Experimental observations of self-sustained pitch oscillations of a NACA 0012 airfoil at transitional Reynolds numbers were recently reported. The aeroelastic limit cycle oscillations, herein labelled as laminar separation flutter, occur in the range 5.0×104≤Rec≤1.3×105. They are well behaved, have a small amplitude and oscillate about θ=0°. It has been speculated that laminar separation leading to the formation of a laminar separation bubble, occurring at these Reynolds numbers, plays an essential role in these oscillations. This paper focuses on the Rec=7.7×104 case, with the elastic axis located at 18.6% chord. Considering that the experimental rig acts as a dynamic balance, the aerodynamic moment is derived and is empirically modelled as a generalized Duffing–van-der-Pol nonlinearity. As expected, it behaves nonlinearly with pitch displacement and rate. It also indicates a dynamically unstable equilibrium point, i.e. negative aerodynamic damping. In addition, large eddy simulations of the flow around the airfoil undergoing prescribed simple harmonic motion, using the same amplitude and frequency as the aeroelastic oscillations, are performed. The comparison between the experiment and simulations is conclusive. Both approaches show that the work done by the airflow on the airfoil is positive and both have the same magnitude. The large eddy simulation (LES) computations indicate that at θ=0°, the pitching motion induces a lag in the separation point on both surfaces of the airfoil resulting in negative pitching moment when pitching down, and positive moment when pitching up, thus feeding the LCO.  相似文献

A new three-component accelerometer force balance has been designed, calibrated and tested in hypersonic shock tunnel (HST2) of Indian Institute of Science. The newly designed balance is able to measure aerodynamic forces (within test time of one millisecond) on test models at angles of attack from 0 to 12°. Two models, a blunt cone with after body and a blunt cone with after body and frustum are used to establish the accuracy of the force balance. The tests were conducted for the above two configurations with a constant Mach number of 8 and total enthalpy of 2.0 MJ/kg. The effectiveness of the balance is demonstrated by comparing the forces and moments of measured data with AGARD models. The flow fields around the test model are simulated using a 3D axisymmetric Navier–Stokes solver and the simulated results were compared with the measured values. Measured and computed force data are matched within ±10% for two different models tested here. The accuracy of the force balance is also estimated with the Newtonian theory and the values are approximately ±10% for the axial component and ±8% for the normal and pitching moment components.   相似文献

The paper reports on experiments carried out over a wide range of Reynolds numbers in a high pressure wind tunnel. The model was a sharp-edged rectangular cylinder with aspect ratio height/width 1:5 (width/span ratio 1:10.8), which was investigated in both basic orientations, lengthwise (4×103<Re<4×105) and perpendicular to the flow (2.7×104<Re<6.4×105). The Reynolds number is based on the height of the model normal to the flow. Steady and unsteady forces were measured with a piezoelectric balance. Thus along with steady (i.e. time averaged values) including the base pressure coefficient, also power spectra and probability density functions were measured yielding for example Strouhal numbers, higher statistical moments, etc. A response diagram for the vortex resonance phenomenon was taken for the natural bending motion of the slender model. If lift coefficient for constant angle of attack is plotted against Reynolds number, a significant Reynolds number effect is seen. For α=4°, the curve shows an inflection point and the lift varies between 0.3 and 0.6. For α=6° and 2° there are similar variations shifted to lower and higher values of Re, respectively. Probably the shapes of separation bubbles that depend on the Reynolds number are responsible for these effects. No Reynolds number effects were observed when the long side was normal to the flow, an orientation where reattachment at the side walls is not possible. Comparing both basic cases (α=0° and 90°), the interpretation of the probability distributions of lift force leads to the conclusion that the possibility of reattachment (α=0°) seems to enhance the degree of order in the vortex shedding process.  相似文献

