In this paper, we consider the expected probabilities of misclassification (EPMC) in the linear discriminant function (LDF) based on two-step monotone missing samples and derive an asymptotic approximation for the EPMC with an explicit form for the considered LDF. For this purpose, we also provide some results of the expectations for the inverted Wishart matrices in this paper. Finally, we conduct the Monte Carlo simulation for evaluating our result.  相似文献

The concept of quadratic subspace is introduced as a helpful tool for dimension reduction in quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA). It is argued that an adequate representation of the quadratic subspace may lead to better methods for both data representation and classification. Several theoretical results describe the structure of the quadratic subspace, that is shown to contain some of the subspaces previously proposed in the literature for finding differences between the class means and covariances. A suitable assumption of orthogonality between location and dispersion subspaces allows us to derive a convenient reduced version of the full QDA rule. The behavior of these ideas in practice is illustrated with three real data examples.  相似文献

Robust discrimination under a hierarchy on the scatter matrices   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Under normality, Flury and Schmid [Quadratic discriminant functions with constraints on the covariances matrices: some asymptotic results, J. Multivariate Anal. 40 (1992) 244-261] investigated the asymptotic properties of the quadratic discrimination procedure under hierarchical models for the scatter matrices, that is: (i) arbitrary scatter matrices, (ii) common principal components, (iii) proportional scatter matrices and (iv) identical matrices. In this paper, we study the properties of robust quadratic discrimination rules based on robust estimates of the involved parameters. Our analysis is based on the partial influence functions of the functionals related to these parameters and allows to derive the asymptotic variances of the estimated coefficients under models (i)-(iv). From them, we conclude that the asymptotic variances verify the same order relations as those obtained by Flury and Schmid [Quadratic discriminant functions with constraints on the covariances matrices: some asymptotic results, J. Multivariate Anal. 40 (1992) 244-261] for the classical estimators. We also perform a Monte Carlo study for different sample sizes and different hierarchies which shows the advantage of using robust procedures over classical ones, when anomalous data are present. It also confirms that better rates of misclassification can be achieved if a more parsimonious model among all the correct ones is used instead of the standard quadratic discrimination.  相似文献

Summary Typically, optimal properties for principal components concern the simultaneous minimization of eigenvalues of certain covariance matrices which measure the goodness of an approximation. Many population criteria like total variance and generalized variance, which are increasing functions of the eigenvalues, are then minimized by the best approximator. In other situations, the criterion may not be a monotone function of the eigenvalues. In Theorem 1, we derive a general optimal class based on the non-negative definite ordering of covariance matrices. A general class of optimal and distribution-free rank tests for the two-sample modal directions problem on (hyper-) spheres is proposed, along with an asymptotic distribution theory for such spherical rank tests. The asymptotic optimality of the spherical rank tests in terms of power-equivalence to the spherical likelihood ratio tests is studied, while the spherical Wilcoxon rank test, an important case for the class of spherical rank tests, is further investigated. A data set is reanalyzed and some errors made in previous studies are corrected. On the usual sphere, a lower bound on the asymptotic Pitman relative efficiency relative to Hotelling’s T2-type test is established, and a new distribution for which the spherical Wilcoxon rank test is optimal is also introduced.  相似文献

The limit behavior of the conditional probability of error of linear and quadratic discriminant analyses is studied under wide assumptions on the class conditional distributions. Results obtained may help to explain analytically the behavior in applications of linear and quadratic discrimination techniques.  相似文献

Asymptotic expansions, valid for large error degrees of freedom, are given for the multivariate noncentral F distribution and for the distribution of latent roots in MANOVA and discriminant analysis. The asymptotic results are expressed in terms of elementary functions which are easy to compute and the results of some numerical work are included. The Bartlett test of the null hypothesis that some of the noncentrality parameters in discriminant analysis are zero is also briefly discussed.  相似文献

Nyblom (J. Multivariate Anal. 76 (2001) 294) has derived locally best invariant test for the covariance structure in a multivariate linear model. The class of invariant tests obtained by Nyblom [9] does not coincide with the class of similar tests for this testing set-up. This paper extends some of the results of Nyblom [9] by deriving the locally best similar tests for the covariance structure. Moreover, it develops a saddlepoint approximation to optimal weighted average power similar tests (i.e. tests which maximize a weighted average power).  相似文献

We propose different nonparametric tests for multivariate data and derive their asymptotic distribution for unbalanced designs in which the number of factor levels tends to infinity (large a, small ni case). Quasi gratis, some new parametric multivariate tests suitable for the large a asymptotic case are also obtained. Finite sample performances are investigated and compared in a simulation study. The nonparametric tests are based on separate rankings for the different variables. In the presence of outliers, the proposed nonparametric methods have better power than their parametric counterparts. Application of the new tests is demonstrated using data from plant pathology.  相似文献

This paper explores some properties of the quadratic subspace, a tool for dimension reduction in discriminant analysis ( [Velilla, 2008] and [Velilla, 2010]). This linear manifold has a fairly complex structure, and it may sometimes include components with both mean and covariance separation properties. In this case, an assumption of orthogonality between the leading location directions and the bulk of the dispersion subspaces can help to find an adequate directional representation of it in practice. Two real data sets are analyzed.  相似文献

