We designed efficient precursors that combine complementary associative groups with exceptional binding affinities and thiocarbonylthio moieties enabling precise RAFT polymerization. Well defined PS and PMMA supramolecular polymers with molecular weights up to 30 kg mol?1 are synthesized and shown to form highly stable supramolecular diblock copolymers (BCPs) when mixed, in non‐polar solvents or in the bulk. Hierarchical self‐assembly of such supramolecular BCPs by thermal annealing affords morphologies with excellent lateral order, comparable to features expected from covalent diblock copolymer analogues. Simple washing of the resulting materials with protic solvents disrupts the supramolecular association and selectively dissolves one polymer, affording a straightforward process for preparing well‐ordered nanoporous materials without resorting to crosslinking or invasive chemical degradations.  相似文献

In this work, novel star‐hyperbranched block copolymers containing four polystyrene arms and hyperbranched polyglycidol at the end of each arm (sPS‐b‐HPG) have been synthesized. The polystyrene arms were prepared through atom transfer radical polymerization of styrene starting from a four‐arm initiator. The hydroxyl‐terminated PS star polymers served as precursors for the cationic ring‐opening polymerization of glycidol using BF3·OEt2 as the catalyst. The chemical structures of these block copolymers were characterized by using 1H and 13C NMR. DSC analysis indicated that the star‐hyperbranched block copolymers exhibited two distinct glass transition temperatures corresponding to the linear PS and the HPG segments, respectively. The addition of LiClO4 increased the Tg of HPG segments at low concentrations, however, decreased the Tg at high concentrations. The Tg of PS segments was not affected by the addition of salts at all. Furthermore, the interaction of sPS‐b‐HPG with LiBr was studied by using viscosity analysis based on the Jones–Dole equation. The star‐like PS core strengthened the interaction of sPS‐b‐HPG with Li ions that could facile the inhomogeneous distribution of Li cations and anions in different phases, which is important in polymeric electrolytes for lithium chemical power sources. The ionic conductivity of one sPS‐b‐HPG/LiClO4 electrolyte was measured to be higher than that of HPG/LiClO4 electrolyte. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of polyacrylate‐polystyrene‐polyisobutylene‐polystyrene‐polyacrylate (X‐PS‐PIB‐PS‐X) pentablock terpolymers (X=poly(methyl acrylate) (PMA), poly(butyl acrylate) (PBA), or poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)) was prepared from poly (styrene‐b‐isobutylene‐b‐styrene) (PS‐PIB‐PS) block copolymers (BCPs) using either a Cu(I)Cl/1,1,4,7,7‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) or Cu(I)Cl/tris[2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl]amine (Me6TREN) catalyst system. The PS‐PIB‐PS BCPs were prepared by quasiliving carbocationic polymerization of isobutylene using a difunctional initiator, followed by the sequential addition of styrene, and were used as macroinitiators for the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl acrylate (MA), n‐butyl acrylate (BA), or methyl methacrylate (MMA). The ATRP of MA and BA proceeded in a controlled fashion using either a Cu(I)Cl/PMDETA or Cu(I)Cl/Me6TREN catalyst system, as evidenced by a linear increase in molecular weight with conversion and low PDIs. The polymerization of MMA was less controlled. 1H‐NMR spectroscopy was used to elucidate pentablock copolymer structure and composition. The thermal stabilities of the pentablock copolymers were slightly less than the PS‐PIB‐PS macroinitiators due to the presence of polyacrylate or polymethacrylate outer block segments. DSC analysis of the pentablock copolymers showed a plurality of glass transition temperatures, indicating a phase separated material.  相似文献

Newly designed star‐shaped block copolymers made of poly(?‐caprolactone) (PCL) and polystyrene (PS) were synthesized by combining ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of ?‐caprolactone (CL) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of styrene (St). The switch from the first to the second mechanism was obtained by selective transformation of “living” radical sites. First, tri‐ and tetrafunctional initiators were used as an initiator for the “living” ring opening polymerization (ROP) of ?‐caprolactone producing a hydroxyl terminated three or four arm star‐shaped polymer. Next, the OH end groups of PCL star branches were derivatized into 2‐bromoisobutyrate groups which gave rise to the corresponding tri‐ and tetrabromoester ended‐PCL stars; the latter served as macroinitiators for the ATRP of styrene at 110°C in the presence of CuBr/2,2‐bipyridine (Bipy) catalyst system affording star‐shaped block copolymers PCLn‐b‐PSn (n=3 or 4). The samples obtained were characterizated by 1H‐NMR spectroscopy and GPC (gel permeation chromatograph). These copolymers exhibited the expected structure. The crystallization of star‐shaped block copolymers was studied by DSC (differential scanning calorimetry). The results show that when the content of the PS block increased, the Tm of the star‐shaped block copolymer decreased.  相似文献

