigate the characteristics of gas-hydrate formation, agglomeration and inhibition by an experimental system under the temperature of 4 ?C and pressure of 20 MPa,which would be similar to the case of 2000 m water depth. The results validate the hydrate shell formation model and show that the water cut can greatly influence hydrate formation and agglomeration behaviors in the OBDF.The oleophobic effect enhanced by hydrate shell formation which weakens or destroys the interfacial films effect and the hydrophilic effect are the dominant agglomeration mechanism of hydrate particles. The formation of gas hydrates in OBDF is easier and quicker than in water-based drilling fluids in deep-water conditions of low temperature and high pressure because the former is a W/O dispersive emulsion which means much more gas-water interfaces and nucleation sites than the later.Higher ethylene glycol concentrations can inhibit the formation of gas hydrates and to some extent also act as an anti-agglomerant to inhibit hydrates agglomeration in the OBDF.  相似文献

Because of availability, as well as economical and environmental considerations, natural gas is projected to be the premium fuel of the 21st century. Natural gas production involves risk of the shut down of onshore and offshore operations because of blockage from hydrates formed from coproduced water and hydrate-forming species in natural gas. Industry practice has been usage of thermodynamic inhibitors such as alcohols often in significant amounts, which have undesirable environmental and safety impacts. Thermodynamic inhibitors affect bulk-phase properties and inhibit hydrate formation. An alternative is changing surface properties through usage of polymers and surfactants, effective at 0.5 to 3 weight % of coproduced water. One group of low dosage hydrate inhibitors (LDHI) are kinetic inhibitors, which affect nucleation rate and growth. A second group of LDHI are antiagglomerants, which prevent agglomeration of small hydrate crystallites. Despite great potential, work on hydrate antiagglomeration is very limited. This work centers on the effect of small amounts of alcohol cosurfactant in mixtures of two vastly different antiagglomerants. We use a model oil, water, and tetrahydrofuran as a hydrate-forming species. Results show that alcohol cosurfactants may help with antiagglomeration when traditional antiagglomerants alone are ineffective. Specifically, as low as 0.5 wt. % methanol cosurfactant used in this study is shown to be effective in antiagglomeration. Without the cosurfactant there will be agglomeration independent of the AA concentration. To our knowledge, this is the first report of alcohol cosurfactants in hydrate antiagglomerants. It is also shown that a rhamnolipid biosurfactant is effective down to only 0.5 wt. % in such mixtures, yet a quaternary ammonium chloride salt, i. e., quat, results in hydrate slurries down to 0.01 wt. %. However, biochemical surfactants are less toxic and biodegradable, and thus their use may prove beneficial even if at concentrations higher than chemical surfactants.  相似文献

Pipeline blockage by gas hydrates is a serious problem in the petroleum industry. Low-dosage inhibitors have been developed for its cost-effective and environmentally acceptable characteristics. In a 1.072-L reactor with methane, ethane and propane gas mixture under the pressure of about 8.5 MPa at 4 °C, hydrate formation was investigated with low-dosage hydrate inhibitors PVP and GHI1, the change of the compressibility factor and gas composition in the gas phase was analyzed, the gas contents in hydrates were compared with PVP and GHI1 added, and the inhibition mechanism of GHI1 was discussed. The results show that PVP and GHI1 could effectively inhibit the growth of gas hydrates but not nucleation. Under the experimental condition with PVP added, methane and ethane occupied the small cavities of the hydrate crystal unit and the ability of ethane entering into hydrate cavities was weaker than that of methane. GHI1 could effectively inhibit molecules which could more readily form hydrates. The ether and hydroxy group of diethylene glycol monobutyl ether have the responsibility for stronger inhibition ability of GHI1 than PVP.  相似文献

This study presents the influences of additional guest molecules such as C2H6, C3H8, and CO2 on methane hydrates regarding their thermal behavior. For this purpose, the onset temperatures of decomposition as well as the enthalpies of dissociation were determined for synthesized multicomponent gas hydrates in the range of 173-290 K at atmospheric pressure using a Calvet heat-flow calorimeter. Furthermore, the structures and the compositions of the hydrates were obtained using X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy as well as hydrate prediction program calculations. It is shown that the onset temperature of decomposition of both sI and sII hydrates tends to increase with an increasing number of larger guest molecules than methane occupying the large cavities. The results of the calorimetric measurements also indicate that the molar dissociation enthalpy depends on the guest-to-cavity size ratio and the actual concentration of the guest occupying the large cavities of the hydrate. To our knowledge, this is the first study that observes this behavior using calorimetrical measurements on mixed gas hydrates at these temperature and pressure conditions.  相似文献

