A metric space is said to be locally non‐compact if every neighborhood contains a sequence that is eventually bounded away from every element of the space, hence contains no accumulation point. We show within recursive mathematics that a nonvoid complete metric space is locally non‐compact iff it is without isolated points. The result has an interesting consequence in computable analysis: If a complete metric space has a computable witness that it is without isolated points, then every neighborhood contains a computable sequence that is eventually computably bounded away from every computable element of the space. In a previous paper we constructed a full and faithful functor ?? from the category of locally compact metric spaces to the category of formal topologies (representations of locales). Here we show that for a real‐valued continuous function f, ??(f) factors through the localic positive reals if, and only if, f has a uniform positive lower bound on each ball in the locally compact space. S. Dolecki, G. Greco and A. Lechicki call a space X consonant if the co-compact topology and the upper Kuratowski topology on the set of closed subsets of X coincide. We call a space X hyperconsonant if Fell's topology and the (Kuratowski) convergence topology coincide. Recently, we proved that a first countable, locally paracompact, T 3-space is hyperconsonant if and only if the space possesses at most one point without a compact neighbourhood, extending the same result of D. Fremlin obtained for metrizable spaces. In this paper, we pursue the study of hyperconsonance within the framework of point spaces (countable T 1-spaces with exactly one accumulation point) and we compare consonance and hyperconsonance in such spaces. In particular, we answer a question of T. Nogura and D. Shakhmatov: does there exist a nonconsonant point space? We provide a Fréchet, -point space which is not consonant. Moreover, this example proves that the consonance is not preserved by continuous closed compact-covering maps of separable complete metrizable spaces onto Hausdorff spaces.  相似文献

First we prove that the approximative compactness of a nonempty set C in a normed linear space can be reformulated equivalently in another way.It is known that if C is a semi-Chebyshev closed and approximately compact set in a Banach space X,then the metric projectorπC from X onto C is continuous.Under the assumption that X is midpoint locally uniformly rotund,we prove that the approximative compactness of C is also necessary for the continuity of the projectorπC by the method of geometry of Banach spaces.Using this general result we find some necessary and sufficient conditions for T to have a continuous Moore-Penrose metric generalized inverse T~ ,where T is a bounded linear operator from an approximative compact and a rotund Banach space X into a midpoint locally uniformly rotund Banach space Y.  相似文献

Call a sequence in a metric space cofinally Cauchy if for each positive ε there exists a cofinal (rather than residual) set of indices whose corresponding terms are ε-close. We give a number of new characterizations of metric spaces for which each cofinally Cauchy sequence has a cluster point. For example, a space has such a metric if and only each continuous function defined on it is uniformly locally bounded. A number of results exploit a measure of local compactness functional that we introduce. We conclude with a short proof of Romaguera's Theorem: a metrizable space admits such a metric if and only if its set of points having a compact neighborhood has compact complement.  相似文献

We introduce the notion of compactly locally reflexive Banach spaces and show that a Banach space X is compactly locally reflexive if and only if for all reflexive Banach spaces Y. We show that X * has the approximation property if and only if X has the approximation property and is compactly locally reflexive. The weak metric approximation property was recently introduced by Lima and Oja. We study two natural weak compact versions of this property. If X is compactly locally reflexive then these two properties coincide. We also show how these properties are related to the compact approximation property and the compact approximation property with conjugate operators for dual spaces.  相似文献

For countably paracompact normal spaces X and locally compact separable metric spaces Y, a characterization is given for the closure of the set of densely continuous forms from X to Y in the hyperspace of nonempty closed subsets of X × Y under the Vietoris topology. This shows that for such X having no isolated points, every closed subset of X × R that is dense over X can be Vietoris approximated by a semicontinuous function on X.  相似文献