ω‐Telechelic poly(p‐phenylene vinylene) species (PPVs) are prepared by living ring‐opening metathesis polymerization of a [2.2]paracyclophane‐1,9‐diene in the presence of Hoveyda–Grubbs 2nd generation initiator, with terminating agents based on N1,N3‐bis(6‐butyramidopyridin‐2‐yl)‐5‐hydroxyisophthalamide (Hamilton wedge), cyanuric acid, PdII–SCS‐pincer, or pyridine moieties installing the supramolecular motifs. The resultant telechelic polymers are self‐assembled into supramolecular block copolymers (BCPs) via metal coordination or hydrogen bonding and analyzed by 1H NMR spectroscopy. The optical properties are examined, whereby individual PPVs exhibit similar properties regardless of the nature of the end group. Upon self‐assembly, different behaviors emerge: the hydrogen‐bonding BCP behaves similarly to the parent PPVs whereas the metallosupramolecular BCP demonstrates a hypsochromic shift and a more intense emission owing to the suppression of aggregation. These results demonstrate that directional self‐assembly can be a facile method to construct BCPs with semiconducting networks, while combating solubility and aggregation.  相似文献

Main‐chain imidazolium‐functionalized amphiphilic block copolymers (PIL‐b‐PS) consisting of polyionic liquid (PIL) and polystyrene (PS) blocks have been first synthesized by condensation polymerization combined with nitroxide‐mediated free radical polymerization (NMP). The di‐functional imidazolium‐based ionic liquid (IL) having both hydroxyl and ester end groups was synthesized through Michael addition between imidazole and methylacrylate (MA) and further quaternization by 2‐chloroethanol. The HTEMPO (4‐hydroxy‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl‐1‐piperidinyloxy) terminated polyionic liquid (HTEMPO‐PIL) as the hydrophilic block was prepared by condensation polymerization of di‐functional imidazolium IL and HTEMPO at a certain ratio. The hydrophobic PS block was synthesized by controlled radical polymerization of styrene using HTEMPO‐PIL through NMP, resulting PIL‐b‐PS block copolymers. The structure of block copolymers obtained has been characterized and verified by FTIR, 1H NMR, and size exclusion chromatography analyses. In addition, the morphology and size of the micelles formed by PIL‐b‐PS block copolymers in water were investigated by transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Grignard Metathesis polymerization (GRIM) for the synthesis of regioregular poly(3‐alkylthiophenes) proceeds via a “living” chain growth mechanism. Due to the “living” nature of this polymerization regioregular poly(3‐alkylthiophenes) with predetermined molecular weight, narrow molecular weight distributions and desired chain end functionality are now readily available. Allyl terminated poly(3‐hexylthiophene) was successfully used as a precursor for the synthesis of di‐block copolymers containing polystyrene. The addition of “living” poly(styryl)lithium to the allyl terminated regioregular poly(3‐hexylthiophene) generated the di‐block copolymer. Poly(3‐hexylthiophene)‐b‐polystyrene was also synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization. Integration of poly(3‐hexylthiophene) in di‐block copolymers with polystyrene leads to the formation of nanowire morphology and self‐ordered conducting nanostructured materials.  相似文献

Supramolecular assembly through complementary interaction between molecular subgroups belonging to phase‐separating polymer species offers a great opportunity, not only for constructing nanoscale soft templates reminiscent of conventional block copolymer morphologies, but also for tailoring surface properties by facile removal of one of the structure components by cleaving complementary interactions. Herein we report the fabrication of a novel, organic, nanoporous film through supramolecular assembly of two complementarily, end‐interacting, mono‐end‐functionalized polymers under solvent annealing. The film of end‐functionalized polymer blends under solvent annealing yielded phase‐separated nanodomains that resemble nanoscopically ordered structures of block copolymers, but that are more advantageous due to easily cleavable and exchangeable links between the phase‐separated domains. The removal of one of the components of the precursor structure formed from the end‐functionalized polymers through cleavage of complementary interactions allowed us to fabricate mono‐ or multilayered nanoporous structures in which the chemically useful end‐functionalities of the remnant polymers are rich on the surface of the pores. The resultant, organic, nanoporous films with tailored surface functionality offer a useful platform for various chemical and biological applications.  相似文献

