In the presence of the dipole-dipole interaction, we have studied a possible dielectric catastrophe in photonic band gap materials doped with an ensemble of four-level nanoparticles. It is found that the dielectric constant of the system has a singularity when the resonance energy lies within the bands. This phenomenon is known as the dielectric catastrophe. It is also found that this phenomenon depends on the strength of the dipole-dipole interaction. 相似文献

We present time-resolved emission experiments of semiconductor quantum dots in silicon 3D inverse-woodpile photonic band gap crystals. A systematic study is made of crystals with a range of pore radii to tune the band gap relative to the emission frequency. The decay rates averaged over all dipole orientations are inhibited by a factor of 10 in the photonic band gap and enhanced up to 2× outside the gap, in agreement with theory. We discuss the effects of spatial inhomogeneity, nonradiative decay, and transition dipole orientations on the observed inhibition in the band gap. 相似文献

We present detailed analytical and numerical studies of nonlinear wave interaction processes in one-dimensional (1D) photonic band gap (PBG) materials with a Kerr nonlinearity. We demonstrate that some of these processes provide efficient mechanisms for dynamically controlling so-called gap-solitons. We derive analytical expressions that accurately determine the phase shifts experienced by nonlinear waves for a large class of non-resonant interaction processes. We also present comprehensive numerical studies of inelastic interactions, and show that rather distinct regimes of interaction exist. The predicted effects should be experimentally observable, and can be utilized for probing the existence and parameters of gap solitons. Our results are directly applicable to other nonlinear periodic structures such as Bose–Einstein condensates in optical lattices. 相似文献

Electromagnetic wave propagation in one-dimensional plasma photonic crystal (PPC) made of alternate thin layers of two materials namely plasma and dielectric materials is theoretically studied. Dispersion relation is obtained. Group velocity, effective group index, reflectivity and superluminal behavior have been studied. The study of the reflectivity plot shows that the designed structure works as a perfect reflector/mirror in a certain range of frequency. Left-right and up-down symmetries (and flip-flop) are observed when we study the variation of group velocity with frequency. Abnormal behavior of group velocity (negative) inside the PPC structure creates the superluminal propagation of electromagnetic waves. The marked existence of symmetries may be exploited for directional switching in optical circuits. 相似文献

We show a dual-beam-reflection phenomenon for a Gaussian beam illuminating a hybrid structure of a dielectric waveguide and photonic crystal (WG-PC) inside the photonic band gap by numerical simulations. One reflection beam has a giant negative lateral shift, but the other has a positive lateral shift. The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations show that this phenomenon has a time delay effect and comes from the leaky surface mode of the hybrid structure. Field profile of the leaky mode demonstrates a strong localized stationary field in the higher dielectric medium. Furthermore, the maximum lateral shift is almost two times of the waist of the incident beam. 相似文献

The entanglement of a two-level atom and its radiation field near the edge of a photonic band gap is studied by using the quantum entropy. Unlike the free space case, there is a steady-state entanglement between the atom and its spontaneous emission field even when the atomic transition frequency lies outside the band gap. Moreover, the degree of entanglement, which is due to the formation of atom–photon bound dressed state, depends on the detuning of the atomic transition frequency from the photonic band edge and can be controlled by a controllable photonic band gap crystal. 相似文献

We introduce a class of optical media based on adiabatically modulated, dielectric-only, and potentially extremely low-loss, photonic crystals (PC). The media we describe represent a generalization of the eikonal limit of transformation optics (TO). The basis of the concept is the possibility to fit some equal frequency surfaces of certain PCs with elliptic surfaces, allowing them to mimic the dispersion relation of light in anisotropic effective media. PC cloaks and other TO devices operating at visible wavelengths can be constructed from optically transparent substances such as glasses, whose attenuation coefficient can be as small as 10 dB/km, suggesting the TO design methodology can be applied to the development of optical devices not limited by the losses inherent to metal-based, passive metamaterials. 相似文献

We calculate the lifetime distribution function of an assembly of polarized atoms in two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystals (PCs) at different polarization orientations of atomic dipole moments. We reveal a switching effect of atomic spontaneous emission (SE) and find a significant change of atomic lifetime, up to a factor of 33, by tuning the polarized orientation of the atoms. These observations suggest that the tuning of the polarized orientation of atoms provides a new way for the effective control of atomic SE processes in 2D PCs. 相似文献

Properties of the angular gap in a one-dimensional photonic band gap structure containing single negative materials are investigated. This gap forms at oblique incidence due to the total internal reflection into air when the Snell's law breaks down. Its lower edge occurs at the frequency where the refractive index of one or both layers of the structure approaches zero. This gap is found to be highly sensitive to the incident angle and the polarization of the incident light, but is not affected by the thickness ratio of the layers. It is also shown that the electric field gets extremely enhanced at the lower edge of this gap for transverse magnetic polarization. Composite right/left-handed transmission lines with lumped element series capacitors and shunt inductors are used to experimentally realize the one-dimensional photonic crystals composed of single-negative metamaterials. The simulated and experimental results show that a special photonic band gap corresponding to zero-effective-phase (zero-φeff) may appear in the microwave regime. In contrast to the Bragg gap, by changing the length ratio of the two component materials, the width and depth of the zero-φeff gap can be conveniently adjusted while keeping the center frequency constant. Furthermore, the zero-φeff gap vanishes when both the phase-matching and impedance-matching conditions are satisfied simultaneously. These transmission line structures provide a good way for realizing microwave devices based on the zero-φeff gap. 相似文献

The band structure of three-dimensional cubic approximants of a photonic quasicrystal has been determined by numerical calculation. The approximants of different orders appear to have large, almost isotropic, band gaps in a wide range of relative permittivity values.
