The effect of nanoscale confinement on the glass transition temperature, Tg, of freely standing polystyrene (PS) films was determined using the temperature dependence of a fluorescence intensity ratio associated with pyrene dye labeled to the polymer. The ratio of the intensity of the third fluorescence peak to that of the first fluorescence peak in 1-pyrenylmethyl methacrylate-labeled PS (MApyrene-labeled PS) decreased with decreasing temperature, and the intersection of the linear temperature dependences in the rubbery and glassy states yielded the measurement of Tg. The sensitivity of this method to Tg was also shown in bulk, supported PS and poly(isobutyl methacrylate) films. With free-standing PS films, a strong effect of confinement on Tg was evident at thicknesses less than 80–90 nm. For MApyrene-labeled PS with Mn = 701 kg mol−1, a 41-nm-thick film exhibited a 47 K reduction in Tg relative to bulk PS. A strong molecular weight dependence of the Tg-confinement effect was also observed, with a 65-nm-thick free-standing film exhibiting a reduction in Tg relative to bulk PS of 19 K with Mn = 701 kg mol−1 and 31 K with Mn = 1460 kg mol−1. The data are in reasonable agreement with results of Forrest, Dalnoki-Veress, and Dutcher who performed the seminal studies on Tg-confinement effects in free-standing PS films. The utility of self-referencing fluorescence for novel studies of confinement effects in free-standing films is discussed. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The temperature dependence of the mean size of nanoscale free‐volume holes, 〈Vh〉, in polymer blend system consisting of polar and nonpolar polymers has been investigated. The positron lifetime spectra were measured for a series of polymer blends between polyethylene (PE) and nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) as a function of temperature from 100 to 300 K. The glass transition temperatures (Tg) for blends were determined from the ortho‐positronium (o‐Ps) lifetime τ3 and the mean size of free‐volume holes 〈Vh〉 versus temperature as a function of wt % of NBR. The Tgs estimated from the PALS data agree very well with those estimated from DSC in view of different time scales involved in the two measurements. Both DSC and PALS results for the blends showed two clear Tgs of a two‐phase system. Furthermore, from the variation of thermal expansivity of the nanoscale free‐volume holes, the thermal expansion coefficients of glass and amorphous phases were estimated. Variations of the o‐Ps formation probability I3 versus temperature for pure PE and blends with low wt % of NBR were interpreted on the basis of the spur reaction model of Ps formation with reference to the effects of localized electrons and trapping centers produced by positron irradiation. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effects of confinement on glass transition temperature (Tg) and physical aging are measured in polystyrene (PS), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), and poly(2-vinyl pyridine) (P2VP) nanocomposites containing 10- to 15-nm-diameter silica nanospheres or 47-nm-diameter alumina nanospheres. Nanocomposites are made by spin coating films from sonicated solutions of polymer, nanofiller, and dye. The Tgs and physical aging rates are measured by fluorescence of trace levels of dye in the films. At 0.1–10 vol % nanofiller, Tg values can be enhanced or depressed relative to neat, bulk Tg (Tg,bulk) or invariant with nanofiller content. For alumina nanocomposites, Tg increases relative to Tg,bulk by as much as 16 K in P2VP, decreases by as much as 5 K in PMMA, and is invariant in PS. By analogy with thin polymer films, these results are explained by wetted P2VP–nanofiller interfaces with attractive interactions, nonwetted PMMA–nanofiller interfaces (free space at the interface), and wetted PS–nanofiller interfaces lacking attractive interactions, respectively. The presence of wetted or nonwetted interfaces is controlled by choice of solvent. For example, 0.1–0.6 vol % silica/PMMA nanocomposites exhibit Tg enhancements as large as 5 K or Tg reductions as large as 17 K relative to Tg,bulk when films are made from methyl ethyl ketone or acetic acid solutions, respectively. A factor of 17 reduction of physical aging rate relative to that of neat, bulk P2VP is demonstrated in a 4 vol % alumina/P2VP nanocomposite. This suggests that a strategy for achieving nonequilibrium, glassy polymeric systems that are stable or nearly stable to physical aging is to incorporate well-dispersed nanoparticles possessing attractive interfacial interactions with the polymer. