Poly(ϵ-caprolactone) (PCL)-polydimethylsiloxane diblock and triblock copolymers and poly(ϵ-caprolactone-co-4-ethylcaprolactone) random copolymers were prepared through the homogeneously catalyzed coordination anionic polymerization of ϵ-caprolactone (CL) and the copolymerization of CL with 4-ethyl-ϵ-caprolactone (EtCL) in the presence of hydroxy-terminated polysiloxanes or allyl alcohol as chain-transfer agents, respectively. Polysiloxane precursors with hydroxypropyl or hydroxyethyl propyl ether end groups were obtained by the hydrosilation of the appropriate unsaturated alcohol with monofunctional or difunctional hydro-terminated polysiloxanes of different molecular weights. As proven by differential scanning calorimetry analysis, the presence of siloxane blocks and EtCL units determined the diminished copolymer crystallinity, which was shown by the reduced melting temperatures and enthalpy of fusion with respect to those of pure PCL. Both types of copolymers were found to form, in the presence of a poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) emulsifier, monodisperse and stable nanoparticles able to encapsulate different types of bioactive compounds (Vitamin E and indomethacin). © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis of three series of double hydrophilic block copolymers (DHBCs), consisting of poly(ethylene oxide) as the neutral water soluble block and a second polyelectrolyte block of variable chemistry, is described. The synthetic scheme involves the anionic polymerization of poly(ptert‐butoxystyrene‐b‐ethylene oxide) (PtBOS‐PEO) amphiphilic block copolymer precursors followed by the acidic hydrolysis of the hydrophobic poly(ptert‐butoxystyrene) (PtBOS) block to an annealed anionic polyelectrolyte poly(p‐hydroxystyrene) (PHOS) block. The PHOS block was subsequently transformed into a high charge density annealed cationic polyelectrolyte namely poly[3,5‐bis(dimethylaminomethylene) hydroxystyrene] (NPHOS), via aminomethylation. Finally, the NPHOS block was transformed into a quenched polyelectrolyte, namely quaternized poly[3,5‐bis(dimethylaminomethylene) hydroxystyrene] (QNPHOS) block by reaction with CH3I. The solution properties of the different series of the above block polyelectrolyte copolymers have been investigated using static, dynamic and electrophoretic light scattering, turbidimetry, and fluorescence spectroscopy. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A well‐defined comblike copolymer of poly(ethylene oxide‐co‐glycidol) [(poly(EO‐co‐Gly)] as the main chain and poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) as the side chain was successfully prepared by the combination of anionic polymerization and ring‐opening polymerization. The glycidol was protected by ethyl vinyl ether to form 2,3‐epoxypropyl‐1‐ethoxyethyl ether (EPEE) first, and then ethylene oxide was copolymerized with EPEE by an anionic mechanism. The EPEE segments of the copolymer were deprotected by formic acid, and the glycidol segments of the copolymers were recovered after saponification. Poly(EO‐co‐Gly) with multihydroxyls was used further to initiate the ring‐opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone in the presence of stannous octoate. When the grafted copolymer was mixed with α‐cyclodextrin, crystalline inclusion complexes (ICs) were formed, and the intermediate and final products, poly(ethylene oxide‐co‐glycidol)‐graft‐poly(ε‐caprolactone) and ICs, were characterized with gel permeation chromatography, NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, X‐ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis in detail. The obtained ICs had a channel‐type crystalline structure, and the ratio of ε‐caprolactone units to α‐cyclodextrin for the ICs was higher than 1:1. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Copolymers of styrene with vinylphenyl trifluoromethyl carbinol, p-vinylphenyl trifluoromethyl carbinol, vinylphenyl hexafluorodimethyl carbinol, and p-vinylphenol are conditionally compatible with poly(ethylene oxide), depending on their composition and blending ratios, whereas copolymers of styrene and vinylphenyl methyl carbinol are much less compatible with poly(ethylene oxide), as determined by Tg criteria and differential scanning calorimetry. The crystallinity of poly(ethylene oxide) is changed in the copolymer/poly(ethylene oxide) blends, as indicated by depressions of the poly(ethylene oxide) melting point. Hydrogen-bond formation has been studied in two selected blends by infrared (IR) spectroscopy. Hydrogen bonding dissociation and reassociation as a function of temperature are reported. The conformation changes of poly(ethylene oxide) in the blends, the interaction between copolymer and poly(ethylene oxide) as well as in the reference blend, polystyrene/poly(ethylene oxide), are also investigated.  相似文献

