Consider the problem of estimating the common mean of two normal populations with different unknown variances. Suppose a random sample of sizem is drawn from the first population and a random sample of sizen is drawn from the second population. The paper gives a family of estimators closer than the sample mean of the first population in the sense of Pitman (1937,Proc. Cambridge Phil. Soc.,33, 212–222). In particular, the Graybill-Deal estimator (1959,Biometrics,15, 543–550) is shown to be closer than each of the sample means ifm5 andn5.  相似文献

Consider the problem of estimating the mean of a normal population when independent samples from this as well as a second normal population are available. Pre-test estimators which combine the two sample means if a test of the hypothesis of equal population means accepts but otherwise use only the first sample mean, are compared to limited translation estimators which are derived in the spirit of Bickel (1984, Ann. Statist., 12, 864–879) (we also cover the cases of unknown variances). Our conclusion is that if the accuracy with which the second population mean can be estimated is of the same or better order of magnitude as teh accuracy with which the first can be estimated, then the limited translation estimators largely dominate the pre-test estimators in terms of mean square error loss.This research was supported by grants from the FRD of the CSIR of South Africa.  相似文献

An interval estimation method for the common mean of several heterogeneous inverse Gaussian (IG) populations is discussed. The proposed method is based on a higher order likelihood-based procedure. The merits of the proposed method are numerically compared with the signed log-likelihood ratio statistic, two generalized pivot quantities and the simple t-test method with respect to their expected lengths, coverage probabilities and type I errors. Numerical studies show that the coverage probabilities of the proposed method are very accurate and type I errors are close to the nominal level.05 even for very small samples. Motivated by problems in molecular biosciences wherein the evaluation of entropy of a molecular system is important for understanding its thermodynamic properties, we consider the efficient estimation of entropy of a multivariate normal distribution having unknown mean vector and covariance matrix. Based on a random sample, we discuss the problem of estimating the entropy under the quadratic loss function. The best affine equivariant estimator is obtained and, interestingly, it also turns out to be an unbiased estimator and a generalized Bayes estimator. It is established that the best affine equivariant estimator is admissible in the class of estimators that depend on the determinant of the sample covariance matrix alone. The risk improvements of the best affine equivariant estimator over the maximum likelihood estimator (an estimator commonly used in molecular sciences) are obtained numerically and are found to be substantial in higher dimensions, which is commonly the case for atomic coordinates in macromolecules such as proteins. We further establish that even the best affine equivariant estimator is inadmissible and obtain Stein-type and Brewster–Zidek-type estimators dominating it. The Brewster–Zidek-type estimator is shown to be generalized Bayes.  相似文献

Simultaneous estimation of normal means is considered for observations which are classified into several groups. In a one-way classification case, it is shown that an adaptive shrinkage estimator dominates a Stein-type estimator which shrinks observations towards individual class averages as Stein's (1966,Festschrift for J. Neyman, (ed. F. N. David), 351–366, Wiley, New York) does, and is minimax even if class sizes are small. Simulation results under quadratic loss show that it is slightly better than Stein's (1966) if between variances are larger than within ones. Further this estimator is shown to improve on Stein's (1966) with respect to the Bayes risk. Our estimator is derived by assuming the means to have a one-way classification structure, consisting of three random terms of grand mean, class mean and residual. This technique can be applied to the case where observations are classified into a two-stage hierarchy.  相似文献

In this paper the problem of estimating the ratio of variances, , in a bivariate normal distribution with unknown mean is considered from a decision-theoretic point of view. First, the UMVU estimator of is derived, and then it is shown to be inadmissible under two specific loss functions, namely, the squared error loss and the entropy loss. The biasness problem of the maximum-likelihood estimate (MLE) of the common shape parameter of several Weibull populations is examined in detail. A modified MLE (MMLE) approach is proposed. In the case of complete and Type II censored data, the bias of the MLE can be substantial. This is noticeable even when the sample size is large. Such a bias increases rapidly as the degree of censorship increases and as more populations are involved. The proposed MMLE, however, is nearly unbiased and much more efficient than the MLE, irrespective of the degree of censorship, the sample sizes, and the number of populations involved. A necessary condition for the asymptotic normality of the sample quantile estimator isf(Q(p))=F(Q(p))>0, whereQ(p) is thep-th quantile of the distribution functionF(x). In this paper, we estimate a quantile by a kernel quantile estimator when this condition is violated. We have shown that the kernel quantile estimator is asymptotically normal in some nonstandard cases. The optimal convergence rate of the mean squared error for the kernel estimator is obtained with respect to the asymptotically optimal bandwidth. In this paper, we study the existence of the uniformly minimum risk equivariant (UMRE) estimators of parameters in a class of normal linear models, which include the normal variance components model, the growth curve model, the extended growth curve model, and the seemingly unrelated regression equations model, and so on. The necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the existence of UMRE estimators of the estimable linear functions of regression coefficients, the covariance matrixV and (trV)α, where α > 0 is known, in the models under an affine group of transformations for quadratic losses and matrix losses, respectively. Under the (extended) growth curve model and the seemingly unrelated regression equations model, the conclusions given in literature for estimating regression coefficients can be derived by applying the general results in this paper, and the sufficient conditions for non-existence of UMRE estimators ofV and tr(V) are expanded to be necessary and sufficient conditions. In addition, the necessary and sufficient conditions that there exist UMRE estimators of parameters in the variance components model are obtained for the first time.  相似文献

For a family of uniform distributions, it is shown that for any small < 0 the average mean squared error (MSE) of any estimator in the interval of values of length and centered at 0 can not be smaller than that of the midrange up to the order o(n –2) as the size n of sample tends to infinity.
