A set Ω, of Lebesgue measure 1, in the real line is called spectral if there is a set Λ of real numbers such that the exponential functions e λ (x)=exp (2πiλx), λ∈Λ, form a complete orthonormal system on L 2(Ω). Such a set Λ is called a spectrum of Ω. In this note we present a simplified proof of the fact that any spectrum Λ of a set Ω which is finite union of intervals must be periodic. The original proof is due to Bose and Madan.  相似文献

Let \mathfrakA\mathfrak{A} be a normed algebra with identity, Ω be a locally compact Hausdorf space and λ be a positive Radon measure on Ω with supp(λ) = Ω. In this paper, we establish a necessary and sufficient condition for L 1(Ω, \mathfrakA\mathfrak{A}) to be an algebra with pointwise multiplication. Under this condition, we then characterize compact and weakly compact left multipliers on L 1(Ω, \mathfrakA\mathfrak{A}).  相似文献

In this paper, firstly we calculate Picard groups of a nilpotent orbit 𝒪 in a classical complex simple Lie algebra and discuss the properties of being ℚ-factorial and factorial for the normalization 𝒪tilde; of the closure of 𝒪. Then we consider the problem of symplectic resolutions for 𝒪tilde;. Our main theorem says that for any nilpotent orbit 𝒪 in a semi-simple complex Lie algebra, equipped with the Kostant-Kirillov symplectic form ω, if for a resolution π:Z𝒪tilde;, the 2-form π*(ω) defined on π−1(𝒪) extends to a symplectic 2-form on Z, then Z is isomorphic to the cotangent bundle T *(G/P) of a projective homogeneous space, and π is the collapsing of the zero section. It proves a conjecture of Cho-Miyaoka-Shepherd-Barron in this special case. Using this theorem, we determine all varieties 𝒪tilde; which admit such a resolution. Consider a compact manifold M with boundary M endowed with a Riemannian metric g and a magnetic field Ω. Given a point and direction of entry at the boundary, the scattering relation Σ determines the point and direction of exit of a particle of unit charge, mass, and energy. In this paper we show that a magnetic system (M, M,g,Ω) that is known to be real-analytic and that satisfies some mild restrictions on conjugate points is uniquely determined up to a natural equivalence by Σ. In the case that the magnetic field Ω is taken to be zero, this gives a new rigidity result in Riemannian geometry that is more general than related results in the literature.  相似文献

Given a set π of primes, say that the Baer-Suzuki π-theorem holds for a finite group G if only an element of O π(G) can, together with each conjugate element, generate a π-subgroup. We find a sufficient condition for the Baer-Suzuki π-theorem to hold for a finite group in terms of nonabelian composition factors. We show also that in case 2 ∉ π the Baer-Suzuki π-theorem holds for every finite group.  相似文献

Let Ω[ξ] denote the polynomial algebra (with 1) in commutative indeterminates {ie65-1}, 1 ≦i, jn, 1 ≦k < ∞, over a commutative ring Ω. Thealgebra of generic matrices Ω [Y] is defined to be the Ω-subalgebra ofM n (Ω[ξ]) generated by the matricesY k=({ie65-2}), 1 ≦i, jn, 1 ≦k < ∞. This algebra has been studied extensively by Amitsur and by Procesi in particular Amitsur has used it to construct a finite dimensional, central division algebra Ω (Y) which is not a crossed product. In this paper we shall prove, for Ω a domain, that Ω(Y) has exponentn in the Brauer group (Amitsur may already know this fact); consequently, for Ω an infinite field andn a multiple of 4, iff(X 1, …,X m) is a polynomial linear in all theX i but one (similar to Formanek’s central polynomials for matrix rings) andf 2 is central forM n (Ω), thenf is central forM n (Ω). (The existence of a polynomial not central forM n (Ω), but whose square is central forM n(Ω) is equivalent to every central division algebra of degreen containing a quadratic extension of its center; well-known theory immediately shows this is the case of 4‖n and 8χn.) Also, information is obtained about Ω(Y) for arbitary Ω, most notably that the Jacobson radical is the set of nilpotent elements. Given an open bounded connected subset Ω of ℝn, we consider the overdetermined boundary value problem obtained by adding both zero Dirichlet and constant Neumann boundary data to the elliptic equation −div(A(|∇u|)∇u)=1 in Ω. We prove that, if this problem admits a solution in a suitable weak sense, then Ω is a ball. This is obtained under fairly general assumptions on Ω and A. In particular, A may be degenerate and no growth condition is required. Our method of proof is quite simple. It relies on a maximum principle for a suitable P-function, combined with some geometric arguments involving the mean curvature of ∂Ω.  相似文献