The block copolymer poly(ethylene oxide)‐b‐poly(4‐vinylpyridine) was synthesized by a combination of living anionic ring‐opening polymerization and a controllable radical mechanism. The poly(ethylene oxide) prepolymer with the 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidinyl‐1‐oxy end group (PEOT) was first obtained by anionic ring‐opening polymerization of ethylene oxide with sodium 4‐oxy‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidinyl‐1‐oxy as the initiator in a homogeneous process. In the polymerization UV and electron spin resonance spectroscopy determined the 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidinyl‐1‐oxy moiety was left intact. The copolymers were then obtained by radical polymerization of 4‐vinylpyridine in the presence of PEOT. The polymerization showed a controllable radical mechanism. The desired block copolymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography, Fourier transform infrared, and NMR spectroscopy in detail. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new type of biodegradable polymer material, poly(caprolactone)–poly(ethylene glycol) block copolymer (PCL-b-PEG), was synthesized by means of direct copolycondensation of ε-caprolactone with poly(ethylene glycol) in the presence of a Ti(OBu)4 catalyst. The degradability of the polycaprolactone was improved by introducing a PEG component into it. The degradation of PCL-b-PEG copolymer increase with a decreasing crystallinity of the copolymer, and can be controlled by adjusting the component ratio of the copolymer.  相似文献

Functional poly(ethylene oxide) stars were prepared by free‐radical copolymerization of poly(ethylene oxide) macromonomers with divinylbenzene in water. The poly(ethylene oxide) arm was prepared by anionic polymerization using 2‐[2‐(N,N‐dimethylamino)ethoxy]ethanol potassium alkoxide as the initiator. These functional stars were converted into peripherally charged stars by quaternization of the peripheral tertiary amino groups with methyl iodide.  相似文献

A new stratagem for the synthesis of amphiphilic graft copolymers of hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) as the main chain and hydrophobic polystyrene as the side chains is suggested. A poly(ethylene oxide) with pending 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐1‐oxyls [poly(4‐glycidyloxy‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐1‐oxyl‐co‐ethylene oxide)] was first prepared by the anionic ring‐opening copolymerization of ethylene oxide and 4‐glycidyloxy‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐1‐oxyl, and then the graft copolymerization of styrene was completed with benzoyl peroxide as the initiator in the presence of poly(4‐glycidyloxy‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐1‐oxyl‐co‐ethylene oxide). The polymerization of styrene was under control, and comblike, amphiphilic poly(ethylene oxide)‐g‐polystyrene was obtained. The copolymer and its intermediates were characterized with size exclusion chromatography, 1H NMR, and electron spin resonance in detail. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis of the poly(para-phenyleneethynylene)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) block copolymer (PPE-b-PEO) ( 1 ) via condensation of endfunctionalized poly(para-phenyleneethynylene) (PPE) ( 5 ) and poly(ethylene oxide) monomethyl ether (PEO) is reported. This is achieved by the initial synthesis of a PPE homopolymer with quantitative terminal functionalization, as proven by 1H NMR and field desorption mass spectrometry (FD-MS). Reaction of the latter with PEO affords the block copolymer 1 , which was characterized by 1H NMR spectroscopy, FD-MS and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Furthermore it is shown that matrix assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) is a suitable method to investigate PPE-b-PEO with respect to molecular weights and copolymer composition.  相似文献

Interaction of amphiphilic poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(epsilon-caprolactone) copolymers with anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) has been investigated in aqueous solution. Formation of mixed micelles has been confirmed by surface tension measurements, whereas the influence of the surfactant on the copolymer self-assembling has been studied by measurement of the 1H NMR self-diffusion coefficients and by small-angle neutron scattering. As a rule, the surfactant decreases the heterogeneity of the micellar structures formed by the copolymer in water. Moreover, increasing the content of SDS results in the increasingly more important extension of the poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) corona chains and the copolymer micelle deaggregation. The stability of the micelles against SDS increases with the length of the hydrophobic block. Preliminary two-dimensional NMR measurements with nuclear Overhauser enhancement have confirmed the spatial vicinity between SDS and the constitutive blocks of the copolymer.  相似文献

