Quasi-thermal-equilibrium states of electron-hole (e-h) systems in photoexcited insulators are studied from a theoretical viewpoint, stressing the exciton Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC), the e-h BCS-type pair-condensed state, and the exciton Mott transition between an insulating exciton/biexciton gas phase and a metallic e-h plasma phase. We determine the quasi-equilibrium phase diagram of the e-h system at zero and finite temperatures with applying the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) to the e-h Hubbard model with both repulsive and attractive on-site interactions. Effects of inter-site interactions on the exciton Mott transition are also clarified with applying the extended DMFT to the extended e-h Hubbard model.  相似文献

We analyze the effects of the on-site Coulomb repulsion U on a band insulator using dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). We find the surprising result that the gap is suppressed to zero at a critical Uc1 and remains zero within a metallic phase. At a larger Uc2 there is a second transition from the metal to a Mott insulator, in which the gap increases with increasing U. These results are qualitatively different from Hartree-Fock theory which gives a monotonically decreasing but nonzero insulating gap for all finite U.  相似文献

The influence of disorder and pseudogap fluctuations on the Mott insulator-metal transition in strongly correlated systems has been studied in the framework of the generalized dynamic mean field theory (DMFT + Σ approach). Using the results of investigations of the density of states (DOS) and optical conductivity, a phase diagram (disorder-Hubbard interaction-temperature) is constructed for the paramagnetic Anderson-Hubbard model, which allows both the effects of strong electron correlations and the influence of strong disorder to be considered. Strong correlations are described using the DMFT, while a strong disorder is described using a generalized self-consistent theory of localization. The DOS and optical conductivity of the paramagnetic Hubbard model have been studied in a pseudogap state caused by antiferromagnetic spin (or charge) short-range order fluctuations with a finite correlation length, which have been modeled by a static Gaussian random field. The effect of a pseudogap on the Mott insulator-metal transition has been studied. It is established that, in both cases, the static Gaussian random field (related to the disorder or pseudogap fluctuations) leads to suppression of the Mott transition, broadening of the coexistence region of the insulator and metal phases, and an increase in the critical temperature at which the coexistence region disappears.  相似文献

The electronic properties of paramagnetic V2O3 are investigated by the computational scheme LDA+DMFT(QMC). This approach merges the local density approximation (LDA) with dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) and uses quantum Monte Carlo simulations (QMC) to solve the effective Anderson impurity model of DMFT. Starting with the crystal structure of metallic V2O3 and insulating (V0.962Cr0.038)2O3 we find a Mott-Hubbard transition at a Coulomb interaction U approximately 5 eV. The calculated spectrum is in very good agreement with experiment. Furthermore, the orbital occupation and the spin state S = 1 determined by us agree with recent polarization dependent x-ray-absorption experiments.  相似文献

We investigate the ground state phase diagram of the half-filled repulsive Hubbard model in two dimensions in the presence of a staggered potential Delta, the so-called ionic Hubbard model, using cluster dynamical mean-field theory. We find that for large Coulomb repulsion, U > Delta, the system is a Mott insulator (MI). For weak to intermediate values of Delta, on decreasing U, the Mott gap closes at a critical value Uc1(Delta) beyond which a correlated insulating phase with possible bond order is found. Further, this phase undergoes a first-order transition to a band insulator (BI) at Uc2(Delta) with a finite charge gap at the transition. For large Delta, there is a direct first-order transition from a MI to a BI with a single metallic point at the phase boundary.  相似文献

Several new aspects of the subtle interplay between electronic correlations and disorder are reviewed. First, the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) together with the geometrically averaged (“typical”) local density of states is employed to compute the ground state phase diagram of the Anderson-Hubbard model at half-filling. This non-perturbative approach is sensitive to Anderson localization on the one-particle level and hence can detect correlated metallic, Mott insulating and Anderson insulating phases and can also describe the competition between Anderson localization and antiferromagnetism. Second, we investigate the effect of binary alloy disorder on ferromagnetism in materials with f-electrons described by the periodic Anderson model. A drastic enhancement of the Curie temperature Tc caused by an increase of the local f-moments in the presence of disordered conduction electrons is discovered and explained.  相似文献

