This paper develops a new radial super-efficiency data envelopment analysis (DEA) model, which allows input–output variables to take both negative and positive values. Compared with existing DEA models capable of dealing with negative data, the proposed model can rank the efficient DMUs and is feasible no matter whether the input–output data are non-negative or not. It successfully addresses the infeasibility issue of both the conventional radial super-efficiency DEA model and the Nerlove–Luenberger super-efficiency DEA model under the assumption of variable returns to scale. Moreover, it can project each DMU onto the super-efficiency frontier along a suitable direction and never leads to worse target inputs or outputs than the original ones for inefficient DMUs. Additional advantages of the proposed model include monotonicity, units invariance and output translation invariance. Two numerical examples demonstrate the practicality and superiority of the new model.  相似文献

Data Envelopment Analysis is used to determine the relative efficiency of Decision Making Units as the ratio of weighted sum of outputs by weighted sum of inputs. To accomplish the purpose, a DEA model calculates the weights of inputs and outputs of each DMU individually so that the highest efficiency can be estimated. Thus, the present study suggests an innovative method using a common set of weights leading to solving a linear programming problem. The method determines the efficiency score of all DMUs and rank them too.  相似文献

Data envelopment analysis (DEA) measures the production performance of decision-making units (DMUs) which consume multiple inputs and produce multiple outputs. Although DEA has become a very popular method of performance measure, it still suffers from some shortcomings. For instance, one of its drawbacks is that multiple solutions exist in the linear programming solutions of efficient DMUs. The obtained weight set is just one of the many optimal weight sets that are available. Then why use this weight set instead of the others especially when this weight set is used for cross-evaluation? Another weakness of DEA is that extremely diverse or unusual values of some input or output weights might be obtained for DMUs under assessment. Zero input and output weights are not uncommon in DEA. The main objective of this paper is to develop a new methodology which applies discriminant analysis, super-efficiency DEA model and mixed-integer linear programming to choose suitable weight sets to be used in computing cross-evaluation. An advantage of this new method is that each obtained weight set can reflect the relative strengths of the efficient DMU under consideration. Moreover, the method also attempts to preserve the original classificatory result of DEA, and in addition this method produces much less zero weights than DEA in our computational results.  相似文献

It is well known that super-efficiency data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach can be infeasible under the condition of variable returns to scale (VRS). By extending of the work of Chen (2005), the current study develops a two-stage process for calculating super-efficiency scores regardless whether the standard VRS super-efficiency mode is feasible or not. The proposed approach examines whether the standard VRS super-efficiency DEA model is infeasible. When the model is feasible, our approach yields super-efficiency scores that are identical to those arising from the original model. For efficient DMUs that are infeasible under the super-efficiency model, our approach yields super-efficiency scores that characterize input savings and/or output surpluses. The current study also shows that infeasibility may imply that an efficient DMU does not exhibit super-efficiency in inputs or outputs. When infeasibility occurs, it can be necessary that (i) both inputs and outputs be decreased to reach the frontier formed by the remaining DMUs under the input-orientation and (ii) both inputs and outputs be increased to reach the frontier formed by the remaining DMUs under the output-orientation. The newly developed approach is illustrated with numerical examples.  相似文献

The slacks-based measure (SBM) can incorporate input and output slacks that would otherwise be neglected in the classical DEA model. In parallel, the super-efficiency model for SBM (S-SBM) has been developed for the purpose of ranking SBM efficient decision-making units (DMUs). When implementing SBM in conjunction with S-SBM, however, several issues can arise. First, unlike the standard super-efficiency model, S-SBM can only solve for super-efficiency scores but not SBM scores. Second, the S-SBM model may result in weakly efficient reference points. Third, the S-SBM and SBM scores for certain DMUs may be discontinuous with a perturbation to their inputs and outputs, making it hard to interpret and justify the scores in applications and the efficiency scores may be sensitive to small changes/errors in data. Due to this discontinuity, the S-SBM model may overestimate the super-efficiency score. This paper extends the existing SBM approaches and develops a joint model (J-SBM) that addresses the above issues; namely, the J-SBM model can (1) simultaneously compute SBM scores for inefficient DMUs and super-efficiency for efficient DMUs, (2) guarantee the reference points generated by the joint model are Pareto-efficient, and (3) the J-SBM scores of a firm are continuous in the input and output space. Interestingly, the radial DEA efficiency and super-efficiency scores for a DMU are continuous in the input–output space. The J-SBM model combines the merits of the radial and SBM models (i.e., continuity and Pareto-efficiency).  相似文献

