A cyclic order in the vertex set of a digraph is said to be coherent if any arc is contained in a directed cycle whose winding number is one. This notion plays a key role in the proof by Bessy and Thomassé (2004) of a conjecture of Gallai (1964) on covering the vertex set by directed cycles. This paper presents an efficient algorithm for finding a coherent cyclic order in a strongly connected digraph, based on a theorem of Knuth (1974). With the aid of ear decomposition, the algorithm runs in O(nm) time, where n is the number of vertices and m is the number of arcs. This is as fast as testing if a given cyclic order is coherent.  相似文献

A class of graphs is vertex Ramsey if for allH there existsG such that for all partitions of the vertices ofG into two parts, one of the parts contains an induced copy ofH. Forb (T,K) is the class of graphs that induce neitherT norK. LetT(k, r) be the tree with radiusr such that each nonleaf is adjacent tok vertices farther from the root than itself. Gyárfás conjectured that for all treesT and cliquesK, there exists an integerb such that for allG in Forb(T,K), the chromatic number ofG is at mostb. Gyárfás' conjecture implies a weaker conjecture of Sauer that for all treesT and cliquesK, Forb(T,K) is not vertex Ramsey. We use techniques developed for attacking Gyárfás' conjecture to prove that for allq, r and sufficiently largek, Forb(T(k,r),K q ) is not vertex Ramsey.Research partially supported by Office of Naval Research grant N00014-90-J-1206.  相似文献

Acycle double cover of a graph,G, is a collection of cycles,C, such that every edge ofG lies in precisely two cycles ofC. TheSmall Cycle Double Cover Conjecture, proposed by J. A. Bondy, asserts that every simple bridgeless graph onn vertices has a cycle double cover with at mostn–1 cycles, and is a strengthening of the well-knownCycle Double Cover Conjecture. In this paper, we prove Bondy's conjecture for 4-connected planar graphs.  相似文献

Enomoto 7 conjectured that if the minimum degree of a graph G of order n ≥ 4k ? 1 is at least the integer , then for any k vertices, G contains k vertex‐disjoint cycles each of which contains one of the k specified vertices. We confirm the conjecture for n ≥ ck2 where c is a constant. Furthermore, we show that under the same condition the cycles can be chosen so that each has length at most six. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Graph Theory 42: 276–296, 2003  相似文献

F on s edges and k disjoint cycles. The main result is the following theorem. Let F be a forest on s edges without isolated vertices and let G be a graph of order at least with minimum degree at least , where k, s are nonnegative integers. Then G contains the disjoint union of the forest F and k disjoint cycles. This theorem provides a common generalization of previous results of Corrádi & Hajnal [4] and Brandt [3] who considered the cases (cycles only) and (forests only), respectively. A non-complete graph G is called an (n,k)-graph if it is n-connected but GX is not (n−|X|+1)-connected for any X V (G) with |X|≤k. Mader conjectured that for k≥3 the graph K2k+2−(1−factor) is the unique (2k,k)-graph(up to isomorphism). Here we prove this conjecture.  相似文献

A topological approach to evasiveness   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
The complexity of a digraph property is the number of entries of the vertex adjacency matrix of a digraph which must be examined in worst case to determine whether the graph has the property. Rivest and Vuillemin proved the result (conjectured by Aanderaa and Rosenberg) that every graph property that is monotone (preserved by addition of edges) and nontrivial (holds for some but not all graphs) has complexity Ω(v 2) wherev is the number of vertices. Karp conjectured that every such property is evasive, i.e., requires that every entry of the incidence matrix be examined. In this paper the truth of Karp’s conjecture is shown to follow from another conjecture concerning group actions on topological spaces. A special case of the conjecture is proved which is applied to prove Karp’s conjecture for the case of properties of graphs on a prime power number of vertices. Dedicated to the memory of Paul Erdős A graph G is k-linked if G has at least 2k vertices, and, for any vertices , , ..., , , , ..., , G contains k pairwise disjoint paths such that joins for i = 1, 2, ..., k. We say that G is k-parity-linked if G is k-linked and, in addition, the paths can be chosen such that the parities of their lengths are prescribed. We prove the existence of a function g(k) such that every g(k)-connected graph is k-parity-linked if the deletion of any set of less than 4k-3 vertices leaves a nonbipartite graph. As a consequence, we obtain a result of Erdős–Pósa type for odd cycles in graphs of large connectivity. Also, every -connected graph contains a totally odd -subdivision, that is, a subdivision of in which each edge of corresponds to an odd path, if and only if the deletion of any vertex leaves a nonbipartite graph. Abstract

