Three Dimensional digital image correlation(3D-DIC) has been widely used by industry, especially for strain measurement. The traditional 3D-DIC system can accurately obtain the whole-field 3D deformation. However, the conventional 3D-DIC system can only acquire the displacement field on a single surface, thus lacking information in the depth direction. Therefore, the strain in the thickness direction cannot be measured. In recent years, multiple camera DIC (multi-camera DIC) systems have become a new research topic, which provides much more measurement possibility compared to the conventional 3D-DIC system. In this paper, a multi-camera DIC system used to measure the whole-field thickness strain is introduced in detail. Four cameras are used in the system. two of them are placed at the front side of the object, and the other two cameras are placed at the back side. Each pair of cameras constitutes a sub stereo-vision system and measures the whole-field 3D deformation on one side of the object. A special calibration plate is used to calibrate the system, and the information from these two subsystems is linked by the calibration result. Whole-field thickness strain can be measured using the information obtained from both sides of the object. Additionally, the major and minor strain on the object surface are obtained simultaneously, and a whole-field quasi 3D strain history is acquired. The theory derivation for the system, experimental process, and application of determining the thinning strain limit based on the obtained whole-field thickness strain history are introduced in detail.  相似文献

The determination of strain fields based on displacement components obtained via 2D-DIC is subject to several errors that originate from various sources. In this contribution, we study the impact of a non-perpendicular camera alignment to a planar sheet metal specimen's surface. The errors are estimated in a numerical experiment. To this purpose, deformed images - that were obtained by imposing finite element (FE) displacement fields on an undeformed image - are numerically rotated for various Euler angles. It is shown that a 3D-DIC stereo configuration induces a substantial compensation for the introduced image-plane displacement gradients. However, higher strain accuracy and precision are obtained - up to the level of a perfect perpendicular alignment - in a proposed “rectified” 2D-DIC setup. This compensating technique gains benefit from both 2D-DIC (single camera view, basic amount of correlation runs, no cross-camera matching nor triangulation) and 3D-DIC (oblique angle compensation). Our conclusions are validated in a real experiment on SS304.  相似文献

The computational efficiency and measurement accuracy of the digital image correlation (DIC) have become more and more important in recent years. For the three-dimensional DIC (3D-DIC), these issues are much more serious. First, there are two cameras employed which increases the computational amount several times. Second, because of the differences in view angles, the must-do stereo correspondence between the left and right images is equivalently a non-uniform deformation, and cannot be weakened by increasing the sampling frequency of digital cameras. This work mainly focuses on the efficiency and accuracy of 3D-DIC. The inverse compositional Gauss–Newton algorithm (IC-GN2) with the second-order shape function is firstly proposed. Because it contains the second-order displacement gradient terms, the measurement accuracy for the non-uniform deformation thus can be improved significantly, which is typically one order higher than the first-order shape function combined with the IC-GN algorithm (IC-GN1), and 2 times faster than the second-order shape function combined with the forward additive Gauss–Newton algorithm (FA-GN2). Then, based on the features of the IC-GN1 and IC-GN2 algorithms, a high-efficiency and high-accuracy measurement strategy for 3D-DIC is proposed in the end.  相似文献

In the present work, an experimental study is carried out to estimate the mixed-mode stress intensity factors (SIF) for different cracked specimen configurations using digital image correlation (DIC) technique. For the estimation of mixed-mode SIF׳s using DIC, a new algorithm is proposed for the extraction of crack tip location and coefficients in the multi-parameter displacement field equations. From those estimated coefficients, SIF could be extracted. The required displacement data surrounding the crack tip has been obtained using 2D-DIC technique. An open source 2D DIC software Ncorr is used for the displacement field extraction. The presented methodology has been used to extract mixed-mode SIF׳s for specimen configurations like single edge notch (SEN) specimen and centre slant crack (CSC) specimens made out of Al 2014-T6 alloy. The experimental results have been compared with the analytical values and they are found to be in good agreement, thereby confirming the accuracy of the algorithm being proposed.  相似文献

Optical methods that give displacement or strain fields are now widely used in experimental mechanics. Some of the methods can only measure in-plane displacements/strains on planar specimens and some of them can give both in-plane and out-of-plane displacement/strain fields on any kind of specimen (planar or not). In the present paper, the stereovision technique that uses two cameras to measure 3-D displacement/strain fields on any 3-D object is presented. Additionally, a quite inclusive list of references on applications of stereovision (and 3-D DIC) to experimental mechanics is given at the end of the paper.  相似文献