We study the Mott metal-insulator transition in the periodic Anderson model with dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). Near the quantum transition, we find a non-Fermi-liquid metallic state down to a vanishing temperature scale. We identify the origin of the non-Fermi-liquid behavior as being due to magnetic scattering of the doped carriers by the localized moments. The non-Fermi-liquid state can be tuned by either doping or external magnetic field. Our results show that the coupling to spatial magnetic fluctuations (absent in DMFT) is not a prerequisite to realizing a non-Fermi-liquid scenario for heavy fermion systems.  相似文献

The strong coupling diagram technique is used for investigating states near the metal-insulator transition in the half-filled two-dimensional repulsive Hubbard model. The nonlocal third-order term is included in the irreducible part along with local terms of lower orders. Derived equations for the electron Green’s function are solved by iteration for moderate Hubbard repulsions and temperatures. Starting iteration from Green’s functions of the Hubbard-I approximation with various distances of poles from the real frequency axis continua of different metallic and insulating solutions are obtained. The insulating solutions vary in the width of the Mott gap, while the metallic solutions differ in the shape of the spectral function in the vicinity of the Fermi level. Besides, different scenarios of the metal-insulator transition – with a sudden onset of a band of mobile states near the Fermi level and with gradual closure of the Mott gap – are observed with a change in temperature. In spite of these dissimilarities, all solutions have a common curve separating metallic and insulating states in the phase diagram. Near this curve metallic and insulating solutions coexist. For moderate Hubbard repulsions metallic solutions are not Fermi liquids.  相似文献

The DOS, the dynamic (optical) conductivity, and the phase diagram of a strongly correlated and strongly disordered paramagnetic Anderson-Hubbard model are analyzed within the generalized dynamical mean field theory (DMFT + Σ approximation). Strong correlations are taken into account by the DMFT, and disorder is taken into account via an appropriate generalization of the self-consistent theory of localization. The DMFT effective single-impurity problem is solved by a numerical renormalization group (NRG); we consider the three-dimensional system with a semielliptic DOS. The correlated metal, Mott insulator, and correlated Anderson insulator phases are identified via the evolution of the DOS and dynamic conductivity, demonstrating both the Mott-Hubbard and Anderson metal-insulator transition and allowing the construction of the complete zero-temperature phase diagram of the Anderson-Hubbard model. Rather unusual is the possibility of a disorder-induced Mott insulator-to-metal transition. The text was submitted by the authors in English.  相似文献

The density of states, the dynamic (optical) conductivity, and the phase diagram of the paramagnetic two-dimensional Anderson-Hubbard model with strong correlations and disorder are analyzed within the generalized dynamical mean field theory (DMFT + Σ approximation). Strong correlations are accounted by the DMFT, while disorder is taken into account via the appropriate generalization of the self-consistent theory of localization. We consider the two-dimensional system with the rectangular “bare” density of states (DOS). The DMFT effective single-impurity problem is solved by numerical renormalization group (NRG). The “correlated metal,” Mott insulator, and correlated Anderson insulator phases are identified from the evolution of the density of states, optical conductivity, and localization length, demonstrating both Mott-Hubbard and Anderson metal-insulator transitions in two-dimensional systems of finite size, allowing us to construct the complete zero-temperature phase diagram of the paramagnetic Anderson-Hubbard model. The localization length in our approximation is practically independent of the strength of Hubbard correlations. But the divergence of the localization length in a finite-size two-dimensional system at small disorder signifies the existence of an effective Anderson transition.  相似文献

An optical study of NdNiO(3) ultrathin films with insulating and metallic ground states reveals new aspects of the insulator-to-metal transition that point to Mott physics as the driving force. In contrast with the behavior of charge-ordered systems, we find that the emergence of the Drude resonance across the transition is linked to a spectral weight transfer over an energy range of the order of the Coulomb repulsion U, as the energy gap is filled with states instead of closing continuously.  相似文献

