Coarse spaces are instrumental in obtaining scalability for domain decomposition methods. However, it is known that most popular choices of coarse spaces perform rather weakly in presence of heterogeneities in the coefficients in the partial differential equations, especially for systems. Here, we introduce in a variational setting a new coarse space that is robust even when there are such heterogeneities. We achieve this by solving local generalized eigenvalue problems which isolate the terms responsible for slow convergence. We give a general theoretical result and then some numerical examples on a heterogeneous elasticity problem.  相似文献

We extend the multiscale finite element method (MsFEM) as formulated by Hou and Wu in [Hou T.Y., Wu X.-H., A multiscale finite element method for elliptic problems in composite materials and porous media, J. Comput. Phys., 1997, 134(1), 169–189] to the PDE system of linear elasticity. The application, motivated by the multiscale analysis of highly heterogeneous composite materials, is twofold. Resolving the heterogeneities on the finest scale, we utilize the linear MsFEM basis for the construction of robust coarse spaces in the context of two-level overlapping domain decomposition preconditioners. We motivate and explain the construction and show that the constructed multiscale coarse space contains all the rigid body modes. Under the assumption that the material jumps are isolated, that is they occur only in the interior of the coarse grid elements, our numerical experiments show uniform convergence rates independent of the contrast in Young’s modulus within the heterogeneous material. Elsewise, if no restrictions on the position of the high coefficient inclusions are imposed, robustness cannot be guaranteed any more. These results justify expectations to obtain coefficient-explicit condition number bounds for the PDE system of linear elasticity similar to existing ones for scalar elliptic PDEs as given in the work of Graham, Lechner and Scheichl [Graham I.G., Lechner P.O., Scheichl R., Domain decomposition for multiscale PDEs, Numer. Math., 2007, 106(4), 589–626]. Furthermore, we numerically observe the properties of the MsFEM coarse space for linear elasticity in an upscaling framework. Therefore, we present experimental results showing the approximation errors of the multiscale coarse space w.r.t. the fine-scale solution.  相似文献

Two-level Schwarz domain decomposition methods are very powerful techniques for the efficient numerical solution of partial differential equations (PDEs). A two-level domain decomposition method requires two main components: a one-level preconditioner (or its corresponding smoothing iterative method), which is based on domain decomposition techniques, and a coarse correction step, which relies on a coarse space. The coarse space must properly represent the error components that the chosen one-level method is not capable to deal with. In the literature, most of the works introduced efficient coarse spaces obtained as the span of functions defined on the entire space domain of the considered PDE. Therefore, the corresponding two-level preconditioners and iterative methods are defined in volume. In this paper, we use the excellent smoothing properties of Schwarz domain decomposition methods to define, for general elliptic problems, a new class of substructured two-level methods, for which both Schwarz smoothers and coarse correction steps are defined on the interfaces (except for the application of the smoother that requires volumetric subdomain solves). This approach has several advantages. On the one hand, the required computational effort is cheaper than the one required by classical volumetric two-level methods. On the other hand, our approach does not require, like classical multi-grid methods, the explicit construction of coarse spaces, and it permits a multilevel extension, which is desirable when the high dimension of the problem or the scarce quality of the coarse space prevents the efficient numerical solution. Numerical experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed new numerical framework.

Domain decomposition for multiscale PDEs   总被引:3,自引:1,他引:2
We consider additive Schwarz domain decomposition preconditioners for piecewise linear finite element approximations of elliptic PDEs with highly variable coefficients. In contrast to standard analyses, we do not assume that the coefficients can be resolved by a coarse mesh. This situation arises often in practice, for example in the computation of flows in heterogeneous porous media, in both the deterministic and (Monte–Carlo simulated) stochastic cases. We consider preconditioners which combine local solves on general overlapping subdomains together with a global solve on a general coarse space of functions on a coarse grid. We perform a new analysis of the preconditioned matrix, which shows rather explicitly how its condition number depends on the variable coefficient in the PDE as well as on the coarse mesh and overlap parameters. The classical estimates for this preconditioner with linear coarsening guarantee good conditioning only when the coefficient varies mildly inside the coarse grid elements. By contrast, our new results show that, with a good choice of subdomains and coarse space basis functions, the preconditioner can still be robust even for large coefficient variation inside domains, when the classical method fails to be robust. In particular our estimates prove very precisely the previously made empirical observation that the use of low-energy coarse spaces can lead to robust preconditioners. We go on to consider coarse spaces constructed from multiscale finite elements and prove that preconditioners using this type of coarsening lead to robust preconditioners for a variety of binary (i.e., two-scale) media model problems. Moreover numerical experiments show that the new preconditioner has greatly improved performance over standard preconditioners even in the random coefficient case. We show also how the analysis extends in a straightforward way to multiplicative versions of the Schwarz method. We would like to thank Bill McLean for very useful discussions concerning this work. We would also like to thank Maksymilian Dryja for helping us to improve the result in Theorem 4.3.  相似文献

