In the present study, the interfacial behavior of overmolded hybrid fiber reinforced polypropylene composites (hybrid composites) in the working temperature range from 23 °C to 90 °C was studied by experimental and constitutive methods. Monotonic and cycle loading-unloading single-lap-shear tests were employed to determine the interfacial properties of hybrid composites. The experimental results show that both interfacial shear strength and shear stiffness decrease with increasing working temperature. A regression function was adopted to evaluate the decaying degree of interfacial properties with increasing working temperature. The shear stress-displacement relationship under monotonic loading exhibits nonlinear behavior after an initial elastic region. The envelope lines of shear stress-displacement of hybrid composites under cyclic loading indicate that the nonlinearity in the curve is caused by the plastic deformation of polypropylene in the interphase region. A constitutive model was built to describe the nonlinear shear stress-displacement relation of hybrid composites at different working temperatures. A full suite of temperature-dependent plastic parameters in the model was obtained from cyclic loading-unloading tensile tests. The predicted shear stress–displacement curves agreed well with experimental results from different working temperatures. In addition, the failure mode of hybrid composites varied with working temperature.  相似文献

The aim of the last part of this general study is to analyze the influence of the interfacial properties and, more precisely, the adhesion energy, between carbon fibers and PEEK on the final performance of unidirectional composites. A set of mechanical properties, i.e. interlaminar shear strength, longitudinal tensile and compressive and transverse tensile properties, of different unidirectional laminates with the same content (60% by volume) of carbon fibers is determined. It is first shown that the interlaminar shear strength is constant, whatever the type of materials. Therefore, this test is not appropriate to characterize the strength of the fiber–matrix interface in PEEK-based composites. On the contrary, in agreement with previous work on other systems, it appears that the ultimate properties (longitudinal tensile and compressive as well as transverse tensile strengths and strains) of the laminates increase with the interfacial adhesion energy, whereas the stiffness of these composites remains unaffected in all cases.  相似文献

It has been found that transcrystallinity of polypropylene (PP) develops easily on the polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) fiber surface in spite of the low surface energy of the fiber. Effect of the transcrystallinity on the interfacial strength has been extensively investigated using a single-fiber pull-out test. By controlling the crystallization temperature, range 25–130°C, the thickness of the transcrystalline layer varied from 0 to 175 μm for thick specimens, ca. 1 mm thick. Measurements of the adhesive fracture energy, the interfacial shear strength and the frictional stress were carried out for specimens with different embedded fiber lengths. Results show that interfacial strength and fracture energy are independent of the transcrystalline thickness. The calculated value of interfacial shear strength is 3.6 MPa, and the fracture energy for debonding is 2.1 J/m2. The presence of transcrystallinity does not promote the level of adhesion in PTFE/PP composites. However, the frictional stresses at the debonded fiber/matrix interface increase with transcrystalline thickness. It is attributed to the residual stresses which arise from shrinkage when specimens are cooled from crystallization temperature to room temperature. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

In order to improve the thermo-oxidative stability of three-dimensional and four-directional braided carbon fiber/epoxy composites, we introduced a gradient interphase reinforced by graphene nanoplatelets (GN) between the carbon fiber and the matrix, with a liquid phase deposition strategy. Both the interlaminar shear strength and the flexural strength of the composites were improved after thermo-oxidative aging at 140 °C for various durations (up to 1200 h). The interfacial reinforcing mechanisms are explored by analyzing the structure of the interfacial phase, thermal conductivity, weight loss, surface topography, fiber/matrix interfacial morphology and thermomechanical properties of the composites. Results indicate that the GN-reinforced gradient interphase provides an effective shield against interface oxidation, assists in thermal stress transfer, and restricts the movement of the different phases of materials at the composite interface.  相似文献

Matrix/fiber composites of β-form isotactic polypropylene(iPP) matrix and α-iPP or PA6 fibers were prepared by laminating technique under different preparation temperatures. The mechanical properties and interfacial morphologies of these composites were studied by tensile test, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. The experimental results show that the tensile yield load and tensile modulus of β-iPP/PA6 matrix/fiber systems increased significantly at the expense of elongation at break. These mechanical properties show essentially no dependence on the sample preparation temperature. On the other hand, the mechanical properties of iPP matrix/fiber single polymer composites depend strongly on the sample preparation temperature. At low sample preparation temperature, e.g., 172 ℃, the solid α-iPP fiber induces α-iPP crystallization, leading to the formation of α-iPP transcrystalline layer around the fiber. This results in a remarkable increment of the tensile yield load and tensile modulus. The elongation at break is also much better than that of the iPP/PA6 matrix/fiber system. It reflects a better interfacial adhesion of the single polymer composite compared with the iPP/PA6 composite. At higher sample preparation temperature, e.g., 174 ℃ or 176 ℃, the partial surface melting of the oriented fiber allows interdiffusion of iPP molecular chains in the molten fiber and matrix melt. The penetration of matrix chains into the molten iPP fiber results in some iPP molecular chains being included partially in the recrystallized fiber and the induced β-transcrystalline layers. This kind of configuration leads to an improvement of interfacial adhesion between the fiber and matrix, which causes a simultaneous increase of the tensile yield load, tensile modulus and elongation at break of β-iPP.  相似文献

