A novel multidentate amine grafted on silica gel and magnetic microsphere was prepared. Its chemical structure was confirmed by C13 NMR, XPS and FTIR, and the nitrogen content was determined by elemental analysis. It was also used as a ligand for CuCl and successfully catalyzed the atom transfer radical addition of both carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) to methyl methacrylate and methyl trichloroacetate to styrene, repeatedly. The conversion and purity of the product were determined through gas chromatography and 1H NMR, respectively. The immobilized copper catalyst complex was also used in atom transfer radical polymerization of styrene initiated by 1,1,1,3‐tetrachloro‐3‐phenylpropane and methyl methacrylate initiated by methyl 2‐methyl‐2,4,4,4‐tetrachlorobutyrate, respectively. Although the polymerization took place successfully, it did not proceed in a controlled fashion. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Simple mixing of an atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) mixture with zinc powder was demonstrated to result in rapid decolorizing of the solution and precipitation of elemental copper, using small amounts of silica gel as seeding material. The experiments revealed that the chemical reduction of copper by wetted zinc powder (i.e., 0.325 g/mmol copper) is fast and completed within less than 5 min. UV spectra of the filtered polymer solution showed no any trace of copper. Terminal bromoalkyl groups of the polymers in the ATRP solution were determined to be unchanged by short‐term contact with zinc powder at room temperature and a nearly complete reductive dehalogenation takes place only after 24 h of interaction, as evidenced by reaction of elemental zinc with a model compound, ethyl bromoacetate. Indeed, poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) sample (Mn: 7900, polydispersity index: 1.09) isolated from ATRP mixture after the copper removal a by short contact with zinc powder (i.e., 15 min) was determined “still living” as confirmed by chain extension with styrene, ethyl acrylate, and t‐butyl acrylate monomers to give block copolymers. The presence of acetic acid was demonstrated to accelerate reductive dehalogenation of PMMA end‐groups by zinc and yields nonliving polymer within 2 h. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Simplified electrochemical atom transfer radical polymerization (seATRP) using CuIIN-propyl pyridineimine complexes (CuII(NPPI)2) is reported for the first time. In aqueous solution, using oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (OEGMA), standard electrolysis conditions yield POEGMA with good control over molecular weight distribution (Đm < 1.35). Interestingly, the polymerizations are not under complete electrochemical control, as monomer conversion continues when electrolysis is halted. Alternatively, it is shown that the extent and rate of polymerization depends upon an initial period of electrolysis. Thus, it is proposed that seATRP using CuII(NPPI)2 follows an electrochemically-triggered, rather than electrochemically mediated, ATRP mechanism, which distinguishes them from other CuIIL complexes that have been previously reported in the literature.

Simplified electrochemical atom transfer radical polymerization (seATRP) using CuII-pyridineimine complexes is reported and follows a previously unreported electrochemically triggered mechanism.  相似文献

Micro- and nanopatterns of thermosensitive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) brush on gold substrate were prepared by using chemical lithography combined with surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization. Self-assembled monolayers of 4'-nitro-1, 1'-biphenyl-4-thiol were structured by chemical lithography which produced cross-linked 4'-amino-1,1'-biphenyl-4-thiol monolayer within a nitro-terminated matrix. The terminal amino groups in monolayers were bounded with the surface initiator bromoisobutyryl bromide. After polymerization, the smallest size can reach to 70-nm line width and dots. The thermosensitivity of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) brushes is demonstrated by contact angle measurement and fluid atomic force microscopy. This fabrication approach allows creating spatially defined polymer patterns and provides a simple and versatile method to construct complex micro- and nanopatterned polymer brushes with spatial and topographic control in a single step.  相似文献

The continuous development of more active and stable catalysts in atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) has increasingly required a thorough knowledge of concurrent electron transfer reactions that can affect catalyst performance. Special attention is provided in this short review to such processes, including disproportionation, most pronounced in Cu-mediated ATRP, the reduction of radicals to carbanions or oxidation to carbocations, and radical coordination to the metal catalyst resulting in the interplay of controlled radical polymerization mechanisms.  相似文献

