We consider a class of non-linear mixed integer programs with n integer variables and k continuous variables. Solving instances from this class to optimality is an NP-hard problem. We show that for the cases with k=1 and k=2, every optimal solution is integral. In contrast to this, for every k≥3 there exist instances where every optimal solution takes non-integral values. In this paper, we introduce a transformation that converts a class of linear and nonlinear semidefinite programming (SDP) problems into nonlinear optimization problems. For those problems of interest, the transformation replaces matrix-valued constraints by vector-valued ones, hence reducing the number of constraints by an order of magnitude. The class of transformable problems includes instances of SDP relaxations of combinatorial optimization problems with binary variables as well as other important SDP problems. We also derive gradient formulas for the objective function of the resulting nonlinear optimization problem and show that both function and gradient evaluations have affordable complexities that effectively exploit the sparsity of the problem data. This transformation, together with the efficient gradient formulas, enables the solution of very large-scale SDP problems by gradient-based nonlinear optimization techniques. In particular, we propose a first-order log-barrier method designed for solving a class of large-scale linear SDP problems. This algorithm operates entirely within the space of the transformed problem while still maintaining close ties with both the primal and the dual of the original SDP problem. The Cardinality Constrained Circuit Problem (CCCP) is the problem of finding a minimum cost circuit in a graph where the circuit is constrained to have at most k edges. The CCCP is NP-Hard. We present classes of facet-inducing inequalities for the convex hull of feasible circuits, and a branch-and-cut solution approach using these inequalities. Lagrangian relaxation is often an efficient tool to solve (large-scale) optimization problems, even nonconvex. However it introduces a duality gap, which should be small for the method to be really efficient. Here we make a geometric study of the duality gap. Given a nonconvex problem, we formulate in a first part a convex problem having the same dual. This formulation involves a convexification in the product of the three spaces containing respectively the variables, the objective and the constraints. We apply our results to several relaxation schemes, especially one called “Lagrangean decomposition” in the combinatorial-optimization community, or “operator splitting” elsewhere. For a polytope in the [0,1] n cube, Eisenbrand and Schulz showed recently that the maximum Chvátal rank is bounded above by O(n 2logn) and bounded below by (1+ε)n for some ε>0. Chvátal cuts are equivalent to Gomory fractional cuts, which are themselves dominated by Gomory mixed integer cuts. What do these upper and lower bounds become when the rank is defined relative to Gomory mixed integer cuts? An upper bound of n follows from existing results in the literature. In this note, we show that the lower bound is also equal to n. This result still holds for mixed 0,1 polyhedra with n binary variables. Network loading problems occur in the design of telecommunication networks, in many different settings. For instance, bifurcated or non-bifurcated routing (also called splittable and unsplittable) can be considered. In most settings, the same polyhedral structures return. A better understanding of these structures therefore can have a major impact on the tractability of polyhedral-guided solution methods. In this paper, we investigate the polytopes of the problem restricted to one arc/edge of the network (the undirected/directed edge capacity problem) for the non-bifurcated routing case.?As an example, one of the basic variants of network loading is described, including an integer linear programming formulation. As the edge capacity problems are relaxations of this network loading problem, their polytopes are intimately related. We give conditions under which the inequalities of the edge capacity polytopes define facets of the network loading polytope. We describe classes of strong valid inequalities for the edge capacity polytopes, and we derive conditions under which these constraints define facets. For the diverse classes the complexity of lifting projected variables is stated.?The derived inequalities are tested on (i) the edge capacity problem itself and (ii) the described variant of the network loading problem. The results show that the inequalities substantially reduce the number of nodes needed in a branch-and-cut approach. Recently, Cornuéjols and Dawande have considered a special class of 0-1 programs that turns out to be hard for existing IP solvers. One of them is a sorting-based algorithm, based on an idea of Wolsey. In this paper, we show how to improve both the running time and the space requirements of this algorithm. The drastic reduction of space needed allows us to solve much larger instances than was possible before using this technique. Given an undirected graph G=(V,E) with |V|=n and an integer k between 0 and n, the maximization graph partition (MAX-GP) problem is to determine a subset SV of k nodes such that an objective function w(S) is maximized. The MAX-GP problem can be formulated as a binary quadratic program and it is NP-hard. Semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxations of such quadratic programs have been used to design approximation algorithms with guaranteed performance ratios for various MAX-GP problems. Based on several earlier results, we present an improved rounding method using an SDP relaxation, and establish improved approximation ratios for several MAX-GP problems, including Dense-Subgraph, Max-Cut, Max-Not-Cut, and Max-Vertex-Cover. This paper deals with exponential neighborhoods for combinatorial optimization problems. Exponential neighborhoods are large sets of feasible solutions whose size grows exponentially with the input length. We are especially interested in exponential neighborhoods over which the TSP (respectively, the QAP) can be solved in polynomial time, and we investigate combinatorial and algorithmical questions related to such neighborhoods.?First, we perform a careful study of exponential neighborhoods for the TSP. We investigate neighborhoods that can be defined in a simple way via assignments, matchings in bipartite graphs, partial orders, trees and other combinatorial structures. We identify several properties of these combinatorial structures that lead to polynomial time optimization algorithms, and we also provide variants that slightly violate these properties and lead to NP-complete optimization problems. Whereas it is relatively easy to find exponential neighborhoods over which the TSP can be solved in polynomial time, the corresponding situation for the QAP looks pretty hopeless: Every exponential neighborhood that is considered in this paper provably leads to an NP-complete optimization problem for the QAP. Separated continuous linear programs (SCLP) are a class of continuous linear programs which, among other things, can serve as