We investigate surface waves at the interface between a metal and a photovoltaic-photorefractive (PP) crystal. These surface waves appear in several forms: delocalized surface waves, shock surface waves, and localized surface waves. Only localized surface waves have limited energy. We demonstrate that the transverse sizes of localized surface waves decrease with an increase in the propagation constant and the amplitudes of localized surface waves increase with the propagation constant. The stability of localized surface waves is investigated numerically and it is found that they are stable.  相似文献

An analysis is made of the experimental investigations of the surface waves existing at the interface between a homogeneous medium and a periodically stratified medium that represents a bounded system of coupled waveguides. It is shown that, in all cases of the observation of surface waves, the bounded system of coupled waveguides has its own spectrum of guided modes and a spectrum of leaky modes that become surface waves of the system. It is also demonstrated that a biosensor can successfully operate when two surface waves serve as leaky modes of a Bragg waveguide in which the periodic system of waveguides is used as a distributed Bragg mirror of this waveguide. A structure supporting surface waves is designed on the basis of ten pairs of Nb2O5-SiO2 layers and implemented experimentally. The surface waves are detected with a K8 glass prism according to the Kretschmann scheme.  相似文献

Surface electromagnetic waves, which can propagate along the plane interface between a superfluid liquid and a normal metal, are investigated. The dispersion relations for surface waves with different polarizations of the optical anisotropy of the superfluid liquid are obtained and their possible frequency ranges are determined. It is shown that anisotropic optical contribution to the dielectric constant of the superfluid liquid can be determined from experiments on excitation of surface electromagnetic waves.  相似文献

Surface waves that propagate along the interface between an isotropic linear or nonlinear (of the Kerr type) dielectric and a topological insulator have been studied theoretically. A dispersion relation for surface waves, which are represented by superpositions of TE and TM waves, has been obtained. This hybridization occurs because, upon passage through the interface, the polarization of a surface wave changes, which is caused by an induced surface current (which is transverse to the electric field vector of the wave). The surface current of this kind is characteristic of topological insulators. Expressions for the energy flux transferred by a surface wave have been given.  相似文献

This paper reports on the results of investigating the frequency dependence, the structure, and the polarization-and energy-related characteristics of surface electromagnetic waves propagating along a superconductor-dielectric interface. An expression for the complex permittivity of a superconductor is derived in the approximation of a two-component plasma containing “normal” and “superconducting” electrons. Basic relations are obtained in the general case at temperatures TT c (where T c is the critical temperature) and in the limiting case at T?T c, when the contribution from normal electrons to the permittivity of the superconductor can be disregarded.  相似文献

The electrodynamic properties of the interface between two periodic dielectric superlattices are studied. It is shown that the interface may serve as a guide for an electromagnetic wave whose field decays exponentially on both sides of the plane of the interface. The behavior of surface polaritons that can propagate along a flat interface between a polarized Dirac vacuum and a normal metal is studied. Dispersion relations for the surface wave are derived for different field polarizations, and the frequency domains where this wave may exist are found. It is shown that a constant electric field polarizing a Dirac vacuum can be determined from experiments on surface wave excitation.  相似文献

A focusing array with a time reversal of waves in an inhomogeneous medium is considered. It is shown that, at the focus of such an array, an oscillation trap can be formed. In a homogeneous medium, a wave first travels to the array focus, is focused, and then travels away from the focus, whereas, in an inhomogeneous medium, the wave does not travel at all. In the oscillation trap, an intense oscillation is formed, which arrives from nowhere and escapes to nowhere. The size of the oscillation trap is much smaller than that of the focal spot of the array in free space. The physical nature of this phenomenon and the possible areas of its practical application are discussed.  相似文献

Analytical dispersion relations and the power flow expression for TM (polarized) nonlinear electromagnetic surface waves propagating along the interface of an inhomogeneous and dielectric nonlinear media have been investigated theoretically. An inhomogeneous dielectric cover has the dielectric permittivity=a+bz, which is contacted with a strongly nonlinear Kerr like layer. The existence conditions for these waves to be propagated are studied. These waves have no counterpart in the linear isotropic regime. The power flow versus the wave index, and the consequence interface nonlinearity might be evaluated for a variety of inhomogeneity parameters, which are found to be inhomogeneity dependent, and could lead to optical hysterisis and bistability.On leave from: Department of Electrical Engineering and Electronics, UMIST, P.O. The present investigation concerns the propagation of surface waves at the vacuum-solid interface of a solid which is isotropic and thermoviscoelastic, i.e., for which the effects of heat conductivity need to be taken into account. Calculations show that, in addition to the Rayleigh wave, a thermal surface wave propagates that couples both the thermal and the elasticity effects. This latter wave is interpreted in terms of evanescent plane waves. The displacement field associated with this wave is calculated and interpreted. A rigorous solution consistent with a plane wave approximation is given to the boundary problem for Maxwell’s equations for surface optical waves at the boundary with a nonlinear Kerr medium. Exact formulas for the flux intensity (J 0) and energy density (W 0) of these waves are derived depending on the parameters of the adjacent media and the propagation constant (ξ). It is shown that these variables as functions of ξ have minima. Thus, J 0 and W 0 increase sharply as the propagation constant deviates from the minimum value ξmin. Their values are greater, the larger the difference between the dielectric constants of the linear and nonlinear media is. An expression for the propagation velocity of a nonlinear surface wave is also obtained.  相似文献