Neutron diffraction studies with hydrogen/deuterium isotope substitution measurements are performed to investigate the water structure at the early, medium, and late periods of methane clathrate hydrate formation and decomposition. These measurements are coupled with simultaneous gas consumption measurements to track the formation of methane hydrate from a gas/water mixture, and then the complete decomposition of hydrate. Empirical potential structure refinement computer simulations are used to analyze the neutron diffraction data and extract from the data the water structure in the bulk methane hydrate solution. The results highlight the significant changes in the water structure of the remaining liquid at various stages of hydrate formation and decomposition, and give further insight into the way in which hydrates form. The results also have important implications on the memory effect, suggesting that the water structure in the presence of hydrate crystallites is significantly different at equivalent stages of forming compared to decomposing. These results are in sharp contrast to the previously reported cases when all remaining hydrate crystallites are absent from the solution. For these systems there is no detectable change in the water structure or the methane hydration shell before hydrate formation and after decomposition. Based on the new results presented in this paper, it is clear that the local water structure is affected by the presence of hydrate crystallites, which may in turn be responsible for the "history" or "memory" effect where the production of hydrate from a solution of formed and then subsequently melted hydrate is reportedly much quicker than producing hydrate from a fresh water/gas mixture.  相似文献

Near infrared spectroscopy and principal component analysis (PCA) have been used for monitoring interactions between THF hydrates and naphthenic acids and other surface active molecules. The hydrate particles are primarily hydrophilic and are preferably localized in the water phase. Interactions with surface active molecules may hydrophobize the hydrate surface sufficiently to disperse them into a paraffinic n-decane phase. Hydrate particles dispersed into the n-decane give rise to light scattering accompanied by a baseline shift in the NIR spectra. These observations serve as proof of such interactions taking place and may in turn contribute to the understanding of natural transportability in pipelines of hydrates in multiphase flow.  相似文献

Nucleation of gas hydrates remains a poorly understood phenomenon, despite its importance as a critical step in understanding the performance and mode of action of low dosage hydrate inhibitors. We present here a detailed analysis of the structural and mechanistic processes by which gas hydrates nucleate in a molecular dynamics simulation of dissolved methane at a methane/water interface. It was found that hydrate initially nucleates into a phase consistent with none of the common bulk crystal structures, but containing structural units of all of them. The process of water cage formation has been found to correlate strongly with the collective arrangement of methane molecules.  相似文献

Gas hydrates now are expected to be one of the most important future unconventional energy resources. In this paper, researches on gas hydrate exploitation in laboratory and field were reviewed and discussed from the aspects of energy efficiency. Different exploiting methods and different types of hydrate reservoir were selected to study their effects on energy efficiencies. Both laboratory studies and field tests have shown that the improved technologies can help to increase efficiency for gas hydrate exploitation. And it also showed the trend that gas hydrate exploitation started to change from permafrost to marine. Energy efficiency ratio(EER) and energy return on energy invested(EROI) were introduced as an indicator of efficiency for natural gas hydrate exploitation. An energy-efficient hydrate production process, called "Hydrate Chain Energy System(HCES)", including treatment of flue gas, replacement of CH4 with CO2, separation of CO2 from CH4, and storage and transportation of CH4 in hydrate form, was proposed for future natural gas hydrate exploitation. In the meanwhile, some problems, such as mechanism of CO2 replacement, mechanism of CO2 separation,CH4 storage and transportation are also needed to be solved for increasing the energy efficiency of gas hydrate exploitation.  相似文献

Decomposition curves of double ionic clathrate hydrates of tetrabutylammonium fluoride with helium, neon, hydrogen and argon were studied at pressures up to 800 MPa. Formation of double hydrates with helium, neon and hydrogen does not lead to any significant increase of the temperatures of decomposition of these hydrates; at high temperatures the hydrates may decompose even at lower temperatures than the hydrate of pure tetraalkylammonium salt does. Decomposition temperatures of double hydrates with argon in all cases were 4–8 °C higher in comparison with the decomposition temperature of ionic clathrate hydrates of tetrabutylammonium fluoride. We suppose that this behavior is caused by simultaneous effect of three factors on hydrate decomposition temperature: (1) partial filling of the small cavities in the framework of the hydrate with water molecules, (2) weakness of the van der Waals interactions between the gas molecules and the host water molecules, and (3) dissolution of helium, hydrogen and neon in the solution of tetrabutylammonium salt causing a decrease of melting temperatures of the hydrates formed from these solutions.  相似文献

An inherent problem with natural gas production or transmission is the formation of gas hydrates, which can lead to safety hazards to production/ transportation systems and to substantial economic risks. Therefore, an understanding of conditions where hydrates form is necessary to overcome hydrate related issues. Over the years, several models requiring more complicated and longer computations have been proposed for the prediction of hydrate formation conditions of natural gases. For these reasons, it is essential to develop a reliable and simple-to-use method for oil and gas practitioners. The purpose of this study is to formulate a novel empirical correlation for rapid estimation of hydrate formation condition of sweet natural gases. The developed correlation holds for wide range of temperatures (265–298 K), pressures (1200 to 40000 kPa) and molecular weights (16−29). New proposed correlation shows consistently accurate results across proposed pressure, temperature and molecular weight ranges. This consistency could not be matched by any of the widely accepted existing correlations within the investigated range. For all conditions, new correlation showed average absolute deviation to be less than 0.2% and provided much better results than the widely accepted existing correlations.  相似文献