Polyacrylonitrile-co-methacrylic acid (PAN-co-MAA) and cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) composite films were produced with up to 40 wt% CNC loading through the solution casting method. The rheological properties of the solution/suspensions and the structural, optical, thermal, and mechanical properties of the resulting films were investigated. The viscosity of the composite suspensions increased with higher CNC loadings and with longer aging times. PAN-co-MAA/CNC films maintained a similar level of optical transparency even with up to 40 wt% CNC loading. The glass transition temperature (Tg) increased from 92 to 118 °C, and the composites had higher thermal stability below 350 °C compared to both neat PAN-co-MAA and neat CNC. The mechanical properties also increased with higher CNC loadings, elastic modulus increased from 2.2 to 3.7 GPa, tensile strength increased from 75 to 132 MPa, and the storage modulus increased from 3.9 to 10.5 GPa. Using the Kelly and Tyson model the interfacial shear strength between the PAN-co-MAA and CNC was calculated to be 27 MPa.  相似文献

The aim of this third part is to analyze the structure and properties of the interfacial region between carbon fibers and PEEK as a function of different thermal conditioning treatments. First, it is shown by means of optical microscopy that the interfacial zone is not different from the bulk matrix when standard cooling conditions are used. On the contrary, a transcrystalline interphase is formed near the carbon fiber surface in systems that have been subjected to isothermal treatments. By comparison with previous results concerning the mechanical properties of the fiber–matrix interface, it appears that the interfacial shear strength decreases in the presence of a transcrystalline interphase or when the crystallization rate of PEEK increases. Moreover, it seems that the “constraint state” of the amorphous phase of PEEK near the fiber surface could also play a role in the interfacial shear strength. Secondly, a method is proposed in order to estimate the elastic modulus of crystalline interphases. It seems that this modulus is strongly dependent on the crystallization rate of the polymer. Finally, the determination of the stress-free temperature, defined as the temperature at which a longitudinal compressive stress just appears on the carbon fiber during the processing of the composites, is performed by recording the acoustic events corresponding to the fragmentation process in single-fiber composites. The results confirm that the crystallization rate and the “constraint state” of the amorphous phase of the matrix play an important role in the mechanical behavior of carbon fiber–PEEK interfaces.  相似文献

Aramid fiber (AF) reinforced by polyamide (PA) composites are excepted to have good interfacial matching due to their similar chemical interactions of hydrogen bonding. Thus, polarizing optical microscope (POM), transverse fiber bundle (TFB) test, and droplet micro-debonding technique were respectively performed to characterize interfacial crystallization, adhesion and shear behaviors of AF/PA6 composites with different thermal treatments. Both interface adhesion and AF fibrillation are enhanced with decreasing cooling rate or increasing annealing temperature due to the increased interfacial transcrystallization interaction. However, fast cooled interface also presents a high interfacial shear strength (IFSS) due to favorable normal residual stress. The apparent IFSS is believed to be a result of competition between crystallization enhancing interfacial interaction, interfacial mismatching aggravating debonding, and an uncertain residual stress positive or negative for load transfer. TFB failure mechanism including AF fibrillation and kinking are schematically presented. Fibrillation strength of AF is found to follow Weibull distribution evaluated by droplet micro-debonding technique.  相似文献

The strength, performance, and application of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) composites are directly affected by the interfacial bonding between fiber and resin. Wet winding technology is a commonly used composite productive process, and improving interfacial bonding of composites by on-line treatment has always been the focus of attention. In this paper, an on-line ultrasonic treatment system is designed and realized, the resin content of prepregs is determined by the dissolution method; standard deviation and dispersion coefficient are also calculated. The surface morphology, internal structure of prepregs, and the component of resin are observed and analyzed using a Metallurgical Microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and near infrared radiation spectra (NIRS). The strength and performance of prepregs [(tensile strength, bending strength, tensile modulus of elasticity, bending modulus of elasticity, and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS)] are also tested. The results show the on-line ultrasonic treatment system can effectively improve the interfacial bonding of CFRP composites and enhance the strength and performance of CFRP composites.  相似文献