a useful model for dynamic network problems where storage is permitted at the nodes. Recent work on SCLP has produced a detailed duality theory, conditions under which an optimal solution exists with a finite number of breakpoints, a purification algorithm, as well as a convergent algorithm for solving SCLP under certain assumptions on the problem data. This paper combines much of this work to develop a possible approach for solving a wider range of SCLP problems, namely those with fairly general costs. The techniques required to implement the algorithm are no more than standard (finite-dimensional) linear programming and line searching, and the resulting algorithm is simplex-like in nature. We conclude the paper with the numerical results obtained by using a simple implementation of the algorithm to solve a small problem. This paper introduces and analyses a new algorithm for minimizing a convex function subject to a finite number of convex inequality constraints. It is assumed that the Lagrangian of the problem is strongly convex. The algorithm combines interior point methods for dealing with the inequality constraints and quasi-Newton techniques for accelerating the convergence. Feasibility of the iterates is progressively enforced thanks to shift variables and an exact penalty approach. Global and q-superlinear convergence is obtained for a fixed penalty parameter; global convergence to the analytic center of the optimal set is ensured when the barrier parameter tends to zero, provided strict complementarity holds. Nonlinear rescaling vs. smoothing technique in convex optimization   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We introduce an alternative to the smoothing technique approach for constrained optimization. As it turns out for any given smoothing function there exists a modification with particular properties. We use the modification for Nonlinear Rescaling (NR) the constraints of a given constrained optimization problem into an equivalent set of constraints.?The constraints transformation is scaled by a vector of positive parameters. The Lagrangian for the equivalent problems is to the correspondent Smoothing Penalty functions as Augmented Lagrangian to the Classical Penalty function or MBFs to the Barrier Functions. Moreover the Lagrangians for the equivalent problems combine the best properties of Quadratic and Nonquadratic Augmented Lagrangians and at the same time are free from their main drawbacks.?Sequential unconstrained minimization of the Lagrangian for the equivalent problem in primal space followed by both Lagrange multipliers and scaling parameters update leads to a new class of NR multipliers methods, which are equivalent to the Interior Quadratic Prox methods for the dual problem.?We proved convergence and estimate the rate of convergence of the NR multipliers method under very mild assumptions on the input data. We also estimate the rate of convergence under various assumptions on the input data.?In particular, under the standard second order optimality conditions the NR method converges with Q-linear rate without unbounded increase of the scaling parameters, which correspond to the active constraints.?We also established global quadratic convergence of the NR methods for Linear Programming with unique dual solution.?We provide numerical results, which strongly support the theory. U. Faigle and W. Kern have recently extended the work of their earlier paper and of M. Queyranne, F. Spieksma and F. Tardella and have shown that a dual greedy algorithm works for a system of linear inequalities with {:0,1}-coefficients defined in terms of antichains of an underlying poset and a submodular function on the set of ideals of the poset under some additional condition on the submodular function.?In this note we show that Faigle and Kern’s dual greedy polyhedra belong to a class of submodular flow polyhedra, i.e., Faigle and Kern’s problem is a special case of the submodular flow problem that can easily be solved by their greedy algorithm. In this paper necessary, and sufficient optimality conditions are established without Lipschitz continuity for convex composite continuous optimization model problems subject to inequality constraints. Necessary conditions for the special case of the optimization model involving max-min constraints, which frequently arise in many engineering applications, are also given. Optimality conditions in the presence of Lipschitz continuity are routinely obtained using chain rule formulas of the Clarke generalized Jacobian which is a bounded set of matrices. However, the lack of derivative of a continuous map in the absence of Lipschitz continuity is often replaced by a locally unbounded generalized Jacobian map for which the standard form of the chain rule formulas fails to hold. In this paper we overcome this situation by constructing approximate Jacobians for the convex composite function involved in the model problem using ε-perturbations of the subdifferential of the convex function and the flexible generalized calculus of unbounded approximate Jacobians. Following the ideas of Castelnuovo and Enriques, we classify the birational equivalence classes of double planes which are rational or ruled surfaces. In order to do this, we prove that the vanishing of the m-adjoint linear system to the branch curve of the canonical resolution of a double plane, for m≥2, is a necessary and sufficient condition for the ruledness of the double plane. We obtain local estimates of the distance to a set defined by equality constraints under assumptions which are weaker than those previously used in the literature. Specifically, we assume that the constraints mapping has a Lipschitzian derivative, and satisfies a certain 2-regularity condition at the point under consideration. This setting directly subsumes the classical regular case and the twice differentiable 2-regular case, for which error bounds are known, but it is significantly richer than either of these two cases. When applied to a certain equation-based reformulation of the nonlinear complementarity problem, our results yield an error bound under an assumption more general than b-regularity. The latter appears to be the weakest assumption under which a local error bound for complementarity problems was previously available. We also discuss an application of our results to the convergence rate analysis of the exterior penalty method for solving irregular problems. Semidefinite relaxations of quadratic 0-1 programming or graph partitioning problems are well known to be of high quality. However, solving them by primal-dual interior point methods can take much time even for problems of moderate size. The recent spectral bundle method of Helmberg and Rendl can solve quite efficiently large structured equality-constrained semidefinite programs if the trace of the primal matrix variable is fixed, as happens in many applications. We extend the method so that it can handle inequality constraints without seriously increasing computation time. In addition, we introduce inexact null steps. This abolishes the need of computing exact eigenvectors for subgradients, which brings along significant advantages in theory and in practice.
