This study reports 5 years of (1998-2003) data on continuous solar-irradiation measurements from a scanning spectroradiometer (SUV-100) in Valdivia, Chile (39 degrees S), accompanied by evaluation of the impact of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) on marine macroalgae of this site. UVR conditions showed a strong seasonal variation, which was less pronounced toward longer wavelengths. Daily maximum dose rates (clear days) averaged in winter-summer: UV-B(290-315 nm) 0.30-2.1, UV-B(290-320 nm) 0.70-3.7, UV-A(315-400 nm) 20.6-62.1, UV-A(320-400 nm) 20.2-60.5 W m(-2), and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) 969-2423 micromol m(-2) s(-1). The corresponding daily doses (all the days) ranged: UV-B(290-315 nm) 2.6-40.7, UV-B(290-320 nm) 6.7-78.5, UV-A(315-400 nm) 228-1539, UV-A(320-400 nm) 224-1501, and PAR 2008-13308 kJ m(-2) d(-1). Taking into consideration action spectra of a biological interest, the risk of UV exposure could be up to 37 times higher in summer than in winter. The photosynthetic activity (as maximum quantum yield of chlorophyll fluorescence, F(v)/F(m)) of the brown alga Lessonia nigrescens from the infralittoral zone was markedly more sensitive to UVR than of the green alga Enteromorpha intestinalis from the upper midlittoral, and the UV-B wave band increased markedly photoinhibition. In L. nigrescens, maximal photoinhibition (40%) took place at weighted (the action spectrum for photoinhibition of photosynthesis) UVR doses of 800 kJ m(-2), irrespective of the season (corresponding midsummer daily dose in Valdivia is 480 kJ m(-2)). In winter, when this alga was at its most sensitive, the weighted UV dose causing 35-40% photoinhibition was around 200 kJ m(-2). In E. intestinalis, weighted doses of 800 kJ m(-2) resulted in low photoinhibition (<10 %) and no clear seasonal patterns could be inferred. These results confirm that midday summer levels of UV-B and their daily doses in southern Chile are high enough to produce stress to intertidal macroalgae.  相似文献

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is widely distributed in surface waters where the primary photochemical formation pathway involves the interaction between dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and ultraviolet radiation (UVR). In laboratory studies using iron-rich water from Yellow-stone's Chocolate Pots spring, H2O2 formation depended on sample treatment (unfiltered, < 0.2 micron filtered, autoclaved) prior to irradiation, suggesting several formation pathways. Similar H2O2 formation in filtered and unfiltered water indicates that it is primarily soluble material that is responsible for H2O2 formation. H2O2 formation with soluble material probably includes only photochemical reactions with DOC and/or metals. Greater H2O2 formation in unfiltered and filtered water than in autoclaved water suggests that the agent(s) involved in H2O2 formation is (are) not stable at high temperatures and pressures and degrade to nonphotoreactive species. Such unstable agents may include DOC and/or dissolved complexes of iron or other metals. UVR absorbance occurs across the UV spectrum and, though slightly greater in the UVA range (320-400 nm), is similar to that of other surface waters. Increased UVR absorbance after autoclaving suggested degradation or alteration of some components, which in turn affected H2O2 formation. The spectral region used for irradiation affected net formation and yield. H2O2 formation in water irradiated with UVA radiation was 2.5-3 times that formed in water irradiated with UVB radiation (280-320 nm) in experiments using artificial light sources. Apparent quantum yields comparable to those reported by others could not be calculated because the instrumental designs are not the same. However, approximate quantum yields were calculated for these experiments but should be viewed with caution. Quantum yields were higher in these experiments (0.0040 mol H2O2 per mol photon at 310 nm and 0.0012 mol H2O2 per mol photon at 350 nm) than values reported by other researchers (< 0.0007 mol H2O2 per mol photon at 300 nm and < 0.0005 H2O2 per mol photon at 340 nm; [Scully, N. M., D. R. S. Lean, D. J. McQueen and W. J. Cooper (1996) Limnol. Oceanogr. 41, 540-548]). In natural solar source experiments, H2O2 formation was greater in experiments with UVA and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR; 400-700 nm) than with PAR alone or with UVB, UVA and PAR. However, H2O2 capacity (nM H2O2 W-1 h-1 m2) was greatest with UVB radiation and lowest with PAR radiation. Source regions could not be studied separately. Dark decay of H2O2 occurred via two mechanisms. The main mechanism responsible for H2O2 decay involved particulate matter (probably microorganisms), whereas a secondary mechanism involved soluble matter (i.e. DOC, metal ions and other dissolved species involved in Fenton reactions).  相似文献

