The surface morphology of thin bilayer polymer films on top of glass substrates was investigated. The bilayer consists of a blend film of protonated and deuterated polystyrene and an underlying deuterated polystyrene film. Choosing the thickness of the top film larger than 8 times and smaller than 2 times the radius of gyration of the chains enables the determination of film thickness and confinement effects. With diffuse neutron scattering at grazing incidence in the region of total external reflection, a depth sensitivity and a contrast even at the internal polymer–polymer interface was achieved. The underlying film is conformal to the substrate, and depending on the thickness of the top film two different types of roughness correlations are observed. Thin confined films nestle to the underlying polymer films, while the stiffness of thicker bulky films provides an independent morphology. In both cases, annealing above the glass-transition temperature yields an interdiffusion at the internal polymer–polymer interface, and the polymer–air surface remains essentially unchanged with respect to roughness correlations. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Diffusion of penetrants through polymers often does not follow the standard Fickian model. Such anomalous behavior can cause difficulty when designing polymer networks for specific uses. One type of non-Fickian behavior that results is so-called case II diffusion, where Fickian-like fronts initially move like √t with a transition to a non-Fickian concentration profile and front speed for moderate time. A mathematical model is presented that replicates this behavior in thin polymer films, and an analysis is performed that yields relevant dimensionless groups for study. An unusual result is derived: In certain parameter ranges, the concentration profile can change concavity, reflecting Fickian behavior for short times and non-Fickian behavior for moderate times. Asymptotic and numerical results are then obtained to characterize the dependence of such relevant quantities as failure time, front speed, and mass transport on these dimensionless groups. This information can aid in the design of effective polymer protectant films. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The surface morphologies of confined, dewetted polymer films were investigated with atomic force microscopy (AFM) and grazing-incidence small-angle neutron scattering (GISANS). On examining homopolymer films of deuterated polystyrene (dPS) both techniques reveal the resulting droplet structure which is described by one most prominent in-plane length. Due to the contrast resulting from deuteration in the case of polymer blend films of dPS and poly(p-methyl styrene) GISANS is able to probe the in-plane composition of the dewetting structure. An additional phase separation process at different length scales gives rise to a sub- and superstructure which is not detectable by AFM. In addition, the influence of the wavelength used in the GISANS experiments on the structures observed is discussed. Received: 13 April 1999 Accepted in revised form: 29 June 1999  相似文献

The recent (from 2010 onward) contributions of quasielastic neutron scattering techniques (time of flight, backscattering, and neutron spin echo) to the characterization and understanding of dynamical processes in soft materials based on polymers are analyzed. The selectivity provided by the combination of neutron scattering and isotopic—in particular, proton/deuterium—labeling allows the isolated study of chosen molecular groups and/or components in a system. This opportunity, together with the capability of neutrons to provide space/time resolution at the relevant length scales in soft matter, allows unraveling the nature of the large variety of molecular motions taking place in materials of increasing complexity. As a result, recent relevant works can be found dealing with dynamical process which associated characteristic lengths and nature are as diverse as, for example, phenyl motions in a glassy linear homopolymer like polystyrene and the chain dynamics of a polymer adsorbed on dispersed clay platelets. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The addition of nanoparticles to a polymer matrix can in certain cases induce a reduction in viscosity, with respect to the pure matrix, in the resulting composites. This counterintuitive phenomenon cannot be explained using the most common rheological models. For this reason, it has been chosen as a good example in this paper to demonstrate the value and methods of dynamic X-ray and neutron scattering techniques for the investigation of polymer nanocomposites. An overview of the main results on this topic is presented together with an introduction to the basic concepts relating to X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy, neutron backscattering, and neutron spin echo measurements.  相似文献