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Recently, there has been significant interest in measuring the glass transition temperature (Tg) of thin polymer films floated atop liquid substrates. However, such films still have intrinsically asymmetric interfaces, that is, a free surface and a liquid–polymer interface. In an effort to analyze the influence of different liquids on the Tg of confined polymers in which there is no interfacial asymmetry, a colloidal suspension of polystyrene (PS) nanoparticles (NPs) was employed. The Tgs of PS NPs suspended in either glycerol or an ionic liquid were characterized using differential scanning calorimetry. Nanoparticles suspended in an ionic liquid showed an invariance of Tg with confinement, that is, decreasing diameter. In contrast, nanoparticles suspended in glycerol showed a slight decrease in Tg with confinement. The dependence of NP Tg on the nature of the surrounding liquid exhibited a positive correlation with the interfacial energy of the liquid–PS interface and no correlation with interfacial softness, as measured by viscosity. A comparison of the results with thin films supported by liquid or solid substrates revealed a nontrivial interplay between interfacial softness and interfacial interactions on the Tg of confined PS. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of individual electrospun polymer polyvinyl alcohol fibers of varying diameter was measured using atomic force microscopy (AFM) based nanomechanical thermal analysis. Indentation and bending of individual electrospun fibers using AFM allowed the calculation of the elastic modulus of the polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers across a range of different temperatures. The elastic modulus of electrospun PVA fibers was observed to decrease significantly when passing through Tg, which allowed accurate determination of Tg. The Tg of electrospun PVA fibers was shown to decrease for smaller fiber diameters especially for fiber diameters below 250 nm. This size‐dependent glass transition behavior of electrospun PVA fibers is indicated as being due to polymer chain confinement. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Measurements of average free volume hole sizes, 〈vf〉, and the fractional free volumes, fps, in vulcanized cis-polyisoprene (CPI), high-vinyl polybutadiene (HVBD), and their 50 : 50 blend were made via determination of orthopositronium annihilation lifetimes. The results are compared to corresponding data on the uncured materials. On crosslinking, 〈vf〉 decreases in the rubbery state but remains essentially unchanged in the glass. This is consistent with the expectation that the crosslinks greatly restrict the thermal expansion of the chains above the glass transition temperature (Tg) but have less influence on the packing density in the glass. Scaling relationships between 〈vf〉, fps, the thermal expansion coefficient αf = dfps/dt, and Tg are examined. We find that 〈vfg, the hole volume at Tg, and fps,g, the fractional free volume at Tg, each increase significantly with increasing Tg. This behavior is consistent with previous observations reported in the literature and has been interpreted as a manifestation of the kinetic character of the glass transition. High-Tg polymers need a larger free volume to pass into the liquid state. The change in expansion coefficient on passing from the glass to the liquid, Δαf = αf,l − αf,g, increases slowly with Tg, as predicted by free volume theory. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The microstructure of the free volume was studied for an amorphous perfluorinated polymer (Tg = 378 K). To this aim we employed pressure–volume–temperature experiments (PVT) and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS). Using the Simha‐Somcynsky equation of state the hole free volume fraction h and the specific free and occupied volumes, Vf = hV and Vocc = (1 ? h)V, were determined. Their expansivities and compressibilities were calculated from fits of the Tait equation to the volume data. It was found that in the glass Vocc has a particular high compressibility, while the compressibility of Vf is rather low, although h (300 K) = 0.108 is large. In the rubbery state the free volume dominates the total compressibility. From the PALS spectra the hole size distribution, its mean, 〈vh〉, and mean dispersion, σh, were calculated. From a comparison of 〈vh〉 with Vf a constant hole density of Nh′ = 0.25 × 1021 g?1 was estimated. The volume of the smallest representative freely fluctuating subsystem, 〈VSV〉 ∝ 1/σh2, is unusually small. This was explained by an inherent topologic disorder of this polymer. 〈vh〉 and σh show an exponential‐like decrease with increasing pressure P at 298 K. The hole density, calculated from Nh′ = Vf/〈vh〉, seems to show an increase with P which is unexpected. This was explained by the compression of holes in the glass in two, rather than three, dimensions. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 45: 2519–2534, 2007  相似文献

An optical photobleaching method has been used to measure the segmental dynamics of a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) glass during uniaxial creep deformation at temperatures between Tg ? 9 K and Tg ? 20 K. Up to 1000‐fold increases in mobility are observed during deformation, supporting the view that enhanced segmental mobility allows flow in polymer glasses. Although the Eyring model describes this mobility enhancement well at low stress, it fails to capture the dramatic mobility enhancement after flow onset, where in addition the shape of the relaxation time distribution narrows significantly. Regions of lower mobility accelerate their dynamics more in response to an external stress than do regions of high mobility. Thus, local environments in the sample become more dynamically homogeneous during flow. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 47: 1713–1727, 2009  相似文献

