The present paper explores the derivation of an alternative nonlinear eddy viscosity formulation based on Reynolds stress anisotropy and its implementation to numerical ocean models. This formulation takes into account the vorticity in addition to the mean strain rate. The proposed formulation does not include the stability function method which is a common approach in eddy viscosity calculations used in the present state-of-the-art numerical ocean models. Instead, it depends on the second invariant of anisotropy. Initially, the performance of the formulation is checked through a simple channel flow simulation. Consequently for model calibration, an idealised experiment of mixed-layer entrainment into stably stratified flow has been simulated and compared to empirical data. For sensitivity studies related to shear and stable stratification, concept of steady-state Richardson number is applied for homogeneous shear layer. Finally, the performance of the new formulation is tested by implementing it into one-dimensional General Ocean Turbulence Model. Furthermore, a realistic oceanic test case of a storm has been investigated considering different physical processes for the Fladenground Experiment (FLEX’ 76) in the northern North Sea and the results have been compared to the measured data. The main results signify that the overall performance of the nonlinear eddy viscosity model with a different value of steady-state Richardson number is as good as the Mellor–Yamada model in terms of predictability, and the eddy viscosity and diffusivity profiles follow the principle of law of the wall. Additionally, the present formulation does not require computing the stability functions and the ease of implementation into numerical ocean models gives the present formulation an upper hand over the existing formulations in the field of turbulence modelling in oceanography.  相似文献

In this study, the Reynolds-averaged Navier--Stokes (RANS) method is employed to simulate the flow within and over an intersection model with three kinds of $k$--$\varepsilon$ turbulence closure schemes, namely, standard model, renormalization group (RNG) model and realizable $k$--$\varepsilon$model. The comparison between the simulated and observed flow fields shows that the RANS simulation with all the three turbulence models cannot completely and accurately reproduce the observed flow field in all details. A detailed comparison between the predicted profiles of wind velocities and the measured data shows that the realizable $k$--$\varepsilon$ model is the best one among the three turbulence closure models in general. However, the extent to which the improvement is achieved by the realizable $k$--$\varepsilon$ model is still not enough to completely and accurately describe the turbulent flow in a relatively complex environment.  相似文献

The question of the origins of nonexponential relaxation is addressed in terms of the probabilistic approach to relaxation. The interconnection between two differently rooted probabilistic models, i.e., between the parallel channel and the correlated cluster models, is presented. We show that clearly different probabilistic origins yield in both approaches a well-defined class of universally valid two-power-law responses with the stretched-exponential and exponential decay laws as special cases. The equivalence of both models indicates that variations in the local environment of the relaxing configurational units (parallel channel relaxation) can provide a basis for self-similar relaxation dynamics without the need for hierarchically constrained dynamics (correlated clusters relaxation).  相似文献

We consider the relaxation dynamics of two quantum levels coupled to a stochastic bath. We emphasize that even if the matrix elements of the fluctuating Hamiltonian are Gaussian, a second-order cumulant truncation is not exact. For various stochastic models, including the case of a spin-1/2 particle in a fluctuating magnetic field, we calculate 1/T 1, the population relaxation rate, and 1/T 2, the phase relaxation rate, up to fourth order in perturbation theory. We show that unlike the commonly accepted second-order result that 1/T 21/2T 1, when fourth-order terms are included, in some instances 1/T 2<1/2T 1.  相似文献

We analyze the impact of discretization errors on the performance of the Smagorinsky model in large eddy simulations (LES). To avoid difficulties related to solid boundaries, we focus on decaying homogeneous turbulence. It is shown that two numerical implementations of the model in the same finite volume code lead to significantly different results in terms of kinetic energy decay, time evolutions of the viscous dissipation and kinetic energy spectra. In comparison with spectral LES results, excellent predictions are however obtained with a novel formulation of the model derived from the discrete Navier–Stokes equations. We also highlight the effect of discretization errors on the measurement of physical quantities that involve scales close to the grid resolution.  相似文献

