Most existing beam formulations assume that the cross section of the beam remains rigid regardless of the amplitude of the displacement. The absolute nodal coordinate formulation (ANCF); however, allows for the deformation of the cross section and leads to a more general beam models that capture the coupling between different modes of displacement. This paper examines the effect of the order of interpolation on the modes of deformation of the beam cross section using ANCF finite elements. To this end, a new two-dimensional shear deformable ANCF beam element is developed. The new finite element employs a higher order of interpolation, and allows for new cross section deformation modes that cannot be captured using previously developed shear deformable ANCF beam elements. The element developed in this study relaxes the assumption of planar cross section; thereby allowing for including the effect of warping as well as for different stretch values at different points on the element cross section. The displacement field of the new element is assumed to be cubic in the axial direction and quadratic in the transverse direction. Using this displacement field, more expressions for the element extension, shear and the cross section stretch can be systematically defined. The change in the cross section area is measured using Nanson’s formula. Measures of the shear angle, extension, and cross section stretch can also be systematically defined using coordinate systems defined at the element material points. Using these local coordinate systems, expressions for a nominal shear angle are obtained. The differences between the cross section deformation modes obtained using the new higher order element and those obtained using the previously developed lower order elements are highlighted. Numerical examples are presented in order to compare the results obtained using the new finite element and the results obtained using previously developed ANCF finite elements.  相似文献

A six-node, plane-stress mixed finite element model has been developed by using Hamilton's energy principle for the natural vibrations of laminated composite beams. Continuity of the transverse stress and displacement fields has been enforced through the thickness of the laminated beam in the formulation for proper modelling. The transverse stress components have been invoked as the nodal degrees of freedom by applying elasticity relations. Natural frequencies of laminated composite beams obtained through the present formulation have been shown to be in good agreement with the data available in the literature. Various mode shapes have also been presented as benchmark solutions.  相似文献

In this paper, a boundary element method is developed for the geometrically nonlinear response of shear deformable beams of simply or multiply connected constant cross-section, traversed by moving loads, resting on tensionless nonlinear three-parameter viscoelastic foundation, undergoing moderate large deflections under general boundary conditions. The beam is subjected to the combined action of arbitrarily distributed or concentrated transverse moving loading as well as to axial loading. To account for shear deformations, the concept of shear deformation coefficients is used. Three boundary value problems are formulated with respect to the transverse displacement, to the axial displacement and to a stress functions and solved using the Analog Equation Method, a Boundary Element based method. Application of the boundary element technique yields a system of nonlinear Differential-Algebraic Equations, which is solved using an efficient time discretization scheme, from which the transverse and axial displacements are computed. The evaluation of the shear deformation coefficient is accomplished from the aforementioned stress function using only boundary integration. Analyses are performed to illustrate, wherever possible, the accuracy of the developed method, to investigate the effects of various parameters, such as the load velocity, load frequency, shear deformation, foundation nonlinearity, damping, on the beam displacements and stress resultants and to examine how the consideration of shear and axial compression affects the response of the system.  相似文献

In finite element methods that are based on position and slope coordinates, a representation of axial and bending deformation by means of an elastic line approach has become popular. Such beam and plate formulations based on the so-called absolute nodal coordinate formulation have not yet been verified sufficiently enough with respect to analytical results or classical nonlinear rod theories. Examining the existing planar absolute nodal coordinate element, which uses a curvature proportional bending strain expression, it turns out that the deformation does not fully agree with the solution of the geometrically exact theory and, even more serious, the normal force is incorrect. A correction based on the classical ideas of the extensible elastica and geometrically exact theories is applied and a consistent strain energy and bending moment relations are derived. The strain energy of the solid finite element formulation of the absolute nodal coordinate beam is based on the St. Venant-Kirchhoff material: therefore, the strain energy is derived for the latter case and compared to classical nonlinear rod theories. The error in the original absolute nodal coordinate formulation is documented by numerical examples. The numerical example of a large deformation cantilever beam shows that the normal force is incorrect when using the previous approach, while a perfect agreement between the absolute nodal coordinate formulation and the extensible elastica can be gained when applying the proposed modifications. The numerical examples show a very good agreement of reference analytical and numerical solutions with the solutions of the proposed beam formulation for the case of large deformation pre-curved static and dynamic problems, including buckling and eigenvalue analysis. The resulting beam formulation does not employ rotational degrees of freedom and therefore has advantages compared to classical beam elements regarding energy-momentum conservation.  相似文献

