Fully bleached kraft pulp (BKP) and thermomechanical pulp (TMP) fibers were grafted with acrylamide via dielectric-barrier discharge treatment at various treatment dosages. The results indicate that increased dielectric-barrier discharge treatment leads to the increased polymerization and incorporation of acrylamide onto fiber surfaces. Greater incorporation of poly(acrylamide) occurs on the BKP fibers than the TMP at the same treatment conditions. Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) indicate that dielectric-barrier discharge initiated modifications to fiber surface topo-chemistry occur across the fiber such that the sheet is randomly peppered with modified areas; however, it occurs in patches on individual fibers as opposed to occurring as an evenly distributed thin film. SEM and elemental analysis also showed that the incorporation of acrylamide onto the fiber surface increases with increased treatment dosages.  相似文献

We have demonstrated the effect of shear rate on the outer surface morphology of polyethersulfone (PES) hollow fiber ultrafiltration (UF) membranes by an atomic force microscope (AFM). A digital instrument (DI) AFM was used to reveal the surface morphology of hollow fiber membranes prepared with varying shear rates from 1305 to 11,066 s−1. A tapping mode was operated for studying the polymeric membranes when AFM was applied to image the surface of a fiber in air. AFM images of the outer surface have revealed that the nodules in the outer skin appeared to be randomly arranged at low shear rates but formed bands that were aligned in the direction of dope extrusion when the shear rate increased. Both nodule sizes in the fiber spinning and transversal directions decreased with increasing shear rate possibly because of chain disentanglement and thermodynamically favored. This result has not been reported so far. The analysis of AFM images showed that the roughness of the outer surface of hollow fiber UF membranes in terms of Rms, Ra and Rz decreased with an increase in shear rate. The pure water flux of the membranes was nearly proportional to the mean roughness and higher mean roughness resulted in lower separation of membranes. AFM data also imply that there was a certain critical value of shear rate around 3585 s−1, the roughness decreased significantly with an increase in shear rate below 3585 s−1 and almost leveled off or in a much slower pace above this shear rate.  相似文献

Films of immiscible blends of (PS) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) were characterized by contact-angle measurements with sessile drop and atomic force microscopy (AFM). These blends showed a linear dependence of the contact angles on the composition, as predicted by Cassie's equation for ideal surfaces. The surface structure investigated by AFM showed low roughness and phase-separation features. The ratio between the drop radius and the roughness amounted to the order of 104–105. This magnitude seemed to be sufficient to put the PS/PMMA films close to ideality. Upon sulfonation, the wettability and the microscopic surface roughness of the PS/PMMA blends increased. The treatment with sulfuric acid yielded sulfonated PS domains on the surface, causing an increase in the surface wettability. The SO3 groups were evidenced by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The sulfonation of the PS/PMMA blends enables the formation of multiphase surfaces with hydrophobic, charged and polar domains. Received: 11 December 2000 Accepted: 6 April 2001  相似文献

A novel polysiloxane softener bearing N‐cyclohexyl‐γ‐aminopropyl side groups (ASO‐702) is synthesized by copolymerization of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane with N‐cyclohexyl‐γ‐aminopropyl methyldimethoxylsilane and hexamethyldisiloxane. Chemical structure and film morphology of the synthesized polysiloxane are characterized and investigated by IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, SEM and atomic force microscope (AFM). The results of the experiment indicate that ASO‐702 can form a hydrophobic film on both a cotton fiber and a silicon‐wafer surface. At scales > 100 nm, the ASO‐702 shows a relative smooth‐resin film on the treated fabric/fiber surface. But as the observation rule decreases to 2 nm, the molecular scale, the ASO‐702 film exhibits an inhomogeneous structure and uneven morphology in its AFM images. There are many low or high peaks in ASO‐702 topography. Consequently in 2 µm2 scanning field, the root mean square roughness of ASO‐702 film is 0.246 nm, which is 3.05 times rougher as compared with that of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film. Compatibility of natural fiber with hydrophobic matrix is a herculean task in literature works. Surface treatment is a well-known approach for increasing the strength of interfacial adhesion between fibres and polymer matrices. Therefore, this study aims to examine the impact of surface treatment with zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) in improving hydrophobicity of kenaf fiber (KF) to enhance the compatibility between KF and polymer matrix. In this study, KF reinforced unsaturated polyester composites (KF/UPE) were fabricated by the hand lay-up method with varying fiber loadings (wt %) of 10 20, 30, and 40. KF were treated with five different contents of ZnONPs (1% to 5 wt%) to make UPE/KF-ZnONPs composites. The composites were studied in terms of wetting response (contact angle measure and water absorption), mechanical properties, chemical structure (FTIR), crystalline structure (XRD), and surface morphology (SEM, AFM). The investigational findings indicate that the composite samples incorporating ZnONPs exhibit optimum hydrophobicity and mechanical properties, as they possessed a higher contact angle than the untreated KF composite. The optimum content of ZnONPs was found to be 2 wt%. Regarding water absorption, the untreated UPE/KF composites absorbed more water than the treated UPE/KF-ZnONPs composites. SEM images showed changes in the morphology of the KF, while FTIR analysis proved the presence of ZnONPs functional groups in the UPE/KF composites. AFM images revealed that the ZnONPs could actively produce nanolevel roughness, advantageous to the hydrophobic characteristics.  相似文献

