Multilayer films were assembled from a copolymer containing both weakly and strongly charged pendant groups, poly(4-styrenesulfonic acid-co-maleic acid) (PSSMA), deposited in alternation with poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH). The strongly charged groups (styrene sulfonate, SS) are expected to form electrostatic linkages (to enhance film stability), while the weakly charged groups (maleic acid, MA) can alter multilayer film properties because they are responsive to external pH changes. In this study, we varied several assembly conditions such as pH, SS/MA ratio in PSSMA, and the ionic strength of the polyelectrolyte solutions. The multilayer films were also treated by immersion into pH 2 and 11 solutions after assembly. Quartz crystal microgravimetry and UV-visible spectrophotometry showed that the thickness of PSSMA/PAH multilayers decreases with increasing assembly pH regardless of whether salt was present in the polyelectrolyte solutions. When no salt was added, the multilayers are thinner, smoother, and grow less regularly. Atomic force microscopy images indicate that the presence of salt in polyelectrolyte solutions results in rougher surface morphologies, and this effect is especially significant in multilayers assembled at pH 2 and pH 11. When both polyelectrolytes are adsorbed at conditions where they are highly charged, salt was necessary to promote regular multilayer growth. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy studies show that the carboxylic acids in the multilayers are essentially ionized when assembled from different pHs in 0.5 M sodium chloride solutions, whereas some carboxylic acids remain protonated in the multilayers assembled from solutions with no added salt. This resulted in different pH stability regimes when the multilayers were exposed to different pH solutions, post assembly.  相似文献

Heme protein hemoglobin (Hb) or myoglobin (Mb) and silica nanoparticles in a variety of charge states were assembled layer-by-layer into films on solid surfaces to investigate the driving forces for film assembly. Cyclic voltammetry (CV), quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and UV-vis and reflectance absorption infrared (RAIR) spectroscopy were used to characterize the different [SiO2/protein]n films. Even when the proteins and silica were both negatively charged, stable layer-by-layer [SiO2/protein]n films were successfully fabricated, although amounts of protein were smaller than when nanoparticles and proteins had opposite charges. Results suggest the importance of localized Coulombic attractions between the negative nanoparticle surface and positively charged amino acid residues on the Mb or Hb surfaces in the assembly and for the stability of [SiO2/protein]n films.  相似文献

Exfoliated graphene particles stabilised by the cationic polyelectrolyte polyethyleneimine (PEI) were used in conjunction with an anionic polyelectrolyte, poly(acrylic acid), to construct multilayers using the layer-by-layer technique on a silica substrate. In the first adsorption step, the surface excess of the cationic graphene was dependent on the overall charge on the nanoparticle which in turn can be tuned through modifying solution pH as PEI has weakly ionisable charged amine groups. The adsorbed amount onto the silica surface increased as the solution pH increased. Subsequently, a layer of PAA was adsorbed on top of the cationic graphene through electrostatic interaction. The multilayer could be assembled through this alternate deposition, with the influence of solution conditions investigated. The pH of the adsorbing solutions was the chief determinant of the overall adsorbed amounts, with more mass added at the elevated pH of 9 in comparison with pH 4. Atomic force microscopy confirmed that the graphene particles were adsorbed to the silica interface and that the surface coverage of the disc-like nanoparticles was complete after the deposition of five graphene-polyelectrolyte bi-layers. Furthermore, the graphene nanoparticles themselves could be modified through the consecutive addition of the oppositely charged polymers. A multilayered assembly of negatively charged graphene sheets modified with a bi-layer of PEI and PAA was also deposited on a silica surface with adsorbed PEI.  相似文献