In this paper, the problem of two-dimensional fluid flow past a stationary and rotationally oscillating equilateral triangular cylinder with a variable incident angle, Reynolds number, oscillating amplitude, and oscillating frequency is numerically investigated. The computations are carried out by using a two-step Taylor-characteristic-based Galerkin (TCBG) algorithm. For the stationary cases, simulations are conducted at various incident angles of α=0.0–60.0° and Reynolds numbers of Re=50–160. For the oscillation cases, the investigations are done at various oscillating amplitudes of θmax=7.5–30.0° and oscillating frequencies of Fs/Fo=0.5–3.0 considering two different incidence angles (α=0.0°, 60.0°) and three different Reynolds numbers (Re=50, 100, 150). The results show that the influences of key parameters (incidence angle, Reynolds number, oscillating amplitude, and oscillating frequency) are significant on the flow pattern and hydrodynamic forces. For the stationary cases, at smaller angle of incidence (α≤30.0°), Reynolds number has a large impact on the position of the separation points. When α is between 30.0° and 60.0°, it was found that the separation points are located at the rear corners. From a topological point of view, the diagram of flow pattern is summarized, including two distinct patterns, namely, main separation and vortex merging. A deep analysis of the influence of Reynolds number and incidence angles on the mean pressure coefficient along the triangular cylinder surface is presented. Additionally, for the oscillating cases, the lock-on phenomenon is captured. The dominant flow patterns are 2S mode and P+S mode in lock-on region at α=0.0°. It is found at α=60.0°, however, that the flow pattern is predominantly 2S mode. Furthermore, except for the case of Fs/Fo=2.0, the mean drag decreases as the oscillating amplitude increases for each Reynolds number at α=0.0°. At α=60.0°, the minimum mean drag for Fs/Fo=1.5 is lower than that for stationary case, and occurs at θmax=15.0° (Re=100) and θmax=22.5° (Re=150), respectively. Finally, the effect of Reynolds number on a rotational oscillation cylinder is elucidated.  相似文献

In this research, the effect of flow regime change from subsonic to transonic on the air loads of a pitching NACA0012 airfoil is investigated. To do this, the effect of change in flow regime on the lift and pitching moment coefficients hysteresis cycles is studied. The harmonic balance approach is utilized for numerical calculation due to its low computational time. Verifications are also made with previous works and good agreements are observed. The assessment of flow regime change on the aforementioned hysteresis cycles is accomplished in the Mach number range of M=0.65–0.755. The reduced frequency and pitch amplitude also vary from k=0.03 to 0.1 and α0=1–2.51°, respectively. Results show that the effect of increase in Mach number is to increase and decrease the lift coefficient during downstroke and upstroke, respectively, whereas at low reduced frequencies, the effect of increase in Mach number may lead to a reverse manner when airfoil moves toward its extremum angle of attack. Results also reveal that as the pitch amplitude varies, the shape of lift coefficient hysteresis cycle depends more on the pitch amplitude than on the appearance of shock. It is shown that as the Mach number increases, the incidence angles correspond to the extremum pitching moment, and depending on the reduced frequency, lie between zero and extremum angle of attack. These incidence angles shift toward the extremum angle of attack as the reduced frequency decreases. Results also show that the increase in pitch amplitude at low Mach number, in such a way that leads to the formation of shock around the extremum angle of attack, causes the extremum pitching moment to appear around these angles and at high Mach number, depending on the reduced frequency, the extremum pitching moment incidence angles would be between zero and extremum incidence angle.  相似文献