Ellipsometry and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were used to study the film thickness and the surface roughness of both ‘soft’ and solid thin films. ‘Soft’ polymer thin films of polystyrene and poly(styrene–ethylene/butylene–styrene) block copolymer were prepared by spin‐coating onto planar silicon wafers. Ellipsometric parameters were fitted by the Cauchy approach using a two‐layer model with planar boundaries between the layers. The smooth surfaces of the prepared polymer films were confirmed by AFM. There is good agreement between AFM and ellipsometry in the 80–130 nm thickness range. Semiconductor surfaces (Si) obtained by anisotropic chemical etching were investigated as an example of a randomly rough surface. To define roughness parameters by ellipsometry, the top rough layers were treated as thin films according to the Bruggeman effective medium approximation (BEMA). Surface roughness values measured by AFM and ellipsometry show the same tendency of increasing roughness with increased etching time, although AFM results depend on the used window size. The combined use of both methods appears to offer the most comprehensive route to quantitative surface roughness characterisation of solid films. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The interface of fibrous composites is a key factor to the whole properties of the composites. In this study, the effects of air dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma discharge power density on surface properties of poly(p‐phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO) fiber and the interfacial adhesion of PBO fiber reinforced poly(phthalazinone ether sulfone ketone) (PPESK) composite were investigated by several characterization methods, including XPS, SEM, signal fiber tensile strength, interlaminar shear strength, and water absorption. After the air DBD plasma treatment at a power density of 41.4 W/cm3, XPS analysis showed that some polar functional groups were introduced on the PBO fiber surface, especially the emergence of a new oxygen‐containing group (?O–C = O group). SEM observations revealed that the air DBD plasma treatment had a great influence on surface morphologies of the PBO fiber, while the signal fiber tensile strength results showed only a small decline of 5.9% for the plasma‐treated fiber. Meanwhile, interlaminar shear strength value of PBO/PPESK composite was increased to 44.71 MPa by 34.5% and water absorption of the composite decreased from 0.46% for the untreated specimen to 0.27%. The results showed that the air DBD plasma treatment can effectively improve the properties of the PBO fiber surface and the PBO/PPESK composite interface. Results obtained from the above analyses also showed that both the fiber surface and the composite interface performance would be reduced when an undue plasma discharge power density was applied. The processes of treatment of actual surface water and model solutions in a low-temperature dielectric-barrier discharge (DBD) plasma were studied. The general evaluation of the efficiency of the plasma treatment procedure for sewage purification was made, and a conclusion on the reasonability of its use in combination with conventional treatment methods was drawn. Schemes of conversion processes for organic compounds upon DBD treatment of surface water were proposed, and the effective rate constants of corresponding reactions were estimated (for phenol, k = 0.46 × 10–5 s–1). It was found that the reaction of oxidation of pollutants in solutions modeling surface runoff occurs in the diffusion region.  相似文献