The effect of out-of-plane motion (including out-of-plane translation and rotation) on two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) digital image correlation measurements is demonstrated using basic theoretical pinhole image equations and experimentally through synchronized, multi-system measurements. Full-field results obtained during rigid body, out-of-plane motion using a single-camera vision system with (a-1) a standard f55mm Nikon lens and (a-2) a single Schneider–Kreuznach Xenoplan telecentric lens are compared with data obtained using a two-camera stereovision system with standard f55mm Nikon lenses. Results confirm that the theoretical equations are in excellent agreement with experimental measurements. Specifically, results show that (a) a single-camera, 2D imaging system is sensitive to out-of-plane motion, with in-plane strain errors (a-1) due to out-of-plane translation being proportional to ΔZ/Z, where Z is the distance from the object to the pin hole and ΔZ the out-of-plane translation displacement, and (a-2) due to out-of-plane rotation are shown to be a function of both rotation angle and the image distance Z; (b) the telecentric lens has an effective object distance, Zeff, that is 50× larger than the 55 mm standard lens, with a corresponding reduction in strain errors from 1250 μs/mm of out-of-plane motion to 25 μs/mm; and (c) a stereovision system measures all components of displacement without introducing measurable, full-field, strain errors, even though an object may undergo appreciable out-of-plane translation and rotation.  相似文献

An easy-to-implement yet practical single-camera microscopic stereo-digital image correlation(stereo-DIC) technique is proposed for surface three-dimensional(3D) deformation measurement of singe lap joint(SLJ) samples subjected to mechanical loads. The basic principles, optical configurations and implementation procedures of the proposed technique are described in detail. Compared with existing single-camera 2D-DIC technique, which has been regularly used for in-plane deformation measurement of a SLJ specimen, the proposed technique offers the special merit of simultaneously determining all the three displacement components by simply adding two additional optical elements to existing single-camera 2D-DIC systems. The accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed technique is demonstrated by measuring the 3D deformation of a SLJ specimen subjected to quasi-static tensile loads.  相似文献

Digital imaging methods have found a great interest in various engineering fields to study stress-deformation characteristics of materials. Recent enhancements in visual instrumentation with the availability of cost-effective hardware and software products make the digital imaging techniques a viable tool to replace direct strain or displacement measurement methods in engineering applications. In this study, deformation characteristics of bolted steel connections are investigated by calculating in-plane displacement distributions using digital image correlation method (DIC). Validation of the method is presented by comparing the strains measured in standard tension specimens using electrical resistance strain gages and the DIC method. Finite element analysis of the connection specimen is also performed to compare the in-plane displacement distributions calculated from both methods. Results from the validation process indicate that the strains obtained from the DIC method compare well with the results of strain gages. The findings also indicate that the displacement distributions calculated from the finite element method may differ from those of the DIC method in terms of distribution pattern, and the location and magnitude of the extreme values of displacements. It is suggested that the proposed method can be used to determine the in-plane displacement distributions for the bolted connections, hence to evaluate their deformation characteristics under loading.  相似文献

Digital image correlation (DIC) has seen widespread acceptance and usage as a non-contact method for the determination of full-field displacements and strains in experimental mechanics. The advances of imaging hardware in the last decades led to high resolution and speed cameras being more affordable than in the past making large amounts of data image available for typical DIC experimental scenarios. The work presented in this paper is aimed at maximizing both the accuracy and speed of DIC methods when employed with such images. A low-level framework for speckle image partitioning which replaces regularly shaped blocks with image-adaptive cells in the displacement calculation is introduced. The Newton-Raphson DIC method is modified to use the image pixels of the cells and to perform adaptive regularization to increase the spatial consistency of the displacements. Furthermore, a novel robust framework for strain calculation based also on the Newton-Raphson algorithm is introduced. The proposed methods are evaluated in five experimental scenarios, out of which four use numerically deformed images and one uses real experimental data. Results indicate that, as the desired strain density increases, significant computational gains can be obtained while maintaining or improving accuracy and rigid-body rotation sensitivity.  相似文献

A variety of experimental methods have been proposed for Portevin-Le Chatelier (PLC) effect. They mainly focused on the in-plane deformation. In order to achieve the high-accuracy measurement, three-dimensional digital image correlation (3D-DIC) was employed in this work to investigate the PLC effect in 5456 Al-based alloy. The temporal and spatial evolutions of deformation in the full field of specimen surface were observed. The large deformation of localized necking was determined experimentally. The distributions of out-of-plane displacement over the loading procedure were also obtained. Furthermore, a comparison of measurement accuracy between two-dimensional digital image correlation (2D-DIC) and 3D-DIC was also performed. Due to the theoretical restriction, the measurement accuracy of 2D-DIC decreases with the increase of deformation. A maximum discrepancy of about 20% with 3D-DIC was observed in this work. Therefore, 3D-DIC is actually more essential for the high-accuracy investigation of PLC effect.  相似文献

