An ion-conductive mesogenic monomer with an imidazolium ionic moiety has been designed to obtain self-assembled materials forming ionic layers. Self-standing polymer films are prepared by in situ photopolymerization of the monomer that forms homeotropic monodomain on a normal glass substrate in the smectic A phase. Macroscopically oriented, layered nanostructures are formed in the film. The ionic conductivity parallel to the smectic layer has been measured for the oriented film. A membrane osmometer designed for use at pressures greater than 0.1 MPa and less than 6 MPa was employed to determine the pressure coefficient of the equilibrium osmotic pressure (?π/?P) of a dilute polystyrene/toluene solution. The pressure coefficient of the second virial coefficient (?A2/?P), calculated from ?π/?P, was 6 (±4) × 10?5 cm3 mol g?2 MPa?1, which was in reasonable agreement with the value obtained from pressure‐dependent light scattering. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Triblock copolymers and pentablock terpolymers of n‐hexyl isocyanate (H), styrene (S), and isoprene (I) of the type HSH (six samples, Mn:49–163 K, weight % of H:5–59), HIH (two samples, Mn:75 and 83.4 K, weight % of H:16 and 40), HSISH (one sample, Mn:79.4 K, weight % of H:13), and HISIH (one sample, Mn:128 K, weight % of H:25) were synthesized by high‐vacuum techniques in tetrahydrofuran at ?98 °C with the sodium naphthalene/sodium tetraphenylborate initiating system. All materials were characterized by size exclusion chromatography, membrane osmometry, and 1H NMR. The combined molecular characterization results revealed a high degree of molecular and compositional homogeneity. The thermal properties of the synthesized materials were examined by thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The composition of polyester polyols derived from terephthalic acid (TPA) and diethylene glycol (DEG) was examined. The synthesis of individual oligomers 1 , n is described. The compounds were characterized with 1H and 13C NMR, mass spectrometry, and elemental analyses. The resonance signals arising from aromatic protons in 1 , n = 1–3 were identified in 1H NMR spectra of TPA‐DEG condensates. From 1H NMR studies and chromatographic separation, it was concluded that the condensation of TPA and DEG in a 1:2 molar ratio results in a mixture of linear oligomers 1 with the average ñ varying from 1.1 to 2.2, and containing about 2% of cyclic oligomer 2 . © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of ethylene–vinyl chloride‐like copolymers were prepared by ring‐opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). The route to these materials included the bulk polymerization of 5‐chlorocyclooctene and 5,6‐dichlorocyclooctene with the first‐generation Grubbs' catalyst, followed by diimide hydrogenation of the resulting unsaturated polymers. In addition, the amount of chlorine in these materials was varied by the copolymerization of 5‐chlorocyclooctene with cyclooctene. These materials were fully characterized by NMR (1H and 13C), gel permeation chromatography, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Finally, hydroboration was carried out on the ROMP product of 5‐chlorocyclooctene to yield a polymer, which was effectively a vinyl alcohol–vinyl chloride–ethylene terpolymer. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(styrene‐graft‐ethyl methacrylate) graft copolymer was prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) with poly(styrene‐cop‐chloromethyl styrene)s in various compositions as macroinitiator in the presence of CuCl/1,2‐dipiperidinoethane at 130 °C in N,N‐dimethylformamide. Both macroinitiators and graft copolymers were characterized by elemental analysis, IR, 1H and 13C NMR, and differential scanning calorimetry. 1,2‐Dipiperidinoethane was an effective ligand of CuCl for ATRP in the graft copolymerization. The controlled growth of the side chain provided the graft copolymers with polydispersities of 1.60–2.05 in the case of poly(styrene‐cop‐chloromethyl styrene) (62:38) macroinitiator. Thermal stabilities of poly(styrene‐graft‐ethyl methacrylate) graft copolymers were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis as compared with those of the macroinitiators. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hyaluronic acid and chondroitin were successfully synthesized as representative molecules of glucosaminoglycans and galactosaminoglycans found in a glycosaminoglycan family via enzymatic polymerization catalyzed by testicular hyaluronidases. A newly designed N-acetylhyalobiuronate oxazoline derivative with a β-D -glucuronyl-(1→3)-N-acetyl-D -glucosamine disaccharide structure served as a transition-state analogue substrate monomer for the enzyme, giving rise to artificial hyaluronic acid in 52% yields with a number-average molecular weight of 1.35 × 104 through ring-opening polyaddition in a perfect regioselective and stereoselective manner. A novel N-acetylchondrosine oxazoline derivative with a β-D -glucuronyl-(1→3)-N-acetyl-D -galactosamine disaccharide structure also acted as a transition-state analogue substrate monomer for the enzyme, yielding artificial chondroitin in 35% yields with a number-average molecular weight of 2.5 × 103. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Motivated by recent experiments (Spontak, R. J.; Smith, S. D. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 2001, 39, 947) on morphological and mechanical properties of multiblock copolymers (AB)n, we theoretically elucidate the links between microscopically determined properties, such as the bridging fraction of chains, and mechanical properties of these materials. We do this by applying self‐consistent mean‐field theory to determine morphological aspects such as period and interfacial width and calculate the bridging fractions. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, the optimal surfmer feeding profile for stabilizing a high-solid-content acrylic latex with a non-ionic alkenyl functional TMMaxemul 5011 was calculated. For this purpose, the model developed by de la Cal and Asua (J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 39 (2001) 585) was used. It was observed that, in spite of the low reactivity of the surfmer, it was possible to increase substantially the surfmer conversion using an optimal surfmer addition policy. The addition reaction of 2,2‐bis‐[4‐(2,3‐epoxypropoxy)‐phenyl]‐propane (DGEBA) and preformed complexes of metal ions and disecondary diamines led to a large quantity of cyclic epoxide–amine oligomers. As shown by gel permeation chromatographic analysis, cycles of n = 1, 2, and 3 were formed. Functional epoxide end groups of the prepared oligomers were completely missing in the IR and 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectra. In the fast atom bombardment and matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectra, the molecular ions of the n = 1, 2, 3 cycles of DGEBA and N,N′‐dibenzyl‐5‐oxanonanediamine‐1,9 were detected at m/z = 680, 1361, and 2042. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The interaction of two polyampholyte systems, poly(1‐vinylimidazole‐co‐acrylic acid) and interpolymer complex poly(acrylic acid)/poly(1‐vinylimidazole) with copper(II) ions in water, was examined with potentiometry (pH‐metry and Cu‐selective electrode) and electron spin‐resonance spectroscopy. Coordination of Cu2+ with copolymer proceeded by carboxylic groups, whereas the interpolymer system azole units were also involved in the inner sphere of the complex. Synergism between coordination with metal ions and intramolecular hydrogen or ionic bonds was shown. The interpolymer complex was an effective system for binding, extracting, and concentrating copper ions from water. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Copolymers of 2‐methylene‐1,3‐dioxepane (MDO) and methyl acrylate (MA) containing ester units both in the backbone and as pendant groups were synthesized by free‐radical copolymerization. The influence of reaction conditions such as the polymerization time, temperature, initiator concentration, and comonomer feed ratio on the yield, molecular weight, and copolymer composition was investigated. The structure of the copolymers was confirmed by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and IR spectroscopy. Differential scanning calorimetry indicated that the copolymers had a random structure. An NMR study showed that hydrogen transfer occurred during the copolymerization. The reactivity ratios of the comonomers were rMDO = 0.0235 and rMA = 26.535. The enzymatic degradation of the copolymers obtained was carried out in the presence of proteinase K or a crude enzyme extracted from earthworms. The experimental results showed that the higher ester molar percentage in the backbone caused a faster degradation rate. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel star‐shaped poly(p‐dioxanone) was synthesized by the ring‐opening polymerization of p‐dioxanone initiated by pentaerythritol with stannous octoate as a catalyst in bulk. The effect of the molar ratio of the monomer to the initiator on the polymerization was studied. The polymers were characterized with 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The thermal properties of the polymers were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. The kinetics of the initiation and propagation of the ring‐opening metathesis polymerization of exo,exo‐5,6‐bis(methoxycarbonyl)‐7‐oxabicyclo[2.2.1]hept‐2‐ene catalyzed by Grubbs' catalyst (Cl2(PCy3)2Ru?CHPh) were measured by ultraviolet–visible and 1H NMR spectroscopy, respectively. Activation parameters for these processes were also determined. Although the ratio of the rate constant of initiation to the rate constant of propagation was determined to be less than 1 for this system, this polymerization showed many of the characteristics of a living system, including low polydispersities. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) sample was chlorinated in solution in the presence of 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile and by the fluid‐bed method. The aim was to evaluate the scope of the stereoselectivity of the chlorination reaction. The quantitative microstructural analysis of the residual PVC with a degree of chlorination was followed by 13C NMR spectroscopy. From the evolution of the content of isotactic (mm), heterotactic (mr), and syndiotactic (rr) triads and of mmmm, mmmr, and rmmr isotactic pentads in the unchlorinated parts of the polymer, it was unambiguously inferred that the chlorination reaction proceeds by a stereoselective mechanism in that the mr heterotactic triads are the most reactive structures followed by the isotactic triad at mmmr and rmmr pentads. This conclusion was confirmed on the basis of the Fourier transform infrared results. The results provide valuable information regarding the effect of tacticity and related local conformations in the chemical reactions of PVC. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel diblock and dihydrophilic ionic–nonionic copolymers, having phosphonic and carboxylic functions at the same carbon atom in the repeating units of the ionic block, were prepared. The addition of 2-diethylphosphono-ethyl acrylate (PC) to hydroxyl groups of the polyglycidol block of the poly(ethylene glycol)-b-polyglycidol block copolymer was followed by the dealkylation of phosphonic acid esters and the hydrolysis of carboxylic acid esters. The polymer was characterized by 1H, 13C, and 31P NMR. A novel epoxy system was developed through the in situ curing of bisphenol A type epoxy and 4,4′‐diaminodiphenylmethane with the sol–gel reaction of a phosphorus‐containing trimethoxysilane (DOPO–GPTMS), which was prepared from the reaction of 9,10‐dihydro‐9‐oxa‐10‐phosphaphenanthrene‐10‐oxide (DOPO) with 3‐glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS). The preparation of DOPO–GPTMS was confirmed with Fourier transform infrared, 1H and 31P NMR, and elemental analysis. The resulting organic–inorganic hybrid epoxy resins exhibited a high glass‐transition temperature (167 °C), good thermal stability over 320 °C, and a high limited oxygen index of 28.5. The synergism of phosphorus and silicon on flame retardance was observed. Small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) was used to obtain solution parameters of a weak polyelectrolyte in water in the absence of any additives, such as neutralizing agents or salt. Poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) was used as a weak polyelectrolyte from which SAXS data were obtained in the dilute region of 1–10 mg cm?3. An intrinsic viscosity of 15.7 dL g?1 was obtained from a plot of reciprocal reduced viscosities versus the concentration. The application of the SAXS data, that is, the contour length (L = 1.97 × 104 Å), the persistence length (a* = 58.5 Å), and the molecular weight (M = 5.9 × 105 Da), to the Yamakawa–Fujii equation suggested that PAA in water at 25 °C could be described as a wormlike chain having a cylindrical body of d = 6 Å. An end‐to‐end distance (r = 1.6 × 103 Å) was calculated from r = 2a*L ? 2(a*)2. The nonisotropic expansion factor (α = 2.9) was calculated for PAA expanding from the random coil in dioxane at 30 °C (Θ temperature) to the wormlike chain in water at 25 °C. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We studied the curing processes of several series of dimeric liquid‐crystalline epoxyimine monomers with 2,4‐toluene diisocyanate (TDI) alone or with added catalytic proportions of 4‐(N,N‐dimethylamino)pyridine. We obtained isotropic materials or liquid‐crystalline thermosets with different degrees of order, which depended on the structures of the monomers. To fix ordered networks, we had to do the curing in two steps when TDI was used alone as the curing agent. However, when a tertiary amine was added in catalytic proportions, the ordered networks were fixed in just one step. In this way, we were able to fix both nematic and smectic mesophases. The significance of the polarization of the mesogen for obtaining liquid‐crystalline thermosets was demonstrated. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. As a novel class of proton exchange membrane materials for use in fuel cells, sulfonated poly(phthalazinone ether ketone)s (SPPEKs) were prepared by the modification of poly(phthalazinone ether ketone). Sulfonation reactions were conducted at room temperature with mixtures of 95–98% concentrated sulfuric acid and 27–33% fuming sulfuric acid with different acid ratios, and SPPEK was obtained with a degree of sulfonation (DS) in the desired range of 0.6–1.2. The presence of sulfonic acid groups in SPPEK was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared analysis, and the DS and structures were characterized by NMR. The introduction of sulfonic groups into the polymer chains increased the glass‐transition temperature above the decomposition temperature and also led to an overall decrease in the decomposition temperature. Membrane films were cast from SPPEK solutions in N,N‐dimethylacetamide. Water uptakes and swelling ratios of SPPEK membrane films increased with DS, and SPPEKs with DS > 1.23 were water‐soluble at 80 °C.
