A systematic quantum chemical investigation on the electronic, geometric and energetic properties of Au(n)V clusters with n = 1-14 in both neutral and anionic states is performed using BP86/cc-pVTZ-PP calculations. Most clusters having an even number of electrons prefer a high spin state. For odd-electron systems, a quartet state is consistently favoured as the ground state up to Au(8)V. The larger sized Au(10)V, Au(12)V and Au(14)V prefer a doublet state. The clusters prefer 2D geometries up to Au(8)V involving a weak charge transfer. The larger systems bear 3D conformations with a more effective electron transfer from Au to V. The lowest-energy structure of a size Au(n)V is built upon the most stable form of Au(n-1)V. During the growth, V is endohedrally doped in order to maximize its coordination numbers and augment the charge transfer. Energetic properties, including the binding energies, embedding energies and second-order energy differences, show that the presence of a V atom enhances considerably the thermodynamic stability of odd-numbered gold clusters but reduces that of even-numbered systems. The atomic shape has an apparently more important effect on the clusters stability than the electronic structure. Especially, if both atomic shape and electronic condition are satisfied, the resulting cluster becomes particularly stable such as the anion Au(12)V(-), which can thus combine with the cation Au(+) to form a superatomic molecule of the type [Au(12)V]Au. Numerous lower-lying electronic states of these clusters are very close in energy, in such a way that DFT computations cannot clearly establish their ground electronic states. Calculated results demonstrate the existence of structural isomers with comparable energy content for several species including Au(9)V, Au(10)V, Au(13)V and Au(14)V.  相似文献

We have obtained the ground state and the equilibrium geometries of Au(n) (-) and Au(n-1)Cu(-) in the size range of n=13-19. We have used first principles density functional theory within plane wave and Gaussian basis set methods. For each of the cluster we have obtained at least 100 distinct isomers. The anions of gold clusters undergo two structural transformations, the first one from flat cage to hollow cage and the second one from hollow cage to pyramidal structure. The Cu doped clusters do not show any flat cage structures as the ground state. The copper doped systems evolve from a general 3D structure to hollow cage with Cu trapped inside the cage at n=16 and then to pyramidal structure at n=19. The introduction of copper atom enhances the binding energy per atom as compared to gold cluster anions.  相似文献

Using density functional theory calculations, we compared four kinds of possible structural motifs of the medium-sized Aun (n = 21-28) clusters, i.e., fcc-like, double-layered flat, tubular cage, and close-packed. Our results show strong competition between those structural motifs in the medium-sized gold clusters. Aun (n = 21-23) adopt fcc-like structure owing to the high stability of tetrahedral Au20. A structural transition from fcc-like to tubular occurs at Au24, and the tubular motif continues at Au27 and Au28. Meanwhile, a double-layered flat structure was found at Au25, and a pyramid-based structure at Au26. The relationship between electronic properties and cluster geometry was also discussed.  相似文献

We performed a global-minimum search for low-lying neutral clusters (Au(n)) in the size range of n=15-19 by means of basin-hopping method coupled with density functional theory calculation. Leading candidates for the lowest-energy clusters are identified, including four for Au(15), two for Au(16), three for Au(17), five for Au(18), and one for Au(19). For Au(15) and Au(16) we find that the shell-like flat-cage structures dominate the population of low-lying clusters, while for Au(17) and Au(18) spherical-like hollow-cage structures dominate the low-lying population. The transition from flat-cage to hollow-cage structure is at Au(17) for neutral gold clusters, in contrast to the anion counterparts for which the structural transition is at Au(16) (-) [S. Bulusu et al., Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 103, 8362 (2006)]. Moreover, the structural transition from hollow-cage to pyramidal structure occurs at Au(19). The lowest-energy hollow-cage structure of Au(17) (with C(2v) point-group symmetry) shows distinct stability, either in neutral or in anionic form. The distinct stability of the hollow-cage Au(17) calls for the possibility of synthesizing highly stable core/shell bimetallic clusters M@Au(17) (M=group I metal elements).  相似文献

The density functional method with relativistic effective core potential has been employed to investigate systematically the geometrical structures, relative stabilities, growth-pattern behaviors, and electronic properties of small bimetallic M(2)Au(n) (M = Ag, Cu; n = 1-10) and pure gold Au(n) (n ≤ 12) clusters. The optimized geometries reveal that M(2) substituted Au(n+2) clusters and one Au atom capped M(2)Au(n-1) structures are dominant growth patterns of the stable alloyed M(2)Au(n) clusters. The calculated averaged atomic binding energies, fragmentation energies, and the second-order difference of energies as a function of the cluster size exhibit a pronounced even-odd alternation phenomenon. The analytic results exhibit that the planar structure Ag(2)Au(4) and Cu(2)Au(2) isomers are the most stable geometries of Ag(2)Au(n) and Cu(2)Au(n) clusters, respectively. In addition, the HOMO-LUMO gaps, charge transfers, chemical hardnesses and polarizabilities have been analyzed and compared further.  相似文献

