Abstract

2-Thioxo—3-allyl-4-thiazolidinone 1a reacts with Lawesson's reagent (LR, 2) to give the ethylenic product 5 through a coupling reaction along with the dithioxo compound 6. Coupling reaction products of types 8 and 9 are also produced upon reacting thiazolidinones 1 and with the appropriate tris(diallkylamino) phosphine reagent (3 a,b). Reaction of the thiazolidinone 1a with the ylidenetriphenylphosphorane reagents 4 a–c proceeds according to the Wittig mechanism yielding ethylenes 10a–c, respectively. Structural elucidations for the new products were based upon compatible analytical and spectroscopic measurements as well a confirmatory single crystal X-ray structure for 5.

Abstract

It was a textile industrialist's bequest that helped establish the Department of Chemical Technology at Bombay University in 1934, and there has been sustained and systematic use of the department's resources by industry ever since. Among other noteworthy features, the report of the university's academic council recommending the establishment of the department made a categorical distinction between technical education, designed to create skilled foremen, and technological education, oriented towards establishing a mode of thinking amongst future technologists. The paper's principal thesis is that the presence of the textile industry in Bombay allowed the funds for the establishment of the department to be made available. It also ensured a concentration of the curriculum and syllabus, in what was conceived to be an institution of technology in general, on the area of enquiry most relevant to the textile industry, textile chemistry. This effectively converted the department into an institution specialising in textile chemistry, later broadened into chemical technology.  相似文献

Abstract

A series of 12-aryl-8,9,10,12-tetrahydrobenzo[a]xanthene-11-thiones were synthesized by the reaction of substituted 12-aryl-8,9,10,12-tetrahydrobenzo[a]xanthene-11-ones with Lawesson's Reagent in toluene under standard reaction conditions. All synthesized compounds were characterized by IR, NMR (1H and 13C), and mass spectra. Moreover, 2D-NMR (HOMOCOSY, HSQC, and HMBC) studies were also performed for compound 10b. The synthesized compounds were also screened for their antibacterial activities.

Abstract

In 1672, a laboratory was founded by the Society of Apothecaries at its premises in Blackfriars, London, to manufacture chemical medicines. By exploring the society's motivations for constructing a laboratory and its development during the eighteenth century, this paper examines the roles that chemistry played within the activities of the institution. While the chemistry's primary utility was in drug manufacturing for the society's pharmaceutical trade, through its laboratory, the society used chemistry to develop its corporate and educational aims, thus helping to secure its institutional authority in London's medical marketplace.  相似文献

The synthesis and liquid crystalline properties of new Schiff 's bases (series 3a-f) and azo compounds (4a-f) incorporating pyridine and 1,3,4-thiadiazole rings are reported. The first homologues in the series of Schiff's bases (3a-c) show a monotropic mesophase and the homologues 3d-f display an enantiotropic SmA phase. The only azo compounds to exhibit liquid crystalline properties are the homologues 4e, f which show a monotropic nematic phase. These series are compared with Schiff's bases and azo compounds analogues (series 5 and 6), previously reported by us and an AM1 study of the structure/mesomorphic property relationship is described.  相似文献

The synthesis and liquid crystalline properties of novel achiral amides (Ia–g, IIa–g and IVa,b), achiral Schiff's bases (IIIa–g and Va–g), chiral amides (VI, VII) and chiral Schiff's bases (VIII–XI) incorporating a 1,3,4-oxadiazole ring are reported. All amides of the series I and II display an enantiotropic smectic A phase. The amide IVa,b did not show mesomorphic properties. Amides of the series Ia–g and IIa–g contain a flexible n-tetradecylthio chain, the other terminal substituent is an n-alkoxy chain and n-alkyl chain, respectively (n?=?4–10) and the 1,3,4-oxadiazole is in the terminal rigid core. Amides Ia–g have broader mesomorphic range and higher thermal stability than the corresponding amides IIa–g. Amides IVa,d contain the 1,3,4-oxadiazole ring in the centre of the rigid core and two flexible alkoxy chains as flexible terminal substituents. Thus, the mesomorphic properties are favoured if 1,3,4-oxadiazole is shifted to a terminal position of the rigid core. Schiff's bases IIIa–g display an enantiotropic dimorphism smectic C–smectic A. Schiff's bases IIIa–g have a broader mesomorphic range than the analogous amides Ia–g. Schiff's bases Va–g exhibit a dimorphism smectic A–nematic, and in contrast to this the analogous amide IVa,b did not show mesomorphism. The chiral amides VI and VII and chiral Schiff's bases X and XI did not show mesomorphic properties and only the chiral Schiff's bases VIII and IX display a chiral smectic C phase in a short mesomorphic range. A density functional theory theoretical study at the B3LYP/6–311++G(d,p) level was performed in order to analyse the structural features that must be related with the mesomorphic behaviour of the reported compounds.  相似文献