Several synthetic strategies for the incorporation of supramolecular binding units into polymers are described. Specifically, terpyridine ligands have been introduced into polymers in such a way that they are distributed either randomly throughout the polymer backbone or at the chain end(s). Two terpyridine ligands form octahedral complexes with a variety of transition‐metal ions, each having different properties. Some general statements regarding metal complex stability are presented as well as a special case representing the selective construction of heteroleptic terpyridine complexes. This leads to a kind of LEGO system for connecting and disconnecting the polymer blocks via metal complexes. Metallo‐supramolecular block copolymers, graft copolymers, and chain‐extended polymers can be designed and prepared with the principles described. Once the design parameters have been derived, thorough control over the final material and its properties can be gained. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We have demonstrated the preparation of a series of photoaddressable supramolecular block copolymers by mixing a carboxy‐terminated azobenzene derivative, 6‐[4‐(4′‐cyanophenylazo)phenyloxy]hexanoic acid (AZO), and two polystyrene‐b‐poly(4‐vinylpiridine) (PS‐b‐P4VP) block copolymers. AZO can be selectively attached to the P4VP block of PS‐b‐P4VP through hydrogen bonding interactions. The assembly of AZO with vinylpyridine group‐containing polymers was initially investigated on a model system composed of P4VP homopolymer and AZO. Homogeneous liquid crystalline materials were obtained for ratios of AZO to vinylpyridine repeating unit, x, lower or equal to 0.50. Mixtures with higher x resulted in heterogeneous materials showing clear macrophase separation. Accordingly, a series of hydrogen‐bonded complexes of PS‐b‐P4VP and AZO, PS‐b‐P4VP(AZO)x, with x = 0.25 and x = 0.50 were prepared. Lamellar and spherical morphologies were observed for the complexes based on PS24‐b‐P4VP9.5 (Mn,PS = 24,000, Mn,P4VP = 9500) and PS24‐b‐P4VP1.9 (Mn,PS = 24,000, Mn,P4VP = 1900), respectively. Photoinduced orientation of the azobenzene units was obtained in films of P4VP(AZO)x and PS‐b‐P4VP(AZO)x with x = 0.25 and 0.50 by using 488 nm linearly polarized light and characterized through birefringence and dichroism measurements. This investigation shows a versatile and less laborious approach to azobenzene‐containing polymer materials with low chromophore content, of interest in optical application. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Three new ureidopyrimidinone(UPy)‐functionalized chain‐transfer agents (CTAs) have been synthesized for use in reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. These UPy‐CTAs are able to polymerize a wide variety of vinyl monomers to yield UPy‐functionalized polymers, including homopolymers, block copolymers, and amphiphilic block copolymers. These polymers have been characterized via 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), UV/visible spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to demonstrate end‐group fidelity. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Summary: The preparation of polystyrene block methyl methacrylate copolymers (PS-b-PMMA) is described. The polystyrene segment was prepared by anionic polymerization and the methylmethacrylate segment was prepared via free radical autoxidation of a borane agent attached to the styrene chain. 1 The chemistry involves a transformation of the anionic polymerization process to borane chemistry by firstly producing polystyrene with chain end unsaturated alkyl functional groups prepared using a n-butyllithium initiator and termination with allylchlorodimethylsilane. Secondly, the unsaturated macroinitiator end was hydroborated by 9-borabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane (9-BBN) to produce a borane terminated PS. Thirdly, the borane group at the chain end was selectively oxidized and converted to polymeric radicals in the presence of methyl methacrylate which then initiated radical polymerization to produce block copolymers. The polymer obtained was characterized using several chromatographic techniques including LC-CC (liquid chromatography under critical conditions) for the polystyrene segments and two-dimensional chromatography with LC-CC in the first dimension and SEC in the second. The results show that block formation was successful although significant homopolymerization of methyl methacrylate is also obtained.  相似文献