A hybrid polymerization system that combines the fast reaction kinetics of conventional free radical polymerization and the control of molecular weight and distribution afforded by ATRP has been developed. High‐free radical initiator concentrations in the range of 0.1–0.2 M were used in combination with a low concentration of ATRP catalyst. Conversions higher than 90% were achieved with ATRP catalyst concentrations of less than 20 ppm within 2 h for the hybrid ATRP system as compared with ATRPs where achieving such conversions would take up to 24 h. These reaction conditions lead to living polymerizations where polymer molecular weight increases linearly with monomer conversion. As in living polymerization and despite the fast rates and low ATRP catalyst concentrations, the polydispersity of the produced polymer remained below 1.30. Chain extension experiments from a synthesized macroinitiator were successful, which demonstrate the living characteristics of the hybrid ATRP process. Catalyst concentrations as low as 16 ppm were found to effectively mediate the growth of over 100 polymer chains per catalytic center, whereas at the same time negating the need for post polymerization purification given the low‐catalyst concentration. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A detailed investigation of the polymerization of allyl methacrylate, a typical unsymmetrical divinyl compound containing two types of vinyl groups, methacryloyl and allyl, with quite different reactivities, was performed with atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Homopolymerizations were carried out in bulk, with ethyl‐2‐bromoisobutyrate as the initiator and with copper halide (CuX, where X is Cl or Br) with N,N,N,N,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine as the catalyst system. Kinetic studies demonstrated that during the early stages of the polymerization, the ATRP process proceeded in a living manner with a low and constant radical concentration. However, as the reaction continued, the increased diffusion resistance restricted the mobility of the catalyst system and interrupted the equilibrium between the growing radicals and dormant species. The obtained poly(allyl methacrylate)s (PAMAs) were characterized with Fourier transform infrared, 1H NMR, and size exclusion chromatography techniques. The dependence of both the gel point conversion and molecular characteristics of the PAMA prepolymers on different experimental parameters, such as the initiator concentration, polymerization temperature, and type of halide used as the catalyst, was analyzed. These real gel points were compared with the ones calculated according to Gordon's equation under the tentative assumption of equal reactivity for the two types of vinyl groups. Moreover, the microstructure of the prepolymers was the same as that exhibited by those homopolymers prepared by conventional free‐radical polymerization; the fraction of syndiotactic arrangements increased as the reaction temperature was lowered. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Acrylic polymers, including poly(methyl methacrylate), poly(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl methacrylate), poly( N,N'-dimethyaminoethyl methacrylate), and poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) were grafted from flat nickel and copper surfaces through surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). For the nickel system, there was a linear relationship between polymer layer thickness and monomer conversion or molecular weight of "free" polymers. The thickness of the polymer brush films was greater than 80 nm after 6 h of reaction time. The grafting density was estimated to be 0.40 chains/nm2. The "living" chain ends of grafted polymers were still active and initiated the growth of a second block of polymer. Block copolymer brushes with different block sequences were successfully prepared. The experimental surface chemical compositions as measured by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy agreed very well with their theoretical values. Water contact angle measurements further confirmed the successful grafting of polymers from nickel and copper surfaces. The surface morphologies of all samples were studied by atomic force microscopy. This study provided a novel approach to prepare stable functional polymer coatings on reactive metal surfaces.  相似文献

The quantitative synthesis of tertiary amine-functionalized polymers by atom transfer radical polymerization is reported. Tertiary amine-functionalized polystyrene was prepared with the adduct of 1-(bromoethyl)benzene with 1-(4-dimethyl-aminophenyl)-1-phenylethylene as an initiator in the atom transfer radical polymerization of styrene in the presence of a copper (I) bromide/2,2′-bipyridyl catalyst system. The polymerization proceeded via a controlled free-radical polymerization process to afford quantitative yields of the corresponding tertiary amine-functionalized polystyrene with predictable number-average molecular weights (1600–4400), narrow molecular weight distributions (1.09–1.31), and an initiator efficiency of 0.95. The polymerization process was monitored by gas chromatographic analysis. The tertiary amine-functionalized polymers were characterized by thin-layer chromatography, size exclusion chromatography, potentiometry, and spectroscopy. All experimental evidence was consistent with quantitative functionalization via the 1,1-diphenylethylene derivative. Polymerization kinetic measurements showed that the polymerization reaction followed first-order-rate kinetics with respect to monomer consumption and that the number-average molecular weight increased linearly with monomer conversion. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Living atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of 4-acetoxystyrene ( 1 ), a protected 4-vinylphenol, leading to poly(4-acetoxystyrene) with well-defined molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution was carried out in bulk with α,α′-dibromoxylene( 2 )/CuBr/2,2-bipyridine(bpy) as initiating system. A linear n versus monomer conversion plot was found in good accordance with the theoretical line, indicating 100% initiating efficiency. The polymerization is first order in respect to monomer up to about 70% monomer conversion. Deviations from linearity at higher conversion in the first order plot are due to physical effects, i.e., to the increase of the viscosity of the reaction medium. The resulting 1-bromo-1-phenylethyl-telechelic poly(4-acetoxystyrene) ( 3 ) is a precursor of the hydrophilic poly(4-vinylphenol) and a potential new macroinitiator.  相似文献