Rossells fiber reinforced polypropylene composites were prepared by melt mixing. The fiber content was 20 wt%. Octadecyltrimethoxysilane (OTMS) and maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MAPP) were used to improve the adhesion between poly(propylene) (PP) and the fiber. The mechanical, rheological, and morphological properties, and heat distortion temperature (HDT) of the composites were investigated. Tensile strength, impact strength, flexural strength and HDT of MAPP modified PP composites increased with an increase in MAPP content. However, no remarkable effect of MAPP content on the Young's modulus of the composites was found. OTMS resulted in small decreases of tensile strength and Young's modulus, and increase in impact strength. Scanning electron micrographs revealed that MAPP enhanced surface adhesion between the fiber surface and PP matrix.  相似文献

Summary: This work intends to promote the use of natural fibers by comparing the behavior of isophthalic polyester matrix composites reinforced with unidirectional curaua fibers with that of unidirectional glass fiber composites. The composites were produced varying the reinforcement angle (0°, 15°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 75° and 90°) with the aim of studying the fiber orientation effect on composite strength. Composites were also made varying the fiber volume fraction (10%, 20%, 30%, 40% and 50%). The efficiency of an alkaline (5% NaOH) surface treatment of the curaua fiber was also evaluated. The unidirectional composites were characterized using tensile, flexural and short beam tests as per ASTM standards. The properties of a lamina reinforced with either glass or curaua fibers were also studied using theoretical micromechanical approach available in commercial software. The curaua fiber alkaline treatment produced higher tensile strength results compared with untreated fibers. The increase in reinforcement angle significantly decreased strength and modulus of the composites, as expected, and the glass fiber composites showed a more pronounced dependence with fiber orientation. Although the glass fiber laminas showed the best mechanical performance, the results obtained with the curaua fibers were considered similar for angles greater than 45°.  相似文献

Thermoplastic composites reinforced with natural fibers have attracted the attention of many researchers, not only for environmental concerns, but also for economic reasons, recyclability, ease of processing, etc. One promising application is in the automotive industry due to their low cost and weight. This industry is increasingly pressured to produce vehicles that consume less fuel and are less polluting. Therefore, plastics reinforced with fibers are required to produce lighter parts to replace the much more abrasive glass fiber and mineral filled composites. One of the most widely used polymers in the automotive sector for manufacturing interior and exterior vehicle components is talc filled EPDM (ethylene-propylene-diene monomer) toughened polypropylene (PP). In this context, the aim of this study was to assess mechanical and thermal properties of bamboo fiber reinforced recycled talc filled PP/EPDM composites compatibilized with maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (PP-g-MAH). Composites were prepared, according to a 22 factorial design with center point, in a Haake twin screw extruder with subsequent injection molding. Injected specimens were subjected to tensile, flexural, impact and fatigue testing. Morphological analyses were performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermal analyses by thermogravimetry (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Addition of bamboo fiber significantly increased tensile and bending strength, modulus and fatigue life, and decreased elongation at break and impact strength. On the other hand, addition of the compatibilizer had a positive effect only on tensile and flexural strength, and fatigue life whereas the effect was negative on elongation at break and impact strength. The addition of fiber and compatibilizer did not appreciably affect the matrix melting temperature, but slightly increased crystallization temperature and in some cases the degree of crystallinity.  相似文献

In this work, the rheological, mechanical and morphological properties of flax fiber polypropylene composites were investigated. The effect of incorporating a polypropylene grafted acrylic acid or a polypropylene grafted maleic anhydride on these properties has been studied as well. According to scanning electron microscopic observations and tensile tests, the addition of a compatibilizer improved the interfacial adhesion between the flax fibers and the polymer matrix. The tensile modulus of composite containing 30 wt% flax fibers was improved by 200 % and the tensile strength improved by 60 % in comparison with the neat PP. Plasticizing effect of the compatibilizers as a result of their lower melt flow index was also shown to decrease the rheological properties of the composites, even though the effect was not pronounced on the mechanical properties.  相似文献

High-strength woven fabrics and polymers are ideal materials for use in structural and aerospace systems. It is very important to characterize their mechanical properties under extreme conditions such as varying temperatures, impact and ballistic loadings. In this present work, the effects of strain rate and temperature on the tensile properties of basalt fiber reinforced polymer (BFRP) were investigated. These composites were fabricated using vacuum assisted resin infusion (VARI). Dynamic tensile tests of BFRP coupons were conducted at strain rates ranging from 19 to 133 s−1 using a servo-hydraulic high-rate testing system. Additionally, effect of temperature ranging from −25 to 100 °C was studied at the strain rate of 19 s−1. The failure behaviors of BFRP were recorded by a Phantom v7.3 high speed camera and analyzed using digital image correlation (DIC). The results showed that tensile strength, toughness and maximum strain increased 45.5%, 17.3% and 12.9%, respectively, as strain rate increased from 19 to 133 s−1. Moreover, tensile strength was independent of varying temperature up to 50 °C but decreased at 100 °C, which may be caused by the softening of epoxy matrix and weakening of interfaces between fibers and matrix when the glass transition temperature was exceeded.  相似文献