The problem of estimating the precision matrix of a multivariate normal distribution model is considered with respect to a quadratic loss function. A number of covariance estimators originally intended for a variety of loss functions are adapted so as to obtain alternative estimators of the precision matrix. It is shown that the alternative estimators have analytically smaller risks than the unbiased estimator of the precision matrix. Through numerical studies of risk values, it is shown that the new estimators have substantial reduction in risk. In addition, we consider the problem of the estimation of discriminant coefficients, which arises in linear discriminant analysis when Fisher's linear discriminant function is viewed as the posterior log-odds under the assumption that two classes differ in mean but have a common covariance matrix. The above method is also adapted for this problem in order to obtain improved estimators of the discriminant coefficients under the quadratic loss function. Furthermore, a numerical study is undertaken to compare the properties of a collection of alternatives to the “unbiased” estimator of the discriminant coefficients.  相似文献

In this paper we study the properties of a kurtosis matrix and propose its eigenvectors as interesting directions to reveal the possible cluster structure of a data set. Under a mixture of elliptical distributions with proportional scatter matrix, it is shown that a subset of the eigenvectors of the fourth-order moment matrix corresponds to Fisher’s linear discriminant subspace. The eigenvectors of the estimated kurtosis matrix are consistent estimators of this subspace and its calculation is easy to implement and computationally efficient, which is particularly favourable when the ratio n/p is large.  相似文献

A class of optimal adaptive multi-arm clinical trial designs is proposed based on an extended generalized Pólya urn (GPU) model. The design is applicable to both the qualitative and quantitative responses and achieves, asymptotically, some pre-specified optimality criterion. Such criterion is specified by a functional of the response distributions and is implemented through the relationship between the design matrix and its first eigenvector. The asymptotic properties of the design are studied using the existing methods on GPU. Some examples for commonly used clinical designs are given as illustration.  相似文献

Outcome-dependent sampling designs are commonly used in economics, market research and epidemiological studies. Case-control sampling design is a classic example of outcome-dependent sampling, where exposure information is collected on subjects conditional on their disease status. In many situations, the outcome under consideration may have multiple categories instead of a simple dichotomization. For example, in a case-control study, there may be disease sub-classification among the “cases” based on progression of the disease, or in terms of other histological and morphological characteristics of the disease. In this note, we investigate the issue of fitting prospective multivariate generalized linear models to such multiple-category outcome data, ignoring the retrospective nature of the sampling design. We first provide a set of necessary and sufficient conditions for the link functions that will allow for equivalence of prospective and retrospective inference for the parameters of interest. We show that for categorical outcomes, prospective-retrospective equivalence does not hold beyond the generalized multinomial logit link. We then derive an approximate expression for the bias incurred when link functions outside this class are used. Most popular models for ordinal response fall outside the multiplicative intercept class and one should be cautious while performing a naive prospective analysis of such data as the bias could be substantial. We illustrate the extent of bias through a real data example, based on the ongoing Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian (PLCO) cancer screening trial by the National Cancer Institute. The simulations based on the real study illustrate that the bias approximations work well in practice.  相似文献

This paper treats the problem of estimating positive parameters restricted to a polyhedral convex cone which includes typical order restrictions, such as simple order, tree order and umbrella order restrictions. In this paper, two methods are used to show the improvement of order-preserving estimators over crude non-order-preserving estimators without any assumption on underlying distributions. One is to use Fenchel’s duality theorem, and then the superiority of the isotonic regression estimator is established under the general restriction to polyhedral convex cones. The use of the Abel identity is the other method, and we can derive a class of improved estimators which includes order-statistics-based estimators in the typical order restrictions. When the underlying distributions are scale families, the unbiased estimators and their order-restricted estimators are shown to be minimax. The minimaxity of the restrictedly generalized Bayes estimator against the prior over the restricted space is also demonstrated in the two dimensional case. Finally, some examples and multivariate extensions are given.  相似文献

In this paper we present a general notion of Fisher's linear discriminant analysis that extends the classical multivariate concept to situations that allow for function-valued random elements. The development uses a bijective mapping that connects a second order process to the reproducing kernel Hilbert space generated by its within class covariance kernel. This approach provides a seamless transition between Fisher's original development and infinite dimensional settings that lends itself well to computation via smoothing and regularization. Simulation results and real data examples are provided to illustrate the methodology.  相似文献

This paper deals with the problem of quantization of a random variable X taking values in a separable and reflexive Banach space, and with the related question of clustering independent random observations distributed as X. To this end, we use a quantization scheme with a class of distortion measures called Bregman divergences, and provide conditions ensuring the existence of an optimal quantizer and an empirically optimal quantizer. Rates of convergence are also discussed.  相似文献

The purpose of this article is to review the findings of Professor Fujikoshi which are primarily in multivariate analysis. He derived many asymptotic expansions for multivariate statistics which include MANOVA tests, dimensionality tests and latent roots under normality and nonnormality. He has made a large contribution in the study on theoretical accuracy for asymptotic expansions by deriving explicit error bounds. A large contribution has been also made in an important problem involving the selection of variables with introducing “no additional information hypotheses” in some multivariate models and the application of model selection criteria. Recently he is challenging to a high-dimensional statistical problem. He has been involved in other topics in multivariate analysis, such as power comparison of a class of tests, monotone transformations with improved approximations, etc.  相似文献

Analysis of repeated measures under unequal variances   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Problem of making inferences on a widely used repeated measures model is considered without the assumption of equal error variances. By taking the generalized approach to making statistical inference, we derive necessary formulae to compute exact generalized p-values for testing the equality of treatment effects, occasion effects, and their interactions. We also provide formulae for making inferences about the variance components of the model. Advantage of the generalized p-values over the classical F-test is demonstrated by means of an example.  相似文献