For n a positive integer and v a vertex of a graph G, the nth order degree of v in G, denoted by degnv, is the number of vertices at distance n from v. The graph G is said to be nth order regular of degree k if, for every vertex v of G, degnv = k. The following conjecture due to Alavi, Lick, and Zou is proved: For n ≥ 2, if G is a connected nth order regular graph of degree 1, then G is either a path of length 2n—1 or G has diameter n. Properties of nth order regular graphs of degree k, k ≥ 1, are investigated.  相似文献

Nash‐Williams conjectured that a 4‐connected infinite planar graph contains a spanning 2‐way infinite path if, and only if, the deletion of any finite set of vertices results in at most two infinite components. In this article, we prove this conjecture for graphs with no dividing cycles and for graphs with infinitely many vertex disjoint dividing cycles. A cycle in an infinite plane graph is called dividing if both regions of the plane bounded by this cycle contain infinitely many vertices of the graph. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.   The so-called Kelly conjecture states that every regular tournament on 2k+1 vertices has a decomposition into k-arc-disjoint hamiltonian cycles. In this paper we formulate a generalization of that conjecture, namely we conjecture that every k-arc-strong tournament contains k arc-disjoint spanning strong subdigraphs. We prove several results which support the conjecture:If D = (V, A) is a 2-arc-strong semicomplete digraph then it contains 2 arc-disjoint spanning strong subdigraphs except for one digraph on 4 vertices.Every tournament which has a non-trivial cut (both sides containing at least 2 vertices) with precisely k arcs in one direction contains k arc-disjoint spanning strong subdigraphs. In fact this result holds even for semicomplete digraphs with one exception on 4 vertices.Every k-arc-strong tournament with minimum in- and out-degree at least 37k contains k arc-disjoint spanning subdigraphs H 1, H 2, . . . , H k such that each H i is strongly connected. The last result implies that if T is a 74k-arc-strong tournament with speci.ed not necessarily distinct vertices u 1, u 2, . . . , u k , v 1, v 2, . . . , v k then T contains 2k arc-disjoint branchings where is an in-branching rooted at the vertex u i and is an out-branching rooted at the vertex v i , i=1,2, . . . , k. This solves a conjecture of Bang-Jensen and Gutin [3].We also discuss related problems and conjectures.

Diperfect graphs
Gallai and Milgram have shown that the vertices of a directed graph, with stability number α(G), can be covered by exactly α(G) disjoint paths. However, the various proofs of this result do not imply the existence of a maximum stable setS and of a partition of the vertex-set into paths μ1, μ2, ..., μk such tht |μiS|=1 for alli. Later, Gallai proved that in a directed graph, the maximum number of vertices in a path is at least equal to the chromatic number; here again, we do not know if there exists an optimal coloring (S 1,S 2, ...,S k) and a path μ such that |μ ∩S i|=1 for alli. In this paper we show that many directed graphs, like the perfect graphs, have stronger properties: for every maximal stable setS there exists a partition of the vertex set into paths which meet the stable set in only one point. Also: for every optimal coloring there exists a path which meets each color class in only one point. This suggests several conjecties similar to the perfect graph conjecture. Our topic is an extension of the following classical result of Hall to hypergraphs: A bipartite graph G contains a perfect matching if and only if for each independent set X of vertices, at least |X| vertices of G are adjacent to some vertex of X. Berge generalized the concept of bipartite graphs to hypergraphs by defining a hypergraph G to be balanced if each odd cycle in G has an edge containing at least three vertices of the cycle. Based on this concept, Conforti, Cornuéjols, Kapoor, and Vušković extended Hall's result by proving that a balanced hypergraph G contains a perfect matching if and only if for any disjoint sets A and B of vertices with |A| > |B|, there is an edge in G containing more vertices in A than in B (for graphs, the latter condition is equivalent to the latter one in Hall's result). Their proof is non-combinatorial and highly based on the theory of linear programming. In the present paper, we give an elementary combinatorial proof. Received April 29, 1997  相似文献

Let G be a graph of order n ≥ 5k + 2, where k is a positive integer. Suppose that the minimum degree of G is at least ?(n + k)/2?. We show that G contains k pentagons and a path such that they are vertex‐disjoint and cover all the vertices of G. Moreover, if n ≥ 5k + 7, then G contains k + 1 vertex‐disjoint cycles covering all the vertices of G such that k of them are pentagons. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Highly linked graphs   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
A graph with at least 2k vertices is said to bek-linked if, for any choices 1,...,s k ,t 1,...,t k of 2k distinct vertices there are vertex disjoint pathsP 1,...,P k withP i joinings i tot i , 1ik. The well-known theorem of Erd?s–Pósa says that either a graph G has k disjoint cycles or there is a vertex set X   of order at most f(k)f(k) for some function f   such that G?XG?X is a forest. Starting with this result, there are many results concerning packing and covering cycles in graph theory and combinatorial optimization.  相似文献