Atmospheric and in‐water solar radiation, including UVR‐B, UVR‐A and PAR, as well as chromophoric dissolved organic matter absorption [aCDOM(λ)] in surface waters were monthly measured from November 2007 to December 2008 at a coastal station in the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea (Bay of Marseilles, France). Our results showed that the UVR‐B/UVR–A ratio followed the same trend in the atmosphere and at 2 m depth in the water (P < 0.0001) with an increase (eight‐fold higher) during summer. The low diffuse attenuation coefficients for downward irradiance [Kd(λ)] of UVR‐B, UVR‐A and PAR indicated that the waters were highly transparent throughout the year. The relationships between aCDOM(λ) and Kd(λ) in this oligotrophic system suggested that CDOM contributed to UVR attenuation in the UVA domain, but also played a significant role in PAR attenuation. Mean UV doses received in the mixed layer depth were higher by a factor 1.4–33 relative to doses received at fixed depths (5 and 10 m) in summer (stratified period), while the inverse pattern was found in winter (mixing period). This shows the importance of taking into account the vertical mixing in the evaluation of UVR effects on marine organisms.  相似文献

The spatial distribution of the two-spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae Koch is biased toward the lower surfaces of leaves as compared with the upper leaf surfaces on their host plants. Because of the deleterious effects of solar ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, we hypothesized T. urticae remains on lower leaf surfaces as an adaptation to avoid solar UV radiation (UVR). We examined the effects of solar UVR components on females and tested whether spatial distribution was associated with solar UVR avoidance. Attenuation of solar UVR using UV opaque film increased fecundity and reduced the movement of females from the upper to the lower leaf surfaces. In contrast, diverting solar UVR to the lower leaf surface using a light reflection sheet caused the mites to move from the lower to the upper leaf surfaces; however, attenuated UV reflection did not, suggesting that they occupy the lower leaf surface to avoid solar UVR. In monochromatic UVR tests, no eggs hatched when placed under 280–300 nm radiation, whereas almost all eggs hatched at 320–360 nm. Adult females, however, did not avoid wavelengths of 280 and 300 nm, but avoided 320–340 nm. We conclude that T. urticae exploit UVA information to avoid ambient UVB radiation.  相似文献

The effects of increased UV radiation (UV-B [280-320 nm] + UV-A [320-400 nm]; hereafter UVR) on the growth, production of photosynthetic pigments and photoprotective mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) were studied in the threatened Caribbean coral Acropora cervicornis transplanted from 20 to 1 m depth in La Parguera, Puerto Rico. The UVR exposure by the transplanted colonies was significantly higher than that at 20 m, while photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) only increased by 9%. Photosynthetic pigments, quantified with HPLC, as well as linear extension rates and skeletal densities, were significantly reduced 1 month after transplantation to 1 m depth, while MAAs increased significantly despite immediate paling experienced by transplanted colonies. While these colonies showed a significant reduction in photosynthetic pigments, there were no significant reductions in zooxanthellae densities suggesting photoacclimation of the coral's symbionts to the new radiation conditions. The results suggest that while corals might be able to survive sudden increases in UVR and PAR, their skeletal structure can be greatly debilitated due to a reduction in the photosynthetic capacity of their symbionts and a possible relocation of resources.  相似文献

