The effect of the nonlinear terms on bifurcation behaviors of limit cycles of a simplified railway wheelset model is investigated. At first, the stable equilibrium state loses its stability via a Hopf bifurcation. The bifurcation curve is divided into a supercritical branch and a subcritical one by a generalized Hopf point, which plays a key role in determining the occurrence of flange contact and derailment of high-speed railway vehicles, and the occurrence of this critical situation is an important decision-making criteria for design parameters. Secondly, bifurcations of limit cycles are discussed by comparing the bifurcation behavior of cycles for two different nonlinear parameters. Unlike local Hopf bifurcation analysis based on a single bifurcation parameter in most papers, global bifurcation analysis of limit cycles based on two bifurcation parameters is investigated, simultaneously. It is shown that changing nonlinear parameter terms can affect bifurcation types of cycles and division of parameter domains. In particular, near the branch points of cycles, two symmetrical limit cycles are created by a pitchfork bifurcation and then two symmetrical cycles both undergo a period-doubling bifurcation to form two stable period-two cycles. Around the resonant points, period orbits can make several turns, whose number of turns corresponds to the ratio of resonance. Thirdly, near the Neimark–Sacker bifurcation of cycles, a stable torus is created by a supercritical Neimark–Sacker bifurcation, which shows that the orbit of the model exhibits modulated oscillations with two frequencies near the limit cycle. These results demonstrate that nonlinear parameter terms can produce very complex global bifurcation phenomena and make obvious effects on possible hunting motions even though a simple railway wheelset model is concerned.

We discuss how matrix-free/timestepper algorithms can efficiently be used with dynamic non-Newtonian fluid mechanics simulators in performing systematic stability/bifurcation analysis. The timestepper approach to bifurcation analysis of large-scale systems is applied to the plane Poiseuille flow of an Oldroyd-B fluid with non-monotonic slip at the wall, in order to further investigate a mechanism of extrusion instability based on the combination of viscoelasticity and non-monotonic slip. Due to the non-monotonicity of the slip equation the resulting steady-state flow curve is non-monotonic and unstable steady states appear in the negative-slope regime. It has been known that self-sustained oscillations of the pressure gradient are obtained when an unstable steady state is perturbed [M.M. Fyrillas, G.C. Georgiou, D. Vlassopoulos, S.G. Hatzikiriakos, A mechanism for extrusion instabilities in polymer melts, Polymer Eng. Sci. 39 (1999) 2498–2504].Treating the simulator of a distributed parameter model describing the dynamics of the above flow as an input–output “black-box” timestepper of the state variables, stable and unstable branches of both equilibrium and periodic oscillating solutions are computed and their stability is examined. It is shown for the first time how equilibrium solutions lose stability to oscillating ones through a subcritical Hopf bifurcation point which generates a branch of unstable limit cycles and how the stable periodic solutions lose their stability through a critical point which marks the onset of the unstable limit cycles. This implicates the coexistence of stable equilibria with stable and unstable periodic solutions in a narrow range of volumetric flow rates.  相似文献

We investigate Hopf bifurcations in a delayed Nicholson’s blowflies equation of neutral type, derived from the Gurtin–MacCamy model. A key parameter that determines the direction of the Hopf bifurcation and the stability of the bifurcating periodic solutions is derived. Global extension of local Hopf branches is established by combining a global Hopf bifurcation theorem with a Bendixson criterion for higher dimensional ordinary differential equations. We show that a branch of slowly varying periodic solutions and a branch of fast oscillating periodic solutions coexist for all large delays.  相似文献

Stable bifurcating solutions may appear in an autonomous time-delayed nonlinear oscillator having quadratic nonlinearity after the trivial equilibrium loses its stability via two-to-one resonant Hopf bifurcations. For the corresponding non-autonomous time-delayed nonlinear oscillator, the dynamic interactions between the periodic excitation and the stable bifurcating solutions can induce resonant behaviour in the forced response when the forcing frequency and the frequencies of Hopf bifurcations satisfy certain relationships. Under hard excitations, the forced response of the time-delayed nonlinear oscillator can exhibit three types of secondary resonances, which are super-harmonic resonance at half the lower Hopf bifurcation frequency, sub-harmonic resonance at two times the higher Hopf bifurcation frequency and additive resonance at the sum of two Hopf bifurcation frequencies. With the help of centre manifold theorem and the method of multiple scales, the secondary resonance response of the time-delayed nonlinear oscillator following two-to-one resonant Hopf bifurcations is studied based on a set of four averaged equations for the amplitudes and phases of the free-oscillation terms, which are obtained from the reduced four-dimensional ordinary differential equations for the flow on the centre manifold. The first-order approximate solutions and the nonlinear algebraic equations for the amplitudes and phases of the free-oscillation terms in the steady state solutions are derived for three secondary resonances. Frequency-response curves, time trajectories, phase portraits and Poincare sections are numerically obtained to show the secondary resonance response. Analytical results are found to be in good agreement with those of direct numerical integrations.  相似文献

