Catenoidal Layers for the Allen-Cahn Equation in Bounded Domains

This paper presents a new family of solutions to the singularly perturbed Allen-Cahn equation α~2Δu + u(1- u~2) = 0 in a smooth bounded domain Ω R~3, with Neumann boundary condition and α 0 a small parameter. These solutions have the property that as α→ 0, their level sets collapse onto a bounded portion of a complete embedded minimal surface with finite total curvature intersecting ?Ω orthogonally and that is non-degenerate respect to ?Ω. The authors provide explicit examples of surfaces to which the result applies.

Partial Differential Equation for Evolution of Star-Shaped Reachability Domains of Differential Inclusions

The problem of reachability for differential inclusions is an active topic in the recent control theory. Its solution provides an insight into the dynamics of an investigated system and also enables one to design synthesizing control strategies under a given optimality criterion. The primary results on reachability were mostly applicable to convex sets, whose dynamics is described through that of their support functions. Those results were further extended to the viability problem and some types of nonlinear systems. However, non-convex sets can arise even in simple bilinear systems. Hence, the issue of nonconvexity in reachability problems requires a more detailed investigation. The present article follows an alternative approach for this cause. It deals with star-shaped reachability sets, describing the evolution of these sets in terms of radial (Minkowski gauge) functions. The derived partial differential equation is then modified to cope with additional state constraints due to on-line measurement observations. Finally, the last section is on designing optimal closed-loop control strategies using radial functions.

Solution of the Basic Boundary Value Problems of Stationary Thermoelastic Oscillations for Domains Bounded by Spherical Surfaces

The boundary value problems of stationary thermoelastic oscillations are investigated for the entire space with a spherical cavity, when the limit values of a displacement vector and temperature or of a stress vector and heat flow are given on the boundary. Also, consideration is given to the boundary-contact problems when a nonhomogeneous medium fills up the entire space and consists of several homogeneous parts with spherical interface surfaces. Given on an interface surface are differences of the limit values of displacement and stress vectors, also of temperature and heat flow, while given on a free boundary are the limit values of a displacement vector and temperature or of a stress vector and heat flow. Solutions of the considered problems are represented as absolutely and uniformly convergent series.     

Extrapolation for the Approximations to the Solution of a Boundary Integral Equation on Polygonal Domains

In this paper, we consider a boundary integral equation of second kind rising from potential theory. The equation may be solved numerically by Galerkin's method using piecewise constant functions. Because of the singularities produced by the corners, we have to grade the mesh near the corner. In general, Chandler obtained the order 2 superconvergence of the iterated Galerkin solution in the uniform norm. It is proved in this paper that the Richardson extrapolation increases the accuracy from order 2 to order 4.

Attractors for Damped Quintic Wave Equations in Bounded Domains

The dissipative wave equation with a critical quintic non-linearity in smooth bounded three-dimensional domain is considered. Based on the recent extension of the Strichartz estimates to the case of bounded domains, the existence of a compact global attractor for the solution semigroup of this equation is established. Moreover, the smoothness of the obtained attractor is also shown.

On a Schwarz Lemma for Bounded Symmetric Domains

We develop a new systematic approach to the Boussinesq (Bsq) hierarchy based on elementary algebraic methods. In particular, we recursively construct Lax pairs for the Bsq hierarchy by introducing a fundamental polynomial formalism and establish the basic algebro -geometric setting including associated Burchnall - Chaundy curves, Baker - Akhiezer functions, trace formulas, and Dubrovin - type equations for Dirichlet and Neumann divisors.