Photomovement measurements were carried out with swarmers of the brown algae Scytosiphon lomentaria (Lyngb.) Link and Petalonia fascia (O. F. Müll.) as a function of irradiance direction, photon irradiance, spectral composition and ultraviolet radiation (UVR, lambda=280-400 nm) dose. Swarmers from both species showed similar photomovement patterns: negative phototaxis occurred under photon irradiances of 10-90 micromol photons m(-2) s(-1), and no movement was observed at 190 micromol photons m(-2) s(-1). The translocational velocity measured between 10 and 90 micromol m(-2) s(-1) ranged from 100 to 200 microm s(-1). The accumulation of swarmers presented a peak at 450 nm (waveband of 50 nm), and smaller peaks at 400 and 500 nm; no effect was observed at wavelengths of 550 nm and above. The decline in phototactic index (an estimator of photomovement response) of swarmers was linearly correlated with the logarithm of UVR doses. These data were correlated with levels of natural solar radiation in the field. It is hypothesized that motility of swarmers could be a critical factor in the survival of these species under a scenario of increased UVR.  相似文献

Solar UV radiation (280-400 nm) may affect morphology of cyanobacteria, however, little has been evidenced on this aspect while their physiological responses were examined. We investigated the impacts of solar PAR and UVR on the growth, photosynthetic performance and morphology of the cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. PCC7120 while it was grown under three different solar radiation treatments: exposures to (a) constant low PAR (photosynthetic active radiation, 400-700 nm), (b) natural levels of solar radiation with and (c) without UV radiation (290-400 nm). When the cells were exposed to solar PAR or PAR+UVR, the photochemical efficiency was reduced by about 40% and 90%, respectively, on day one and recovered faster under the treatment without UVR over the following days. Solar UVR inhibited the growth up to 40%, reduced trichome length by up to 49% and depressed the differentiation of heterocysts. Negligible concentrations of UV-absorbing compounds were found even in the presence of UVR. During the first 2 d of exposure to natural levels of PAR, carotenoid concentrations increased but no prolonged increase was evident. Heterocyst formation was enhanced under elevated PAR levels that stimulated quantum yield and growth after an initial inhibition. Higher concentrations of carotenoids and a twofold increase in the carotenoid to chlorophyll a ratio provided protection from the high levels of solar PAR. Under radiation treatments with UVR the relatively greater decrease in chlorophyll a concentrations compared with the increase in carotenoids was responsible for the higher carotenoid: chlorophyll a ratio. Heterocyst formation was disrupted in the presence of solar UVR. However, the longer term impact of heterocyst disruption to the survival of Anabaena sp. requires further study.  相似文献

An improved spectrophotometric determination of uranium(VI) is proposed using 4-(2-pyridylazo)resorcinol(PAR) in the presence of benzyldimethylstearyltrimethylammonium chloride(BSTAC) as a cationic surfactant. The calibration graph is linear in the range of 0.3-60 microg/10 ml uranium(VI), measuring the absorbance at 550 nm. The reproducibility for 19.0 microg/10 ml uranium(VI) is 0.57%. The third-derivative method using the third-derivative distance (d(3)A/dlambda(3)) among lambda(1) 530 nm, lambda(3) 594 nm and lambda(2) 565 nm was also investigated.  相似文献

From June to September 2005, we carried out experiments to determine the ultraviolet radiation (UVR) -induced photoinhibition of summer phytoplankton assemblages from a coastal site of the South China Sea. Variability in taxonomic composition was determined throughout the summer, with a peak chlorophyll a (chl a approximately 20 microg chl a L(-1)) dominated by the diatom Skeletonema costatum that was detected early in the study period; the rest of the time samples were characterized by monads and flagellates, with low chl a values (1-5 chl a microg L(-1)). Surface water samples were placed in quartz tubes, inoculated with radiocarbon and exposed to solar radiation for 2-3 h to determine photosynthetic rates under three quality radiation treatments (i.e. PAB, 280-700 nm; PA, 320-700 nm and P, 400-700 nm) using different filters and under seven levels of ambient irradiance using neutral density screens (P vs E curves). UVR inhibition of samples exposed to maximum irradiance (i.e. at the surface) varied from -12.2% to 50%, while the daytime-integrated UVR-related photoinhibition in surface seawater varied from -62% to 7%. The effects of UVR on the photosynthetic parameters P(B)(max) and E(k) were also variable, but UV-B accounted for most of the observed variability. During sunny days, photosynthesis of microplankton (>20 microm) and piconanoplankton (<20 microm) were significantly inhibited by UVR (mostly by UV-B). However, during cloudy days, while piconanoplankton cells were still inhibited by UVR, microplankton cells used UVR (mostly UV-A) as the source of energy for photosynthesis, resulting in higher carbon fixation in samples exposed to UVR than the ones exposed only to photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). Our results indicate that size structure and cloudiness clearly condition the overall impact of UVR on phytoplankton photosynthesis in this tropical site of South China. In addition, model predictions for this area considering only PAR for primary production might have underestimated carbon fixation due to UVR contribution.  相似文献