Flow characteristics around the square cylinder and their influence on the wake properties are studied. Time-averaged flow patterns on the surfaces of square cylinder in a cross-stream at incidence are experimentally probed by surface-oil flow technique and analyzed by flow topology for Reynolds numbers between 3.9×104 and 9.4×104 as the incidence angle changes from 0° to 45°. Vortex shedding characteristics are measured by a single-wire hot-wire anemometer for Reynolds numbers between 5×103 and 1.2×105. The effects of topological flow patterns on the wake properties then are revealed and discussed. Flows around the square cylinder are identified as three categories: the subcritical, supercritical, and wedge flows according to the prominently different features of the topological flow patterns. The Strouhal number of vortex shedding, turbulence in the wake, and wake width present drastically different behaviors in different characteristic flow regimes. A critical incidence angle of 15° separates the subcritical and supercritical regimes. At the critical incidence angle the wake width and shear-layer turbulence present minimum values. The minimum wake width appearing at the critical incidence angle, which leads to the maximum Strouhal number, is due to the reattachment of one of the separated boundary layer to the lateral face of the square cylinder. If the Strouhal numbers are calculated based on the wake width instead of the cross-stream projection width of cylinder, the data in the subcritical and supercritical regimes are well correlated into two groups, which would approach constants at high Reynolds numbers.  相似文献

An experimental study of the flow field in a two-dimensional wall jet has been conducted. All measurements were carried out using hot-wire anemometry. The experimental facility has a rectangular slot nozzle of high aspect ratio l/b = 100 (where l and b are the length and height slot, respectively). Mean velocities and Reynolds stresses were determined with three nozzle Reynolds numbers (Re = 1 × 104, 2 × 104 and 3 × 104) and four different inclination angles between the wall and the flow velocity at the nozzle (β = 0°, 10°, 20° and 30°). Results indicate that all wall jets are self-preserving in the developed region. Normal to the wall two regions can be identified: one similar to a plane free jet and the other similar to a boundary layer. Downstream the interaction between these two regions creates a mixed or third region. The logarithmic region increases with the distance from the nozzle and with the Reynolds number. For the inclined wall jet, the spreading rate expressed in terms of jet half-width or maximum velocity decay with respect to the streamwise distance, asymptotes to a linear law. The streamwise locations where the jet becomes self-similar are farther from the exit than in parallel wall jet. The slope of both half-width and maximum velocity decay in the developed region are affected by both wall jet inclination angle and nozzle exit Reynolds number.  相似文献

This paper presents an experimental study of the flow around four circular cylinders arranged in a square configuration. The Reynolds number was fixed at Re=8000, the pitch-to-diameter ratio between adjacent cylinders was varied from P/D=2 to 5 and the incidence angle was changed from α=0° (in-line square configuration) to 45° (diamond configuration) at an interval of 7.5°. The flow field was measured using digital Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) to examine the vortex shedding characteristics of the cylinders, together with direct measurement of fluid dynamic forces (lift and drag) on each cylinder using a piezoelectric load cell. Depending on the pitch ratio, the flow could be broadly classified as shielding regime (P/D≤2), shear layer reattachment regime (2.5≤P/D≤3.5) and vortex impinging regime (P/D≥4). However, this classification is valid only in the case that the cylinder array is arranged nearly in-line with the free stream (α≈0°), because the flow is also sensitive to α. As α increases from 0° to 45°, each cylinder experiences a transition of vortex shedding pattern from a one-frequency mode to a two-frequency mode. The flow interference among the cylinders is complicated, which could be non-synchronous, quasi-periodic or synchronized with a definite phase relationship with other cylinders depending on the combined value of α and P/D. The change in vortex pattern is also reflected by some integral parameters of the flow such as force coefficients, power spectra and Strouhal numbers.  相似文献

This study experimentally investigates the energy harvesting capabilities of an oscillating wing with a passively actuated trailing edge. The oscillation kinematics are composed of a combined heaving and forward pitching motions, where the pitching axis is well behind the wing center of mass. Passive actuation is attained by connecting the trailing edge with the wing body using a torsion rod. The degree of flexibility of the trailing edge is represented by the Strouhal number based on the trailing edge natural frequency. The trailing edge passive response is studied for oscillation Strouhal numbers of 0.017, 0.025 and 0.033. Instantaneous aerodynamic forces are measured in a closed loop wind tunnel at a Reynolds number of 40 000, based on the free stream velocity and the wing chord length. Measured results include the effective angle of attack induced by the trailing edge actuation as well as the lift and moment during the oscillation cycle. For the imposed kinematics in this study, the pitching motion has a positive contribution to the mean power output whereas the heaving motion has a relatively small but negative contribution. Additionally, by decreasing the natural frequency of the trailing edge closer to that of the imposed oscillation frequency, the magnitude of the lift and moment forces and hence the mean power output, increases. It is found that there exists a strong correlation between mean power output and the effective angle of attack, shown through the passive trailing edge response, resulting in an increase in energy harvesting potential.  相似文献