This article discusses an effective route to prepare amphiphilic diblock copolymers containing a poly(ethylene oxide) block and a polyolefin block that includes semicrystalline thermoplastics, such as polyethylene and syndiotactic polystyrene (s‐PS), and elastomers, such as poly(ethylene‐co‐1‐octene) and poly(ethylene‐co‐styrene) random copolymers. The broad choice of polyolefin blocks provides the amphiphilic copolymers with a wide range of thermal properties from high melting temperature ~270 °C to low glass‐transition temperature ~?60 °C. The chemistry involves two reaction steps, including the preparation of a borane group‐terminated polyolefin by the combination of a metallocene catalyst and a borane chain‐transfer agent as well as the interconversion of a borane terminal group to an anionic (? O?K+) terminal group for the subsequent ring‐opening polymerization of ethylene oxide. The overall reaction process resembles a transformation from the metallocene polymerization of α‐olefins to the ring‐opening polymerization of ethylene oxide. The well‐defined reaction mechanisms in both steps provide the diblock copolymer with controlled molecular structure in terms of composition, molecular weight, moderate molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn < 2.5), and absence of homopolymer. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel grafted copolymer with two different types of side chains was synthesized via a combination of grafting-onto and grafting-from strategy. Graft copolymer with one side chains polybutadiene-graft-polystyrene (PB-g-PS) was first synthesized though the grafting-onto method. Following the subsequent grafting-from method, the second kind of side chain was introduced to the copolymer with anionic ring open polymerization of ethylene oxide, obtaining dual-grafted copolymer polybutadiene-graft-(polystyrene; poly(ethylene oxide)) (PB-g-(PS;PEO)). By this combined strategy, linear and star-shaped dual-grafted copolymer were synthesized. The resulting dual-grafted copolymers had controlled molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn < 1.20). The thermal behavior of this dual-grafted copolymer bearing glassy and crystalline side chains was determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), revealing that poly(ethylene oxide) grafts underwent confined crystallization, and the star-shaped copolymer had more confinement effects than did the linear ones.  相似文献

The synthesis of well‐defined poly(methyl methacrylate)‐block‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PMMA‐b‐PEO) dibock copolymer through anionic polymerization using monohydroxy telechelic PMMA as macroinitiator is described. Living anionic polymerization of methyl methacrylate was performed using initiators derived from the adduct of diphenylethylene and a suitable alkyllithium, either of which contains a hydroxyl group protected with tert‐butyldimethylsilyl moiety in tetrahydrofuran (THF) at ?78 °C in the presence of LiClO4. The synthesized telechelic PMMAs had good control of molecular weight with narrow molecular weight distribution (MWD). The 1H NMR and MALDI‐TOF MS analysis confirmed quantitative functionalization of chain‐ends. Block copolymerization of ethylene oxide was carried out using the terminal hydroxyl group of PMMA as initiator in the presence of potassium counter ion in THF at 35 °C. The PMMA‐b‐PEO diblock copolymers had moderate control of molecular weight with narrow MWD. The 1H NMR results confirm the absence of trans‐esterification reaction of propagating PEO anions onto the ester pendants of PMMA. The micellation behavior of PMMA‐b‐PEO diblock copolymer was examined in water using 1H NMR and dynamic light scattering. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(styrene-graft-ethylene oxide), having alkyl chains (C12 or C18) on the polystyrene main chain or on the poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) side chains, were synthesized. The main chain was alkylated by first ionizing amide groups in a styrene/acrylamide copolymer with tert-butoxide, and then using the amide anions as sites for reactions with 1-bromoalkanes. An excess of amide anions was used in the reaction, and the remaining anions were subsequently utilized as initiator sites for the anionic polymerization of ethylene oxide (EO). Synthesis of poly(styrene-graft-ethylene oxide) with alkylated side chains was accomplished by polymerization of EO onto the ionized styrene/acrylamide copolymer, followed by an alkylation of the terminal alkoxide anions with 1-bromoalkanes. The alkylated graft copolymers were structurally characterized by using elemental analysis, 1H NMR, GPC, and IR spectroscopy. DSC analysis showed that only graft copolymers with PEO contents exceeding about 50 wt % and side chain crystallinities comparable to those of homo-PEO. Main chain alkylated graft copolymers generally had higher crystalinities, as compared to nonalkylated and side chain alkylated samples. The graft copolymers absorbed water corresponding to one water molecule per EO unit at low PEO contents. The water absorption increased progressively at PEO contents above 30 wt % for main chain alkylated samples and above 50 wt % for non-alkylated samples. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

In this work, we aimed to study the association and interaction behavior of poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(propylene oxide)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) block copolymers grafted with poly(vinylpyrrolidone). Critical micellization concentrations were determined using fluorescent probes (pyrene) and critical micellization temperatures characterizing temperature-dependent transitions from monomers to multimolecular micelles were measured. The thermal responsiveness of the copolymer is not affected by the grafting. The hydrodynamic radius of the graft copolymer micelles is found to be greater than that of the original copolymer micelles. The graft copolymer is found to form anisotropic aggregates. The structure of the graft copolymer micelles is less disrupted by the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate, compared to the ungraft copolymer.  相似文献