The optical properties of the waters of five different stations, three located in the Messina Strait and two near the Strait (open sea), were analysed. Direct spectral measurements of the downward solar irradiance (290 - 800 nm) at different depths (0.5 m, 7 m, 10 m, 13 m, 20 m) were made using a cosine sensor connected to a spectroradiometer. Water samples were collected in the surface layer and their absorption spectra were analysed. The natural fluorescence profiles, along the water column, were determined using a fluorometer (SBE 911plus - Sea Teach). The spectral attenuation coefficient (K(lambda)), the variation of K(lambda) in different wavelength ranges (deltaK(deltalambda)), the wavelength corresponding to minimum value of K(lambda), the spectral depths of penetration of both 1% and 10% of the sub-surface irradiance values (P(lambda)), the depths of 1% of penetration of UVB, UVA and PAR, the depth ranges of the maxim concentration of Chl a and superficial CDOM were measured at each station. The maximum solar UVB penetration was about 65% of the photic zone and the maximum UVA penetration was nearly 100% (data of the Ionic sea station). Thus, a large part of the photic zone was exposed to UV radiation sufficient to cause a possible reduction in the photosynthetic activity of phytoplankton. The spectral penetration of solar radiation, especially UVB radiation, was significantly different in the three stations of the Strait with respect to the two stations studied in the open sea. This shows that variations in the spectral attenuation along the water column can be used as an indicator of properties of the water body.  相似文献

The impact of photodegradation and mixing processes on the optical properties of dissolved organic matter (DOM) was examined using a distribution of absorption spectral slopes and fluorescence measurements in two Argentine lakes. By examining the variability of the absorption spectral slopes throughout the ultraviolet and visible wavelengths, it was possible to determine which wavelength intervals were most sensitive to dominant loss processes. For DOM photodegradation, results show that increases in the absorption spectral slope between 265 and 305 nm were highly sensitive to increased exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation. A slightly larger wavelength range (265-340 nm) was found to be influenced when both mixing and photodegradation processes were considered, in terms DOM residence time, DOM absorption and UV diffuse attenuation coefficients. This same interval of spectral slopes (265-340 nm) was found to highly correlate with changes in fluorescence emission/excitation in wavelengths that are typically associated with terrestrial humic-like DOM. The identification of specific wavelength intervals, rather than the use of standard wavelength intervals or ratios, improved our ability to identify the dominant dissolved organic matter (humic-like) and major loss mechanisms (photodegradation) in these lakes.  相似文献

The role of solar UV radiation in the ecology of alpine lakes.   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10
Solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR, 290-400 nm) is a crucial environmental factor in alpine lakes because of the natural increase of the UVR flux with elevation and the high water transparency of these ecosystems. The ecological importance of UVR, however, has only recently been recognized. This review, examines the general features of alpine lakes regarding UVR, summarizes what is known about the role of solar UVR in the ecology of alpine lakes, and identifies future research directions. Unlike the pattern observed in most lowland lakes, variability of UV attenuation in alpine lakes is poorly explained by differences in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations, and depends mainly on optical characteristics (absorption) of the chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM). Within the water column of lakes with low DOC concentrations (0.2-0.4 mg l(-1)), UV attenuation is influenced by phytoplankton whose development at depth (i.e. the deep chlorophyll maximum) causes important changes in UV attenuation. Alpine aquatic organisms have developed a number of strategies to minimize UV damage. The widespread synthesis or bioaccumulation of different compounds that directly or indirectly absorb UV energy is one such strategy. Although most benthic and planktonic primary producers and crustacean zooplankton are well adapted to high intensities of solar radiation, heterotrophic protists, bacteria, and viruses seem to be particularly sensitive to UVR. Understanding the overall impact of UVR on alpine lakes would need to consider synergistic and antagonistic processes resulting from the pronounced climatic warming, which have the potential to modify the UV underwater climate and consequently the stress on aquatic organisms.  相似文献