In this work, the investigation of the physical, mechanical, and morphological properties of the rice husk flour/polypropylene composites was performed utilizing various filler loadings and coupling agent. Five levels of filler loading (35, 40, 45, 50, and 55 wt%) were designed. In addition, to help the interaction between fiber and polypropylene matrix, struktol coupling agent was added to the composites. All of tensile strength, Young's modulus, flexural strength, flexural modulus, and impact strength properties of the composites were carried out. Moreover, the 50 wt% filler-loaded composites had optimum tensile strength, flexural strength, and flexural modulus, whereas the 35 wt% of filler loading case was the best regarding Young's modulus, flexural strength, flexural modulus, and impact strength. Furthermore, the scanning electron microscope results demonstrate that as filler loading increases, more voids and fiber pullout occur.  相似文献

Microfibrillated cellulose (MFC), a mechanically fibrillated pulp mostly consisting of nanofibrils, is a very attractive material because of its high elastic modulus and strength. Although much research has been done on composites of MFC and polypropylene (PP), it has been difficult to produce such composites at an industrial level because of the difficulties in using MFC in such composites are not only connected to the polarity (that can be improved with compatibilizers), but also with the challenge to make a homogeneous blend of the components, and also the low temperature stability of cellulose that could cause problems during processing. We developed a new processing method which enables continuous microfibrillation of pulp and its melt compounding with PP. Never-dried kraft pulp and powdered PP were used as raw materials to obtain MFC by kneading via a twin-screw extruder. Scanning electron microscopy showed nano to submicron wide fibers entangled in the powdered PP. MFC did not aggregate during the melt compounding process, during which the water content was evaporated. Maleic anhydride polypropylene (MAPP) was used as a compatibilizer to reinforce interfacial adhesion between the polar hydroxyl groups of MFC and non-polar PP. We investigated the effect of MAPP content on the mechanical properties of the composite, which were drastically improved by MAPP addition. Needle-leaf unbleached kraft pulp (NUKP)-derived MFC composites had better mechanical properties than needle-leaf bleached kraft pulp (NBKP)-derived MFC composites. Injection molded NUKP-derived MFC composites had good mechanical and thermal properties. The tensile modulus of 50 wt% MFC composite was two times, and the tensile strength 1.5 times higher than that of neat PP. The heat distortion temperature of 50 wt% MFC content composite under 1.82 MPa flexural load was increased by 53 °C, from 69 to 122 °C. This newly developed continuous process using powder resin has the potential for application at an industrial level.  相似文献

Summary: A broad variety of regenerated cellulose fibres was subjected to single fibre tensile tests in order to determine the modulus of elasticity, tensile strength, and failure strain. The results were compared to glass fibres and flax fibres, which are considered the most important technical and natural fibres, respectively. With regard to their modulus of elasticity and tensile strength, regenerated cellulose fibres showed clearly lower values than glass fibres, even when their low density was taken into account. The average modulus of elasticity and tensile strength of regenerated cellulose fibres was also lower than the values measured for flax fibres, but when variability was considered, both fibres performed similarly. In terms of interfacial shear strength with polypropylene, lyocell fibres performed significantly less well than sized glass fibre and ramie fibre. The most important difference between regenerated cellulose fibres and both glass and flax fibres is their high failure strain and thus high work to fracture. The high work to fracture of regenerated cellulose fibres makes them particularly useful for composite applications where high fracture toughness is required.  相似文献

The tensile properties of self-reinforced polypropylene composites, obtained by rapid extension of an isotactic polypropylene/atactic polypropylene melt, have been measured and correlated to morphological parameters derived from x-ray experiments. The longitudinal morphology of the core-fibrils is found to be independent of sample composition, while the lateral thickness of the fibers varies between 220 Å for iPP and 110 Å for the blend containing 50 wt.% aPP. Critical fiber lengths, as a function of sample composition and the elastic modulus and the yield stress of the fibers, could be determined. While the number of corefibrils increases with mass fraction of atactic polypropylene, the length of the lateral interface between fiber and matrix and the interface volume decreases with increasing aPP mass fraction. It is shown that this interface is responsible for the mechanical behavior of the composite by effecting the transfer of load from matrix to fiber.  相似文献