A novel method for simultaneously measuring whole field in-plane displacements by using optical fiber phase-shifting electronic speckle pattern interferometry (ESPI) is presented in this paper. A 1 × 4 single mode optical fiber beamsplitter is employed to split the laser beam into four beams of equal intensity. One pair of fibers is utilized to illuminate the diffuse target at equal angles in the horizontal plane so it is sensitive only to horizontal in-plane displacement. Another pair of optical fibers is set to be sensitive only to vertical in-plane displacement. The polarization directions of light emitted by fibers are the same for each pair, but are at a right angle between pairs. The optical fibers are equal in length for each pair, but are not equal between two pairs. In this case the speckles are interference between each pair of fibers, thus the horizontal and vertical displacement components can be obtained simultaneously. By means of a fiber phase shift technique we can obtain the quantitative data of whole field displacements. This method has made it possible to study the in-plane displacement of a thin metal plate, and the examples of the results are shown to demonstrate the novel method.  相似文献

A Kriging regression model is developed as a post-processing technique for the treatment of measurement uncertainty in classical subset-based Digital Image Correlation (DIC). Regression is achieved by regularising the sample-point correlation matrix using a local, subset-based, assessment of the measurement error with assumed statistical normality and based on the Sum of Squared Differences (SSD) criterion. This leads to a Kriging-regression model in the form of a Gaussian process representing uncertainty on the Kriging estimate of the measured displacement field. The method is demonstrated using numerical and experimental examples. Kriging estimates of displacement fields are shown to be in excellent agreement with ‘true’ values for the numerical cases and in the experimental example uncertainty quantification is carried out using the Gaussian random process that forms part of the Kriging model. The root mean square error (RMSE) on the estimated displacements is produced and standard deviations on local strain estimates are determined.  相似文献

In this work, we present the implementation of Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry (ESPI), Digital Speckle Photography (DSP) and Digital Image Correlation (DIC) as complementary techniques to measure in-plane micro and macro displacement. The main advantage of ESPI is its great sensitivity to small displacements (smaller than the size of the speckle). However, the contrast of fringes in this technique is severely affected by de-correlation effects when the in-plane displacement exceeds the size of the speckle. To eliminate the de-correlation effects, we use the DSP technique. It is possible to generate artificial speckles, usually bigger than those generated by means of illumination of the sample with laser light. By combining DSP and DIC the displacement field can be obtained when the ESPI method cannot be applied due to image de-correlation. The experimental results show that the combination of these techniques is useful to analyze deformations over a wider range.  相似文献

Environmental sensors moored on the New Jersey continental shelf tracked constant density surfaces (isopycnals) for 35 days in the summer of 2006. Sound-speed fluctuations from internal-wave vertical isopycnal displacements and from temperature/salinity variability along isopycnals (spiciness) are analyzed using frequency spectra and vertical covariance functions. Three varieties of internal waves are studied: Diffuse broadband internal waves (akin to waves fitting the deep water Garrett/Munk spectrum), internal tides, and, to a lesser extent, nonlinear internal waves. These internal-wave contributions are approximately distinct in the frequency domain. It is found that in the main thermocline spicy thermohaline structure dominates the root mean square sound-speed variability, with smaller contributions coming from (in order) nonlinear internal waves, diffuse internal waves, and internal tides. The frequency spectra of internal-wave displacements and of spiciness have similar form, likely due to the advection of variable-spiciness water masses by horizontal internal-wave currents, although there are technical limitations to the observations at high frequency. In the low-frequency, internal-wave band the internal-wave spectrum follows frequency to the -1.81 power, whereas the spice spectrum shows a -1.73 power. Mode spectra estimated via covariance methods show that the diffuse internal-wave spectrum has a smaller mode bandwidth than Garrett/Munk and that the internal tide has significant energy in modes one through three.  相似文献

The aim of this work is to estimate two important material properties of the polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) polymer by means of a single experimental test. The displacement fields around a crack tip are used for estimating the modulus of elasticity (or, Young's modulus) and Poisson's ratio. These parameters are evaluated by fitting linear fracture mechanic expression of displacement fields in the vicinity of the crack, for mode I, to the experimental data. Measurements of these displacements are carried out using digital image correlation (DIC) method. In this way, the experimental procedure is conducted by loading a double-edge-cracked plate specimen. In order to validate the results, two available experimental tests have been performed. The modulus of elasticity is determined by means of the tensile test, using a standard test machine. Moreover, the Poisson's ratio is obtained by measuring lateral compressive and longitudinal extensional strain using DIC method.  相似文献