In this study, we report the functionalization of silica nanoparticles with highly photoreactive phenyl azido groups and their utility as a negatively charged building block for layer-by-layer (LbL) electrostatic assembly to produce a stable silica nanoparticle coating. Azido-terminated silica nanoparticles were prepared by the functionalization of bare silica nanoparticles with 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane followed by the reaction with 4-azidobenzoic acid. The azido functionalization was confirmed by FTIR and XPS. Poly(allylamine hydrochloride) was also grafted with phenyl azido groups and used as photoreactive polycations for LbL assembly. For the photoreactive silica nanoparticle/polycation multilayers, UV irradiation can induce the covalent cross-linking within the multilayers as well as the anchoring of the multilayer film onto the organic substrate, through azido photochemical reactions including C-H insertion/abstraction reactions with surrounding molecules and dimerization of azido groups. Our results show that the stability of the silica nanoparticle/polycation multilayer film was greatly improved after UV irradiation. Combined with a fluoroalkylsilane post-treatment, the photoreactive LbL multilayers were used as a coating for superhydrophobic modification of cotton fabrics. Herein the LbL assembly method enables us to tailor the number of the coated silica nanoparticles through the assembly cycles. The superhydrophobicity of cotton fabrics was durable against acids, bases, and organic solvents, as well as repeated machine wash. Because of the unique azido photochemistry, the approach used here to anchor silica nanoparticles is applicable to almost any organic substrate.  相似文献

Multilayer films were assembled from a strong polyelectrolyte (poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride), PDADMAC) and a copolymer containing both strongly charged styrene sulfonate moieties and weakly charged maleic acid moieties (poly(4‐styrenesulfonic acid‐co‐maleic acid), PSSMA). Growth of PSSMA/PDADMAC multilayers was linear, as characterized by UV‐vis spectroscopy and quartz crystal microgravimetry. The influence of both the pH of the PSSMA adsorption solutions and the ratio of SS:MA in the PSSMA on multilayer properties was investigated. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results showed that the ionization of carboxylic acid groups in PSSMA/PDADMAC multilayers did not vary significantly with changes in the PSSMA assembly pH. However, the multilayers showed different thicknesses, surface morphologies, and stability to post‐assembly pH treatment. We also demonstrate that PSSMA/PDADMAC multilayers are significantly more stable than PSSMA/PAH multilayers after post‐assembly pH treatment (i.e. the films remain intact when exposed to pH extremes). In addition, the surface morphology of two films (PSSMA 1:1 assembled at pH 5.8, post‐treated at pH 2 and PSSMA 3:1 assembled at pH 5.8, post‐treated at pH 11) changed significantly when the films were exposed to solutions of different pH and, in the former case, this change in film morphology was reversible. The porous morphology after treatment at pH 2 could be reversed to give a significantly smoother film after subsequent exposure to water for 24 h. Our results demonstrate that by the rational choice of the assembly pH of PSSMA, stable and pH‐responsive films can be obtained via the sequential assembly of PSSMA and PDADMAC. These films have potential in controlled release applications where film stability and pH‐responsive behavior are essential. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The growth, morphology, and interaction/adhesion properties of supported poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate)/poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PSS/PAH) and DNA/PAH multilayers were investigated by means of surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy, atomic force microscope (AFM) imaging, and AFM-related force measurements. Multilayers were assembled on a prelayer of poly(ethylenimine) (PEI) both with and without drying. SPR results showed a linear growth of the assembly in the case of PSS/PAH multilayers and nonlinear growth for DNA/PAH multilayers. Measurements of forces acting between a bare glass sphere and a multilayer-coated surface indicated repulsive or attractive forces, depending on surface charge, which suggests that, on approach, electrostatic forces dominate. On separation, we observed large pull-off forces in the case of positively charged multilayers and weak pull-off forces in the case negatively charged multilayers. Multiple adhesions and plateau regions observed on separation were interpreted in terms of a bridging of multiple polymer chains between the glass particle and the multilayer and a stretching of the polyelectrolyte loops. The dependence of the pull-off force on the number of deposited layers shows regular oscillations.  相似文献