Abstract

The validity of previously derived formulae expressing the activation energies for self-diffusion and ‘order–order’ relaxations in intermetallics in terms of the activation energies of more elementary processes involved in the phenomena is tested by simulation of particular binary systems. The simulation results were in good agreement with the tested formulae. It was shown that the relationship between the activation energies observed in triple-defect B2-ordering binaries, where the value of the activation energy for order–order relaxations is substantially lower than that for self-diffusion, does not hold in the case of non-triple-defect binaries. Using the tested formulae, the origin of the effect was elucidated and attributed to the atomistic origin of the tendency for triple-defect disordering.  相似文献

The design of a new, truly robust multigrid framework for the solution of steady-state Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations with two-equation turbulence models is presented. While the mean-flow equations and the turbulence model equations are advanced in time in a loosely-coupled manner, their multigrid cycling is strongly coupled (FC-MG). Thanks to the loosely-coupled approach, the unconditionally positive-convergent implicit time-integration scheme for two-equation turbulence models (UPC) is used. An improvement to the basic UPC scheme convergence characteristics is developed and its extension within the multigrid method is proposed. The resulting novel FC-MG-UPC algorithm is nearly free of artificial stabilizing techniques, leading to increased multigrid efficiency. To demonstrate the robustness of the proposed algorithm, it is applied to linear and non-linear two-equation turbulence models. Numerical experiments are conducted, simulating separated flow about the NACA4412 airfoil, transonic flow about the RAE2822 airfoil and internal flow through a plane asymmetric diffuser. Results obtained from numerical simulations demonstrate the strong consistency and case-independence of the method.  相似文献

While it has long been a practice to place spires near the inlet of a wind tunnel to quickly develop a turbulent boundary layer with similarities to an atmospheric boundary layer, this has not been the case for creating turbulent boundary layer inflow in large eddy simulations (LESs) of turbulent flows. We carry out LES with the curvilinear immersed boundary method to simulate the flow in a wind tunnel with a series of spires in order to investigate the feasibility of numerically developing inflow conditions from a precursory spire LES and assessing the similarities of the turbulence statistics to those of an atmospheric boundary layer. The simulated mean velocity field demonstrates that a turbulent boundary layer with height equal to the spire height develops very quickly, within five spire heights downstream. The major attribute of using spires for precursory simulations is the spatially evolving coherent structures that form downstream of the spires offering a range of length scales at both the vertical and streamwise directions allowing multiple turbulent inflow conditions to be extracted from a single simulation. While the distribution of length scales far from the spires resembles an atmospheric boundary layer, some turbulence statistics have some significant differences.  相似文献

Interaction of shock or rarefaction waves with turbulent mixtures is challenging for turbulence models. A recent article has shown how results from linear interaction analysis (LIA) can be synthesised into transfer matrices relating upstream and downstream second-order turbulent correlations. These results have been obtained in the limit of axisymmetric weakly turbulent mixture. The current article is devoted to the evaluation of three augmented Reynolds stress models (RSMs) for the same kinds of interaction with weakly turbulent mixtures. Corrections aimed at improving the compatibility with LIA are finally proposed for one of these RSMs.  相似文献

We analyse the performance of the explicit algebraic subgrid-scale (SGS) stress model (EASSM) in large eddy simulation (LES) of plane channel flow and the flow in a channel with streamwise periodic hill-shaped constrictions (periodic hill flow) which induce separation. The LESs are performed with the Code_Saturne which is an unstructured collocated finite volume solver with a second-order spatial discretisation suitable for LES of incompressible flow in complex geometries. At first, performance of the EASSM in LES of plane channel flow at two different resolutions using the Code_Saturne and a pseudo-spectral method is analysed. It is observed that the EASSM predictions of the mean velocity and Reynolds stresses are more accurate than the conventional dynamic Smagorinsky model (DSM). The results with the pseudo-spectral method were, in general, more accurate. In the second step, LES with the EASSM of flow separation in the periodic hill flow is compared to LES with the DSM, no SGS model and a highly resolved LES data using the DSM. Results show that the mean velocity profiles, the friction and pressure coefficients, the length and shape of the recirculation bubble, as well as the Reynolds stresses are considerably better predicted by the EASSM than the DSM and the no SGS model simulations. It was also observed that in some parts of the domain, the resolved strain-rate and SGS shear stress have the same sign. The DSM cannot produce a correct SGS stress in this case, in contrast to the EASSM.  相似文献