The early stages of the penetrant behavior of a series of phthalate plasticizers into thin films of glassy, high-molecular-weight deuterated poly(methyl methacrylate) (dPMMA) have been studied with in situ real-time neutron reflectivity. After an initial induction phase, both dioctyl phthalate and diisononyl phthalate penetrate the dPMMA films, as indicated by an increase in the thickness. In both cases, a fast linear rate of swelling of the polymer is followed by another behavior that is much slower. The slowdown in the velocity of the plasticizers at or near the transition point is assumed to occur because of a balancing of the misfit-induced pressure and the osmotic pressure, which is responsible for the initial plasticizer ingress. In contrast, and unexpectedly, lower molecular weight dibutyl phthalate does not swell dPMMA, but after an initial induction period, the polymer film begins to dissolve. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Static and dynamic scattering properties of polymer blends and block copolymers are examined within the random phase approximation (RPA). A self-consistent theoretical scheme for a simultaneous analysis of elastic and quasielastic scattering data is presented. The case of a triblock copolymer made of an ordinary central block and two deuterated lateral blocks in a matrix of deuterated homopolymers is considered in detail. The theoretical predictions of the RPA are compared with the experimental data obtained by elastic neutron scattering experiments using mixtures of deuterated poly(dimethylsiloxane) homopolymers and copolymers made of three blocks of approximately equal sizes. The lateral blocks are deuterated poly(dimethylsiloxane) and the central one is an ordinary poly(dimethylsiloxane). A good agreement is found in the whole range of wavevectors covered by the experiments. An extension of the RPA to the analysis of the dynamical scattering data for the same systems is put forward. It is shown how the time relaxations of the bare response functions obtained from the single chain dynamics are used to extract the intermediate scattering function characterizing the system of interacting chains. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Thin films of lamellar and cylindrical block copolymers are popular systems for low-cost nanolithography. To be useful as nanoscale templates, the lamellae or cylinders must be oriented perpendicular to the substrate. Domain orientations are usually characterized by microscopy measurements of the film surface, but these techniques cannot detect tilted, bent, or tortuous domains in the film interior. We report a simple method to quantify out-of-plane disorder in thin films of block copolymers based on a variant of grazing-incidence small angle X-ray scattering (GI-SAXS). A typical GI-SAXS experiment illuminates the center of a substrate-supported film at a grazing angle of incidence (near the film/substrate critical angle), and the strong reflected signal is interpreted with the distorted-wave Born approximation. In a new approach, the beam footprint is moved to the far edge of the sample, allowing the acquisition of a transmission pattern. The grazing-incidence transmission data are interpreted with the simple Born approximation, and out-of-plane defects are quantified through analysis of crystal truncation rods and partial Debye-Scherrer rings. Significantly, this study demonstrates that grazing-incidence transmission small angle X-ray scattering can detect and quantify the buried defect structure in thin films of block copolymers. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The critical properties of polymer solutions confined in thin‐film environments is studied with simple scaling arguments and a molecular theory. For purely repulsive surfaces, the critical volume fraction is a universal function of x = N1/2/L, where N is the chain length and L is the film thickness. The critical volume fraction is nonmonotonic in x and shows a deep minimum at a film thickness several times larger than the chain's radius of gyration. This nonmonotonic behavior results from the interplay between the surface–polymer entropic repulsion and the tendency of the film to avoid large density gradients. The critical temperature is a monotonically increasing function of L, as L goes from the two‐dimensional limit to the three‐dimensional limit. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Thin films of fluids are playing a leading role in countless natural and industrial processes. Here we study the stability and dewetting dynamics of viscoelastic polymer thin films. The dewetting of polystyrene close to the glass transition reveals unexpected features: asymmetric rims collecting the dewetted liquid and logarithmic growth laws that we explain by considering the nonlinear velocity dependence of friction at the fluid/solid interface and by evoking residual stresses within the film. Systematically varying the time so that films were stored below the glass-transition temperature, we studied simultaneously the probability for film rupture and the dewetting dynamics at early stages. Both approaches proved independently the significance of residual stresses arising from the fast solvent evaporation associated with the spin-coating process. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The formation of ruptured poly[2‐methoxy‐5‐(2′‐ethyl‐hexyloxy)‐1,4‐phenyl vinylene] (MEH–PPV) thin films coated from undried tetrahydrofuran (THF) solutions was investigated. Because of the incompatibility of water and MEH–PPV, the polymer films coated from THF/water solutions showed a ruptured film structure. In the photoluminescence (PL) spectra of the polymer thin films, the ruptured polymer films showed a redshifted emission in comparison with continuous polymer thin films. According to a comparison of the PL spectra of polymer solutions and films, MEH–PPV in THF showed a coil–cylinder transition during precipitation from solution. Because of the incompatibility of water and MEH–PPV, an increase in the water content could increase the ratio of polymer chains in the cylinder conformation, resulting in a redshifted emission for the films. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The microstructure of the plasma‐polymerized methylmethacrylate (ppMMA) films is characterized using neutron reflectivity (NR) as a function of the plasma reaction time or film thickness. Variation in the crosslink density normal to the substrate surface is examined by swelling the film with a solvent, d‐nitrobenzene (dNB). In the presence of dNB, uniform swelling is observed throughout the bulk as well as at the air surface, and silicon oxide interfaces. The results indicate that the MMA film prepared by plasma polymerization (ppMMA) has a uniform crosslink density from air surface to substrate surface. Additionally, the scattering length density of the plasma‐polymerized MMA film (SLD ≈ 0.750 × 10−6 Å−2) is much lower than that of a conventional PMMA film (SLD = 1.177 × 10−6 Å−2). The increase in film thickness following dNB sorption is 7.5% and at least 36% for the ppMMA and PMMA films, respectively. This suggests that the films formed by plasma polymerization are different from conventional polymers in chemical structure. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Electrochemical intercalation of lithium in thin films of amorphous hydrogenated silicon (a-Si:H), deposited at temperatures of 100 and 250°C on stainless-steel substrates, is studied. It is shown that the discharge capacity of films of identical thicknesses manufactured at a temperature of 250°C is greater than that for films produced at of 100°C. Dependence of the discharge capacity of the films manufactured at 250°C on their thickness is examined. It is established that an increase in the film thickness leads to acceleration of the decrease in the discharge capacity in the course of cycling. At a current density of 0.175 mA cm?2, the discharge capacity of films 0.25 and 1.35 μm thick equals nearly 2 Ah g?1 in a third cycle, whereas in a hundredth cycle it amounts to 1.10 and 0.37 Ah g?1, respectively. The diffusion coefficient for lithium in the films is equal to ~10-13 cm2s?1.  相似文献

With time-resolved small-angle neutron scattering (TR-SANS), the crystallization kinetics of polyethylene from deuterated o-xylene solutions upon a temperature jump have been investigated. On the basis of a morphological model of coexisting lamellar stacks and coil chains in solution, experimental data have been quantitatively analyzed to provide structural information, such as the lamellar long period, the lamellar crystal thickness, the thickness of the amorphous layers between lamellae, the degree of crystallinity, and the crystal growth rate at various degrees of undercooling. The viability of TR-SANS for studying polymer crystallization is demonstrated through the consistency of these measurements and well-established knowledge of polyethylene crystallization from xylene solutions. One unique feature of this experimentation is that both the growth of lamellar crystals and the condensation of coil chains from solution are monitored simultaneously. The ratio of the crystal growth to the chain consumption rate decreases rapidly with a decreasing degree of undercooling. The Avrami analysis suggests that the growth mechanism approaches two-dimensional behavior at higher temperatures, and this is consistent with the observation of an increasing ratio of the sharp-surface area to the bulk crystal growth rate with temperature. The limitations, possible remedies, and potentials of TR-SANS for studying polymer crystallization are discussed. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Experimental observations (ellipsometry, scanning force microscopy, and nuclear magnetic recsonance (NMR)) of the freezing behavior of thin supported films as well as the free surface of atactic polystyrene are reported, taken at a particularly small molecular weight of 2 kg/mol. Remarkably, we find the same effect of reduction of the glass transition temperature, Tg, as observed earlier with much longer molecules. Furthermore, surface melting is observed by NMR, with the molten layer thickness similar to what has been observed with larger molecular weight. We conclude that molecular geometry effects cannot account for these observations, and that a consistent explanation must be presentable in a continuum picture. On the basis of the capillary mode spectrum of the free surface and of the supported films, we present such a model and find that it accounts very consistently with all observations made so far, at least with polystyrene. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Highly-localized focused laser spike (FLaSk) heating of polymer thin films is a resist- and developer-free alternative to two-dimensional (2D) laser direct write for creating patterns on the single micron or, by exploiting overlap effects, submicron scale. The massive temporal and spatial thermal gradients and resulting thermal Marangoni stresses generated by FLaSk are an effective means for the directed dewetting and patterning of such films. Here, the general applicability of this technique to glassy amorphous polymer thin film systems is investigated through systematic investigation of film thickness, glass transition temperature, and polymer mobility. The results reveal that the important parameters are the film thickness (coupled to the optical heating effects through anti-reflection coating effects) and the high-temperature polymer melt mobility, allowing for generation of single features with linewidths of down to ∼1 μm. Further, the introduction of spatial mobility variations by using polymer brushes, bilayers, and microphase separated block copolymers leads to additional profile manipulation effects (i.e. spontaneous 2D pattern generation and flattened top profiles). © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymer molecules at solid or fluid interfaces have an enormous spectrum of applications in a wide variety of technologies as lubricants, adhesion modifiers, and protective surface coatings. Because polymer brushes have great potential to be used in such applications, there is a need to determine their structure and efficiency in reduced spaces. Using neutron reflectivity, we have directly quantified the density distribution of opposing polymer brushes under confinement in good solvent conditions under confinement. Our measurements show that the density profile in the overlap region between opposing polymer brushes flattens, consistent with predictions from molecular-dynamics simulations. In addition, a significant increase in the density at the anchoring surfaces due to the collapse of the brush layers was observed. This collapse of the brushes in restricted geometries suggests that high-density brushes do not interpenetrate significantly under good solvent conditions. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We present the first measurements of the simultaneous diffusion, surface enhancement, and evaporation of a plasticizer from a polymer, thin-film matrix using neutron reflection techniques. The reflectivity profiles as a function of the annealing time at an elevated temperature yield the time-dependent, plasticizer volume fraction profiles in a polyester–polyurethane (Estane) film. Thin, plasticizer-enriched layers form at both the polymer/substrate and polymer/air interfaces for annealed and unannealed samples. The diffusion equations for a material diffusing through a film and then evaporating into a vacuum at the free surface describe the loss of the plasticizer from the film for annealed samples. The loss of the plasticizer from the film is not limited by the movement of the plasticizer through the polymer matrix but is dominated by the plasticizer's rate of evaporation from the surface. The rate of evaporation and the volume fraction profiles for the plasticizer at the substrate interface are both consistent with surface attractions dominating over bulk attractions between the miscible plasticizer and the polymer. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Thermal concentration fluctuation in the blends of deuterated poly(ethylene oxide) (dPEO) and poly(vinyl acetate-co-vinyl alcohol) [P(VAc-VOH)] with various VOH contents fOH were examined by small angle neutron scattering techniques at a fixed blend composition, dPEO/P(VAc-VOH) = 20/80 which is close to the critical composition. Blends at the highest fOH (=0.35) showed a non-Lorentzian scattering profile: specifically the scattering intensities at the low q (angle) region were suppressed compared to those expected from the random phase approximation (RPA) theory. However, for the blends at lower fOH (≤0.28), the profiles could be represented by the RPA. Using the RPA we determined effective values of the Flory-Huggins interaction parameter χeff as a function of fOH (=0–0.28). The χeff showed the minimum around fOH = 0.1–0.18 meaning the highest miscibility of the blend at these fOH. On the basis of the random copolymer theory, we evaluated the three interaction parameters χAc–EO, χEO–OH, and χAc–OH separately from the χeff(fOH) and found the order of magnitude; χAc–EO < 0 < χEO–OH < χAc–OH. The largest positive χAc–OH showing intrachain interaction in the P(VAc-VOH) copolymer was concluded to be the origin of the enhanced miscibility at around fOH = 0.1–0.18. On the basis of the Coleman and Painter's theory, the effects of hydrogen bonding on these three χA-B were discussed. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