Polymer/Au nanoparticle multilayer ultrathin films are fabricated via hydrogen-bonding interaction by a layer-by-layer technique. The Au nanoparticles surface-modified with pyridine groups of poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PVP) are prepared in dimethyl formamide (DMF). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) image shows that uniform nanoparticles are dispersed in the PVP chains. Poly(3-thiophene acetic acid) (PTAA) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) are utilized to form hydrogen bonds with PVP, respectively. Considering the pH-sensitive dissociation behavior of PTAA and PAA, we investigate the release behavior of the Au-containing multilayers at different pH values in this work. UV-vis spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM) are employed to monitor the buildup and the release of the multilayers. The results indicate that in the films assembled with gold nanoparticles, the polymers are difficult to be removed from the substrate. The interaction between the gold particles and the neighboring PVP chains is responsible for the phenomenon. Gold particles act as physical cross-link points in the multilayers. Due to the additional interaction caused by the gold nanoparticles in the films except the hydrogen-bonding interaction between PTAA (or PAA) and PVP, the stability of the Au-containing multilayer film is ensured even though the changes in pH values may result in the break of the hydrogen bonds.  相似文献

We performed molecular dynamics simulations of multilayer assemblies of flexible polyelectrolytes and nanoparticles. The film was constructed by sequential adsorption of oppositely charged polymers and nanoparticles in layer-by-layer fashion from dilute solutions. We have studied multilayer films assembled from oppositely charged polyelectrolytes, oppositely charged nanoparticles, and mixed films containing both nanoparticles and polyelectrolytes. For all studied systems, the multilayer assembly proceeds through surface overcharging after completion of each deposition step. There is almost linear growth in the surface coverage and film thickness. The multilayer films assembled from nanoparticles show better layer stratification but at the same time have higher film roughness than those assembled from flexible polyelectrolytes.  相似文献

Influence of assembly pH on compression and Ag nanoparticle synthesis of polyelectrolyte multilayers was studied using poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) and poly(4-styrenesulfonic acid-co-maleic acid, 1:1SS:MA) sodium salt (PSSMA 1:1) as the building blocks. The thickest multilayers turned out at pH 4. A homogeneous compression by a silicone rubber stamp increased significantly the water contact angle to a same value which was independent on the original assembly pH anymore. The multilayers assembled at pH 4 could be maximumly compressed to a ratio of 70% by a silicone rubber stamp with linear patterns, which was considerably larger than those assembled at other pHs (the compression ratio ~50%). The Ag nanoparticles were then synthesized inside the multilayers either flat compressed or not. The results showed that the compression reduced significantly the amount of Ag nanoparticles for the multilayers assembled at pH 2 and pH 4. The particle amount was also decreased significantly when the multilayers were assembled at higher pH, pH 6, for example, regardless of the compression. Substantial alteration of the multilayers in terms of the surface morphology, thickness and refractive index was found during the reduction of Ag(+) containing multilayers by NaBH(4) solution.  相似文献

The fabrication of stable polyelectrolyte/Au nanoparticle multilayer films was achieved by the UV irradiation of layer‐by‐layer self‐assembled multilayers consisting of diazoresins and Au nanoparticles. The method promises to be a simple and efficient strategy to construct covalently attached organic/inorganic multilayer hybrids.  相似文献

We performed molecular dynamics simulations of the electrostatic assembly of multilayers of flexible polyelectrolytes at a charged surface. The multilayer build-up was achieved through sequential adsorption of oppositely charged polymers in a layer-by-layer fashion from dilute polyelectrolyte solutions. The steady-state multilayer growth proceeds through a charge reversal of the adsorbed polymeric film which leads to a linear increase in the polymer surface coverage after completion of the first few deposition steps. Moreover, substantial intermixing between chains adsorbed during different deposition steps is observed. This intermixing is consistent with the observed requirement for several deposition steps to transpire for completion of a single layer. However, despite chain intermixing, there are almost perfect periodic oscillations of the density difference between monomers belonging to positively and negatively charged macromolecules in the adsorbed film. Weakly charged chains show higher polymer surface coverage than strongly charged ones.  相似文献