Photonic crystals (PCs) have many potential applications because of their ability to control light-wave propagation. We have investigated the electromagnetic wave propagation inside an elliptic rod PC slab by means of finite-difference time-domain simulations. The band structure of the PC composed of elliptic rod in the square and triangular lattices is studied by solving Maxwell's equations using the plane wave expansion method. Numerical simulations show that the refractive angle can be tuned greatly by rotating the directors of elliptic rod in the PC slab. Furthermore, an optical switch based on elliptic rod PC structures with nematic liquid crystals was proposed. In the on/off switching system, the partial band gap can be controlled when the normalized operation frequency is 0.28. The modulation induced by liquid crystals created a sharp switching in the photonic devices. Such a mechanism of negative refraction PCs should open up a new application for designing components in photonic integrated circuits.  相似文献

In this paper, we present an alternative approach for the turbulence modelling in the single-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) framework by treating the turbulence term as an extra forcing term, in addition to the traditional approach of modifying the relaxation time. We compare these two different approaches and their mixture in large-eddy simulation (LES) of three-dimensional decaying isotropic homogenous turbulence using the Smagorinsky model and the mixed similarity model. When the LES was conducted using the Smagorinsky model, where the Boussinesq eddy-viscosity approximation is adopted, the results showed that these three different implementations are equivalent. However, when the mixed similarity model is adopted, which is beyond the Boussinesq eddy-viscosity approximation, our results showed that an equivalent eddy-viscosity will lead to errors, while the forcing approach is more straightforward and accurate. This provides an alternative and more general framework of simulation of turbulence with models in LBM, especially when the Boussinesq eddy-viscosity approximation is invalid.  相似文献

We present fully dynamic simulations of heavy ion collisions at RHIC energies within the perturbative QCD-based partonic transport model BAMPS, focusing on the simultaneous investigation of jet-quenching and elliptic flow. The model consistently features elastic and inelastic 2↔323 processes, the latter being based on the Gunion-Bertsch matrix element. We discuss first attempts to extend the model to include light quark degrees of freedom and study the energy loss of high energy gluons and quarks in a static partonic medium. The difference between gluons and quarks in inelastic processes is found to be weaker than expected from color factors, due to a self-quenching effect associated with a cut-off modeling the LPM effect.  相似文献

Possible errors in the widely used 1972–1973 macroscopic original-electric-modulus formalism are identified, corrected, and their consequences considered. These errors include misidentification of the high-frequency-limiting dielectric constant arising entirely from mobile charges, εC1∞, and the failure to treat properly the high-frequency-limiting dielectric constant associated with bulk dipolar and vibrionic effects, εD∞. It is shown that the corrected modulus formalism, which describes dispersed mobile-charge effects, is isomorphic in form with the 1973 microscopic continuous-time random-walk hopping model of Scher and Lax after a minor but significant correction is made to the latter's response function. This firmly established correction, which nevertheless could not be determined by Kronig–Kramers transformation, involved inversion of synthetic frequency-response data to determine a distribution of relaxation times and led to extension of the real part of the Scher–Lax dielectric response to higher frequencies by the inclusion of a nonzero limiting value. This isomorphism, along with excellent data fitting using the corrected modulus formalism, suggests that since the Scher–Lax stochastic model involves no explicit Coulomb interactions, cation motion in glasses is dominated by short-range interactions. Finally, two very-high-frequency processes, which each lead to a limiting plateau value of the real part of the conductivity at sufficiently high frequencies, are discussed in detail.  相似文献