Low-energy structures are found on the potential energy surfaces of the neutral, cationic, and anionic gold clusters Au(5< or = n < or =9)Z (Z=0,+/-1) and on the neutral potential energy surface of Au(9). These structures provide insights on the two to three dimensional (2D-->3D) transition in small neutral and charged gold clusters. It is demonstrated that the size threshold for the 2D-3D coexistence is lower for cationic than neutral gold clusters: the 2D-3D coexistence develops for Au(5) (+) and Au(7) (+) on the cationic potential energy surfaces while only for Au(9) on the neutral. Two metastable long-lived dianions of gold clusters are also reported.  相似文献

Small gold clusters (<1 nm) protected by a glutathione (GSH) monolayer were fractionated into six components by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and their chemical compositions were investigated by electrospray ionization mass spectroscopy. The results demonstrate isolation of a series of magic-numbered gold clusters, Au18(SG)11, Au21(SG)12, Au25+/-1(SG)14+/-1, Au28(SG)16, Au32(SG)18, and Au39(SG)23. Their optical absorption spectra are highly structured with clear absorption onsets, which shift toward higher energies with reduction of the core size. These molecular-like gold clusters exhibit visible photoluminescence. The results reported herein provide helpful guidelines or starting points for further experimental and theoretical studies on structures, stabilities, and optical properties of monolayer-protected gold clusters.  相似文献

Using a cluster model, we investigated the similarities and differences in chemical activity and the magnetic properties of Sc(n) clusters (n = 2-13) and their oxides, Sc(n)O, toward CO molecule adsorption via a spin-polarized density functional theory approach. The Sc(n) and Sc(n)O clusters have similar chemical activity at small sizes of n = 2-10, whereas remarkable differences are observed at large sizes of n = 11-13. More interestingly, different magnetic responses are found in the Sc(n) and Sc(n)O clusters with the presence of CO molecule: The magnetic moment is attenuated significantly for Sc(n) with n = 2, 4, 12, and 13, whereas for Sc(n)O, it is enhanced at n = 4 and 13 and is reduced for n = 7, 8, 10, and 11. In particular, the magnetic moment remarkably increases from 7 μ(B) of Sc(13)O to 13 μ(B) of Sc(13)OCO, whereas it reduces from 19 μ(B) of Sc(13) to 5 μ(B) of Sc(13)CO.  相似文献

Experimental and theoretical studies based on mass spectrometry, collision-induced dissociation, and ab initio calculations are performed on the formation and stability of FeO(n)(+) clusters, as well as on their structural, electronic, and magnetic properties. In the mass spectra, clusters with an even number of oxygen atoms show increased stability, most prominently for FeO(10)(+). The extra stability of this cluster is confirmed by measurements of fragmentation cross sections through crossed molecular beam experiments. In addition, the calculations indicate a structural phase transition at this size, and most importantly, the FeO(n)(+) clusters show unique magnetic features, exhibiting isoenergetic low-spin (LS) and high-spin (HS) ground states. In the LS state, the magnetic moments of the O atoms adopt an antiferromagnetic alignment with respect to the magnetic moment of Fe(+), whereas in the HS state, the alignment is ferromagnetic. FeO(10)(+) is the largest thermodynamically stable complex, with the highest magnetic moment among the FeO(n)(+) clusters (13 μ(B) in HS).  相似文献

First-principle density functional theory is used for studying the anion gold clusters doped with magnesium atom. By performing geometry optimizations, the equilibrium geometries, relative stabilities, and electronic and magnetic properties of [Au(n)Mg]? (n = 1-8) clusters have been investigated systematically in comparison with pure gold clusters. The results show that doping with a single Mg atom dramatically affects the geometries of the ground-state Au(n+1)? clusters for n = 2-7. Here, the relative stabilities are investigated in terms of the calculated fragmentation energies, second-order difference of energies, and highest occupied?lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy gaps, manifesting that the ground-state [Au(n)Mg]? and Au(n+1)? clusters with odd-number gold atoms have a higher relative stability. In particular, it should be noted that the [Au?Mg]? cluster has the most enhanced chemical stability. The natural population analysis reveals that the charges in [Au(n)Mg]? (n = 2-8) clusters transfer from the Mg atom to the Au frames. In addition, the total magnetic moments of [Au(n)Mg]? clusters exhibit an odd-even oscillation as a function of cluster size, and the magnetic effects mainly come from the Au atoms.  相似文献