This paper concerns hyperbolic systems of two linear first-order PDEs in one space dimension with periodicity conditions in time and reflection boundary conditions in space. The coefficients of the PDEs are supposed to be time independent, but allowed to be discontinuous with respect to the space variable. We construct two scales of Banach spaces (for the solutions and for the right-hand sides of the equations, respectively) such that the problem can be modeled by means of Fredholm operators of index zero between corresponding spaces of the two scales.  相似文献

We analyze two‐level overlapping Schwarz domain decomposition methods for vector‐valued piecewise linear finite element discretizations of the PDE system of linear elasticity. The focus of our study lies in the application to compressible, particle‐reinforced composites in 3D with large jumps in their material coefficients. We present coefficient‐explicit bounds for the condition number of the two‐level additive Schwarz preconditioned linear system. Thereby, we do not require that the coefficients are resolved by the coarse mesh. The bounds show a dependence of the condition number on the energy of the coarse basis functions, the coarse mesh, and the overlap parameters, as well as the coefficient variation. Similar estimates have been developed for scalar elliptic PDEs by Graham et al. 1 The coarse spaces to which they apply here are assumed to contain the rigid body modes and can be considered as generalizations of the space of piecewise linear vector‐valued functions on a coarse triangulation. The developed estimates provide a concept for the construction of coarse spaces, which can lead to preconditioners that are robust with respect to high contrasts in Young's modulus and the Poisson ratio of the underlying composite. To confirm the sharpness of the theoretical findings, we present numerical results in 3D using vector‐valued linear, multiscale finite element and energy‐minimizing coarse spaces. The theory is not restricted to the isotropic (Lamé) case, extends to the full‐tensor case, and allows applications to multiphase materials with anisotropic constituents in two and three spatial dimensions. However, the bounds will depend on the ratio of largest to smallest eigenvalue of the elasticity tensor.  相似文献

This paper theoretically examines a multigrid strategy for solving systems of elliptic partial differential equations (PDEs) introduced in the work of Lee. Unlike most multigrid solvers that are constructed directly from the whole system operator, this strategy builds the solver using a factorization of the system operator. This factorization is composed of an algebraic coupling term and a diagonal (decoupled) differential operator. Exploiting the factorization, this approach can produce decoupled systems on the coarse levels. The corresponding coarse‐grid operators are in fact the Galerkin variational coarsening of the diagonal differential operator. Thus, rather than performing delicate coarse‐grid selection and interpolation weight procedures on the original strongly coupled system as often done, these procedures are isolated to the diagonal differential operator. To establish the theoretical results, however, we assume that these systems of PDEs are elliptic in the Agmon–Douglis–Nirenberg (ADN) sense and apply the factorization and multigrid only to the principal part of the system of PDEs. Two‐grid error bounds are established for the iteration applied to the complete system of PDEs. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of this strategy and to expose factors that affect the convergence of the methods derived from this strategy.  相似文献

We introduce a notion of fibred coarse embedding into Hilbert space for metric spaces, which is a generalization of Gromov?s notion of coarse embedding into Hilbert space. It turns out that a large class of expander graphs admit such an embedding. We show that the maximal coarse Baum–Connes conjecture holds for metric spaces with bounded geometry which admit a fibred coarse embedding into Hilbert space.  相似文献

A new prolongator is proposed for smoothed aggregation (SA) multigrid. The proposed prolongator addresses a limitation of standard SA when it is applied to anisotropic problems. For anisotropic problems, it is fairly standard to generate small aggregates (used to mimic semi‐coarsening) in order to coarsen only in directions of strong coupling. Although beneficial to convergence, this can lead to a prohibitively large number of non‐zeros in the standard SA prolongator and the corresponding coarse discretization operator. To avoid this, the new prolongator modifies the standard prolongator by shifting support (non‐zeros within a prolongator column) from one aggregate to another to satisfy a specified non‐zero pattern. This leads to a sparser operator that can be used effectively within a multigrid V‐cycle. The key to this algorithm is that it preserves certain null space interpolation properties that are central to SA for both scalar and systems of partial differential equations (PDEs). We present two‐dimensional and three‐dimensional numerical experiments to demonstrate that the new method is competitive with standard SA for scalar problems, and significantly better for problems arising from PDE systems. We study the Ribaucour transformation for flat Lagrangian submanifolds in complex flat space and complex projective space. As a consequence, we obtain a process to generate a new family of such submanifolds from a given one. Analytically, this provides a method to construct new solutions of the corresponding systems of PDEs from a given one. We also show that such transformation always comes with a permutability formula.  相似文献

A theorem proved by Hrushovski for graphs and extended by Solecki and Vershik (independently from each other) to metric spaces leads to a stronger version of ultrahomogeneity of the infinite random graph R, the universal Urysohn metric space U, and other related objects. We show how the result can be used to average out uniform and coarse embeddings of U (and its various counterparts) into normed spaces. Sometimes this leads to new embeddings of the same kind that are metric transforms and besides extend to affine representations of various isometry groups. As an application of this technique, we show that U admits neither a uniform nor a coarse embedding into a uniformly convex Banach space.  相似文献

The following problem arises in thermoacoustic tomography and has intimate connection with PDEs and integral geometry. Reconstruct a function f supported in an n-dimensional ball B given the spherical means of f over all geodesic spheres centered on the boundary of B. We propose a new approach to this problem, which yields explicit reconstruction formulas in arbitrary constant curvature space, including euclidean space ? n , the n-dimensional sphere, and hyperbolic space. The main idea is analytic continuation of the corresponding operator families. The results are applied to inverse problems for a large class of Euler-Poisson-Darboux equations in constant curvature spaces of arbitrary dimension.