Abstract— Action spectra for lethality of both stationary and exponentially growing cells of recombinationless (recA) mutants of Salmonella typhimurium and Escherichia coli were obtained. Maximum sensitivity was observed at 260nm which corresponds to the maximum absorbance of DNA. However, a shoulder occurred in the 280–300 nm range that departed significantly from the absorption spectrum of DNA. At wavelengths longer than 320nm, the shapes of inactivation curves departed significantly from those at wavelengths shorter than 320nm and survival curves at wavelengths longer than 320nm had a large shoulder. A small peak or shoulder occurred in the 330–340nm region of the action spectra. The special sensitivity of recA mutants to broad spectrum near-UV radiation may be due to synergistic effects of different wavelengths. Parallels between the inactivation of recA mutants and the induction of a photoproduct of l -tryptophan toxic for recA mutants (now known to be H2O2) suggest that H2O2 photoproduct from endogenous tryptophan may be involved in the high sensitivity of these strains to broad spectrum near-UV radiation.  相似文献

Photochemical switching has been studied of double-tailed phosphate amphiphiles containing azobenzene units in both tails in aqueous vesicular dispersions and in mixed vesicular systems with 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DOPC). Since the ease of switching depends on the strength of the bilayer packing, particular emphasis has been placed on the occurrence of H-aggregation in the hydrophobic core of the vesicles. UV-vis spectrometry was employed to monitor H-aggregation and showed how this process depends on the ionic strength and on the mode of preparation of the vesicles. Two types of H-aggregates were observed in mixed DOPC vesicles with 5 mol % of azobenzene phosphate: one with lambda(max) at around 300 nm and one with lambda(max) at 305-320 nm. Those with lambda(max) at 300 nm could not be trans-cis photoisomerized, whereas those with lambda(max) at 305-320 nm are more loosely packed and can be photochemically switched. The permeability of the vesicular bilayers, as probed with leakage experiments using calcein as a fluorescent probe, was examined as another measure for the strength of bilayer packing. Leakage occurred only for DOPC vesicles containing more than 20 mol % of azobenzenephosphate, irradiated with UV light to induce trans-cis photoisomerization. We contend that detailed information on bilayer packing will be of crucial importance for fine-tuning the lateral pressure in vesicular membranes with the ultimate aim to steer the opening and closing of mechanosensitive protein channels of large conductance.  相似文献

The tropical and subtropical oceans experience intense incident ultraviolet radiation (280–400 nm) while their water columns are thought to be highly transparent. This combination represents a high potential for harmful effects on organisms, yet only few reports on the UV penetration properties of oligotrophic tropical waters exist. Here, we present the pattern of UV attenuation over a wide latitudinal range of the oligotrophic Red Sea. We recorded spectroradiometer profiles of PAR and UV, together with chlorophyll‐a (Chl‐a) and light absorption by chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) to determine the contribution of phytoplankton and CDOM toward UV attenuation. Transparency to UV exhibited a distinct latitudinal gradient, with the lowest and highest diffuse attenuation coefficients at 313 nm (Kd (313)) of 0.130 m?1 and 0.357 m?1 observed at the northern coast off Duba, and in the south close to the Farasan islands, respectively. Phytoplankton and CDOM both modulated UV attenuation, but CDOM was found to be the key driver despite the lack of riverine inputs. We confirm that ultraviolet radiation can reach deeper into the Red Sea than previously described, which means its potential to act as a stressor and selective driver for Red Sea organisms may have been underestimated to date.  相似文献