The structural and electronic properties of Au(m)Ag(n) binary clusters (2 < or = m + n < or = 8) have been investigated by density functional theory with relativistic effective core potentials. The results indicate that Au atoms tend to occupy the surface of Au(m)Ag(n) clusters (n > or = 2 and m > or = 2). As a result, segregation of small or big bimetallic clusters can be explained according to the atomic mass. The binding energies of the most stable Au(m)Ag(n) clusters increase with increasing m+n. The vertical ionization potentials of the most stable Au(m)Ag(n) clusters show odd-even oscillations with changing m+n. The possible dissociation channels of the clusters considered are also discussed.  相似文献

A systematic study of bimetallic Au(n)M(2) (n = 1-6, M = Ni, Pd, and Pt) clusters is performed by using density functional theory at the B3LYP level. The geometric structures, relative stabilities, HOMO-LUMO gaps, natural charges and electronic magnetic moments of these clusters are investigated, and compared with pure gold clusters. The results indicate that the properties of Au(n)M(2) clusters for n = 1-3 diverge more from pure gold clusters, while those for n = 4-6 show good agreement with Au(n) clusters. The dissociation energies, the second-order difference of energies, and HOMO-LUMO energy gaps, exhibiting an odd-even alternation, indicate that the Au(4)M(2) clusters are the most stable structures for Au(n)M(2) (n = 1-6, M = Ni, Pd, and Pt) clusters. Moreover, we predict that the average atomic binding energies of these clusters should tend to a limit in the range 1.56-2.00 eV.  相似文献

Elucidating the chemisorption properties of CO on gold clusters is essential to understanding the catalytic mechanisms of gold nanoparticles. Gold hexamer Au(6) is a highly stable cluster, known to possess a D(3)(h) triangular ground state structure with an extremely large HOMO-LUMO gap. Here we report a photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) and quasi-relativistic density functional theory (DFT) study of Au(6)-CO complexes, Au(6)(CO)(n)(-) and Au(6)(CO)(n) (n = 0-3). CO chemisorption on Au(6) is observed to be highly unusual. While the electron donor capability of CO is known to decrease the electron binding energies of Au(m)(CO)(n)(-) complexes, CO chemisorption on Au(6) is observed to have very little effect on the electron binding energies of the first PES band of Au(6)(CO)(n)(-) (n = 1-3). Extensive DFT calculations show that the first three CO successively chemisorb to the three apex sites of the D(3)(h) Au(6). It is shown that the LUMO of the Au(6)-CO complexes is located in the inner triangle. Thus CO chemisorption on the apex sites (outer triangle) has little effect on this orbital, resulting in the roughly constant electron binding energies for the first PES band in Au(6)(CO)(n)(-) (n = 0-3). Detailed molecular orbital analyses lead to decisive information about chemisorption interactions between CO and a model Au cluster.  相似文献

Laser-ablated Au atoms have been co-deposited with CO molecules in solid argon to produce gold carbonyls. In addition to the previously reported Au(CO)n (n = 1, 2) and Au2(CO)2 molecules, small gold cluster monocarbonyls Au(n)CO (n = 2-5) are formed on sample annealing and characterized using infrared spectroscopy on the basis of the results of the isotopic substitution and CO concentration change and comparison with theoretical predictions. Of particular interest is that the mononuclear gold carbonyls, Au(CO)n (n = 1, 2), are favored under the experimental conditions of higher CO concentration and lower laser energy, whereas the yields of the gold cluster carbonyls, Au(n)CO (n = 2-5) and Au2(CO)2, remarkably increase with lower CO concentration and higher laser power. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been performed on these molecules and the corresponding small naked gold clusters. The identities of these gold carbonyls Au(n)CO (n = 1-5) and Au(n)(CO)2 (n = 1, 2) are confirmed by the good agreement between the experimental and calculated vibrational frequencies, relative absorption intensities, and isotopic shifts.  相似文献

The structure and electronic and optical properties of hydrogenated lithium clusters Li(n)H(m) (n = 1-30, m ≤ n) have been investigated by density functional theory (DFT). The structural optimizations are performed with the Becke 3 Lee-Yang-Parr (B3LYP) exchange-correlation functional with 6-311G++(d, p) basis set. The reliability of the method employed has been established by excellent agreement with computational and experimental data, wherever available. The turn over from two- to three-dimensional geometry in Li(n)H(m) clusters is found to occur at size n = 4 and m = 3. Interestingly, a rock-salt-like face-centered cubic structure is seen in Li(13)H(14). The sequential addition of hydrogen to small-sized Li clusters predicted regions of regular lattice in saturated hydrogenated clusters. This led us to focus on large-sized saturated clusters rather than to increase the number of hydrogen atoms monotonically. The lattice constants of Li(9)H(9), Li(18)H(18), Li(20)H(20), and Li(30)H(30) calculated at their optimized geometry are found to gradually approach the corresponding bulk values of 4.083. The sequential addition of hydrogen stabilizes the cluster, irrespective of the cluster size. A significant increase in stability is seen in the case of completely hydrogenated clusters, i.e., when the number of hydrogen atoms equals Li atoms. The enhanced stability has been interpreted in terms of various electronic and optical properties like adiabatic and vertical ionization potential, HOMO-LUMO gap, and polarizability.  相似文献