Free vibration analysis of planar curved beams by wave propagation   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In this paper, a systematic approach for the free vibration analysis of a planar circular curved beam system is presented. The system considered includes multiple point discontinuities such as elastic supports, attached masses, and curvature changes. Neglecting transverse shear and rotary inertia, harmonic wave solutions are found for both extensional and inextensional curved beam models. Dispersion equations are obtained and cut-off frequencies are determined. Wave reflection and transmission matrices are formulated, accounting for general support conditions. These matrices are combined, with the aid of field transfer matrices, to provide a concise and efficient method for the free vibration problem of multi-span planar circular curved beams with general boundary conditions and supports. The solutions are exact since the effects of attenuating wave components are included in the formulation. Several examples are presented and compared with other methods.  相似文献

Problems related with the implications of conservative and gyroscopic forces on vibration and the stability of a circular cylindrical shaft modeled as a thin-walled composite beam and spinning with constant angular speed about its longitudinal axis are addressed. Taking into account the directionality property of fiber reinforced composite materials, it is shown that for a shaft featuring flapwise-chordwise-bending coupling, a dramatic enhancement of both the vibrational and stability behavior can be reached. In addition, the effects played in the same context by transverse shear, rotatory inertias as well as by the various boundary conditions are discussed and pertinent conclusions are outlined.  相似文献

Free vibration analysis of functionally graded curved panels is carried out using a higher-order formulation. A C0 finite element formulation is used to carry out the analysis. The element consists of nine degrees of freedom per node with higher-order terms in the Taylor's-series expansion, which represents the higher-order transverse cross-sectional deformation modes. The formulation includes Sanders’ approximation for doubly curved shells considering the effects of rotary inertia and transverse shear. A realistic parabolic distribution of transverse shear strains through the shell thickness is assumed and the use of shear correction factor is avoided. Material properties are assumed to be temperature independent and graded in the thickness direction according to a simple power-law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. Heat conduction between ceramic and metal constituents is neglected. The accuracy of the formulation is validated by comparing the results with those available in the literature. Effects of panel geometry parameters and boundary conditions are studied.  相似文献

Here, free vibrations and transient dynamic response analyses of laminated cross-ply oval cylindrical shells are carried out. The formulation is based on higher order theory that accounts for the transverse shear and the transverse normal deformations, and includes zig-zag variation in the in-plane displacements across the thickness of the multi-layered shells. The contributions of inertia effect due to in-plane and rotary motions, and the higher order function arising from the assumed displacement models are included. The governing equations obtained using Lagrangian equations of motion are solved through finite element approach. A detailed parametric study is conducted to bring out the influence of different shell geometry, ovality parameter, lay-up and loading environment on the vibration characteristics related to different modes of vibrations of oval shell.  相似文献

A new general formulation that is applicable to the damaged, linear elastic structures ‘unified framework’ is used to obtain analytical expressions for natural frequencies and mode shapes. The term mode shapes is used to mean the displacement modes, the section rotation modes, the sectional bending strain modes and sectional shear strain modes. The formulation is applicable to damaged elastic self-adjoint systems. The formulation has two unique aspects: First, the theory is mathematically rigorous since no assumptions are made regarding the physical behavior at a damage location, therefore there is no need to substitute the damage with a hypothetical elastic element such as a spring. Since the beam is not divided at the damage location, rather than an 8 by 8, only a 4 by 4 matrix is solved to obtain the natural frequencies and mode shapes. Second, the inertia effects due to damage which have till now been neglected by researchers are accounted for. The formulation uses a geometric damage model, perturbation of mode shapes and natural frequencies, and a modal superposition technique to obtain and solve the governing differential equation. Timoshenko beam theory is then taken as an example, and its results are compared with results using Euler–Bernoulli beam theory and finite element models. The range of applicability of the two theories is ascertained for damage characteristics such as depth and extent of damage and beam characteristics such as slenderness ratio and Poisson?s ratio. The paper considers rectangular notch like non-propagating damage as an example of the damage.  相似文献