The structurally ordered polymer, triphenylamine‐pendant polypeptide (PATPA: poly[γ‐4‐(N,N‐diphenylamino‐phenyl)‐L ‐glutamine]), was prepared in order to obtain high hole mobility and high thermal stability. The hole mobility obtained for PATPA (ca. 10−5 cm2/Vsec) at room temperature is higher than that for poly(N‐vinylcarbazole) (PVK) (ca. 10−7 cm2/Vsec) or that of carbazole‐pendant polypeptide (PCLG) (ca. 10−8 cm2/Vsec). These results are supported by thermally stimulated current (TSC) measurements because the TSC can be correlated with the mobility. The glass‐transition temperature (Tg) of PATPA was estimated to be about 130° by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). From these results, PATPA is an alternative candidate as a photoconductive polymer with high thermal stability and high hole mobility. The ordered structure along the main chain is thought to facilitate hole transport. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 38: 362–368, 2000  相似文献

Poly(2‐alkyl‐2‐oxazoline)s (PAOx) exhibit different crystallization behavior depending on the length of the alkyl side chain. PAOx having methyl, ethyl, or propyl side chains do not show any bulk crystallization. Crystallization in the heating cycle, that is, cold crystallization, is observed for PAOx with butyl and pentyl side chains. For PAOx with longer alkyl side chains crystallization occurs in the cooling cycle. The different crystallization behavior is attributed to the different polymer chain mobility in line with the glass transition temperature (Tg) dependency on alkyl side chain length. The decrease in chain mobility with decreasing alkyl side chain length hinders the relaxation of the polymer backbone to the thermodynamic equilibrium crystalline structure. Double melting behavior is observed for PButOx and PiPropOx which is explained by the melt‐recrystallization mechanism. Isothermal crystallization experiments of PButOx between 60 and 90 °C and PiPropOx between 90 and 150 °C show that PAOx can crystallize in bulk when enough time is given. The decrease of Tg and the corresponding increase in chain mobility at T > Tg with increasing alkyl side chain length can be attributed to an increasing distance between the polymer backbones and thus decreasing average strength of amide dipole interactions. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We have investigated the effect of sample preparation on the glass‐transition temperature (Tg) of thin films of polystyrene (PS). By preparing and measuring the glass‐transition temperature Tg of multilayered polymer films, we are able to assess the contribution of the spincoating process to the reduced Tg values often reported for thin PS films. We find that it is possible to determine a Tg even on the first heating cycle, and that by the third heating cycle (a total annealing time of 15 min at T = 393 K) the Tg value has reached a steady state. By comparing multilayered versus single layered films we find that the whole Tg depends only on the total film thickness, and not on the thickness of the individual layers. These results strongly suggest that the spincasting process does not contribute significantly to Tg reductions in thin polymer films. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We used neutron reflectivity to measure the interfacial width in the immiscible system polystyrene/poly(n‐butyl methacrylate) (PS/PnBMA). Measurements were made on the same samples at temperatures ranging from below the glass‐transition temperature (Tg) of PS to slightly above. We observed significant broadening of the interface at temperatures below the Tg of PS, indicating chain mobility below the bulk Tg value. The interfacial width exhibited a plateau at a value of 20 Å in the temperature range of 365 K < T < 377 K. A control experiment involving hydrogenated and deuterated PS films (hPS/dPS) showed no such broadening over the same temperature region. The results are consistent with a reduction of the Tg of PS in the interfacial region of ~20 K. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 39: 2664–2670, 2001  相似文献

Commercial polydisperse atactic poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) exhibits a decreased glass transition temperature (Tg) when the film thickness is less than ~60 nm, whereas more model atactic PMMA shows an increased Tg in thin films supported on clean silicon wafers. NMR indicates no difference in tacticity, so the divergent thin film behavior appears related to the relative distribution of molecular mass. Extraction of some low molecular weight PMMA components from the commercial sample results in a significant modification of the thin film Tg compared with the initial PMMA fraction. The extracted sample exhibits initially a slight decrease in Tg as the film thickness is reduced below ~60 nm, but then Tg appears to increase for films thinner than 20 nm. These results illustrate the sensitivity of polymer thin film properties to low‐molecular mass components and could explain some of the contradictory reports on the Tg of polymer thin films that exist in the literature. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. It remains a challenge to precisely tailor the morphology of polymer monolayers to control charge transport. Herein, the effect of the dissolution temperature (Tdis) is investigated as a powerful strategy for morphology control. Low Tdis values cause extended polymer aggregation in solution and induce larger nanofibrils in a monolayer network with more pronounced π–π stacking. The field‐effect mobility of the corresponding monolayer transistors is significantly enhanced by a factor of four compared to devices obtained from high Tdis with a value approaching 1 cm2 V?1 s?1. Besides that, the solution kinetics reveal a higher growth rate of aggregates at low Tdis, and filtration experiments further confirm that the dependence of the fibril width in monolayers on Tdis is consistent with the aggregate size in solution. The generalizability of the Tdis effect on polymer aggregation is demonstrated using three other conjugated polymer systems. These results open new avenues for the precise control of polymer aggregation for high‐mobility monolayer transistors.  相似文献

Diffusion of gases in polymers below the glass transition temperature, Tg, is strongly modulated by local chain dynamics. For this reason, an analysis of pulsed field gradient (PFG) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) diffusion measurements considering the viscoelastic behavior of polymers is proposed. Carbon‐13 PFG NMR measurements of [13C]O2 diffusion in polymer films at 298 K are performed. Data obtained in polymers with Tg above (polycarbonate) and below (polyethylene) the temperature set for diffusion measurements are analyzed with a stretched exponential. The results show that the distribution of diffusion coefficients in amorphous phases below Tg is wider than that above it. Moreover, from a PFG NMR perspective, full randomization of the dynamic processes in polymers below Tg requires long diffusion times, which suggests fluctuations of local chain density on a macroscopic scale may occur. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. High‐pressure rheological behavior of polymer melts containing dissolved carbon dioxide (CO2) at concentrations up to 6 wt % were investigated using a high‐pressure extrusion slit die rheometer. In particular, the steady shear viscosity of poly(methyl methacrylate), polypropylene, low‐density polyethylene, and poly(vinylidene fluoride) with dissolved CO2 were measured for shear rates ranging from 1 to 500 s?1 and under pressure conditions up to 30 MPa. The viscosity of all samples revealed a reduction in the presence of CO2 with its extent dependent on CO2 concentration, pressure, and the polymer used. Two types of viscoelastic scaling models were developed to predict the effects of both CO2 concentration and pressure on the viscosity of the polymer melts. The first approach utilized a set of equations analogous to the Williams–Landel–Ferry equation for melts between the glass‐transition temperature (Tg) and Tg + 100 °C, whereas the second approach used equations of the Arrhenius form for melts more than 100 °C above Tg. The combination of these traditional viscoelastic scaling models with predictions for Tg depression by a diluent (Chow model) were used to estimate the observed effects of dissolved CO2 on polymer melt rheology. In this approach, the only parameters involved are physical properties of the pure polymer melt that are either available in the existing literature or can be measured under atmospheric conditions in the absence of CO2. The ability of the proposed scaling models to accurately predict the viscosity of polymer melts with dissolved high‐pressure CO2 were examined for each of the polymer systems. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Cast‐hybrid films composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and silver nitrate were treated according to three different ways, thermal annealing, UV‐irradiation, and chemical reduction by a borohydride solution, to obtain PVA/silver nanocomposite films. The nanostructuration process was studied as a function of the treatment conditions, and discussed as a function of the mobility state of the polymer chains in the nanocomposite matrix during treatment. A homogeneous dispersion of crystalline silver nanoparticles was obtained by thermal annealing above Tg and below Tm and UV‐lamp irradiation below Tg. For these two treatments, the major processing parameters were the annealing temperature and time and the UV‐exposure time, respectively. For low‐conversion rate in Ag(0), the films evolved upon ageing at room temperature. Totally different morphology and Ag(0) conversion were achieved by chemical reduction in a borohydride solution. All the silver ions were reduced into Ag(0), and crystalline silver nanoparticles layers parallel to the film surface were observed after the treatment. This morphology was related to the high‐swollen state of the polymer matrix during treatment. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 46: 2062–2071, 2008  相似文献
