A reliable method for the calibration of the measurement volume cross-section has been developed, in order to correct the particle size distribution measured by a phase-Doppler anemometer (PDA) with respect to the counting bias in favour of the large particles. Furthermore, this method allows the measurement of particle concentration or mass flux with high accuracy in two-dimensional two-phase flows. A comparison of the mass flow rate obtained by the integration of the mass flux measured in a water spray by applying this method with the global mass balance showed a difference of about 5%.The basis of the present method is the detection of the amplitude of the filtered Doppler signal in connection with the particle size measured by the PDA. The detection process is performed using an electronic circuit which validates the Doppler burst and has additionally the advantage that the highest amplitude portion of the burst can be selected for digitizing, acquisition and subsequent processing. Therefore, this method has the great advantage that the processed part of the burst has the highest signal-to-noise ratio which results in high accuracies for frequency and phase estimation.  相似文献

Numerical simulation of primary atomization at high Reynolds number is still a challenging problem. In this work a multiscale approach for the numerical simulation of liquid jet primary atomization is applied, using an Eulerian-Lagrangian coupling. In this approach, an Eulerian volume of fluid (VOF) method, where the Reynolds stresses are closed by a Reynolds stress model is applied to model the global spreading of the liquid jet. The formation of the micro-scale droplets, which are usually smaller than the grid spacing in the computational domain, is modelled by an energy-based sub-grid model. Where the disruptive forces (turbulence and surface pressure) of turbulent eddies near the surface of the jet overcome the capillary forces, droplets are released with the local properties of the corresponding eddies. The dynamics of the generated droplets are modelled using Lagrangian particle tracking (LPT). A numerical coupling between the Eulerian and Lagrangian frames is then established via source terms in conservation equations. As a follow-up study to our investigation in Saeedipour et al. (2016a), the present paper aims at modelling drop formation from liquid jets at high Reynolds numbers in the atomization regime and validating the simulation results against in-house experiments. For this purpose, phase-Doppler anemometry (PDA) was used to measure the droplet size and velocity distributions in sprays produced by water jet breakup at different Reynolds numbers in the atomization regime. The spray properties, such as droplet size spectra, local and global Sauter-mean drop sizes and velocity distributions obtained from the simulations are compared with experiment at various locations with very good agreement.  相似文献

A water-air impinging jets atomizer is investigated in this study, which consists of flow visualization using high speed photography and mean droplet size and velocity distribution measurements of the spray using Phase Doppler Anemometry (PDA). Topological structures and break up details of the generated spray in the far and near fields are presented with and without air jet and for an impinging angle of 90°. Spray angle increases with the water jet velocity, air flow rate and impinging angle. PDA results indicate that droplet size is smallest in the spray center, with minimum value of Sauter mean diameter (SMD) of 50 µm at the air flow rate of Qm = 13.50 g/min. SMD of droplets increases towards the spray outer region gradually to about 120 µm. The mean droplet velocity component W along the air-jet axis is highest in the spray center and decreases gradually with increasing distance from the spray center. SMD normalized by the air nozzle diameter is found firstly to decrease with gas-to-liquid mass ratio (GLR) and air-to-liquid momentum ratio (ALMR) and then remain almost constant. Its increasing with aerodynamic Weber number indicates an exponential variation. The study sheds light on the performance of water-air impinging jets atomizers providing useful information for future CFD simulation works.  相似文献

In dense two-phase flows, it is well known that phase Doppler anemometry is not well suited for the measurement of concentration and mass flux. Laser diagnostics based on fluorescence can provide the dispersed phase concentration but without discrimination between size classes. We present a new method of coupling the two techniques, in order to extract the local value of concentration and flux per size class. The method is applied to an axisymmetric turbulent jet, laden with polydispersed droplets 1–90 μm. Droplet concentration profiles are obtained in the development zone (x/d 0 < 20) of the dense jet and are used to study droplet dispersion. The results are then introduced into the momentum transport equations to analyze the influence of droplets on the carrier phase. We show that the local decrease of the rate of variation of mean momentum with mass loading is due both to an increase in interfacial transfer rate and to a decrease in turbulent diffusion effects. This paper aims at investigating the detailed structure of turbulent non-reacting dilute spray flows using advanced laser diagnostics. A simple spray jet nozzle is designed to produce a two-phase slender shear flow in a co-flowing air stream with well-defined boundary conditions. The carrier flow is made intentionally simple and easy to model so that the focus can be placed on the important aspects of droplet dispersion and evaporation, as well as turbulence–droplet interactions. Phase Doppler interferometry is employed to record droplet quantities, while planar laser-induced fluorescence imaging is applied separately to obtain acetone vapour data. Measurements are conducted for four acetone spray jets in air at several axial stations starting from the nozzle exit. The combined liquid and vapour mass fluxes of acetone integrated across the jet at downstream locations agree satisfactorily with the total mass flow rate of acetone injected.  相似文献