The route to chaos for moderate Prandtl number gravity driven convection in porous media is analysed by using Adomian's decomposition method which provides an accurate analytical solution in terms of infinite power series. The practical need to evaluate numerical values from the infinite power series, the consequent series truncation, and the practical procedure to accomplish this task, transform the otherwise analytical results into a computational solution achieved up to a desired but finite accuracy. The solution shows a transition to chaos via a period doubling sequence of bifurcations at a Rayleigh number value far beyond the critical value associated with the loss of stability of the convection steady solution. This result is extremely distinct from the sequence of events leading to chaos in low Prandtl number convection in porous media, where a sudden transition from steady convection to chaos associated with an homoclinic explosion occurs in the neighbourhood of the critical Rayleigh number (unless mentioned otherwise by 'the critical Rayleigh number' we mean the value associated with the loss of stability of the convection steady solution). In the present case of moderate Prandtl number convection the homoclinic explosion leads to a transition from steady convection to a period-2 periodic solution in the neighbourhood of the critical Rayleigh number. This occurs at a slightly sub-critical value of Rayleigh number via a transition associated with a period-1 limit cycle which seem to belong to the sub-critical Hopf bifurcation around the point where the convection steady solution looses its stability. The different regimes are analysed and periodic windows within the chaotic regime are identified. The significance of including a time derivative term in Darcy's equation when wave phenomena are being investigated becomes evident from the results.  相似文献

The congestion control algorithm, which has dynamic adaptations at both user ends and link ends, with heterogeneous delays is considered and analyzed. Some general stability criteria involving the delays and the system parameters are derived by generalized Nyquist criteria. Furthermore, by choosing one of the delays as the bifurcation parameter, and when the delay exceeds a critical value, a limit cycle emerges via a Hopf bifurcation. Resonant double Hopf bifurcation is also found to occur in this model. An efficient perturbation-incremental method is presented to study the delay-induced resonant double Hopf bifurcation. For the bifurcation parameter close to a double Hopf point, the approximate expressions of the periodic solutions are updated iteratively by use of the perturbation-incremental method. Simulation results have verified and demonstrated the correctness of the theoretical results.  相似文献

The trivial equilibrium of a two-degree-of-freedom autonomous system may become unstable via a Hopf bifurcation of multiplicity two and give rise to oscillatory bifurcating solutions, due to presence of a time delay in the linear and nonlinear terms. The effect of external excitations on the dynamic behaviour of the corresponding non-autonomous system, after the Hopf bifurcation, is investigated based on the behaviour of solutions to the four-dimensional system of ordinary differential equations. The interaction between the Hopf bifurcating solutions and the high level excitations may induce a non-resonant or secondary resonance response, depending on the ratio of the frequency of bifurcating periodic motion to the frequency of external excitation. The first-order approximate periodic solutions for the non-resonant and super-harmonic resonance response are found to be in good agreement with those obtained by direct numerical integration of the delay differential equation. It is found that the non-resonant response may be either periodic or quasi-periodic. It is shown that the super-harmonic resonance response may exhibit periodic and quasi-periodic motions as well as a co-existence of two or three stable motions.  相似文献

The Ananthakrishna model, seeking to explain the phenomenon of repeated yielding of materials, is studied with or without periodic perturbation. For the unforced model, Hopf bifurcation, degenerate Hopf bifurcation and saddle-node bifurcation are detected. For the periodically forced model, two elementary periodic mechanisms are analyzed corresponding to five bifurcation cases of the unforced one. Rich dynamical behaviors arise, including stable and unstable periodic solutions of different periods, quasi-periodic solutions, chaos through torus destruction or cascade of period doublings. Moreover, even small change of a parameter can lead to bifurcation of different periodic solutions. Finally, according to the forced Ananthakrishna model, four types of stress–time curves are simulated, which can well interpret various experimental phenomena of repeated yielding.  相似文献