A series of diblock‐copolymers were synthesized through anionic polymerization of styrene and tert‐butyl methacrylate (tBuA) with different monomer ratios, and analogous block‐copolymeric derivatives (PS‐b‐PAA)s with monofunctional carboxylic acid groups were obtained by further hydrolyzation as hydrogen‐bonded (H‐bonded) proton donors. Via H‐bonded interaction, these diblock‐coplymeric donors (PS‐b‐PAA)s were incorporated with luminescent mono‐pyridyl/bis‐pyridyl acceptors to form single/double H‐bonded supramolecules, that is, H‐bonded side‐chain/cross‐linking copolymers, respectively. The supramolecular architectures formed by donor polymers and light‐emitting acceptors were influenced by the ratio of acid blocks in the diblock copolymeric donors and the type of single/double H‐bonded light‐emitting acceptors. Their thermal and luminescent properties can be adjusted by H‐bonds, and more than 100 nm of red‐shifted photoluminescence (PL) emissions were observed, which depend on the degrees of the H‐bonding interactions. Self‐assembled phenomena of amphiphilic dibolck copolymers and their H‐bonded complexes were confirmed by TEM micrographs, and supramolecular microphase separation of spherical micelle‐like morphology was demonstrated to affect the photophysical properties. Polymer light‐emitting diode (PLED) devices containing H‐bonded complexes showed electroluminescence (EL) emissions of 503–560 nm under turn‐on voltages of 7.5–9.0 V, maximum power efficiencies of 0.23–0.37 cd/A (at 100 mA/cm2), and maximum luminances of 318–519 cd/m2 (around 25 V). © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The crystallization of block copolymers (BCPs) under homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation is currently well understood revealing the strong interplay of crystallization in competition to microphase separation. This article reports investigations on synthesis and crystallization processes in weakly interacting supramolecular pseudo‐BCPs, composed of poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) and poly(isobutylene) (PIB) blocks, connected by a specifically interacting hydrogen bond (thymine/2,6‐diaminotriazine). Starting from ring opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone, the use of “click”‐chemistry enabled the introduction of thymine endgroups onto PCL polymer, thus generating the fully thymine‐substituted pure PCLs ( 1a , 1b ) as judged via NMR and MALDI analysis. Physical mixing of 1a , 1b with a bivalent, bis(2,6‐diaminotriazine)‐containing molecule ( 2 ) generated the bivalent polymers BC1 and BC2 , whereas mixing of 1a or 1b with the 2,6‐diaminotriazine‐substituted PIB ( 3 ) generated the supramolecular pseudo‐BCPs BC3 and BC4 . Thermal investigations (DSC, Avrami analysis) revealed only minor changes in the crystallization behavior of BC1 – BC4 with Avrami exponents close to three, indicative of a confluence of the growing crystals during the crystallization process. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two types of multiarm star block copolymers: (polystyrene)m‐poly(divinylbenzene)‐poly(methyl methacrylate)n, (PS)m‐polyDVB‐(PMMA)n and (polystyrene)m‐poly(divinylbenzene)‐poly(tert‐butyl acrylate)k, (PS)m‐polyDVB‐(PtBA)k were successfully prepared via a combination of cross‐linking and Diels–Alder click reactions based on “arm‐first” methodology. For this purpose, multiarm star polymer with anthracene functionality as reactive periphery groups was prepared by a cross‐linking reaction of divinyl benzene using α‐anthracene end functionalized polystyrene (PS‐Anth) as a macroinitiator. Thus, obtained multiarm star polymer was then reacted with furan protected maleimide‐end functionalized polymers: PMMA‐MI or PtBA‐MI at reflux temperature of toluene for 48 h resulting in the corresponding multiarm star block copolymers via Diels–Alder click reaction. The multiarm star and multiarm star block copolymers were characterized by using 1H NMR, SEC, Viscotek triple detection SEC (TD‐SEC) and UV. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Multicomponent supramolecular block copolymers (BCPs) have attracted much attention due to their potential functionalities, but examples of three-component supramolecular BCPs are rare. Herein, we report the synthesis of three-component multiblock 1D supramolecular copolymers of Ir(III) complexes 1 – 3 by a sequential seeded supramolecular polymerization approach. Precise control over the kinetically trapped species via the pathway complexity of the monomers is the key to the successful synthesis of BCPs with up to 9 blocks. Furthermore, 5-block BCPs with different sequences could be synthesized by changing the addition order of the kinetic species during a sequentially seeded process. The corresponding heterogeneous nucleation-elongation process has been confirmed by the UV/Vis absorption spectra, and each segment of the multiblock copolymers could be characterized by both TEM and SEM. Interestingly, the energy transfer leads to weakened emission of 1 -terminated and enhanced emission of 3 -terminated BCPs. This study will be an important step in advancing the synthesis and properties of three-component BCPs.  相似文献