Dispersed water droplets are often seen in environmental air flows in rain, cloud, mist, sea spray and so on. It is therefore of great importance to precisely estimate heat transfer between water droplets and atmospheric air in developing a reliable climate model. The purpose of this study is to fabricate the measurement system for the temperature of a small water droplet in air flow under the controlled relative humidity condition and to investigate the effect of relative humidity on heat transfer across the surface of an evaporating water droplet in air flow. The results show that the droplet temperature decreases in the low-relative-humidity condition, whereas it increases in the high-relative-humidity condition. Nusselt number on the droplet surface is not affected by the relative humidity.  相似文献

A flux reconstruction technique is presented to perform aeroacoustic computations using implicit high-order spatial schemes on multiblock structured grids with nonconforming interfaces. The use of such grids, with mesh spacing discontinuities across the block interfaces, eases local mesh refinements, simplifies the mesh generation process, and thus facilitates the computation of turbulent flows. In this work, the spatial discretization consists of sixth-order finite-volume implicit schemes with low-dispersion and low-dissipation properties. The flux reconstruction is based on the combination of noncentered schemes with local interpolations to define ghost cells and compute flux values at the grid interfaces. The flow variables in the ghost cells are calculated from the flow field in the grid cells using a meshless interpolation with radial basis functions. In this study, the flux reconstruction is applied to both plane and curved nonconforming interfaces. The performance of the method is first evaluated by performing two-dimensional simulations of the propagation of an acoustic pulse and of the convection of a vortex on Cartesian and wavy grids. No significant spurious noise is produced at the grid interfaces. The applicability of the flux reconstruction to a three-dimensional computation is then demonstrated by simulating a jet at a Mach number of 0.9 and a diameter-based Reynolds number of 4×105 on a Cartesian grid. The nonconforming grid interface located downstream of the jet potential core does not appreciably affect the flow development and the jet sound field, while reducing the number of mesh points by a factor of approximately two.  相似文献

In high-velocity open channel flows, the measurements of air–water flow properties are complicated by the strong interactions between the flow turbulence and the entrained air. In the present study, an advanced signal processing of traditional single- and dual-tip conductivity probe signals is developed to provide further details on the air–water turbulent level, time and length scales. The technique is applied to turbulent open channel flows on a stepped chute conducted in a large-size facility with flow Reynolds numbers ranging from 3.8E+5 to 7.1E+5. The air water flow properties presented some basic characteristics that were qualitatively and quantitatively similar to previous skimming flow studies. Some self-similar relationships were observed systematically at both macroscopic and microscopic levels. These included the distributions of void fraction, bubble count rate, interfacial velocity and turbulence level at a macroscopic scale, and the auto- and cross-correlation functions at the microscopic level. New correlation analyses yielded a characterisation of the large eddies advecting the bubbles. Basic results included the integral turbulent length and time scales. The turbulent length scales characterised some measure of the size of large vortical structures advecting air bubbles in the skimming flows, and the data were closely related to the characteristic air–water depth Y 90. In the spray region, present results highlighted the existence of an upper spray region for C > 0.95–0.97 in which the distributions of droplet chord sizes and integral advection scales presented some marked differences with the rest of the flow.  相似文献

The present study is concerned with adopting of a Talbot effect-based technique for analyzing flows with random phase inhomogeneities. It is shown that this method is a powerful tool for diagnostics of turbulent flows. The potential of the technique is illustrated by measuring mean and fluctuating values of admixture concentration of two-dimensional turbulent helium jet issuing into the ambient air. Averaged air and helium concentrations throughout the flow field are determined using local light refraction measurements with a high spatial resolution from a long-exposed Talbot image of the jet. The analysis of light intensity distributions in light spots of a Talbot-image shows that the jet turbulence is inhomogeneous and anisotropic. Quantitative information on rms fluctuations of concentration gradients throughout the flow field is obtained from local photometric measurements at the Talbot light spots.  相似文献