The effect of cross-wind on a bluff-body in ground proximity is analysed experimentally. A recently introduced wind-tunnel model is used to analyse the effect of flow structures on the global forces and global moments. This study aims at creating a large database of the flow produced in the proximity of this bluff-body and giving some new insight into the physical mechanisms responsible for the increase in force in cross-wind situations. The importance of the model’s lee side to the global yawing moment is put forward. Two vortices are identified and changes in the slope of the yawing moment versus yaw angle are attributed to their presence.  相似文献

The present study employs a transient liquid crystal thermography to measure film cooling performance over constant curvature of concave and convex surfaces. This work investigates detailed distributions of both film cooling effectiveness and heat transfer coefficient on concave and convex surfaces with one row of injection holes inclined stream-wise at 35° at four blowing ratios (0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0) on four test pieces with different hole configurations. All test models have a row of discrete holes with a stream-wise injection angle (γ of 35° and a pitch-to-diameter ratio (P/d) of 3. The current work examines four different injection configurations, one with simple and three with 8° forward-expanded holes. Three compound angles of 0, 45 and 90° with air (ρc/ρm = 0.98) as coolants are tested under the mainstream Reynolds number (Red) of 2300 on concave surface, and 1700 on convex surface. Measured results of the concave surface show that both the span-wise averaged heat transfer coefficient and film cooling effectiveness increase with blowing ratios for all tested models. Higher heat transfer levels induced by large flow disturbance of compound-angle injection also lead to poorer overall film cooling performance, especially at high blowing ratio and large span-wise injection angle. Present results show that the best surface protection on the concave surface over the widest range of M can be provided by the forward-expanded holes with β = 0° (Model-B), followed by the forward-expanded holes with β = 45° (Model-C). Convex surface results show that the compound-angle injection indicates increases in both film cooling effectiveness and heat transfer at moderate and high blowing ratios. The forward-expanded hole with simple-angle injection provides the best film performance because of high film cooling effectiveness and low heat transfer coefficient at blowing ratio of 0.5.  相似文献

Centrifugal spray injected at various angles in gas crossflow has been studied experimentally using PIV visualization system and image-processing techniques. Experiments were carried out inside a rectangular duct (95 mm × 95 mm in cross-section) at ambient temperature and pressure, with different gas Reynolds numbers (vary from 12,900 to 45,000) and three injection angles (60°, 90° and 120°). The spray angle of the centrifugal nozzle is 80°, with D32 of 80 μm. The instantaneous images of droplets distribution and the values of the line-averaged D32 at different positions on the cross-sections along the flow field for each condition were obtained, and their flow field configurations were achieved. Quantitative assessments of mixing degree between two phases for different injection angles were determined using a spatial unmixedness parameter. It is found that the addition of droplets into the gas crossflow enhanced the turbulence intensity of the gas crossflow and caused different-scale vortices. The flow field structure, to a great extent, is dependent on the injection angle. The entrainment and centrifugal force of large vortex lead to uneven droplet distribution and moreover influence the mixing of droplets and gas crossflow. A better mixing result can be obtained with the injection angle of nozzles of 60°.  相似文献

The experimental investigations were carried out in order to have detailed information on the flow structure around perforated cylinders using high-image density Particle Image Velocimetry technique in shallow water flow. The depth-averaged free-stream velocity was kept constant as U=100 mm/s corresponding to the Reynolds number of Re=10 000 based on the perforated cylinder diameter. In order to analyze the effect of porosity, β on the flow structure, the porosities in the range of 0.1≤β≤0.8 with an increment of 0.1 were used and the results were compared with the bare cylinder case by means of velocity and vorticity contours, turbulent kinetic energy, Reynolds shear stress and streamline topologies. It was concluded that the porosity, β had a substantial effect on the control of large-scale vortical structures downstream of the cylinder in which the shear layers were elongated, fluctuations were significantly attenuated and formation of Karman Vortex Street was successfully prevented by the use of perforated cylinders.  相似文献