We studied the adsorption of gamma-Fe 2O 3 nanoparticles from an aqueous solution under different charged Langmuir monolayers (stearic acid, stearyl alcohol, and stearyl amine). The aqueous subphase was composed of a colloidal suspension of gamma-Fe 2O 3 nanoparticles. The average hydrodynamic diameter of the nanoparticles measured by dynamic light scattering measurements was 16 nm. The observed zeta potential of +40 mV (at pH 4) results in a long-term stability of the colloidal dispersion. The behavior of the different monolayer/nanoparticle composites were studied with surface pressure/area (pi/ A) isotherms. The adsorption of the nanoparticles under the different monolayers induced an expansion of the monolayers. These phenomena depended on the charge of the monolayers. After the Langmuir/Blodgett transfer on glass substrates, the nanoparticle/monolayer composite films were studied by means of UV-vis spectroscopy. The spectra pointed to increasing adsorption of the nanoparticles with increasing electronegativity of the monolayers. On the basis of these results, we studied the in situ adsorption of nanoparticles under the different monolayers by X-ray reflectivity measurements. Electron density profiles of the liquid/gas interfaces were obtained from the X-ray reflectivity data. The results gave clear evidence for the presence of electrostatic interaction between the differently charged monolayers and the positively charged nanoparticles. While the adsorption process was favored by the negatively charged stearic acid monolayer, the positively charged layer of stearyl amine prevented the formation of ultrathin nanoparticle layers.  相似文献

Novel protein core-shell nanocluster films were assembled layer by layer on solid surfaces. In the first step, positively charged heme protein hemoglobin (Hb) or myoglobin (Mb) and negatively charged poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS) were alternately adsorbed on the surface of SiO2 nanoparticles, forming core-shell SiO2-(protein/PSS)m nanoclusters. In the second step, the SiO2-(protein/PSS)m nanoclusters and polycationic poly(ethylenimine) (PEI) were assembled layer by layer on various solid substrates, forming [[SiO2-(protein/PSS)m]/PEI]n films. Various techniques were used to characterize the nanoclusters and monitor the film growth. [[SiO2-(protein/PSS)m]/PEI]n films at pyrolytic graphite (PG) electrodes exhibited well-defined, chemically reversible cyclic voltammetric reduction-oxidation peaks characteristic of the heme Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox couples. The proteins in the films retained near native conformations in the medium pH range, and the films catalyzed electrochemical reduction of oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. Advantages of the nanocluster films over the simple [SiO2/protein]n layer-by-layer films include a larger fraction of electroactive protein and higher specific biocatalytic activity. Using this approach, biocatalytic activity can be tailored and controlled by varying the number of bilayers deposited on the nanoparticle cores and the number of nanocluster layers on electrodes.  相似文献

Three-layer composite magnetic nanoparticle probes for DNA   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
A method for synthesizing composite nanoparticles with a gold shell, an Fe3O4 inner shell, and a silica core has been developed. The approach utilizes positively charged amino-modified SiO2 particles as templates for the assembly of negatively charged 15 nm superparamagnetic water-soluble Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The SiO2-Fe3O4 particles electrostatically attract 1-3 nm Au nanoparticle seeds that act in a subsequent step as nucleation sites for the formation of a continuous gold shell around the SiO2-Fe3O4 particles upon HAuCl4 reduction. The three-layer magnetic nanoparticles, when functionalized with oligonucleotides, exhibit the surface chemistry, optical properties, and cooperative DNA binding properties of gold nanoparticle probes, but the magnetic properties of the Fe3O4 inner shell.  相似文献

We report the preparation, characterization, and mechanical properties of polyelectrolyte/phosphorus dendrimer multilayer microcapsules. The shells of these microcapsules are composed either by alternating poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS) and positively charged dendrimer G4(NH+Et2Cl-)96 or by alternating poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and negatively charged dendrimer G4(CH-COO-Na+)96. The same multilayers were constructed on planar support to examine their layer-by-layer growth and to measure the multilayer thickness. Surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy (SPR) showed regular linear growth of the assembly upon each bilayer deposited. We probe the mechanical properties of these polyelectrolyte/dendrimer microcapsules by measuring force-deformation curves with the atomic force microscope (AFM). The experiment suggests that they are much softer than PSS/PAH microcapsules studied before. This softening is attributed to an enhanced permeability of the polyelectrolyte/dendrimer multilayer shells as compared with multilayers formed by linear polyelectrolytes. In contrast, Young's modulus of both dendrimer-based multilayers was found to be on the same order as that of PSS/PAH multilayers.  相似文献