Investigation of the mixing process is one of the main issues in chemical engineering and combustion and the configuration of a jet into a cross-flow (JCF) is often employed for this purpose. Experimental data are gained for the symmetry plane in a JCF-arrangement of an air flow using a combination of particle image velocimetry (PIV) with laser-induced fluorescence (LIF). The experimental data with thoroughly measured boundary conditions are complemented with direct numerical simulations, which are based on idealized boundary conditions. Two similar cases are studied with a fixed jet-to-cross-flow velocity ratio of 3.5 and variable cross-flow Reynolds numbers equal to 4,120 and 8,240; in both cases the jet issues from the pipe at laminar conditions. This leads to a laminar-to-turbulent transition, which depends on the Reynolds number and occurs quicker for the case with higher Reynolds number in both experiments and simulations as well. It was found that the Reynolds number only slightly affects the jet trajectory, which in the case with the higher Reynolds number is slightly deeper. It is attributed to the changed boundary layer shape of the cross-flow. Leeward streamlines bend toward the jet and are responsible for the strong entrainment of cross-flow fluid into the jet. Velocity components are compared for the two Reynolds numbers at the leeward side at positions where strongest entrainment is present and a pressure minimum near the jet trajectory is found. The numerical simulations showed that entrainment is higher for the case with the higher Reynolds number. The latter is attributed to the earlier transition in this case. Fluid entrainment of the jet in cross-flow is more than twice stronger than for a similar flow of a jet issuing into a co-flowing stream. This comparison is made along the trajectory of the two jets at a distance of 5.5 jet diameters downstream and is based on the results from the direct numerical simulations and recently published experiments of a straight jet into a co-flow. Mixing is further studied by means of second-order statistics of the passive scalar variance and the Reynolds fluxes. Windward and leeward sides of the jet exhibit different signs for the time-averaged streamwise Reynolds flux 〈v x c′〉. The large coherent structures which contribute to this effect are investigated by means of timely correlated instantaneous PIV-LIF camera snapshots and their contribution to the average statistics of 〈v x c′〉 are discussed. The discussion on mixing capabilities of the jet in cross-flow is supported by simulation results showing the instantaneous three-dimensional coherent structures defined in terms of the pressure fluctuations.  相似文献

The air and water flow distribution are experimentally studied for a round header – flat tube geometry simulating a parallel flow heat exchanger. The number of branch flat tube is 30. The effects of tube outlet direction, tube protrusion depth as well as mass flux, and quality are investigated. The flow at the header inlet is identified as annular. For the downward flow configuration, the water flow distribution is significantly affected by the tube protrusion depth. For flush-mounted configuration, most of the water flows through frontal part of the header. As the protrusion depth increases, more water is forced to the rear part of the header. The effect of mass flux or quality is qualitatively the same as that of the protrusion depth. Increase of the mass flux or quality forces the water to rear part of the header. For the upward flow configuration, however, most of the water flows through rear part of the header. The protrusion depth, mass flux, or quality does not significantly alter the flow pattern. Possible explanations are provided based on the flow visualization results. Negligible difference on the water flow distribution was observed between the parallel and the reverse flow configuration.  相似文献

A theoretical model is developed in the present study to simulate droplet motion and the evolution of droplet size distribution (DSD) in two-phase air/dispersed water spray flows. The model takes into account several processes which influence DSD and droplet trajectory: droplet collision and coalescence, evaporation and cooling, gravitational settling, and turbulent dispersion of dispersed phase. The DSDs determined by the model at different locations in a two-phase flow are evaluated by comparing them to experimental observations obtained in an icing wind tunnel. The satisfactory coincidence between simulation and experimental results proves that the model is reliable when modeling two-phase flows under icing conditions. The model is applied for two particular examples in which the modification of DSD is calculated in two-phase flows under conditions describing in-cloud icing and freezing drizzle.  相似文献

This paper reports on progress in developing CFD simulations of gas bubble–metallic melt turbulent flows induced by a pitched-blade impeller with an inclined shaft. Foaming process of aluminum foams, in which air is injected into molten aluminum composites and the melt is mechanical stirred by the impeller, has been investigated. A two-fluid model, incorporated with the Multiple Reference Frames (MRF) method is used to predict the three-dimensional gas–liquid flow in the foaming tank, in which a stirring shaft is positioned inclined into the melt. Locally average bubble size is also predicted by additively solving a transport equation for the bubble number density function, which accounts for effects of bubble breakup and coalescence phenomena. The computed bubble sizes are compared with experimental data from our water model measurement and reasonable agreements are obtained. Further, simulated results show that the volume averaged total and local gas fractions are generally increased with rising impeller speed and gas flow rate. The local averaged bubble size increases with increasing gas flow rate and orifice diameter and decreasing liquid viscosity, and decreases also with rising rotation speed of the impeller.  相似文献