A stable nitroxyl radical functionalized with an initiating group for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), 4‐(2‐bromo‐2‐methylpropionyloxy)‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl‐1‐piperidinyloxy (Br‐TEMPO), was synthesized by the reaction of 4‐hydroxyl‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl‐1‐piperidinyloxy with 2‐bromo‐2‐methylpropionyl bromide. Stable free radical polymerization of styrene was then carried out using a conventional thermal initiator, dibenzoyl peroxide, along with Br‐TEMPO. The obtained polystyrene had an active bromine atom for ATRP at the ω‐end of the chain and was used as the macroinitiator for ATRP of methyl acrylate and ethyl acrylate to prepare block copolymers. The molecular weights of the resulting block copolymers at different monomer conversions shifted to higher molecular weights and increased with monomer conversion. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Effect of residual copper on stability of molecular brushes with poly(n-butyl acrylate) (PBA) side chains was studied. The brushes were prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using the grafting-from approach. Although the copper concentration was decreased down to below ten ppm levels by passing through alumina column, further removal was required to prevent crosslinking reactions. Further removal was performed by dialysis or precipitation.  相似文献

Nickel‐mediated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and iron‐mediated reverse ATRP were applied to the living radical graft polymerization of methyl methacrylate onto solid high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) films modified with 2,2,2‐tribromoethanol and benzophenone, respectively. The number‐average molecular weight (Mn) of the free poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) produced simultaneously during grafting grew with the monomer conversion. The weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight ratio (Mw/Mn) was small (<1.4), indicating a controlled polymerization. The grafting ratio showed a linear relation with Mn of the free PMMA for both reaction systems. With the same characteristics assumed for both free and graft PMMA, the grafting was controlled, and the increase in grafting ratio was ascribed to the growing chain length of the graft PMMA. In fact, Mn and Mw/Mn of the grafted PMMA chains cleaved from the polyethylene substrate were only slightly larger than those of the free PMMA chains, and this was confirmed in the system of nickel‐mediated ATRP. An appropriate period of UV preirradiation controlled the amount of initiation groups introduced to the HDPE film modified with benzophenone. The grafting ratio increased linearly with the preirradiation time. The graft polymerizations for both reaction systems proceeded in a controlled fashion. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) generally requires a catalyst/initiator molar ratio of 0.1 to 1 and catalyst/monomer molar ratio of 0.001 to 0.01 (i.e., catalyst concentration: 1000-10,000 ppm versus monomer). Herein, we report a new copper-based complex CuBr/N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)ethylenediamine (TPEN) as a versatile and highly active catalyst for acrylic, methacrylic, and styrenic monomers. The catalyst mediated ATRP at a catalyst/initiator molar ratio of 0.005 and produced polymers with well-controlled molecular weights and low polydispersities. ATRP occurred even at a catalyst/initiator molar ratio as low as 0.001 with copper concentration in the produced polymers as low as 6-8 ppm (catalyst/monomer molar ratio = 10(-5)). The catalyst structures were studied by X-ray diffraction and NMR spectroscopy. The activator CuIBr/TPEN existed in solution as binuclear and mononuclear complexes in equilibrium but as a binuclear complex in its single crystals. The deactivator CuIIBr2/TPEN complex was mononuclear. High stability and appropriate KATRP (ATRP equilibrium constant) were found crucial for the catalyst working under high dilution or in coordinating solvents/monomers. This provides guidance for further design of highly active ATRP catalysts.  相似文献
