Observation of the hc(1P1) state of charmonium

The h(c)((1)P(1)) state of charmonium has been observed in the reaction psi(2S) --> pi(0)h(c) --> (gammagamma)(gammaeta(c)) using 3.08 x10(6) psi(2S) decays recorded in the CLEO detector. Data have been analyzed both for the inclusive reaction, where the decay products of the eta(c) are not identified, and for exclusive reactions, in which eta(c) decays are reconstructed in seven hadronic decay channels. We find M(h(c)) = 3524.4 +/- 0.6 +/- 0.4 MeV which corresponds to a hyperfine splitting DeltaM(hf)(1P) triple-bond pi(0)h(c)) x B(h(c) --> gammaeta(c)) = (4.0 +/- 0.8 +/- 0.7) x 10(-4).     

Precision measurement of the three 2(3)P(J) helium fine structure intervals

The three 2(3)P fine structure intervals of 4H are measured at an improved accuracy that is sufficient to test two-electron QED theory and to determine the fine structure constant alpha to 14 parts in 10(9). The more accurate determination of alpha, to a precision higher than attained with the quantum Hall and Josephson effects, awaits the reconciliation of two inconsistent theoretical calculations now being compared term by term. A low pressure helium discharge presents experimental uncertainties quite different than for earlier measurements and allows direct measurements of light pressure shifts.     

Precision measurement of the mass of10B

The Q-value for the reaction¹⁰B(³He,p)¹²c* (4.439 MeV) was measured as 15 305.46±0.3 keV. Therefrom the mass excess of the ground state of¹⁰B could be derived as 12 051.2±0.45 keV which is by 0.5 keV lower than the value of the 1977 mass evaluation.     

A measurement of the 3P1 metastable state in Ca

A dye-laser excitation technique has been used to measure the lifetime of the ³P₁ metastable state in Ca. The lifetime is 0.39±0.04 msec.     

Precision microwave measurement of the 2 3P1-2 3P2 interval in atomic helium

The 2 3P1-to- 2 3P2 interval in atomic helium is measured using a thermal beam of metastable helium atoms excited to the 2 3P state using a 1.08-&mgr;m diode laser. The 2 3P1-to- 2 3P2 transition is driven by 2.29-GHz microwaves in a coaxial transmission line. Our result of 2 291 174.0+/-1.4 kHz is the most precise measurement of helium 2 3P fine structure. This measurement plays a key role in obtaining a new value for the fine-structure constant.     

Cascading through the 1P1 (1s)(2p) state of fluorine

The ¹P₁ (1s)(2p) state of He-like fluorine produced in a foil-excited fluorine beam is shown to decay with a $\text{t}{}^{\mathrm{<mtext>-3</mtext><mtext>2</mtext>}}$ time function. This behavior is identical to that recently reported for oxygen beams and thus demonstrates that there is no strong Z dependence for this time behavior.     

Radiative E1 decay of the1P1 level of charmonium in the sum rules of quantum chromodynamics

An analysis of the radiative decay¹P₁ ¹S₀ + of charmonium is performed by using the sum rules of quantum chromodynamics (QCD).