Johann Kunckel's Ars Vitraria Experimentalis (1679) is arguably the most important text on seventeenth-century glassmaking. As an augmented German translation of Italian (1612) and English (1662) editions, Kunckel presented a complex and layered text that contained a plethora of recipes, elaborate commentaries and annotations, and various appendices dealing with glass-related technologies and arts. We reworked four recipes for rosichiero glass (a transparent red glass) in Kunckel's book to discover what strategies Kunckel employed to help readers engage with the recipes and to make the recipes work in the specificity of their own workshop. We learned that Kunckel regularly neglected to test the Italian recipes, and that not all of his corrections are improvements, thereby specifying our understanding of the “codification of error” as a strategy to write down colour-making knowledge. Instead, Kunckel made the choice to educate his readers on the very mechanisms of glass colouring to allow them to intervene to influence the colour of the glass and to gain further control over the making process. He argued that the colour of glass is sensitive to the manner in which ingredients are sourced and processed, and emphasised the importance of furnace management in optimising the colour of glass.  相似文献

3-Methyl-2-benzothiazolinone hydrazone (1) reacts with dialkyl phosphorothiochloridates 2a,b in the presence of a base, to give the respective dialkylthiophosphorylated hydrazones 3a,b. Upon thermolysis, compound 3b yields bi(3-methylbenzothiazole-2-iminyl) (4). Exposure of 3b to sunlight in methanol results in the formation of 3-methyl-2-benzothiazolinone (5). When the same experiment was carried on the starting hydrazone 1, bis(3-methyl- benzothiazole-2-iminyl)diazine (6) was formed. Elemental analyses and spectroscopic details are presented for the new compounds.

ABSTRACT

Poly(ester-anhydride)s, PEA's, built up by 50 mol% ester and 50 mol% anhydride groups were prepared by polycondensation of 0,0′-bistrimethylsilyl 4-hydroxybenzoic acid and various α,ω- alkane-dicarbonylchlorides. The polycondensations were conducted either in bulk or in 1-chloronaphthalene. High yields (up to 94%) were obtained under both reaction conditions, but the higher inherent viscosities resulted from polycondensations in 1- chloronaphthalene. IR- and 13C NMR spectroscopy revealed that reaction temperatures above 200°C cause side reactions such as transacylation and transesterification. Analogous series of polycondensations were conducted with 0,0′-bistrimethylsilyl vanillic acid. The resulting PEA's were amorphous, whereas the PEA's derived from 4-hydroxybenzoic acid are semicrystalline.  相似文献

Abstract

Condensing tartaric acid (R, R) and PCl3, we obtained oligomers 3 and cyclic dimer 4. Oxidizing these compounds by DMSO, we prepared hydroxyphosphoranes 6–9, while reaction of orthoquinones gave six-coordinated compound 10. Compound 4 reacts with triethylamine leading to an equilibrium between phosphoranide 5 and phosphite 5'. The more likely structure of oligomers is a sequence of TBP arranged on a helix, whereas dimers should have an emetic structure with pentacoordinated phosphorus atoms. These results are supported by nmr analysis, molecular weight and elemental analysis. All these compounds have strong optical activity. On the other hand, condensing PCl3 and malic or citric acids, we synthetized new functionalized spirophosphorans 2.

En condensant l'acide tartrique (R, R) et PCl3, nous avons obtenu des oligomères 3 et le dimére cyclique 4. En oxydant ces composés par le DMSO, nous avons préparé les hydroxyphosphoranes 6–9, tandis que la réaction des orthoquinones a donné le composé a phosphore hexacoordiné 10. Le composé 4 réagit sur la triéthylamine, conduisant à un équilibre entre le phosphoranure 5 et le phosphite 5'. La structure la plus probable des oligomères est une série de BPT placées sur une hélice, tandis que les dimères devraient avoir une structure émétique avec les atomes de phosphore pentacoordinés. Ces résultats s'appuient sur l'analyse des spectres de RMN, les masses moléculaires et l'analyse élémentaire. Tous ces composés présentent une forte activité optique. Par ailleurs, en condensant PCl3 et les acides malique ou citrique, nous avons synthétisé des spirophosphoranes fonctionnalisés nouveaux 2.  相似文献