This paper aims to demonstrate the possibility to achieve droplet temperature measurements per droplet size class by combining two-color laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) and phase Doppler analyzer (PDA). For that purpose, PDA and LIF signal acquisitions are synchronized on the same time base. LIF signal is processed on each of the defined size classes in order to derive the droplet temperature. Since PDA is roughly sensitive to D 2 and LIF roughly to D 3, the detection range of the combination of the two techniques in term of droplet size is carefully analyzed. Finally, the technique is demonstrated on a spray of n-decane injected in a turbulent over-heated air flow. The influence of the droplet size and Stokes number on the heating process of the droplets is clearly highlighted.  相似文献

Influence of the streamwise pitch on local heat transfer distribution due to a rectangular in-line array of circular air jets of length-to-diameter ratio (l/d) of 1.0 is studied experimentally. The flow, after the impingement, is constrained to exit in one direction. Mean jet Reynolds number is varied from 3000 to 10000 and jet-to-plate spacing from d to 3d. Streamwise jet-to-jet distances of 3d, 4d and 5d and a constant spanwise pitch of 4d are considered. A flat target surface is made of thin stainless steel metal foil. The local temperature distribution on a target plate is measured using thermal infrared camera. The jet exit pressures are measured to estimate the cross-flow velocities and individual jet velocities. The streamwise distribution of the jet-flow and the cross-flow is least influenced by the streamwise pitch variation for the range of parameters investigated. Heat transfer characteristics are explained partially on the basis of flow distribution. The cooling performance, based on strip averaged Nusselt number per unit mass flow rate of coolant per unit area of cooled surface, deteriorates for lower streamwise pitch and higher jet-to-plate distance.  相似文献

We experimentally determine the droplet production rate at a water surface where either single or multiple bubbles (bubbly flow) with similar mean diameters disintegrate and produce film and jet droplets. A detailed assessment of film drop production from bubbly flow is important, since most presently used correlations are based on single-bubble measurements. Moreover, jet drops––even though they contain a much larger fluid volume––are de-entrained into the water surface in most technical and geophysical applications. Detailed phase Doppler anemometry (PDA) measurements are performed in the vicinity of the water surface with long sampling times. For a considered mean diameter of approximately 3 mm, the size distribution of the non spherical bubbles is determined from photographic images. From single-bubble measurements we find, consistent with literature data, a narrow size distribution of the jet drops with a mean diameter of 477 μm. For bubbly flow, the maximum is shifted to somewhat smaller jet drop diameters (425 μm) and the production of film droplets increases significantly. We relate this increase to the coalescence of bubbles prior to their disintegration at the surface. Our results therefore show that for a fixed bubble size and gas flow rate the number of film drops entrained from a bubbly flow is underestimated, if the estimate is based on single-bubble data.  相似文献

In the present paper, LDA was used to measure the velocity field of turbulent round air jet flows. Two cases were investigated; a jet issuing vertically upward and freely in the laboratory surrounding environment, and a jet issuing vertically upward but out of wall section setting flush horizontally at the nozzle exit. Data were collected for three exit Reynolds numbers of 1.32 × 104, 2.64 × 104 and 3.96 × 104, which correspond to exit velocities of 10 m/s, 20 m/s and 30 m/s respectively. For each Reynolds number, profile measurements of the mean velocity, turbulence intensity, skewness and flatness factors were made at 8 downstream stations up to 30 nozzle-exit diameter. The relative influence of using a wall at the jet exit plane on the jet behavior and characteristics is the objective of the present study. The experimental results indicate that the wall, placed at the exit plane, limits the interaction of the jet flow with the surroundings, and consequently results in a reduction in the velocity spread rate, kinematic momentum flux, and kinematic mass flux. Further, the flatness and skewness factors distributions across the jet flow registered relatively higher values in the outer region of the jet when the wall was used. This indicates a more intermittent behavior of the jet flow in that region due to the existence of the wall.  相似文献