Let Ω be a countably infinite set, Inj(Ω) the monoid of all injective endomaps of Ω, and Sym(Ω) the group of all permutations of Ω. Also, let f,g,h∈Inj(Ω) be any three maps, each having at least one infinite cycle. (For instance, this holds if f,g,h∈Inj(Ω)∖Sym(Ω).) We show that there are permutations a,b∈Sym(Ω) such that h=afa −1 bgb −1 if and only if |Ω∖(Ω)f|+|Ω∖(Ω)g|=|Ω∖(Ω)h|. We also prove a generalization of this statement that holds for infinite sets Ω that are not necessarily countable.  相似文献

Given a set π of primes, say that a finite group G satisfies the Sylow π-theorem if every two maximal π-subgroups of G are conjugate; equivalently, the full analog of the Sylow theorem holds for π-subgroups. Say also that a finite group G satisfies the Baer-Suzuki π-theorem if every conjugacy class of G every pair of whose elements generate a π-subgroup itself generates a π-subgroup. In this article we prove, using the classification of finite simple groups, that if a finite group satisfies the Sylow π-theorem then it satisfies the Baer-Suzuki π-theorem as well.  相似文献

Let Ω be a finite set, and let G be a permutation group on Ω. A subset H of G is called intersecting if for any σ, πH, they agree on at least one point. We show that a maximal intersecting subset of an irreducible imprimitive reflection group G(m, p, n) is a coset of the stabilizer of a point in {1, …, n} provided n is sufficiently large.  相似文献

Formal Interactive Epistemology deals with the logic of knowledge and belief when there is more than one agent or “player.” One is interested not only in each person's knowledge and beliefs about substantive matters, but also in his knowledge and beliefs about the others' knowledge and beliefs. This paper examines two parallel approaches to the subject. The first is the semantic, in which knowledge and beliefs are represented by a space Ω of states of the world, and for each player i, partitions ℐi of Ω and probability distributions πi(·; ω) on Ω for each state ω of the world. The atom of ℐi containing a given state ω represents i's knowledge at that state – the set of those other states that i cannot distinguish from ω; the probability distributions πi(·; ω) represents i's beliefs at the state ω. The second is the syntactic approach, in which beliefs are embodied in sentences constructed according to certain syntactic rules. This paper examines the relation between the two approaches, and shows that they are in a sense equivalent.  In game theory and economics, the semantic approach has heretofore been most prevalent. A question that often arises in this connection is whether, in what sense, and why the space Ω, the partitions ℐi, and the probability distributions πi(·; ω) can be taken as given and commonly known by the players. An answer to this question is provided by the syntactic approach.  相似文献

LetX be a 1-connected space with Moore loop space ΩX. By a well-known theorem of J. W. Milnor and J. C. Moore [7] the Hurewicz homomorphism induces an isomorphism of Hopf algebrasU*X) ⊗Q)→H *X;Q). HereU(−) denotes the universal enveloping algebra and the Lie bracket on π*X) ⊗Q is given by the Samelson product. Assume now thatX is the geometric realization of anr-reduced simplicial set,r≥3. LetL X be a differential graded free Lie algebra over ℤ describing the tame homotopy type ofX according to the theory of [4]. Then the main result of the present paper is the construction of a sequence of morphisms of differential graded algebras betwenU(L X ) and the algebraC U *X)z of normalized cubical chains on ΩX such that the induced morphisms on homology with coefficientsR k are isomorphismsH r-1+l (U(L x );R k ) ≅H r-1+l C U *X);R k ) forl≤k; hereR 0R 1⊆… is a tame ring system, i. e.R k )⊑Q and each primep with 2p−3≤k is invertible inR k . However, it is no longer true that the Pontrjagin algebraH ≤r−1+k (ΩX; R k ) of ΩX in degrees ≤r−1+k is determined by π*X) or by a cofibrant (-fibrant) modelM of π*X) as will be shown by an example. But there is a filtration onH ≤r−1+k (ΩX; R k ) such that the associated graded algebra is isomorphic toH ≤r−1+k (U(M); R k ).This will be proved by using a filtered Lie algebra model ofX constructed from a bigraded model of π*X). In this paper we introduce the notion of multivalued analytic continuation of the Cauchy transforms. Many difficulties arise because the continuation is not single-valued. Our main result asserts that if χΩ has a multivalued analytic continuation, then the free boundary ∂Ω has zero Lebesgue measure. Here χΩ is the characteristic function of a domain Ω and ∂Ω is its boundary. We also discuss the connections between this notion, quadrature domains and approximations of analytic functions with single-valued integrals by rational functions. The last problem is related to the existence of a continuous function g and a closed connected set K such that the gradient of g vanishes on K, nevertheless g is not constant on K. We give the L p -boundedness for a class of Marcinkiewicz integral operators μΩ, μast; Ω, λ and μΩ, s related to the Littlewood-Paley g-function, g * λ-function and the area integral S, respectively. These operators have the kernel functions Ω∈H 1 (S n−1), the Hardy space on S n−1. These results in this paper substantially improve and extend the known results. This paper is devoted to relations between the Kurosh problem and the Shirshov height theorem. The central point and main technical tool is the identity of algebraicity. The main result of this paper is the following. Let A be a finitely generated PI-algebra and Y be a finite subset of A. For any Noetherian associative and commutative ring {ie125-01}, let any factor of RA such that all projections of elements from Y are algebraic over π(R) be a Noetherian R-module. Then A has bounded essential height over Y. If, furthermore, Y generates A as an algebra, then A has bounded height over Y in the Shirshov sense. This paper also contains a new proof of the Razmyslov-Kemer-Braun theorem on radical nilpotence of affine PI-algebras. This proof allows one to obtain some constructive estimates. The main goal of the paper is to develop a “virtual operator calculus.” Virtual operators (pasting, deleting, and transfer) depend not only on an element of the algebra but also on its representation. __________ Translated from Fundamentalnaya i Prikladnaya Matematika, Vol. 13, No. 2, pp. 3–29, 2007.  相似文献