It is important to consider the decision making unit (DMU)'s or decision maker's preference over the potential adjustments of various inputs and outputs when data envelopment analysis (DEA) is employed. On the basis of the so-called Russell measure, this paper develops some weighted non-radial CCR models by specifying a proper set of ‘preference weights’ that reflect the relative degree of desirability of the potential adjustments of current input or output levels. These input or output adjustments can be either less or greater than one; that is, the approach enables certain inputs actually to be increased, or certain outputs actually to be decreased. It is shown that the preference structure prescribes fixed weights (virtual multiplier bounds) or regions that invalidate some virtual multipliers and hence it generates preferred (efficient) input and output targets for each DMU. In addition to providing the preferred target, the approach gives a scalar efficiency score for each DMU to secure comparability. It is also shown how specific cases of our approach handle non-controllable factors in DEA and measure allocative and technical efficiency. Finally, the methodology is applied with the industrial performance of 14 open coastal cities and four special economic zones in 1991 in China. As applied here, the DEA/preference structure model refines the original DEA model's result and eliminates apparently efficient DMUs.  相似文献

Data envelopment analysis (DEA), considering the best condition for each decision making unit (DMU), assesses the relative efficiency and partitions DMUs into two sets: efficient and inefficient. Practically, in traditional DEA models more than one efficient DMU are recognized and these models cannot rank efficient DMUs. Some studies have been carried out aiming at ranking efficient DMUs, although in some cases only discrimination of the most efficient unit is desirable. Furthermore, several investigations have been done for finding the most CCR-efficient DMU. The basic idea of the majority of them is to introduce an integrated model which achieves an optimal common set of weights (CSW). These weights help us identify the most efficient unit in an identical condition.  相似文献

A modified super-efficiency DEA model for infeasibility   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The super-efficiency data envelopment analysis (DEA) model is obtained when a decision making unit (DMU) under evaluation is excluded from the reference set. This model provides for a measure of stability of the “efficient” status for frontier DMUs. Under the assumption of variable returns to scale (VRS), the super efficiency model can be infeasible for some efficient DMUs, specifically those at the extremities of the frontier. The current study develops an approach to overcome infeasibility issues. It is shown that when the model is feasible, our approach yields super-efficiency scores that are equivalent to those arising from the original model. For efficient DMUs that are infeasible under the super-efficiency model, our approach yields optimal solutions and scores that characterize the extent of super-efficiency in both inputs and outputs. The newly developed approach is illustrated with two real world data sets.  相似文献

In this paper we discuss the question: among a group of decision making units (DMUs), if a DMU changes some of its input (output) levels, to what extent should the unit change outputs (inputs) such that its efficiency index remains unchanged? In order to solve this question we propose a solving method based on Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and Multiple Objective Linear Programming (MOLP). In our suggested method, the increase of some inputs (outputs) and the decrease due to some of the other inputs (outputs) are taken into account at the same time, while the other offered methods do not consider the increase and the decrease of the various inputs (outputs) simultaneously. Furthermore, existing models employ a MOLP for the inefficient DMUs and a linear programming for weakly efficient DMUs, while we propose a MOLP which estimates input/output levels, regardless of the efficiency or inefficiency of the DMU. On the other hand, we show that the current models may fail in a special case, whereas our model overcomes this flaw. Our method is immediately applicable to solve practical problems.  相似文献

