Biodegradable PLA composites were prepared using microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and silver (Ag) nanoparticles. The main objective of the present study is to develop new biopolymer composites with good mechanical properties, thermal stability, maintaining the optical transparency and also providing antimicrobial properties through silver nanoparticle introduction. Composites were prepared with 1%wt of Ag nanoparticles and 5%wt of MCC using a twin-screw microextruder; film parameters were optimized in order to obtain a thickness range between 20 and 60 μm.PLA composites maintained optical transparency properties of the matrix, while MCC was able to reduce polymer permeability. Thermal analysis revealed that MCC increased PLA crystallinity and the mechanical properties of the composites demonstrated that tensile modulus was improved by microcrystalline cellulose.  相似文献

The structure of film composites based on methyl cellulose and fillers, such as montmorillonite and silver nanoparticles stabilized by poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (Poviargol), is studied by X-ray diffraction. In the composite, montmorillonite nanoparticles exist in the exfoliated state; when the content of the nanoparticles is below 7 wt %, the crystallinity of methyl cellulose increases. Owing to the presence of the filler and structural ordering of the matrix, elastic characteristics improve and the degradation temperature of the composites increases. The X-ray structural data show that the Ag particles in the methyl cellulose-Poviargol composite are 30 nm in size. The introduction of up to 20 wt % Poviargol assists the crystallization of methyl cellulose. The strength and strain characteristics of the film composites based on methyl cellulose and Poviargol make it possible to use these composites in medicine and agriculture.  相似文献

Summary: Nanocelluloses combine in a very exciting manner important properties of cellulose with amazing features of nano-scale materials. With a view to the increasing discussion on the potential risks of nanoparticles and nanotechnology to human health and the environment, it is important to point out that the nanocellulose fibers are irreversibly networked in the supramolecular cellulose structure. This contribution assembles the current knowledge in research, development, and application in the field of nanocelluloses through examples. The topics combine selected results on nanocelluloses from bacteria and wood as well as the formation and in situ shaping of cellulose bodies, the coating of materials with nanosized cellulose networks/supports, and the preparation of nanocellulose composites as well as the use of bacterial cellulose as novel type of medical implants.  相似文献

Biological organisms are produced from self-assembly of highly ordered functional units and are inherently complex and hierarchical, possessing macro-to-nanoscale features. It is a facile, low-cost and environmentally benign short-cut to artificial functional materials with unique multilevel structures and morphologies employing biological substances as platform for the self-assembly of various guest substrates. This review summarizes the recent advances in the fabrication of nanostructured materials with designed properties and functionalities by means of self-assembly of different guest substrates (such as metal oxide thin films, small molecules, polymers, biomacromolecules, nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes and colloidal spheres) on the surfaces of cellulose nanofibers of bulk natural cellulose substances. The combination of the specific chemical properties of the guest substrates and the unique physical features of the natural cellulose substances sheds new light on the design and syntheses of new functional nanomaterials.  相似文献

In recent decades, sustainable superhydrophobic surfaces from natural materials and sustainable processes have attracted increased interest due to their lower environmental footprint and potential applications in self-cleaning surfaces and biomedical devices. Although there is significant progress on selecting suitable nano and micro particles to prepare superhydrophobic surfaces, a comprehensive review on the direct use of sustainable colloidal particles (SCPs) is lacking. In this review, we highlight the recent advances on sustainable superhydrophobic surfaces using SCPs. The composition and properties, extraction methods, and chemical modifications are described, including cellulose nanocrystals, chitin/chitosan nanoparticles, and lignin nanoparticles. In addition to the physico–chemical properties and tunable dimensionality, the fabrication methodologies of superhydrophobic surfaces using modified colloids are described. Finally, the potential applications of these sustainable superhydrophobic surfaces ranging from oil/water separation, biomedical, water harvesting, biofabrication, microfluidic reactor, and food packaging are discussed together with a future perspective on the advances made.  相似文献

Deposition of nanoparticles on the surface of a variety of materials is a subject of great interest due to their potential applications in electronic devices, sensing, catalysis and bio-medical sciences. In this context, we have explored and compared various methodologies to generate gold and silver nanoparticles on the surface of cellulose fibers. It was found that boiling of the cellulose fibers in alkaline solution of gold and silver salts led to the formation and immobilization of gold and silver nanoparticles. However, in case of lecithin treated and thiol-modified cellulose fibers, high temperature was not essentially required for the formation and deposition of nanoparticles on cellulose substrate. In both these cases, fairly uniform metal nanoparticles were obtained in good yields (~43 wt% gold loading in case of thiol modified cellulose fibers) at room temperature. Borohydride-reduction method resulted in relatively lower loading (~22 wt%) with a wide size distribution of gold and silver nanoparticles on cellulose fibers. All these nanoparticle–cellulose composites were thoroughly characterized using scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV–visible spectroscopy, and elemental analyzer. Thiol modified cellulose–gold nanoparticle composites served as active catalysts in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol into 4-aminophenol.  相似文献