Summary. A nonlinear Galerkin method using mixed finite elements is presented for the two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The scheme is based on two finite element spaces and for the approximation of the velocity, defined respectively on one coarse grid with grid size and one fine grid with grid size and one finite element space for the approximation of the pressure. Nonlinearity and time dependence are both treated on the coarse space. We prove that the difference between the new nonlinear Galerkin method and the standard Galerkin solution is of the order of $H^2$, both in velocity ( and pressure norm). We also discuss a penalized version of our algorithm which enjoys similar properties. Received October 5, 1993 / Revised version received November 29, 1993  相似文献

We investigate how coarse embeddability of box spaces into Hilbert space behaves under group extensions. In particular, we prove a result which implies that a semidirect product of a finitely generated free group by a finitely generated residually finite amenable group has a box space which coarsely embeds into Hilbert space. This provides a new class of examples of metric spaces with bounded geometry which coarsely embed into Hilbert space but do not have property A, generalising the example of Arzhantseva, Guentner and Spakula.  相似文献

We develop an Lp -theory of stochastic PDEs of divergence form. Under natural assumptions on the coefficients and the data, we show that the solutions belong to some modified stochastic Sobolev spaces. As a consequence of this result and certain embedding theorem, we also show that the solutions are Holder continuous in space and time a.s. for sufficiently large p  相似文献

Motivated by the increasing importance of large‐scale networks typically modeled by graphs, this paper is concerned with the development of mathematical tools for solving problems associated with the popular graph Laplacian. We exploit its mixed formulation based on its natural factorization as product of two operators. The goal is to construct a coarse version of the mixed graph Laplacian operator with the purpose to construct two‐level, and by recursion, a multilevel hierarchy of graphs and associated operators. In many situations in practice, having a coarse (i.e., reduced dimension) model that maintains some inherent features of the original large‐scale graph and respective graph Laplacian offers potential to develop efficient algorithms to analyze the underlined network modeled by this large‐scale graph. One possible application of such a hierarchy is to develop multilevel methods that have the potential to be of optimal complexity. In this paper, we consider general (connected) graphs and function spaces defined on its edges and its vertices. These two spaces are related by a discrete gradient operator, ‘Grad’ and its adjoint, ‘ ? Div’, referred to as (negative) discrete divergence. We also consider a coarse graph obtained by aggregation of vertices of the original one. Then, a coarse vertex space is identified with the subspace of piecewise constant functions over the aggregates. We consider the ?2‐projection QH onto the space of these piecewise constants. In the present paper, our main result is the construction of a projection πH from the original edge‐space onto a properly constructed coarse edge‐space associated with the edges of the coarse graph. The projections πH and QH commute with the discrete divergence operator, that is, we have Div πH = QH div. The respective pair of coarse edge‐space and coarse vertex‐space offer the potential to construct two‐level, and by recursion, multilevel methods for the mixed formulation of the graph Laplacian, which utilizes the discrete divergence operator. The performance of one two‐level method with overlapping Schwarz smoothing and correction based on the constructed coarse spaces for solving such mixed graph Laplacian systems is illustrated on a number of graph examples. Since their popularization in the late 1970s and early 1980s, multigrid methods have been a central tool in the numerical solution of the linear and nonlinear systems that arise from the discretization of many PDEs. In this paper, we present a local Fourier analysis (LFA, or local mode analysis) framework for analyzing the complementarity between relaxation and coarse‐grid correction within multigrid solvers for systems of PDEs. Important features of this analysis framework include the treatment of arbitrary finite‐element approximation subspaces, leading to discretizations with staggered grids, and overlapping multiplicative Schwarz smoothers. The resulting tools are demonstrated for the Stokes, curl–curl, and grad–div equations. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The C0 coarse structure on a metric space is a refinement of the bounded structure and is closely related to the topology of the space. In this paper we will prove the C0 version of the coarse Baum–Connes conjecture and show that K*(C*X0) is a topological invariant for a broad class of metric spaces. Using this result we construct a ‘geometric’ obstruction group to the coarse Baum–Connes conjecture for the bounded coarse structure. We then show under the assumption of finite asymptotic dimension that the obstructions vanish, and hence we obtain a new proof of the coarse Baum–Connes conjecture in this context.  相似文献

We prove that the non-squeezing theorem of Gromov holds for symplectomorphisms on an infinite-dimensional symplectic Hilbert space, under the assumption that the image of the ball is convex. The proof is based on the construction by duality methods of a symplectic capacity for bounded convex neighbourhoods of the origin. We also discuss the role of infinite-dimensional non-squeezing results in the study of Hamiltonian PDEs and show some examples of symplectomorphisms on infinite-dimensional spaces exhibiting behaviours which would be impossible in finite dimensions.  相似文献