Abstract

Van Helmont's work was of major importance in seventeenth-century medicine, chymistry and natural philosophy. His work was a source of inspiration and mystery and an authoritas. His oeuvre was, together with that of many others, the culminating point of an ongoing process, starting in the Middle Ages, of turning medicine into a scientific discipline. In this essay, the appropriation, that is, the process of assimilation of an author's work by other scholars, of Van Helmont's oeuvre in England will be studied among chymists, physicians and natural philosophers (the distinctions between these three groups is primarily conceptual, but in practice hard to distinguish). Appropriation reminds us that the process of assimilating ideas of an author by contemporaries or later generations is not a passive activity, for scholars actively adapt and interpret them in new ways not initially envisaged by its original author.  相似文献

Some novel thiophenes (4a,b, 5, and 9a,b) were obtained from the cycloalkylation of the thiocarbamoyl group in the cyanothioacetanilide derivative (1) with α-halocarbonyl compounds. Also, the reaction of cyanothioacetanilide derivative with phenyl isothiocyanate in the presence of potassium hydroxide followed by in situ heterocyclization of the resulting adduct with α-halocarbonyl compounds furnished the corresponding thiazole (12, 14, and 15), pyrazole (19), and pyraozlo[1,5-a]pyrimidine (22, 25, and 26) derivatives. Compounds (4b, 5, 9a, 12, 13, 18, 22, 25, and 26) were tested to evaluate their antimicrobial activity.

Abstract

A new and practical synthesis of montelukast sodium, an antiasthmatic drug, is described. The key steps are the synthesis of nitrile derivative 4 by chiral reduction of keto ester 9 using (?)-DIP-Cl, synthesis of vinylquinoline framework 16 by Wittig reaction, and Heck coupling of nitrile 4 with vinylquinoline 16. The method is operationally simple and suitable for the industrial production of the drug substance.

Taking into account previously obtained biological results on some polyheterocyclic compounds (containing different heteroatoms) and in particular on several 8-amino-5-isopropyl-2,2-dimethyl-10-(methylthio)-1,4-dihydro-2H-pyrano[4’’,3’’:4’,5’]pyrido[3’,2’:4,5]thieno[3,2-d]pyrimidines Ia-v we have carried out the synthesis of twentyone 8-amino-5-isobutyl-2,2-dimethyl-10-(methylthio)-1,4-dihydro-2H-pyrano[4’’,3’’:4’,5’]pyrido[3’,2’:4,5]thieno[3,2-d]pyrimidines 6. Therefore we have slightly modified the structure of the previously studied I introducing at C-5 an isobutyl group instead of the previously examined isopropyl ones in order to see if this variation (changing a little the lipophilicity) will affect the biological activity. Furthermore thieno[3,2-d]pyrimidine-8-thione 7 and their S-alkylated 8 were synthesized. Finally by alkylation of 5-isobutyl-2,2-dimethyl-10-thioxo-1,4,10,11-tetrahydro-2H-pyrano[4'',3'':4',5']pyrido[3',2':4,5]thieno[3,2-d]pyrimidin-8(9H)-one 3 with alkyl dichlorides (bifunctional reagents) we realized the cyclization of a thiazole or thiazine ring on the [b] side of the pyrimidine ring with formation of the new condensed pentaheterocyclic systems: pyrano[4'',3'':4',5']pyrido[3',2':4,5]thieno[3,2-d][1,3]thiazolo[3,2-a]pyrimidin-8-one 11 and pyrano[4''',3''':4'',5'']pyrido[3'',2'':4',5']thieno[3',2':4,5]pyrimido[2,1-b][1,3]thiazin-8-one 12. It was found that some of the synthesized compounds showed interesting antimicrobial activity (by agar diffusion method) against some gram-positive and gram-negative bacilli strains.  相似文献

3-Ethyl 2-amino-4-methyl-5-phenyl thiophene carboxylate 1 was used as a starting material to synthesize 2a,b via coupling with malononitrile or acetyl acetone, respectively. When heated, under reflux in sodium ethoxide solution, 2a,b give 3a,b. On the other hand, when compounds 3a,b were heated under reflux in ethanol with hydrazine hydrate, thiourea, or 1,1-phenylenediamine hydrochloride and a catalytic amount of piperidine 4a,b, 5a,b and 6a,b, were produced, respectively. The new compounds were tested for their antimicrobial activity. Compounds 2a–6b showed antibacterial activities, and 2a,2b and 4b showed antifungal activities.

Abstract

A mild, efficient, and eco-friendly protocol for the protection of alcohols and phenols as trimethylsilyl ethers has been developed using rice husk ash as a reagent. This reagent is also able to catalyze the acetylation of alcohols, phenols, thiols, and amines with acetic anhydride. All reactions were performed under mild conditions in good to high yields.

Abstract

A modified form of Dana's apparatus is employed to measure the integral isobaric heats of vaporization of methanol-1,2-dichloroethane and methanol-1,1,1-trichloroethane mixtures at 720 mm Hg. The results are in good agreement with the values calculated from Gambill's equation.  相似文献