Copolymers of 2‐ethylhexyl acrylate (EHA) and cholesteryloxycarbonyl‐2‐hydroxymethacrylate (CEM) were prepared by reversible addition–fragmentation chain‐transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Supramolecular complexes of these copolymers with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were soluble in THF, toluene, and isooctane. The colloidal solutions remained stable for months without aggregation. The rationale for the choice of CEM was based on the high adsorption energy of cholesterol on the CNT surface, as computed by DFT calculations. Adsorption isotherms were experimentally measured for copolymers of various architectures (statistical, diblock, and star copolymers), thereby demonstrating that 2–5 cholesterol groups were adsorbed per polymer chain. Once the supramolecular complex had dried, the CNTs could be easily resolubilized in isooctane without the need for high‐power sonication and in the absence of added polymer. Analysis by atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) indicated that the CNTs were devoid of bundles. The supramolecular complexes could also be employed in an inverse emulsion polymerization of 2‐hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA) in isooctane and dodecane, thereby leading to the formation of a continuous polymeric sheath around the CNTs. Thus, this technique leads to the formation of very stable dispersions in non‐polar organic solvents, without altering the fundamental properties of the CNTs.  相似文献

A series of well‐defined θ‐shaped copolymers composed of polystyrene (PS) and poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) with controlled molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution have been successfully synthesized without any purification procedure by the combination of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), ring‐opening polymerization (ROP), and the “click” chemistry. The synthetic process involves two steps: (1) synthesis of AB2 miktoarm star copolymers, which contain one PCL chain terminated with two acetylene groups and two PS chains with two azido groups at their one end, (α,α′‐diacetylene‐PCL) (ω‐azido‐PS)2, by ROP, ATRP, and the terminal group transformation; (2) intramolecular cyclization of AB2 miktoarm star copolymers to produce well‐defined pure θ‐shaped copolymers using “click” chemistry under high dilution. The 1H NMR, FTIR, and gel permeation chromatography techniques were applied to characterize the chemical structures of the resultant intermediates and the target polymers. Their thermal behavior was investigated by DSC. The mobility decrease of PCL chain across PS ring in the theta‐shaped copolymers restricts the crystallization ability of PCL segment. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel route to synthesize catenated macrocyclic PS–PMMA block copolymers is demonstrated via combination of supramolecular chemistry and controlled radical polymerization (CRP). Polymerization of styrene with bromopropionate ester initiator coupled with phenanthroline Cu(I) complex affords a four arm PS macroinitiator, which upon further chain extension by polymerization of MMA generates a four arm PS–PMMA block copolymer. Intramolecular coupling of PS–PMMA–Br arms via low temperature styrene‐assisted atom transfer radical coupling (ATRC) leads to the formation of PS–PMMA catenand, which generates the metal‐free catenated macrocyclic PS–PMMA block copolymer after removal of Cu metal. The interlocked structures of catenated block copolymers are confirmed by GPC, NMR, and AFM image analysis.  相似文献

We report a single‐chain magnet (SCM) made of a terbium(III) building block and a nitronyl‐nitroxide radical (NIT) functionalized with an aliphatic chain. This substitution is targeted to induce a long‐range distortion of the polymeric chain and accordingly it gives rise to chains that are curled with almost 20 nm helical pitch. They self‐organize as a chiral tubular superstructure made of 11 chains wound around each other. The supramolecular tubes have a 4.5 nm internal diameter. Overall, this forms a porous chiral network with almost 44 % porosity. Ab initio calculations highlight that each TbIII ion possesses high magnetic anisotropy. Indeed, notwithstanding the supramolecular arrangement each chain behaves as a SCM. Magnetic relaxation with both finite and infinite‐size regimes is observed and confirms the validity of the Ising approximation. This is associated with quite strong coercive field and magnetic remanence (Hc=2400 Oe MR=2.09 μB at 0.5 K) for this class of compounds.  相似文献