We present a simple in situ method to fabricate silver (Ag) nanoparticle arrays in a layer-by-layer (LBL) assembled hyaluronan (HA)/poly(dimethyldiallylammonium chloride) (PDDA) multilayer structure, in which the LBL multilayered film is constructed by electrostatic attraction between positively charged PDDA and negatively charged HA, followed by in situ synthesis of embedded Ag nanoparticle arrays in the LBL "nanoreactors," where the abundant negatively charged carboxyl groups of HA bind and further reduce Ag(+) ions under UV-irradiating. The arrays morphology is highly dependent on the number of bilayers, and the surface density of nanoparticles in the arrays can be simply tailored by the number of irradiation/drying cycles during fabrication. The embedded Ag nanoparticle arrays possess good stability for localized surface plasmon resonance (SPR) absorption spectrum-based biosensors and superior antimicrobial capability. These render great potentials for the films in both biosensing and antimicrobial applications.  相似文献

Self-organized multilayer films were formed by sequential addition of oppositely charged cellulose I nanoparticles. The all-cellulosic multilayers were prepared via adsorption of cationicially modified cellulose nanofibrils (cat NFC) and anionic short crystalline cellulose (CNC) at pH 4.5 and pH 8.3. The properties and build-up behavior of layer-by-layer-constructed films were studied with microgravimetry (QCM-D) and the direct surface forces in these systems were explored with colloidal probe microscopy to gain information about the fundamental interplay between cat NFC and anionic CNC. The importance of the first layer on the adsorption of the consecutive layers was demonstrated by comparing pure in situ adsorption in the QCM-D with multilayer films made by spin coating the first cationic NFC layer and then subsequently adsorbing the following layers in situ in the QCM-D chamber. Differences in adsorbed amount and viscoelastic behavior were observed between those two systems. In addition, a significant pH dependence of cat NFC charge was found for both direct surface interactions and layer properties. Moreover the underlying cellulose layer in multilayer film was established to influence the surface forces especially at lower pH, where the cat NFC chains extensions were facilitated and overall charge was affected by the cationic counterpart within the layers. This enhanced understanding the effect of charge and structure on the interaction between these renewable nanoparticles is valuable when designing novel materials based on nanocellulose.  相似文献

A catalytic polymer multilayer shell motor has been developed, which effects fast motion‐based separation of charged organics in water. The shell motors are fabricated by sputtering platinum onto the exposed surface of silica templates embedded in Parafilm, followed by layer‐by‐layer assembly of polyelectrolyte multilayers to the templates. The catalytic shell motors display high bubble propulsion with speeds of up to 260 μm s?1 (13 body lengths per second). Moreover, the polyelectrolyte multilayers assembled at high pH (pH>9.0) adsorb approximately 89 % of dye molecules from water, owing to the electrostatic interaction between the positively charged polymers and the anionic dye molecules, and subsequently release them at neutral pH in a microfluidic device. The efficient propulsion coupled with the effective adsorption behavior of the catalytic shell motors in a microfluidic device results in accelerated separation of organics in water and thus holds considerable promise for water analysis.  相似文献

We report on the deposition and properties of multilayers composed of reactive polymers on planar surfaces. As reactive polymers the poly cations poly(ethylene‐imine), poly(L‐lysine) (PLL), poly(allylamime) (PAA) and the polyanions poly(acrylate) (PAC), poly(vinylsulfate), poly(maleate‐co‐olefines) were used. ATR‐FTIR Spectroscopy was adopted to study deposition, binding and stimulation properties of polymer multilayers. The binding of charged species of different molecular size such as rhodanide anions and sodium oleate from solution was examined, whereby binding was found to be dependent on the charge of the outermost layer. For these two analytes a selectivity parameter Q, defined as the ratio between the adsorbed amount obtained at the negatively charged and that at the positively charged surface, respectively, was determined. Furthermore, swelling experiments on multilayer assemblies of PLL and PAC exposed to mixtures of ethanol/water (10–70% EtOH content) were carried out. Our experiments gave evidence, that the PLL layers showed a more significant increase in density than the PAC layers. The conformation of PLL incorporated into multilayers could be changed by pH variation.  相似文献