Semi-active vibration control based on magnetorheological (MR) materials offers excellent potential for high bandwidth control through rapid variations in the rheological properties of the fluid under varying magnetic field. Such fluids may be conveniently applied to partial or more critical components of a large structure to realize more efficient and compact vibration control mechanism with variable damping. This study investigates the properties and vibration responses of a partially treated multi-layer MR fluid beam. The governing equations of a partially treated multi-layered MR beam are formulated using finite element method and Ritz formulation. The validity of the proposed finite element formulations is demonstrated by comparing the results with those obtained from the Ritz formulation and the experimental measurements. The properties of different configurations of a partially treated MR-fluid beam are evaluated to investigate the influences of the location and length of the MR-fluid for different boundary conditions. The properties in terms of natural frequencies and loss factors corresponding to various modes are evaluated under different magnetic field intensities and compared with those of the fully treated beams. The effect of location of the fluid treatment on deflection mode shapes is also investigated. The forced vibration responses of the various configurations of partially treated MR sandwich beam are also evaluated under harmonic force excitations. The results suggest that the natural frequencies and transverse displacement response of the partially treated MR beams are strongly influenced not only by the intensity of the applied magnetic field, but also by the location and the length of the fluid pocket. The application of partial treatment could also alter the deflection pattern of the beam, particularly the location of the peak deflection.  相似文献

In this paper an analytical treatment for the formulation of the differential equations, governing the harmonic motion of a uniform skew-curved bar, is presented. Each differential element of the bar has six degrees of freedom, i.e., three translations and three rotations. The influences of transverse shear deformation and rotary inertia are included in the analysis. Furthermore, the problem of harmonic motion of planar curved bars is examined and special cases are investigated, the solutions obtained being in agreement with existing formulae.  相似文献

Here, an analytical approach for the dynamic analysis, viz., free and forced vibrations, of curved nanobeams using nonlocal elasticity beam theory based on Eringen formulation coupled with a higher-order shear deformation accounting for through thickness stretching is investigated. The formulation is general in the sense that it can be deduced to analyse the effect of various structural theories pertaining to curved nanobeams. It also includes inplane, rotary and coupling inertia terms. The governing equations derived, using Hamiltons principle, are solved in conjunction with Naviers solutions. The free vibration results are obtained employing the standard eigenvalue analysis whereas the displacement/stress responses in time domain for the curved nanobeams subjected to rectangular pulse loading are evaluated based on Newmarks time integration scheme. The formulation is validated considering problems for which solutions are available. A comparative study is done here by different theories obtained through the formulation. The effects of various structural parameters such as thickness ratio, beam length, rise of the curved beam, loading pulse duration, and nonlocal scale parameter are brought out on the dynamic behaviours of curved nanobeams.  相似文献

An analytical study for free vibration of naturally curved and twisted beams with uniform cross-sectional shapes is carried out using spatial curved beam theory based on the Washizu's static model. In the governing equations of motion of the beams, all displacement functions and the generalized warping coordinate are defined at the centroid axis and also the effects of rotary inertia, transverse shear deformations and torsion-related warping are included in the proposed model. Explicit analytical expressions are derived for the vibrating mode shapes of a curved, bending-torsional-shearing coupled beam under clamped-clamped boundary condition with the help of symbolic computing package Mathematica, and a process of searching is used to determine the natural frequencies. Comparisons of the present results with the FEM results using beam elements in ANSYS code show good accuracy in computation and validity of the model. Further, the present model is used for cylindrical helical springs with circular cross-section fixed at both ends, and the results indicate that the natural frequencies agree well with the theoretical and experimental results available.  相似文献