Eco-friendly all cellulose composites were developed using cellulose as matrix and nanocomposite (in situ generated copper nanoparticles modified Napier Grass Fibers (NGFs)) as fillers for the antibacterial applications. The content of the nanocomposite filler was increased from 1?wt.% to 5?wt.% in the cellulose matrix. All these composites were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Tensile, Thermo Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), and antibacterial tests. SEM-EDX analysis revealed the in situ generation of copper nanoparticles on the surface of the films. Further, all cellulose composites showed good thermal stability. A minimum of 30% increase in char residue was observed in all cellulose nanocomposites compared to matrix. Antibacterial analysis indicated an excellent clear zone formation against both Gram Negative (Escherichia coli) and Gram Positive (Staphylococcus) bacteria. Hence, all these cellulose nanocomposite films can be considered as antibacterial packaging and dressing materials in medical field.  相似文献

Native cellulose nanofibers are functionalized using luminescent metal nanoclusters to form a novel type of functional nanocellulose/nanocluster composite. Previously, various types of cellulose fibers have been functionalized with large, non-luminescent metal nanoparticles. Here, mechanically strong native cellulose nanofibers, also called nanofibrillatedcellulose (NFC), microfibrillatedcellulose (MFC) ornanocellulose, disintegrated from macroscopic cellulose pulp fibers are used as support for small and fluorescent silver nanoclusters. The functionalization occurs in a supramolecular manner, mediated by poly(methacrylic acid) that protects nanoclusters while it allows hydrogen bonding with cellulose, leading to composites with fluorescence and antibacterial activity.  相似文献

Regenerated bacterial cellulose (RBC) composites with zinc-oxide nanoparticles (ZnO) were prepared using a new strategy for enhanced biomedical applications of BC. Powdered BC was dissolved in N-methylmorpholine-N-oxide, and different concentrations of ZnO nanoparticles were mixed into the BC solution. RBC, RBC-ZnO1 (1 % ZnO) and ZnO-RBC2 (2 % ZnO) nanocomposite films were prepared by casting the solutions through an applicator. FE-SEM images confirmed the structural features and impregnation of the RBC films by nanoparticles. XRD analysis indicated the presence of specific peaks for RBC and ZnO in the composites. The RBC nanocomposites were found to have greatly enhanced thermal, mechanical and biological properties. Specifically, the degradation temperatures were improved from 334 °C for RBC to 339 and 344 °C for RBC-ZnO1 and RBC-ZnO2, respectively. The mechanical strength and Young’s modulus of the composites were also higher than those of pure RBC. The greatly improved antibacterial properties of the RBC-ZnO nanocomposites are the most striking feature of the present study. The bacterial growth inhibition measured for the RBC was zero, but reached up to 34 and 41 mm for RBC-ZnO1 and RBC-ZnO2, respectively. In addition to their antibacterial properties, the RBC-ZnO nanocomposites were found to be nontoxic and biocompatible with impressive cell adhesion capabilities. These RBC-ZnO nanocomposites can be used for different biomedical applications and have the potential for use in bioelectroanalysis.  相似文献

The one-step synthesis of water-soluble composites from maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) nanoparticles with a diameter of 12 ± 4 nm and a biocompatible polysaccharide, namely, sodium salt of carboxymethyl cellulose, is described. The role of the polymer matrix consists in stabilization of the resulting nanoparticles by the electrostatic interaction of polymer carboxyl groups with the surface atoms of iron in the (3+) oxidation state. The dissolution of the composites in water affords aggregatively stable dispersions responding to the external magnetic field. The content of the magnetic phase (iron oxide) in the formulation of the maghemite–carboxymethyl cellulose composite is defined by the ratio of components during the synthesis.  相似文献