Oxygen plasma is widely employed for modification of polymer surfaces. Plasma treatment process is a convenient procedure that is also environmentally friendly. This study reports the effects of oxygen plasma treatment on the surface properties of poly(p‐phenylene terephthalamide) (PPTA) fibers. The surface characteristics before and after oxygen plasma treatment were analyzed by XPS, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and dynamic contact angle analysis (DCAA). It was found that oxygen plasma treatment introduced some new polar groups (O? C?O) on the fiber surface, increased the fiber surface roughness and changed the surface morphologies obviously by plasma etching and oxidative reactions. It is also shown that the fiber surface wettability was improved significantly by oxygen plasma treatment. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Aging behavior of poly(p‐phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO) fibers and PBO‐fiber‐reinforced poly(phthalazinone ether sulfone ketone) (PPESK) composites after oxygen plasma treatment was investigated. Surface chemical composition, surface roughness and surface morphologies of oxygen‐plasma‐treated PBO fibers before and after aging in air for 1, 3, 5 and 10 days were analyzed by XPS and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The effects of aging on the material were examined by interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and water absorption measurements. The results indicate that the major aging behavior of the fibers and the composite appeared in the first few days after oxygen plasma treatment, whereas minor aging effects were observed with prolonged aging. Using a staggered contact electrode structure, the conditions for and mechanism of uniform discharge in one-dimensional transverse non-uniform electric field and with aramid fiber (AF) as a dielectric barrier material were explored for the first time in this study. An atmospheric pressure glow discharge (APGD) plasma was generated, and the large-area and continuous processing of AF was achieved. Through the electric field simulation as well as scanning electron microscope and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy tests, it was found that the modification method of pressing the electrode closely to the AF could form the extremely strong electric field region of magnitude 1.444 × 107 V/m under the premise of uniform discharge. The highly active plasma generated could not only effectively increase the surface roughness of the treated material, but also introduce nitrogen functional groups which can’t be introduced through traditional air plasma. As found through the contact angle measurement, the contact angle was greatly decreased (by 52.3%) after being treated with 12.05 W/cm3 of plasma for 10 s, indicating that APGD plasma can achieve a good modification effect and high modification efficiency at low discharge power density.  相似文献

Polyethyleneterephtalate (PET) and polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE) foils were modified by plasma discharge. The effect of plasma modification on polymer surface wettability and on properties of gold coatings were studied as a function of time from plasma exposure (aging time) and polymer substrate temperature. Thickness, sheet resistance, and surface topology of gold layers were studied. Aging of the plasma‐exposed samples is accompanied by increase in contact angle, which is explained by rearrangement of the polymer segments in the polymer surface monolayer, and a decrease in the concentration of polar groups. The aging also leads to a decline in surface roughness Ra measured by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Under deposition conditions, comparable thicknesses of deposited Au layers were prepared on pristine PET and plasma‐treated PET and PTFE samples. The thinnest Au layers were evaporated onto pristine PTFE. The sheet resistance decreases with increasing thickness of Au layer. Plasma treatment leads to an increase of PTFE surface roughness, which becomes even more pronounced after Au deposition. A higher roughness shows that the PET samples are deposited with the Au layer at temperatures above the glassy transition temperature Tg. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

High performance continuous fiber surface modification by inductively coupled RF plasma (ICP) and dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) low temperature plasma were conducted. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and other analytical testing methods systematically studied plasma treatment time, discharge power, discharge pressure, etc, on fiber surface state, surface composition, and surface shape changes in the appearance and wetting properties. The results show that after plasma treatment the surface of the fiber is grafted with a large number of polar functional groups such as carboxyl groups and hydroxyl groups. The surface roughness increases, the surface free energy increases, and the fiber wetting property is significantly improved, resulting in improvement in interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) between the fiber and the resin matrix. Finally, the surfaces of the fibers and its relationship with interfacial properties of fiber reinforced bismaleimide composites are also discussed.  相似文献

