A variational inequality approach to generalized two-phase Stefan problem in several space variables

Summary The paper offers a study of a broad class of multidimensional two- phase problems of Stefan type by means of variational inequality techniques. The problems for quasilinear equations of alternatively parabolic or mixed parabolicelliptic type, mixed type nonlinear conditions at the fixed lateral boundary, involving free boundary conditions corresponding to phase transitions of both first (latent heat positive) and second kind (latent heat equal to zero) are taken into consideration. Results concerning existence of weak solutions, their uniqueness and stability are established.The preparation of the paper was partially carried out while the author's visiting Istituto di Analisi Numerica del C.N.R., Pavia, due to support of the C.N.R.     

Su un problema di frontiera libera connesso a questioni di idraulica

Sunto Si dimostra esistenza e unicità della soluzione di un problema di frontiera libera che traduce il moto di filtrazione di liquidi attraverso mezzi porosi. Il problema è ricondotto alla minimizzazione di un funzionale quadratico su un convesso chiuso di uno spazio di Hilbert, il che fornisce anche dei procedimenti per l'approssimazione numerica del problema stesso. Some results about the pseudospectral approximation of one-dimensional fourth-order problems

Summary We analyze the pseudospectral approximation of fourth order problems. We give convergence results in the one dimensional case. Numerical experiments are shown in two dimensions for the approximation of the rhombic plate bending problem. On a differential problem coming from cell biology

Summary An initial and boundary value problem for a system of first order linear partial differential equations is studied. This problem arises in cell biology, when the evolution of a homogeneous cell population is modelled. Some existence, uniqueness and regularity results are proven; an estimate for the growth of the cell population is also obtained.This work was in part supported by the Istituto di Analisi Numerica of the C.N.R. in Pavia (Italy), the G.N.A.F.A. of the C.N.R. On a class of singular nonlinear parabolic variational inequalities

Summary We study a class of singular or degenerate parabolic variational inequalities, containing some nonlinear operators. We prove an existence and uniqueness result for weak solutions, in the framework of suitable Banach weighted spaces.

On nonstationary flow through porous media

Summary Saturated-unsaturated flow of an incompressible fluid through a porous medium is considered in the case of time-dependent water levels. This corresponds to coupling the mass conservation law with a continuous constitutive condition between water content and pressure. An existence result for the corresponding weak formulation is proved. A filtration problem in a porous medium with variable permeability

Sunto Un problema di frontiera libera (moto di un fluido attraverso una diga in terra non omogenea) è ricondotto allo studio di una disequazione variazionale. Si danno condizioni sul coefficiente di permeabilità sufficienti ad assicurare che la parte bagnata della diga è un sottografico.

Su di un nuovo problema del tipo di Stefan

Summary We study a problem of Stefan in a semi-infinite, homogeneous, thermically isotropic medium, whose initial temperature is position indipendent. Our semi-infinite medium is initially in a well defined state and its surface is maintained at a constant temperature. It is remarkable that an hypothesis is made, which is new in connection with Stefan problems: we suppose in fact the change of state temperature is a function of the position at which the change happens. Finally we study the asymptotic behaviour for t → ∞ of the solution of our problem.

A mathematical study of the plasticity effects in muscle contraction

Hill's three-element model of contracting muscle is expanded by replacing the series and the parallel elastic elements with elastoplastic elements. The contractile element is structurally described making use of the sliding filament theory. The resulting mathematical model is formulated in terms of an evolution variational inequality for a nonlinear and nonlocal transport-type operator. The existence and uniqueness of the solution are described along with a numerical approach.This work was supported by M.P.I. (fondi per la ricerca scientifica) and by I.A.N. of C.N.R. Pavia.     

Nonlinear evolution inclusions arising from phase change models

The paper is devoted to the analysis of an abstract evolution inclusion with a non-invertible operator, motivated by problems arising in nonlocal phase separation modeling. Existence, uniqueness, and long-time behaviour of the solution to the related Cauchy problem are discussed in detail. The Italian authors would like to point out financial support from theMIUR-COFIN 2002 research program on “Free boundary problems in applied sciences”. Degeneration of a compound plate system to a membrane-plate system: A singularly perturbed transmission problem

Summary Asymptotic expansions are constructed for solutions of some singularly perturbed transmission problems arising in engineering mechanics. The physical problem is that of a plate under tension which consists of two materials, with one material of small flexural rigidity, , surrounded by the other. The problems of deflection due to lateral loading and natural frequencies of vibration are solved for small positive . The limit probelm, =0, is a membrane-plate system under tension.This research was initiated during a visit to Laboratorio di Analisi Numerica del C.N.R., Università di Pavia, and has been partially supported by NSF Grant 02 MCS-7902663.     

Sulla propagazione ondosa in un sistema viscoelastico lineare in presenza di forze di massa

Riassunto Si studia la propagazione ondosa che si determina in un sistema viscoelastico lineare sotto l'azione di assegnate forze di massa e per effetto di prefissate condizioni al contorno. Mediante l'analisi asintotica di una particolare serie di Neumann che interviene nella soluzione, si dimostrapoi l'esistenza di una regione di ?strato limite? pert→∞, in corrispondenza di tempi di rilassamento molto ?piccoli?.

Summary We study the wave propagation which takes place in a linear-viscoelastic model under the action of prefixed mass forces and of boundary data. The solution of this problem is expressed by means of a particular Neumaun's series. The asymptotic analysis of it shows the existence of a boundary-layer region fort→∞ when very ?small? characteristic relaxation times occur.

On equiwellset minimum problems

A sequence of minimum problems given on a metric space, together with a limit problem, is called equiwellset if every problem has exactly one solution, if the values converge, and if any asymptotically minimizing sequence converges to the solution of the limit problem. When all problems are equal we get the classical definition of Tyhonov. A metric characterization of equiwellposedness is given that generalizes results of Vainberg for a single problem. Differential characterizations are also obtained extending a result of Asplund-Rockafellar. Applications are given to the epsilon method and to the perturbations of the linear quadratic problem.Work partially supported by Laboratorio di Matematica Applicata del C.N.R. presso l'Università di Genova.     

Sul problema di Dirichlet nel semispazio

Sunto Si sludiano alcune classi di spazi di distribuzioni del tipo di Sobolev nel semi spazio; nell'ambito di tali spazi si danno dei teoremi di esistenza e di unicità della soluzione del problema di Dirichlet non omogeneo per operatori differenziali lineari ellittici. Summary We show that the Cauchy-Dirichlet problem for a class of parabolic systems with measurable coefficients admits a unique solution. We show, also, regularity's properties for the solution.