The bifurcations and chaotic dynamics of parametrically and externally excited suspended cables are investigated in this paper. The equations of motion governing such systems contain quadratic and cubic nonlinearities, which may result in two-to-one and one-to-one internal resonances. The Galerkin procedure is introduced to simplify the governing equations of motion to ordinary differential equations with two-degree-of-freedom. The case of one-to-one internal resonance between the modes of suspended cables, primary resonant excitation, and principal parametric excitation of suspended cables is considered. Using the method of multiple scales, a parametrically and externally excited system is transformed to the averaged equations. A pseudo arclength scheme is used to trace the branches of the equilibrium solutions and an investigation of the eigenvalues of the Jacobian matrix is used to assess their stability. The equilibrium solutions experience pitchfork, saddle-node, and Hopf bifurcations. A detailed bifurcation analysis of the dynamic (periodic and chaotic) solutions of the averaged equations is presented. Five branches of dynamic solutions are found. Three of these branches that emerge from two Hopf bifurcations and the other two are isolated. The two Hopf bifurcation points, one is supercritical Hopf bifurcation point and another is primary Hopf bifurcation point. The limit cycles undergo symmetry-breaking, cyclic-fold, and period-doubling bifurcations, whereas the chaotic attractors undergo attractor-merging, boundary crises. Simultaneous occurrence of the limit cycle and chaotic attractors, homoclinic orbits, homoclinic explosions and hyperchaos are also observed.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider a classical van der Pol equation with a general delayed feedback. Firstly, by analyzing the associated characteristic equation, we derive a set of parameter values where the Hopf bifurcation occurs. Secondly, in the case of the standard Hopf bifurcation, the stability of bifurcating periodic solutions and bifurcation direction are determined by applying the normal form theorem and the center manifold theorem. Finally, a generalized Hopf bifurcation corresponding to non-semisimple double imaginary eigenvalues (case of 1:1 resonance) is analyzed by using a normal form approach.  相似文献

The weakly nonlinear resonant response of an orthogonal double pendulum to planar harmonic motions of the point of suspension is investigated. The two pendulums in the double pendulum are confined to two orthogonal planes. For nearly equal length of the two pendulums, the system exhibits 1:1 internal resonance. The method of averaging is used to derive a set of four first order autonomous differential equations in the amplitude and phase variables. Constant solutions of the amplitude and phase equations are studied as a function of physical parameters of interest using the local bifurcation theory. It is shown that, for excitation restricted in either plane, there may be as many as six pitchfork bifurcation points at which the nonplanar solutions bifurcate from the planar solutions. These nonplanar motions can become unstable by a saddle-node or a Hopf bifurcation, giving rise to a new branch of constant solutions or limit cycle solutions, respectively. The dynamics of the amplitude equations in parameter regions of the Hopf bifurcations is then explored using direct numerical integration. The results indicate a complicated amplitude dynamics including multiple limit cycle solutions, period-doubling route to chaos, and sudden disappearance of chaotic attractors.  相似文献

Low Prandtl number convection in porous media is relevant to modern applications of transport phenomena in porous media such as the process of solidification of binary alloys. The transition from steady convection to chaos is analysed by using Adomian's decomposition method to obtain an analytical solution in terms of infinite power series. The practical need to evaluate the solution and obtain numerical values from the infinite power series, the consequent series truncation, and the practical procedure to accomplish this task, transform the analytical results into a computational solution evaluated up to a finite accuracy. The solution shows a transition from steady convection to chaos via a Hopf bifurcation producing a 'solitary limit cycle which may be associated with an homoclinic explosion. This occurs at a slightly subcritical value of Rayleigh number, the critical value being associated with the loss of linear stability of the steady convection solution. Periodic windows within the broad band of parameter regime where the chaotic solution persists are identified and analysed. It is evident that the further transition from chaos to a high Rayleigh number periodic convection occurs via a period halving sequence of bifurcations.  相似文献

Coupled, forced response of an axially moving strip with internal resonance   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In this paper, the forced response of a non-linear axially moving strip with coupled transverse and longitudinal motions is studied. In particular, the response of the system is examined in the neighborhood of a 3 : 1 internal resonance between the first two transverse modes. The equations of motion are derived using the Hamilton's Principle and discretized by the Galerkin's method. First, with the longitudinal motion neglected, the forced transverse response is investigated by applying the method of multiple scales to assess the effects of speed and the internal resonance. In general, the speed is shown to affect each mode differently. The internal resonance results in the constant solutions having transition to instability of both a saddle-node type and a Hopf bifurcation. In the region where the Hopf bifurcation occurs, steady-state periodic motion does not exist. Instead the stable motion is amplitude- and phase-modulated. When the coupled system with longitudinal motion is examined with internal resonance, results reveal that the modulated motions disappear. Thus, the presence of the longitudinal motion has a stabilizing effect on the transverse modes in the Hopf bifurcation region. The second longitudinal mode is shown to drift due primarily to a direct excitation of the first transverse mode. Effects of the longitudinal motion on the transverse response are shown to be significant for speeds both away from and close to the critical speed.  相似文献