Flexible nanocellulose composites with silica nanoparticle loading from 5 to 77 wt% and tunable pore size were made and characterised. The pore structure of the new composites can be controlled (100–1000 nm to 10–60 nm) by adjusting the silica nanoparticle content. Composites were prepared by first complexing nanoparticles with a cationic dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate polyacrylamide, followed by retaining this complex in a nanocellulose fibre network. High retention of nanoparticles resulted. The structural changes and pore size distribution of the composites were characterised through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and mercury porosimetry analysis, respectively. The heavily loaded composites formed packed bed structures of nanoparticles. Film thickness was approximately constant for composites with low loading, indicating that nanoparticles filled gaps created by nanocellulose fibres without altering their structure. Film thickness increased drastically for high loading because of the new packed bed structure. Unexpectedly, within the investigated loading range, the level of the tensile index on nanocellulose mass basis remained constant, showing that the silica nanoparticles did not significantly interfere with the bonding between the cellulose nanofibres. This hierarchically engineered material remains flexible at all loadings, and its unique packing enables use in applications requiring nanocellulose composites with controlled pore structure and high surface area.  相似文献

The aim of the presented work is to show the influence of the various polymer matrices and the different amounts of the cellulose filler on the composites properties. Samples based on polypropylene, polystyrene, polyoxymethylene, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, polyester resin, and polylactic acid with different contents of cellulose fibers were prepared by injection molding process. The mechanical and dielectric properties of these composites were studied in order to check whether investigated wood polymer composites fulfill requirements for their application in electrical devices. For all tested composites, a linear increase of modulus with cellulose content was observed. Addition of cellulose to the tested polymers significantly reduces strain at break. In the case of polypropylene and polyoxymethylene composites, the tensile strength increases with the content of the filler. For other materials, there is an inverse relationship, namely the addition of cellulose decreases the tensile strength. The electrical strength decrease was observed with increased cellulose content for the majority of the investigated composites. Polar groups incorporated by cellulose fibers have led to dielectric constant increase. Furthermore, aging of composites in mineral oil and evaluation of water uptake for wood–plastic samples were performed. Wood polymer composites have changed significantly after aging. The water diffusion coefficients were determined, and the significant influence of the amount of cellulose on the water absorption was shown. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Different contents of bonded cellulose were dispersed in a matrix of castor-oil-based polyurethane to produce composites with high susceptibility to fungal attack. We chose to bond the cellulose filler with free diisocyanate, to increase the crosslinking density. Measurements indicated physical and chemical interactions between the polyurethane matrix and cellulose filler. The cellulose network significantly enhanced the interfacial adhesion and thus improved the thermal stability and Young’s modulus of the composites. The influences of the amount of cellulose on the surface chemical structure, surface morphology, and mechanical properties after fungal attack were also investigated. The tensile strength and elongation at break of these composites substantially decreased after exposure to fungus. These composites with high content of renewable raw materials present an optimal balance of physical properties and biodegradability, with potential applications as ecofriendly biomaterials.  相似文献

The article is a critical review of all aspects of the dissolution of cellulose in NaOH-based aqueous solutions: from the background properties of the solvent itself, to the mechanisms of cellulose fibre swelling and dissolution, solution structure and properties and influence of additives and, finally, to the properties of various materials (fibres, films, aerogels, composites and interpenetrated networks) prepared from these solutions. A historical evolution of the research on this topic is presented. The pros and cons of NaOH-based aqueous solvent for cellulose are summarised and some prospects are suggested.  相似文献

Cellulose/silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) composites were prepared and their catalytic performance was evaluated. Porous cellulose microspheres, fabricated from NaOH/thiourea aqueous solution by a sol–gel transition processing, were served as supports for Ag NPs synthesis by an eco-friendly hydrothermal method. The regenerated cellulose microspheres were designed as reducing reagent for hydrothermal reduction and also micro-reactors for controlling growth of Ag NPs. The structure and properties of obtained composite microspheres were characterized by Optical microscopy, UV–visible spectroscopy, WXRD, SEM, TEM and TG. The results indicated that Ag NPs were integrated successfully and dispersed uniformly in the cellulose matrix. Their size (8.3–18.6?nm), size distribution (3.4–7.7?nm), and content (1.1–4.9?wt%) were tunable by tailoring of the initial concentration of AgNO3. Moreover, the shape, integrity and thermal stability were firmly preserved for the obtained composite microspheres. The catalytic performance of the as-prepared cellulose/Ag composite microspheres was examined through a model reaction of 4-nitrophenol reduction in the presence of NaBH4. The composites microspheres exhibited good catalytic activity, which is much high than that of hydrogel/Ag NPs composites and comparable with polymer core–shell particles loading Ag NPs.  相似文献