Let Ω be a domain with piecewise smooth boundary. In general, it is impossible to obtain a generalized solution u ∈ W 2 2 (Ω) of the equation Δ x 2 u = f with the boundary conditions u = Δxu = 0 by solving iteratively a system of two Poisson equations under homogeneous Dirichlet conditions. Such a system is obtained by setting v = −Δu. In the two-dimensional case, this fact is known as the Sapongyan paradox in the theory of simply supported polygonal plates. In the present paper, the three-dimensional problem is investigated for a domain with a smooth edge Γ. If the variable opening angle α ∈ C(Γ) is less than π everywhere on the edge, then the boundary-value problem for the biharmonic equation is equivalent to the iterated Dirichlet problem, and its solution u inherits the positivity preserving property from these problems. In the case α ∈ (π 2π), the procedure of solving the two Dirichlet problems must be modified by permitting infinite-dimensional kernel and co-kernel of the operators and determining the solution u ∈ W 2 2 (Ω) by inverting a certain integral operator on the contour Γ. If α(s) ∈ (3π/2,2π) for a point s ∈ Γ, then there exists a nonnegative function f ∈ L2(Ω) for which the solution u changes sign inside the domain Ω. In the case of crack (α = 2π everywhere on Γ), one needs to introduce a special scale of weighted function spaces. In this case, the positivity preserving property fails. In some geometrical situations, the problems on well-posedness for the boundary-value problem for the biharmonic equation and the positivity property remain open. Let (G, I, N, S) be an affine topological Tits system, and let Γ be a torsion-free cocompact lattice in G. This article studies the coinvariants H 0(Γ; C(Ω,Z)), where Ω is the Furstenberg boundary of G. It is shown that the class [1] of the identity function in H 0(Γ; C(Ω, Z)) has finite order, with explicit bounds for the order. A similar statement applies to the K 0 group of the boundary crossed product C *-algebra C(Ω)Γ. If the Tits system has type ? 2, exact computations are given, both for the crossed product algebra and for the reduced group C *-algebra.  相似文献

This paper reviews some recent results on the parafermion vertex operator algebra associated to the integrable highest weight module L(k, 0) of positive integer level k for any affine Kac-Moody Lie algebra ĝ, where g is a finite dimensional simple Lie algebra. In particular, the generators and the C 2-cofiniteness of the parafermion vertex operator algebras are discussed. A proof of the well-known fact that the parafermion vertex operator algebra can be realized as the commutant of a lattice vertex operator algebra in L(k, 0) is also given.  相似文献

On eigenvalue pinching in positive Ricci curvature   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
We shall show that for manifolds with Ric≥n−1 the radius is close to π iff the (n+1)st eigenvalue is close to n. This extends results of Cheng and Croke which show that the diameter is close to π iff the first eigenvalue is close to n. We shall also give a new proof of an important theorem of Colding to the effect that if the radius is close to π, then the volume is close to that of the sphere and the manifold is Gromov-Hausdorff close to the sphere. From work of Cheeger and Colding these conditions imply that the manifold is diffeomorphic to a sphere. Oblatum 29-V-1998 & 4-II-1999 / Published online: 21 May 1999  相似文献