A detailed model for the beams with partially debonded active constraining damping (ACLD) treatment is presented. In this model, the transverse displacement of the constraining layer is considered to be non-identical to that of the host structure. In the perfect bonding region, the viscoelastic core is modelled to carry both peel and shear stresses, while in the debonding area, it is assumed that no peel and shear stresses be transferred between the host beam and the constraining layer. The adhesive layer between the piezoelectric sensor and the host beam is also considered in this model. In active control, the positive position feedback control is employed to control the first mode of the beam. Based on this model, the incompatibility of the transverse displacements of the active constraining layer and the host beam is investigated. The passive and active damping behaviors of the ACLD patch with different thicknesses, locations and lengths are examined. Moreover, the effects of debonding of the damping layer on both passive and active control are examined via a simulation example. The results show that the incompatibility of the transverse displacements is remarkable in the regions near the ends of the ACLD patch especially for the high order vibration modes. It is found that a thinner damping layer may lead to larger shear strain and consequently results in a larger passive and active damping. In addition to the thickness of the damping layer, its length and location are also key factors to the hybrid control. The numerical results unveil that edge debonding can lead to a reduction of both passive and active damping, and the hybrid damping may be more sensitive to the debonding of the damping layer than the passive damping.  相似文献

This paper presents an accurate finite element procedure for the stability analysis of elastically supported pipes conveying fluid. With consideration of effects of lumped masses, fluid pressure and friction, the equations of motion are derived based on Hamilton's principle for the mass transport system. The kinematics of the pipe is based on Timoshenko beam theory for which the transverse shear deformation and rotary inertia of the pipe are included. The material behaviour of the pipe is described by the Kelvin viscoelastic model. The dynamic stability behaviours obtained by the present work are more conservative as compared with those evaluated by conventional Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. Also, it is found that the lumped masses, fluid pressure and friction will destabilize the system while the elastic support may have either a stabilizing or destabilizing effect depending on its stiffness and location. To demonstrate the validity and accuracy of the technique developed, several numerical examples are illustrated.  相似文献

The basic objective of the work reported in this paper is to extend a nine-node degenerated shell element developed earlier for stress analysis to the free vibration analysis of thick laminated composites. The nine-noded degenerated shell element is preferable to conventional solid elements for the modeling and analysis of laminated composite shell structures since the shell element works for both thick and thin shells. An enhanced interpolation of the transverse shear strains in the natural coordinates is used in this formulation to produce a shear locking free element and an enhanced interpolation of the membrane strains in the local coordinates is used to produce a membrane locking free element. The interpolation functions used in formulating the assumed strains are based on the Lagrangian interpolation polynomials. Various numerical examples are analyzed and their results are compared with the existing exact solutions where available and the numerical solutions calculated from other shell finite element formulations, to benchmark the current formulation.  相似文献

In this paper, the vibration behavior and control of a clamped–free rotating flexible cantilever arm with fully covered active constrained layer damping (ACLD) treatment are investigated. The arm is rotating in a horizontal plane in which the gravitational effect and rotary inertia are neglected. The stress–strain relationship for the viscoelastic material (VEM) is described by a complex shear modulus while the shear deformations in the two piezoelectric layers are neglected. Hamilton's principle in conjunction with finite element method (FEM) is used to derive the non-linear coupled differential equations of motion and the associated boundary conditions that describe the rigid hub angle rotation, the arm transverse displacement and the axial deformations of the three-layer composite. This refined model takes into account the effects of centrifugal stiffening due to the rotation of the beam and the potential energies of the VEM due to extension and bending. Active controllers are designed with PD for the piezosensor and actuator. The vibration frequencies and damping factors of the closed-loop beam/ACLD system are obtained after solving the characteristic complex eigenvalue problem numerically. The effects of different rotating speed, thickness ratio and loss factor of the VEM as well as different controller gain on the damped frequency and damping ratio are presented. The results of this study will be useful in the design of adaptive and smart structures for vibration suppression and control in rotating structures such as rotorcraft blades or robotic arms.  相似文献