This paper discusses and reviews the use of super-efficiency approach in data envelopment analysis (DEA) sensitivity analyses. It is shown that super-efficiency score can be decomposed into two data perturbation components of a particular test frontier decision making unit (DMU) and the remaining DMUs. As a result, DEA sensitivity analysis can be done in (1) a general situation where data for a test DMU and data for the remaining DMUs are allowed to vary simultaneously and unequally and (2) the worst-case scenario where the efficiency of the test DMU is deteriorating while the efficiencies of the other DMUs are improving. The sensitivity analysis approach developed in this paper can be applied to DMUs on the entire frontier and to all basic DEA models. Necessary and sufficient conditions for preserving a DMU’s efficiency classification are developed when various data changes are applied to all DMUs. Possible infeasibility of super-efficiency DEA models is only associated with extreme-efficient DMUs and indicates efficiency stability to data perturbations in all DMUs.  相似文献

Efficiency could be not only the ratio of weighted sum of outputs to that of inputs but also that of weighted sum of inputs to that of outputs. When the previous efficiency measures the best relative efficiency within the range of no more than one, the decision-making units (DMUs) who get the optimum value of one perform best among all the DMUs. If the previous efficiency is measured within the range of no less than one, the DMUs who get the optimum value of one perform worst among all the DMUs. When the later efficiency is measured within the range of no more than one, the DMUs who get the optimum value of one perform worst among all the DMUs. If the later efficiency is measured within the range of no less than one, the DMUs who get the optimum value of one perform best among all the DMUs. This paper mainly studies an interval DEA model with later efficiency, in which efficiency is measured within the range of an interval, whose upper bound is set to one and the lower bound is determined by introducing a virtual ideal DMU, whose performance is definitely superior to any DMUs. The efficiencies, obtained from interval DEA model, turn out to be all intervals and are referred to as interval efficiencies, which combine the best and the worst relative efficiency in a reasonable manner to give an overall assessment of performances for all DMUs. Assessor's preference information on input and output weights is also incorporated into interval DEA model reasonably and conveniently. Through an example, some differences are found from the ranking results obtained from interval DEA model and bounded DEA model using the Hurwicz criterion approach to rank the interval efficiencies.  相似文献

The concept of efficiency in data envelopment analysis (DEA) is defined as weighted sum of outputs/weighted sum of inputs. In order to calculate the maximum efficiency score, each decision making unit (DMU)’s inputs and outputs are assigned to different weights. Hence, the classical DEA allows the weight flexibility. Therefore, even if they are important, the inputs or outputs of some DMUs can be assigned zero (0) weights. Thus, these inputs or outputs are neglected in the evaluation. Also, some DMUs may be defined as efficient even if they are inefficient. This situation leads to unrealistic results. Also to eliminate the problem of weight flexibility, weight restrictions are made in DEA. In our study, we proposed a new model which has not been published in the literature. We describe it as the restricted data envelopment analysis ((ARIII(COR))) model with correlation coefficients. The aim for developing this new model, is to take into account the relations between variables using correlation coefficients. Also, these relations were added as constraints to the CCR and BCC models. For this purpose, the correlation coefficients were used in the restrictions of input–output each one alone and their combination together. Inputs and outputs are related to the degree of correlation between each other in the production. Previous studies did not take into account the relationship between inputs/outputs variables. So, only with expert opinions or an objective method, weight restrictions have been made. In our study, the weights for input and output variables were determined, according to the correlations between input and output variables. The proposed new method is different from other methods in the literature, because the efficiency scores were calculated at the level of correlations between the input and/or output variables.  相似文献

This paper proposes a new super-efficiency model when some factors (inputs/outputs) are negative. The proposed model employs the RDM model (Portela et al, 2004) for ranking decision-making units (DMUs). Our model ranks the DMUs and determines the type of efficiency for each DMU, simultaneously  相似文献