The generation of control moments without moving control surfaces is of great practical importance. Following a successful flight demonstration of creating roll motion without ailerons using differential, lift oriented, flow control the current study is a first step towards generating yawing motion via differential flow controlled drag.A wind tunnel study was conducted on a 21% thick Glauert type airfoil. The upper surface flow is partially separated from the two-thirds chord location and downstream on this airfoil at all incidence angles. An array of mass-less Piezo-fluidic actuators, located at x/c = 0.65, are capable of fully reattaching the flow in a gradual, controlled manner. The actuators are individually operated such that the boundary layer could be controlled in a 3D fashion.Several concepts for creating yaw motion without moving control surface are examined. The ultimate goal is to generate the same lift on both wings, while decreasing the drag on one wing and increasing the drag on the other, therefore creating a yawing moment. Decreased drag is created by effective part-span separation delay while increased drag can be created by enhanced generation of vortex shedding or by highly localized 3D actuation.Detailed measurements of 3D surface pressure distributions and wake data with three velocity and streamwise vorticity components are presented and discussed along with surface flow visualization images. The data provide evidence that yawing moments can be generated with AFC.  相似文献

This paper presents the effects of cross buoyancy and Prandtl number on the flow and heat transfer characteristics around three equal isothermal square cylinders arranged in a staggered configuration within an unconfined medium. Transient two-dimensional numerical simulations are performed with a finite volume code based on the SIMPLEC algorithm in a collocated grid system. The pertinent dimensionless parameters, such as Reynolds, Prandtl and Richardson numbers are considered in the range of 1 ≤ Re ≤ 30, 0.7 ≤ Pr ≤ 100 and 0 ≤ Ri ≤ 1. The representative streamlines, vortex structures and isotherm patterns are presented and discussed. In addition, the overall drag and lift coefficients and average Nusselt numbers are determined to elucidate the effects of Reynolds, Prandtl and Richardson numbers on flow and heat transfer. The flow is observed to be steady for all the ranges of parameters considered. The drag coefficient is found to decrease with Re (for Ri = 0) and Ri at low Pr, whereas it increases with Pr at higher Ri. The lift coefficient decreases with Ri at low Pr and increases with Pr at higher Ri. The time and surface average cylinder Nusselt number is found to increase monotonically with Re as well as Pr while it remains almost insensitive to Ri at low Pr.  相似文献

This work aims at investigating the mechanisms of separation and the transition to turbulence in the separated shear-layer of aerodynamic profiles, while at the same time to gain insight into coherent structures formed in the separated zone at low-to-moderate Reynolds numbers. To do this, direct numerical simulations of the flow past a NACA0012 airfoil at Reynolds numbers Re = 50,000 (based on the free-stream velocity and the airfoil chord) and angles of attack AOA = 9.25° and AOA = 12° have been carried out. At low-to-moderate Reynolds numbers, NACA0012 exhibits a combination of leading-edge/trailing-edge stall which causes the massive separation of the flow on the suction side of the airfoil. The initially laminar shear layer undergoes transition to turbulence and vortices formed are shed forming a von Kármán like vortex street in the airfoil wake. The main characteristics of this flow together with its main features, including power spectra of a set of selected monitoring probes at different positions on the suction side and in the wake of the airfoil are provided and discussed in detail.  相似文献