We carried out experiments to evaluate seasonal changes in the impacts of UV radiation (UVR, 280–400 nm) on photosynthetic carbon fixation of phytoplankton assemblages. Surface water samples were obtained in the coastal area of the South China Sea, where chlorophyll a ranged 0.72–3.82 μg L−1. Assimilation numbers (photosynthetic carbon fixation rate per chl a) were significantly higher during summer 2005 than those in spring and winter 2004. The mean values obtained under photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) were 2.83 (spring 2004), 4.35 (winter 2004) and 7.29 μg C (μg chl a)−1 h−1 (summer 2005), respectively. The assimilation numbers under PAR + UVR were 1.58, 2.71 and 5.28 μg C (μg chl a)−1 h−1, for spring, winter and summer, respectively. UVR induced less inhibition of photosynthesis during summer 2005 than during the other seasons, in spite of the higher UVR during summer. The seasonal differences in the productivity and photosynthetic response to UV were mainly due to changes in water temperature, while irradiance and vertical mixing explained >80% of the observed variability. Our data suggest that previous studies in the SCS using UV-opaque vessels might have overestimated the phytoplankton production by about 80% in spring, 61% in winter and 38% in summer.  相似文献

Pure and peroxided PVC films were irradiated under monochromatic ultraviolet light between 300 and 400 nm. The degradation state of PVC is measured by means of carbonyl absorption in the infrared spectra and polyene content by UV spectroscopy. The initial rate of carbonyl formation depends on the wavelengths and oxidized impurities content. Peroxided PVC is oxidized faster than pure PVC with wavelengths above 320 nm. Two hazardous ranges of wavelengths have been detected: 300–320 and 350–370 nm. Good protection of PVC against UV radiation can be assured by the exclusion of wavelengths under 380 nm.  相似文献

An investigation into the influence of UV irradiation on elastin hydrolysates in the presence of collagen was carried out using UV-Vis spectroscopy and spectrofluorometry. It was found that the absorbance of elastin hydrolysates in solution increased during irradiation more than the absorbance of the elastin/collagen blend. The fluorescence of elastin hydrolysates was observed at 305nm and at 380nm after excitation at 270nm. For the elastin/collagen mixture in solution, fluorescence spectrum shows only one maximum at 305nm. UV irradiation caused fluorescence fading at 305nm. For irradiated elastin the fluorescence at 305nm decreased faster than for the irradiated elastin/collagen mixture. The maximum of the fluorescence peak was shifted for elastin by 4nm, whereas for the elastin/collagen blends the shift was only 1-2nm. All the obtained results point out the ability of mixing elastin and collagen, and suggest that the elastin/collagen mixture in solution is less sensitive to UV irradiation than elastin hydrolysates alone.  相似文献

As part of a wider study into the use of smartphones as solar ultraviolet radiation monitors, this article characterizes the ultraviolet A (UVA; 320–400 nm) response of a consumer complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS)‐based smartphone image sensor in a controlled laboratory environment. The CMOS image sensor in the camera possesses inherent sensitivity to UVA, and despite the attenuation due to the lens and neutral density and wavelength‐specific bandpass filters, the measured relative UVA irradiances relative to the incident irradiances range from 0.0065% at 380 nm to 0.0051% at 340 nm. In addition, the sensor demonstrates a predictable response to low‐intensity discrete UVA stimuli that can be modelled using the ratio of recorded digital values to the incident UVA irradiance for a given automatic exposure time, and resulting in measurement errors that are typically less than 5%. Our results support the idea that smartphones can be used for scientific monitoring of UVA radiation.  相似文献

A field experiment was conducted on the early embryos of the green sea urchin Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis at different depths in the Gulf of Maine (GOM) to assess the effects of UV radiation (UVR: 300–400 nm) on survivorship, oxidative stress and DNA damage. Embryos experimentally placed at 1 m were exposed to UVB (300–320 nm) where a significant decrease in survivorship was observed as well as significant increases in the activity of the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase and DNA damage. DNA damage includes both cyclobutane pyrimidine dimer photoproducts from direct exposure to UVA (320–400 nm) and indirect DNA damage associated with the production of reactive oxygen species. All embryos had equivalent concentrations of the UVR-absorbing compounds known as mycosporine-like amino acids and despite the fact that these compounds absorb primarily in the UVA portion of the spectrum they did not provide protection for embryos from DNA damage in the field at depths less than 5 m. DNA damage and survivorship of green sea urchin embryos in the GOM was directly related to the optical properties of the water column and the differential attenuation of UVB and UVA wavelengths.  相似文献