A three-dimensional static nonlinear finite-element model of a 22-day-old newborn middle ear is presented. The model includes the tympanic membrane (TM), malleus, incus, and two ligaments. The effects of the middle-ear cavity are taken into account indirectly. The geometry is based on a computed-tomography scan and on the published literature, supplemented by histology. A nonlinear hyperelastic constitutive law is applied to model large deformations. The middle-ear cavity and the Young's modulus of the TM have significant effects on TM volume displacements. The TM volume displacement and its nonlinearity and asymmetry increase as the middle-ear cavity volume increases. The effects of the Young's moduli of the ligaments and ossicles are found to be small. The simulated TM volume changes do not reach a plateau when the pressure is varied to either -3 kPa or +3 kPa, which is consistent with the nonflat tails often found in tympanograms in newborns. The simulated TM volume displacements, by themselves and also together with previous ear-canal model results, are compared with equivalent-volume differences derived from tympanometric measurements in newborns. The results suggest that the canal-wall volume displacement makes a major contribution to the total canal volume change, and may be larger than the TM volume displacement.  相似文献

The incremental digital image correlation (DIC) method has been applied in the past to determine strain in large deformation materials like rubber. This method is, however, prone to cumulative errors since the total displacement is determined by combining the displacements in numerous stages of the deformation. In this work, a method of mapping large strains in rubber using DIC in a single-step without the need for a series of deformation images is proposed. The reference subsets were deformed using deformation factors obtained from the fitted mean stress-axial stretch ratio curve obtained experimentally and the theoretical Poisson function. The deformed reference subsets were then correlated with the deformed image after loading. The recently developed scanner-based digital image correlation (SB-DIC) method was applied on dumbbell rubber specimens to obtain the in-plane displacement fields up to 350% axial strain. Comparison of the mean axial strains determined from the single-step SB-DIC method with those from the incremental SB-DIC method showed an average difference of 4.7%. Two rectangular rubber specimens containing circular and square holes were deformed and analysed using the proposed method. The resultant strain maps from the single-step SB-DIC method were compared with the results of finite element modeling (FEM). The comparison shows that the proposed single-step SB-DIC method can be used to map the strain distribution accurately in large deformation materials like rubber at much shorter time compared to the incremental DIC method.

Subset-based local and finite-element-based (FE-based) global digital image correlation (DIC) approaches are the two primary image matching algorithms widely used for full-field displacement mapping. Very recently, the performances of these different DIC approaches have been experimentally investigated using numerical and real-world experimental tests. The results have shown that in typical cases, where the subset (element) size is no less than a few pixels and the local deformation within a subset (element) can be well approximated by the adopted shape functions, the subset-based local DIC outperforms FE-based global DIC approaches because the former provides slightly smaller root-mean-square errors and offers much higher computation efficiency. Here we investigate the theoretical origin and lay a solid theoretical basis for the previous comparison. We assume that systematic errors due to imperfect intensity interpolation and undermatched shape functions are negligibly small, and perform a theoretical analysis of the random errors or standard deviation (SD) errors in the displacements measured by two local DIC approaches (i.e., a subset-based local DIC and an element-based local DIC) and two FE-based global DIC approaches (i.e., Q4-DIC and Q8-DIC). The equations that govern the random errors in the displacements measured by these local and global DIC approaches are theoretically derived. The correctness of the theoretically predicted SD errors is validated through numerical translation tests under various noise levels. We demonstrate that the SD errors induced by the Q4-element-based local DIC, the global Q4-DIC and the global Q8-DIC are 4, 1.8–2.2 and 1.2–1.6 times greater, respectively, than that associated with the subset-based local DIC, which is consistent with our conclusions from previous work.  相似文献

In digital image correlation (DIC), the widely used forward-additive Newton–Raphson (FA-NR) algorithm and the recently introduced equivalent but more efficient inverse-compositional Gauss–Newton (IC-GN) algorithm are capable of providing both displacements and displacement gradients (strains) for each calculation point. However, the obtained displacement gradients are seriously corrupted by various noises, and for this reason these directly computed strains are usually considered as useless information and therefore discarded. To extract strain distributions more accurately, much research efforts have been dedicated to how to smooth and differentiate the noisy displacement fields using appropriate numerical approaches. In this contribution, contrary to these existing strain estimation approaches, a novel and alternative strain estimation approach, based on denoising the noisy strain fields obtained by FA-NR or IC-GN algorithm using a regularized cost-function, is proposed. The effectiveness and practicality of the proposed strain estimation technique is carefully examined using both computer-simulated images with imposed homogeneous and inhomogeneous deformation, and experimentally obtained images. Experimental results reveal that the strains obtained by the proposed method are comparable to those determined by post-processing of the displacement fields using conventional pointwise least squares strain estimation approach.  相似文献