We present an ab initio quantum theory of the metal-insulator transition in Ti2O3. The recently developed cluster LDA+DMFT scheme is applied to describe the many-body features of this compound. The conventional single site DMFT cannot reproduce a low temperature insulating phase for any reasonable values of the Coulomb interaction. We show that the nonlocal Coulomb interactions and the strong chemical bonding within the Ti-Ti pair is the origin of the small gap insulating ground state of Ti2O3.  相似文献

Superlattices of (LaMnO3){2n}/(SrMnO3){n} (1or=3. Measurements of transport, magnetization, and polarized neutron reflectivity reveal that the ferromagnetism is relatively uniform in the metallic state, and is strongly modulated in the insulating state, being high in LaMnO3 and suppressed in SrMnO3. The modulation is consistent with a Mott transition driven by the proximity between the (LaMnO3)/(SrMnO3) interfaces. The insulating state for n>or=3 obeys variable range hopping at low temperatures. We suggest that this is due to states at the Fermi level that emerge at the (LaMnO3)/(SrMnO3) interfaces and are localized by disorder.  相似文献

We introduce a new linear response method to study the lattice dynamics of materials with strong correlations. It is based on a combination of dynamical mean field theory of strongly correlated electrons and the local density functional theory of electronic structure. We apply the method to study the phonon dispersions of Mott insulators NiO and MnO in their paramagnetic insulating state not accessible by local density functionals. Our results are in good agreement with experiment.  相似文献

An intrinsic issue of the LDA + DMFT approach is the so called double counting of interaction terms. How to choose the double-counting potential in a manner that is both physically sound and consistent is unknown. We have conducted an extensive study of the charge-transfer system NiO in the LDA + DMFT framework using quantum Monte Carlo and exact diagonalization as impurity solvers. By explicitly treating the double-counting correction as an adjustable parameter we systematically investigated the effects of different choices for the double counting on the spectral function. Different methods for fixing the double counting can drive the result from Mott insulating to almost metallic. We propose a reasonable scheme for the determination of double-counting corrections for insulating systems.  相似文献

Ab initio analyses of A(2)IrO(4) (A=Sr,Ba) are presented. Effective Hubbard-type models for Ir 5d t(2g) manifolds downfolded from the global band structure are solved based on the dynamical mean-field theory. The results for A=Sr and Ba correctly reproduce paramagnetic metals undergoing continuous transitions to insulators below the Néel temperature T(N). These compounds are classified not into Mott insulators but into Slater insulators. However, the insulating gap opens by a synergy of the Néel order and significant band renormalization, which is also manifested by a 2D bad metallic behavior in the paramagnetic phase near the quantum criticality.  相似文献

We found direct experimental evidence for an orbital switching in the V 3d states across the metal-insulator transition in VO2. We have used soft-x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the V L2,3 edges as a sensitive local probe and have determined quantitatively the orbital polarizations. These results strongly suggest that, in going from the metallic to the insulating state, the orbital occupation changes in a manner that charge fluctuations and effective bandwidths are reduced, that the system becomes more one dimensional and more susceptible to a Peierls-like transition, and that the required massive orbital switching can only be made if the system is close to a Mott insulating regime.  相似文献

We study the Mott transition in the half-filled Hubbard model with spatially alternating interactions by means of the coherent potential approximation. The phase boundary between metallic and insulating phases at zero temperature is derived and the nature of the Mott states is also considered. Our results are in good agreement with the ones recently obtained by the two-site dynamical mean-field theory.  相似文献

Competition between crystal field splitting and Hund’s rule coupling in magnetic metal-insulator transitions of half-filled two-orbital Hubbard model is investigated by multi-orbital slave-boson mean field theory. We show that with the increase of Coulomb interaction, the system firstly transits from a paramagnetic (PM) metal to a Néel antiferromagnetic (AFM) Mott insulator, or to a nonmagnetic orbital insulator, depending on the competition of crystal field splitting and the Hund’s rule coupling. The AFM Mott insulating, PM metallic and orbital insulating phases are not, partially and fully orbital polarized, respectively. For a small J H and a finite crystal field, the orbital insulator is robust. These results demonstrate that large crystal field splitting favors the formation of the orbital insulating phase, while large Hund’s rule coupling tends to destroy it, driving the low-spin to high-spin transition.  相似文献