Cross-efficiency evaluation is a commonly used approach for ranking decision-making units (DMUs) in data envelopment analysis (DEA). The weights used in the cross-efficiency evaluation may sometimes differ significantly among the inputs and outputs. This paper proposes some alternative DEA models to minimize the virtual disparity in the cross-efficiency evaluation. The proposed DEA models determine the input and output weights of each DMU in a neutral way without being aggressive or benevolent to the other DMUs. Numerical examples are tested to show the validity and effectiveness of the proposed DEA models and illustrate their significant role in reducing the number of zero weights.  相似文献

Super-efficiency data envelopment analysis (DEA) model is obtained when a decision making unit (DMU) under evaluation is excluded from the reference set. Because of the possible infeasibility of super-efficiency DEA model, the use of super-efficiency DEA model has been restricted to the situations where constant returns to scale (CRS) are assumed. It is shown that one of the input-oriented and output-oriented super-efficiency DEA models must be feasible for a any efficient DMU under evaluation if the variable returns to scale (VRS) frontier consists of increasing, constant, and decreasing returns to scale DMUs. We use both input- and output-oriented super-efficiency models to fully characterize the super-efficiency. When super-efficiency is used as an efficiency stability measure, infeasibility means the highest super-efficiency (stability). If super-efficiency is interpreted as input saving or output surplus achieved by a specific efficient DMU, infeasibility does not necessary mean the highest super-efficiency.  相似文献

We provide an alternative framework for solving data envelopment analysis (DEA) models which, in comparison with the standard linear programming (LP) based approach that solves one LP for each decision making unit (DMU), delivers much more information. By projecting out all the variables which are common to all LP runs, we obtain a formula into which we can substitute the inputs and outputs of each DMU in turn in order to obtain its efficiency number and all possible primal and dual optimal solutions. The method of projection, which we use, is Fourier–Motzkin (F–M) elimination. This provides us with the finite number of extreme rays of the elimination cone. These rays give the dual multipliers which can be interpreted as weights which will apply to the inputs and outputs for particular DMUs. As the approach provides all the extreme rays of the cone, multiple sets of weights, when they exist, are explicitly provided. Several applications are presented. It is shown that the output from the F–M method improves on existing methods of (i) establishing the returns to scale status of each DMU, (ii) calculating cross-efficiencies and (iii) dealing with weight flexibility. The method also demonstrates that the same weightings will apply to all DMUs having the same comparators. In addition it is possible to construct the skeleton of the efficient frontier of efficient DMUs. Finally, our experiments clearly indicate that the extra computational burden is not excessive for most practical problems.  相似文献

Data envelopment analysis (DEA) evaluates the performance of decision making units (DMUs). When DEA models are used to calculate efficiency of DMUs, a number of them may have the equal efficiency 1. In order to choose a winner among DEA efficient candidates, some methods have been proposed. But most of these methods are not able to rank non-extreme efficient DMUs. Since, the researches performed about ranking of non-extreme efficient units are very limited, incomplete and with some difficulties, we are going to develop a new method to rank these DMUs in this paper. Therefore, we suppose that DMU o is a non-extreme efficient under evaluating DMU. In continue, by using “Representation Theorem”, DMU o can be represented as a convex combination of extreme efficient DMUs. So, we expect the performance of DMU o be similar to the performance of convex combination of these extreme efficient DMUs. Consequently, the ranking score of DMU o is calculated as a convex combination of ranking scores of these extreme efficient DMUs. So, the rank of this unit will be determined.

While traditional data envelopment analysis (DEA) models assess the relative efficiency of similar, independent decision making units (DMUs) centralized DEA models aim at reallocating inputs and outputs among the units setting new input and output targets for each one. This system point of view is appropriate when the DMUs belong to a common organization that allocates their inputs and appropriates their outputs. This intraorganizational perspective opens up the possibility that greater technical efficiency for the organization as a whole might be achieved by closing down some of the existing DMUs. In this paper, we present three centralized DEA models that take advantage of this possibility. Although these models involve some binary variables, we present efficient solution approaches based on Linear Programming. We also present some numerical results of the proposed models for a small problem from the literature.  相似文献