Surface properties of lignocellulosic fibers bearing carboxylic groups   总被引:7,自引:1,他引:7
Fibers with various amounts of carboxylic acid functionalities as determined with FTIR and conductometric titration were prepared by chemical modification of high bleached kraft pulp (CP) and chemical thermomechanical pulp (CTMP) with succinic anhydride. The degree of the modification was dependent on reaction time and the type of fiber used. The modification levelled off after 15h of reaction, and this effect was similar for both fiber substrates. The amount of carboxylic acid attached to CTMP, determined by weight gain, was however less than half of the amount of carboxylic moieties introduced to CP fibers at any reaction time. ESCA characterization of the succinylated fibers indicates that the carboxylic acid functionalities are predominantly introduced at the fiber surface. The wettability in water, measured as contact angle, of the succinylated CTMP fibers was significantly improved by the modification, whereas the wettability of CP fibers was slightly decreased. The differences in wettability are caused by the dispersive and polar characteristics of succinic acid attached to the fiber surface and its interaction with the fiber surface. The character of the linkage group in the anhydride used for modification as well as the composition of the cellulose fiber surface are suggested to play a crucial role in the surface energy of the modified fibers and hence their wetting properties.  相似文献

Many studies suggest strong hydrophilicity of plasma treated polyester surfaces. However, no studies have been reported on the influence of plasma on the antibacterial activity of polyethylene terephthalate. First samples were padded with triclosan as antibacterial agent with different concentrations. Second samples were treated by oxygen plasma with different operating frequency and treating time, respectively. Afterwards, plasma treated samples were padded with triclosan in same conditions. The results revealed that the antibacterial activity slighlty increased after treating with triclosan. SEM images and FTIR spectra showed that horizontal channels were brought about on the fiber surface and then better surface roughness and wettability were obtained by plasma. Fibers were fully coated with triclosan after plasma and the antibacterial activity increased with increasing operating frequency and reaction time. Finally, the samples treated with triclosan after plasma gave acceptable results and showed the best antibacterial activity for Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.  相似文献

Vulcanized fluorosilicone rubber for aviation was treated by argon and oxygen cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) in order to modify its hydrophilic properties. The sample's chemical composition was analyzed by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The static contact angle, surface free energy, and adhesion strength were used to indicate the hydrophilic properties. Additionally, the surface morphologies of the specimens were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results showed that the contact angle declined from 101.5° to 22°, and the surface energy rose from 21.3 to 71.2 mJ/m2 after they were treated by argon plasma. Alternatively, the water contact angle decreased to 25.5°, and the surface energy increased to 70.6 mJ/m2 after they were treated by oxygen plasma. In addition, the SEM and AFM images of the samples illustrate that the treated surface of fluorosilicone rubber becomes rougher than the non‐treated surface. The concentrations of carbon (C) and fluorine (F) elements of the material' surface decreased and the contents of O element greatly enriched after plasma treatment. Additionally, chemical group C―O and C―OH appeared after the treatment. However, the hydrophilic effect of the plasma treatment is aged after the specimens were stored for 8–12 h. Dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) technologies have been used to treat a polypropylene film. Various parameters such as treatment speed or electrical power were changed in order to determine the treatment power impact at the polypropylene surface. Indeed, all the treatments were performed using ambient air as gas to oxidize the polypropylene surface. This oxidation level and the surface modifications during the ageing were studied by a wetting method and by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Moreover polypropylene film surface topography was analyzed by atomic force microscopy (AFM) in order to observe the surface roughness modifications. These topographic modifications were correlated to the surface oxidation by measuring with a lateral force microscope (LFM) the surface heterogeneity. The low ageing effects and the surface reorganization are discussed.  相似文献

Polyacrylonitrile fibers were treated with a nitrogen glow-discharge plasma. The surfaces of untreated and treated fibers were examined with contact angle measurements, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Surface energy calculations of the fibers were carried out from contact angle measurements using the relationships developed by Fowkes. It is found that plasma treatment causes a reduction in water contact angle on the fiber surfaces. The dispersion component of surface energy changes slightly, while the polar component is increased significantly from 14.6 mN/m to 58.7 mN/m and the total surface energy increase is 139%. The increase of surface energy is mainly caused by the introduction of hydrophilic groups on the fiber surfaces after plasma treatment.  相似文献

Flax fiber was treated with acetic anhydride or with ethylene plasma to improve adhesion with poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB). The flax fiber surface became hydrophobic by the surface treatments. The ethylene plasma treated flax fiber has better thermal resistance and shows higher interfacial adhesion strength in flax/PHB biocomposite than the chemically modified flax fiber with acetic anhydride. Optimum conditions of the ethylene plasma treatment were found to be 0.5 cm3/sec of the ethylene flow rate and 50 W of the plasma power with 5 min of the treatment time.  相似文献