Biodegradable and amphiphilic diblock copolymers [polylactide-block-poly(ethylene glycol)] and triblock copolymers [polylactide-block-poly(ethylene glycol)-block-polylactide] were synthesized by the anionic ring-opening polymerization of lactides in the presence of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether or poly(ethylene glycol) and potassium hexamethyldisilazide as a catalyst. The polymerization in toluene at room temperature was very fast, yielding copolymers of controlled molecular weights and tailored molecular architectures. The chemical structure of the copolymers was investigated with 1H and 13C NMR. The formation of block copolymers was confirmed by 13C NMR and differential scanning calorimetry investigations. The monomodal profile of the molecular weight distribution by gel permeation chromatography provided further evidence of block copolymer formation as well as the absence of cyclic species. Additional confirmation of the block copolymers was obtained by the substitution of 2-butanol for poly(ethylene glycol); butyl groups were clearly identified by 1H NMR as polymer chain end groups. The effects of the copolymer composition and lactide stereochemistry on the copolymer properties were examined. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A well‐defined amphiphilic copolymer brush with poly(ethylene oxide) as the main chain and polystyrene as the side chain was successfully prepared by a combination of anionic polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The glycidol was first protected by ethyl vinyl ether to form 2,3‐epoxypropyl‐1‐ethoxyethyl ether and then copolymerized with ethylene oxide by the initiation of a mixture of diphenylmethylpotassium and triethylene glycol to give the well‐defined polymer poly(ethylene oxide‐co‐2,3‐epoxypropyl‐1‐ethoxyethyl ether); the latter was hydrolyzed under acidic conditions, and then the recovered copolymer of ethylene oxide and glycidol {poly(ethylene oxide‐co‐glycidol) [poly(EO‐co‐Gly)]} with multiple pending hydroxymethyl groups was esterified with 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide to produce the macro‐ATRP initiator [poly(EO‐co‐Gly)(ATRP). The latter was used to initiate the polymerization of styrene to form the amphiphilic copolymer brushes. The object products and intermediates were characterized with 1H NMR, matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared, and size exclusion chromatography in detail. In all cases, the molecular weight distribution of the copolymer brushes was rather narrow (weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight < 1.2), and the linear dependence of ln[M0]/[M] (where [M0] is the initial monomer concentration and [M] is the monomer concentration at a certain time) on time demonstrated that the styrene polymerization was well controlled. This method has universal significance for the preparation of copolymer brushes with hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) as the main chain. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Biodegradable, amphiphilic, four‐armed poly(?‐caprolactone)‐block‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PCL‐b‐PEO) copolymers were synthesized by ring‐opening polymerization of ethylene oxide in the presence of four‐armed poly(?‐caprolactone) (PCL) with terminal OH groups with diethylzinc (ZnEt2) as a catalyst. The chemical structure of PCL‐b‐PEO copolymer was confirmed by 1H NMR and 13C NMR. The hydroxyl end groups of the four‐armed PCL were successfully substituted by PEO blocks in the copolymer. The monomodal profile of molecular weight distribution by gel permeation chromatography provided further evidence for the four‐armed architecture of the copolymer. Physicochemical properties of the four‐armed block copolymers differed from their starting four‐armed PCL precursor. The melting points were between those of PCL precursor and linear poly(ethylene glycol). The length of the outer PEO blocks exhibited an obvious effect on the crystallizability of the block copolymer. The degree of swelling of the four‐armed block copolymer increased with PEO length and PEO content. The micelle formation of the four‐armed block copolymer was examined by a fluorescent probe technique, and the existence of the critical micelle concentration (cmc) confirmed the amphiphilic nature of the resulting copolymer. The cmc value increased with increasing PEO length. The absolute cmc values were higher than those for linear amphiphilic block copolymers. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(ϵ-caprolactone)–poly(ethylene glycol)–poly(ϵ-caprolactone) triblock copolymers (PECL) covering a wide range of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) lengths were synthesized with alkali metal alkoxide derivatives of poly(ethylene glycol). The effects of various factors, such as amount of the initiator, reaction time and temperature, polarity of solvent, length of PEG segment, and counterion on the polymerization were investigated. The copolymers were characterized by 1H-NMR, IR, GPC, and DSC. It was found that THF system is superior to toluene system. The conversion of the monomer increased with increase of the initiator concentration. High molecular weight of the copolymer and high conversion of the monomer was obtained at below 30°C within 5 min. The polymerization process was studied by GPC and the coexistence of propagation and transesterification reaction was found, which leaded to relatively broad molecular weight distribution of the copolymers. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献