The dynamic behavior of a one-degree-of-freedom, parametrically excited nonlinear system is investigated. The Galerkin method is applied to the principal and fundamental parameteric resonance of the system. The continuation method is used to study the change of harmonic oscillation with respect to the variation of excitation frequency. The numerical stability analysis of the trivial solution is carried out and the stable and unstable regions of the trivial solution are given. They are found to agree with the results obtained by the analytical method of Galerkin. Periodic solutions are traced and the coexistence of multi-periodic solutions is observed With the change of excitation frequency the large amplitude periodic-2 oscillation is found to be in the same closed branch with the small amplitude periodic-2 solution. In addition, the bifurcation pattern of the trivial solution is found to change from subcritical Hopf bifurcation into supercritical Hopf bifurcation with the increase of excitation amplitude. Combined with the conventional numerical integration method, new complex dynamic behavior is detected.  相似文献

Analysis of the cutting tool on a lathe   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We use a systematic approach combining a path-following scheme, the method of multiple scales, the method of harmonic balance, Floquet theory, and numerical simulations to investigate the local and global dynamics and stability of cutting tool on a lathe due to the regenerative mechanism. First, we use the method of multiple scales to determine the normal form of the Hopf bifurcation at all of the stability boundaries and calculate the limit cycles generated by the bifurcation. Then, we use a combination of a path-following scheme and the method of harmonic balance to continue the branch of generated limit cycles. Thus, we calculate small- and large-amplitude limit cycles and ascertain their stability using Floquet theory. We validate these results using numerical simulations. Then, we search for isolated branches of large-amplitude solutions coexisting with the linearly stable trivial solution. We use all of the results to generate bifurcation diagrams consisting of multiple large-amplitude stable and unstable branches of limit cycles coexisting with the trivial response, indicating three regions of operation, as in the experimental observations. Then, we investigate bifurcation control using cubic-velocity feedback and show that the unconditionally stable region can be expanded at the expense of the conditionally stable region.  相似文献

This paper presents a detailed analysis on the dynamics of a delayed oscillator with negative damping and delayed feedback control. Firstly, a linear stability analysis for the trivial equilibrium is given. Then, the direction of Hopf bifurcation and stability of periodic solutions bifurcating from trivial equilibrium are determined by using the normal form theory and center manifold theorem. It shows that with properly chosen delay and gain in the delayed feedback path, this controlled delayed system may have stable equilibrium, or periodic solutions, or quasi-periodic solutions, or coexisting stable solutions. In addition, the controlled system may exhibit period-doubling bifurcation which eventually leads to chaos. Finally, some new interesting phenomena, such as the coexistence of periodic orbits and chaotic attractors, have been observed. The results indicate that delayed feedback control can make systems with state delay produce more complicated dynamics.  相似文献

We study the appearance and stability of spatiotemporal periodic patterns like phase-locked oscillations, mirror-reflecting waves, standing waves, in-phase or antiphase oscillations, and coexistence of multiple patterns, in a ring of bidirectionally delay coupled oscillators. Hopf bifurcation, Hopf–Hopf bifurcation, and the equivariant Hopf bifurcation are studied in the viewpoint of normal forms obtained by using the method of multiple scales which is a kind of perturbation technique, thus a clear bifurcation scenario is depicted. We find time delay significantly affects the dynamics and induces rich spatiotemporal patterns. With the help of the unfolding system near Hopf–Hopf bifurcation, it is confirmed in some regions two kinds of stable oscillations may coexist. These phenomena are shown for the delay coupled limit cycle oscillators as well as for the delay coupled chaotic Hindmarsh–Rose neurons.  相似文献

A new perturbation method for a weakly nonlinear two-dimensional discrete-time dynamical system is presented. The proposed technique generalizes the asymptotic perturbation method that is valid for continuous-time systems and detects periodic or almost-periodic orbits and their stability. Two equations for the amplitude and the phase of solutions are derived and their fixed points correspond to limit cycles for the starting nonlinear map. The method is applied to various nonlinear (autonomous or not) two-dimensional maps. For the autonomous maps we derive the conditions for the appearance of a supercritical Hopf bifurcation and predict the characteristics of the corresponding limit cycle. For the nonautonomous maps we show amplitude-response and frequency-response curves. Under appropriate conditions, we demonstrate the occurrence of saddle-node bifurcations of cycles and of jumps and hysteresis effects in the system response (cusp catastrophe). Modulated motion can be observed for very low values of the external excitation and an infinite-period bifurcation occurs if the external excitation increases. Analytic approximate solutions are in good agreement with numerically obtained solutions.  相似文献

In this paper, from the view of stability and chaos control, we investigate the Rossler chaotic system with delayed feedback. At first, we consider the stability of one of the fixed points, verifying that Hopf bifurcation occurs as delay crosses some critical values. Then, for determining the stability and direction of Hopf bifurcation we derive explicit formulae by using the normal-form theory and center manifold theorem. By designing appropriate feedback strength and delay, one of the unstable equilibria of the Rossler chaotic system can be controlled to be stable, or stable bifurcating periodic solutions occur at the neighborhood of the equilibrium. Finally, some numerical simulations are carried out to support the analytic results.  相似文献