The stability and structures of titanium-doped gold clusters Au(n)Ti (n=2-16) are studied by the relativistic all-electron density-functional calculations. The most stable structures for Au(n)Ti clusters with n=2-7 are found to be planar. A structural transition of Au(n)Ti clusters from two-dimensional to three-dimensional geometry occurs at n=8, while the Au(n)Ti (n=12-16) prefer a gold cage structure with Ti atom locating at the center. Binding energy and second-order energy differences indicate that the Au(14)Ti has a significantly higher stability than its neighbors. A high ionization potential, low electron affinity, and large energy gap being the typical characters of a magic cluster are found for the Au(14)Ti. For cluster-cluster interaction between magic transition-metal-doped gold clusters, calculations were performed for cluster dimers, in which the clusters have an icosahedral or nonicosahedral structure. It is concluded that both electronic shell effect and relative orientation of clusters are responsible for the cluster-cluster interaction.  相似文献

Density-functional theory with generalized gradient approximation for the exchange-correlation potential has been used to calculate the structural and electronic structure of Si(n)C(n) (n=1-10) clusters. The geometries are found to undergo a structural change from two dimensional to three dimensional when the cluster size n equals 4. Cagelike structures are favored as the cluster size increases. A distinct segregation between the silicon and carbon atoms is observed for these clusters. It is found that the C atoms favor to form five-membered rings as the cluster size n increases. However, the growth motif for Si atoms is not observed. The Si(n)C(n) clusters at n=2, 6, and 9 are found to possess relatively higher stability. On the basis of the lowest-energy geometries obtained, the size dependence of cluster properties such as binding energy, HOMO-LUMO gap, Mulliken charge, vibrational spectrum, and ionization potential has been computed and analyzed. The bonding characteristics of the clusters are discussed.  相似文献

The geometries, stabilities, and electronic and magnetic properties of small-sized Zr(n) (n=2-8) clusters with different spin configurations were systematically investigated by using density functional approach. Emphasis is placed on studies that focus on the total energies, equilibrium geometries, growth-pattern behaviors, fragmentation energies, and magnetic characteristics of zirconium clusters. The optimized geometries show that the large-sized low-lying Zr(n) (n=5-8) clusters become three-dimensional structures. Particularly, the relative stabilities of Zr(n) clusters in terms of the calculated fragmentation energies and second-order difference of energies are discussed, exhibiting that the magic numbers of stabilities are n=2, 5, and 7 and that the pentagonal bipyramidal D(5h) Zr(7) geometry is the most stable isomer and a nonmagnetic ground state. Furthermore, the investigated magnetic moments confirm that the atomic averaged magnetic moments of the Zr(n) (n not equal to 2) display an odd-even oscillation features and the tetrahedron C(s) Zr(4) structure has the biggest atomic averaged magnetic moment of 1.5 mu(B)/at. In addition, the calculated highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital gaps indicate that the Zr(n) (n=2 and 7) clusters have dramatically enhanced chemical stabilities.  相似文献

Chromium-doped silicon clusters, CrSi(n) (-)(n = 3-12), were investigated with anion photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. The combination of experimental measurement and theoretical calculations reveals that the onset of endohedral structure in CrSi(n) (-) clusters occurs at n = 10 and the magnetic properties of the CrSi(n) (-) clusters are correlated to their geometric structures. The most stable isomers of CrSi(n) (-) from n = 3 to 9 have exohedral structures with magnetic moments of 3-5μ(B) while those of CrSi(10) (-), CrSi(11) (-), and CrSi(12) (-) have endohedral structures and magnetic moments of 1μ(B.).  相似文献

The structure and harmonic vibrations of Ga(n)N(n) (n = 3-10) clusters have been investigated using the B3LYP (Becke 3-parameter-Lee-Yang-Parr) density functional theory. All structures are found to be cumulenic D(nh) rings (equal bonds, alternating angles), with one intense out of plane mode and three infrared-active degenerate modes, of which the highest one is extremely intense and asymptotically increases to 1029 cm(-1) for n = 10. Comparisons with C2n, B(n)N(n), and Al(n)N(n) clusters, the structure and bonding type for the Ga(n)N(n) (n=3-10) clusters are consistent with those of the C2n (n = 3, 5, 7, ...) clusters, the B(n)N(n) (n = 3-10), and Al(n)N(n) (n = 3-9) clusters.  相似文献