Composite of highly crystalline fibrous cellulose (CE) and polypropylene (PP) of different molecular weights () was prepared via melting-mixing, maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MAPP) was used as a compatibilizer. And the effects of molecular weight of PP on the properties of the composites were investigated. Through the studying of mechanical properties, dynamic mechanical properties, melting and crystallization behaviors, thermo-oxidative properties, water absorption behaviors, and the morphology of the composites, it was found that PP with higher molecular weight revealed stronger interfacial interaction with cellulose in the composites. Compared with the lower molecular weight, the composites derived from higher molecular weight of PP exhibited stronger tensile strength at the same cellulose content.  相似文献

Xyloglucan and pectin are major non-cellulosic components of most primary plant cell walls. It is believed that xyloglucan and perhaps pectin are functioning as tethers between cellulose microfibrils in the cell walls. In order to understand the role of xyloglucan and pectin in cell wall mechanical properties, model cell wall composites created using Gluconacetobacter xylinus cellulose or cellulose nanowhiskers (CNWs) derived there from with different amounts of xyloglucan and/or pectin have been prepared and measured under extension conditions. Compared with pure CNW films, CNW composites with lower amounts of xyloglucan or pectin did not show significant differences in mechanical behavior. Only when the additives were as high as 60 %, the films exhibited a slightly lower Young’s modulus. However, when cultured with xyloglucan or pectin, the bacterial cellulose (BC) composites produced by G. xylinus showed much lower modulus compared with that of the pure BC films. Xyloglucan was able to further reduce the modulus and extensibility of the film compared to that of pectin. It is proposed that surface coating or tethering of xyloglucan or pectin of cellulose microfibrils does not alone affect the mechanical properties of cell wall materials. The implication from this work is that xyloglucan or pectin alters the mechanical properties of cellulose networks during rather than after the cellulose biosynthesis process, which impacts the nature of the connection between these compounds.  相似文献

In this review, we discuss the application of cellulose nanoparticles as a sustainable and cost-effective source of green stabilizers for formulation of foodstuff. Fibrillar cellulose nanocrystal and nanofibril stabilize Pickering systems because of their ability to adsorb at the oil/water interfaces, forming protective layers. They also form associative structures in the continuous phase, increasing their viscoelastic properties and preventing flocculation. We describe the chemical and structural features of nanocelluloses and discuss the principles that support their utilization as stabilizers, especially in the context of recent prospects in food and health domains, given safety and regulatory advances. In addition, we describe the benefits of combining nanocelluloses with other food ingredients to extend their functional attributes. Particularly, nanocellulose-based Pickering emulsions are used to create edible soft materials with multiple functionalities. This article is expected to stimulate the use of nanocelluloses as functional ingredients to create food products with improved performance and novel properties.  相似文献

Recently, biocomposites have emerged as materials of great interest to the scientists and industry around the globe. Among various polymers, polylactic acid (PLA) is a popular matrix material with high potential for advanced applications. Various particulate materials and nanoparticles have been used as the filler in PLA based matrix. One of the extensively studied filler is cellulose. However, cellulose fibres, due to their hydrophilic nature, are difficult to blend with a hydrophobic polymer matrix. This leads to agglomeration and creates voids, reducing the mechanical strength of the resulting composite. Moreover, the role of the various forms of pure cellulose and its particle shape factors has not been analyzed in most of the current literature. Therefore, in this work, materials of various shapes and shape factors were selected as fillers for the production of polymer composites using Polylactic acid as a matrix to fill this knowledge gap. In particular, pure cellulose fibres (three types with different elongation coefficient) and two mineral nanocomponents: precipitated calcium carbonate and montmorillonite were used. The composites were prepared by a melt blending process using two different levels of fillers: 5% and 30%. Then, the analysis of their thermomechanical and physico-chemical properties was carried out. The obtained results were presented graphically and discussed in terms of their shape and degree of filling.  相似文献

Silver nanoparticles stabilized in a solution of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose with a degree of substitution of 0.85 and a degree of polymerization of 600 have been synthesized. The structuring; physical, chemical, and mechanical properties; and antimicrobial activities of films prepared from sodium carboxymethyl cellulose solutions containing silver nanoparticles have been studied. The shapes, quantities, and sizes of the silver nanoparticles occurring in the sodium carboxymethyl cellulose films were determined with the use of transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and UV spectroscopy. It was found that an increase in the concentration of silver nitrate in sodium carboxymethyl cellulose solutions, as well as photoirradiation of the films, leads to the changes in the sizes and shapes of silver nanoparticles. The shapes, sizes, and quantities of silver nanoparticles determine their biological activity. An increase in the quantity of 5- to 25-nm silver nanoparticles was found to enhance the microbicidal activities of the carboxymethyl cellulose films.  相似文献