In the present study, flow control mechanism of single groove on a circular cylinder surface is presented experimentally using Particle image velocimetry (PIV). A square shaped groove is patterned longitudinally on the surface of the cylinder with a diameter of 50 mm. The flow characteristics are studied as a function of angular position of the groove from the forward stagnation point of the cylinder within 0°  θ  150°. In the current work, instantaneous and time-averaged flow data such as vorticity, ω streamline, Ψ streamwise, u/Uo and transverse, v/Uo velocity components, turbulent kinetic energy, TKE and RMS of streamwise, urms and transverse, vrms velocity components are utilized in order to present the results of quantitative analyses. Furthermore, Strouhal numbers are calculated using Karman vortex shedding frequency, fk obtained from single point spectral analysis. It is concluded that a critical angular position of the groove, θ = 80° is observed. The flow separation is controlled within 0°  θ < 80°. At θ = 80°, the flow separation starts to occur in the upstream direction. The instability within the shear layer is also induced on grooved side of the cylinder with frequencies different than Karman vortex shedding frequency, fk.  相似文献

The effect of corner angle variations on pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics is investigated in the fully developed region of wavy ducts with trapezoidal cross‐sections. The resulting enhancement of convection, with respect to corresponding straight ducts, can be attributed to the formation of longitudinal vortices close to the two parallel surfaces. Numerical simulations show that Nusselt numbers and friction factors increase with the decrease of corner angle from 90 to 60°, before levelling out around 60°. Nusselt numbers and friction factors also increase with the Reynolds number, and the slopes of their representative curves increase above a critical value of the Reynolds number because of the onset of time‐periodic flow oscillations. The flow past two identical circular cylinders in side-by-side arrangements at right and oblique attack angles is numerically investigated by solving the three-dimensional Navier–Stokes equations using the Petrov–Galerkin finite element method. The study is focused on the effect of flow attack angle and gap ratio between the two cylinders on the vortex shedding flow and the hydrodynamic forces of the cylinders. For an oblique flow attack angle, the Reynolds number based on the velocity component perpendicular to the cylinder span is defined as the normal Reynolds number ReN and that based on the total velocity is defined as the total Reynolds number ReT. Simulations are conducted for two Reynolds numbers of ReN=500 and ReT=500, two flow attack angles of α=0° and 45° and four gap ratios of G/D=0.5, 1, 3 and 5. The biased gap flow for G/D=0.5 and 1 and the flip-flopping bistable gap flow for G/D=1 are observed for both α=0° and 45°. For a constant normal Reynolds number of ReN=500, the mean drag and lift coefficients at α=0° are very close to those at α=45°. The difference between the root mean square (RMS) lift coefficient at α=0° and that at α=45° is about 20% for large gap ratios of 3 and 5. From small gap ratios of 0.5 and 1, the RMS lift coefficients at α=0° and 45° are similar to each other. The present simulations show that the agreement in the force coefficients between the 0° and 45° flow attack angles for a constant normal Reynolds number is better than that for a constant total Reynolds number. This indicates that the normal Reynolds number should be used in the implementation of the independence principle (i.e., the independence of the force coefficients on the flow attack angle). The effect of Reynolds number on the bistable gap flow is investigated by simulating the flow for ReN=100–600, α=0° and 45° and G/D=1. Flow for G/D=1 is found to be two-dimensional at ReN=100 and weak three-dimensional at ReN=200. While well defined biased flow can be identified for ReN=300–600, the gap flow for ReN=100 and 200 changes its biased direction too frequently to allow stable biased flow to develop.  相似文献

The appearance of a recirculation zone and the formation of non-stationary vortices behind a cylinder in the unconfined flow of a Herschel–Bulkley fluid have been studied by numerical simulation. The Herschel–Bulkley constitutive equation was regularised by using the Papanastasiou model. Special attention was paid to determining the numerical parameters and comparing them to existing results. The influence of the Oldroyd number and power-law index on flow morphology and, in particular, on the unyielded zones was studied over a wide spectrum (0  Od  10) and (0.3  n  1.8). It was seen that the greater the Oldroyd number, the greater the critical Reynolds numbers and Strouhal number for the two flow regimes. The influence of the power-law index is more complex.  相似文献
