We study a complex non-Newtonian fluid that models the flowof nematic liquid crystals. The fluid is described by a system that couples a forced Navier–Stokes system with a parabolic-type system. We prove the existence of global weak solutions in dimensions two and three.We show the existence of a Lyapunov functional for the smooth solutions of the coupled system and use cancellations that allow its existence to prove higher global regularity in dimension two. We also show the weak–strong uniqueness in dimension two.  相似文献

In this paper we study a class of Lorentz invariant nonlinear field equations in several space dimensions. The main purpose is to obtain soliton-like solutions. These equations were essentially proposed by C. H. Derrick in a celebrated paper in 1964 as a model for elementary particles. However, an existence theory was not developed. The fields are characterized by a topological invariant, the charge. We prove the existence of a static solution which minimizes the energy among the configurations with nontrivial charge. Moreover, under some symmetry assumptions, we prove the existence of infinitely many solutions, which are constrained minima of the energy. We study the global existence of solutions to a two-component generalized Hunter–Saxton system in the periodic setting. We first prove a persistence result for the solutions. Then for some particular choices of the parameters (α, κ), we show the precise blow-up scenarios and the existence of global solutions to the generalized Hunter–Saxton system under proper assumptions on the initial data. We study the asymptotic behaviors and quenching of the solutions for a two-component system of reaction–diffusion equations modeling prey–predator interactions in an insular environment. First, we give a global existence result for the solutions to the corresponding shadow system. Then, by constructing some suitable Lyapunov functionals, we characterize the asymptotic behaviors of global solutions to the shadow system. Also, we give a finite time quenching result for the shadow system. Finally, some global existence results for the original reaction–diffusion system are given.  相似文献

We consider the Vlasov-Fokker-Planek equation with a Newtonian, attracting potential and study its stationary solutions, given by the generalized Lane-Emden equation. In a two-dimensional domain we obtain the existence of a critical mass beyond which the system may admit a gravitational collapse. For a one-dimensional model we prove some results on existence, uniqueness, stability and symmetry-breaking of stationary solutions.  相似文献

The principal focus of the article is the construction of classical weak solutions of the initial value problem for a class of systems of viscoelasticity in arbitrary spatial dimension. The class of systems studied is large enough to incorporate certain requirements dictated by frame indifference and also has a structure which allows for a variational treatment of the time-discretized problem. Weak solutions for this system are constructed under certain monotonicity hypotheses and are shown to satisfy various a priori estimates, in particular giving improved regularity for the time derivative. Also measure-valued solutions are obtained under a uniform dissipation condition, which is much weaker than monotonicity. A special case of the viscoelastic system is the gradient flow of a non-convex potential, for which measure-valued solutions are here obtained, a new result in the vectorial case. Furthermore, in this setting it is possible to show that these measure-valued solutions satisfy a certain property which ensures they coincide with the classical weak solution when this exists, as for example in the convex case where existence and uniqueness are well known. We study the Euler equations for slightly compressible fluids, that is, after rescaling, the limits of the Euler equations of fluid dynamics as the Mach number tends to zero. In this paper, we consider the general non-isentropic equations and general data. We first prove the existence of classical solutions for a time independent of the small parameter. We study the existence and linear stability of stationary pulse solutions of an integro-differential equation modeling the coarse-grained averaged activity of a single layer of interconnected neurons. The neuronal connections considered feature lateral oscillations with an exponential rate of decay and variable period. We identify regions in the parameter space where solutions exhibit areas of excitation with single- and dimpled-pulses. When the gain function reduces to the Heaviside function, we establish existence of single-pulse solutions analytically. For a more general gain function, we include numerical support of the existence of pulse-like solutions. We then study the linear stability behavior of these solutions.  相似文献

We study the global-in-time behavior of solutions to a reaction–diffusion system with mass conservation, as proposed in the study of cell polarity, particularly, the second model of the work by Otsuji et al. (PLoS Comput Biol 3:e108, 2007). First, we show the existence of a Lyapunov function and confirm the global-in-time existence of the solution with compact orbit. Then we study the stability and instability of stationary solutions by using the semi-unfolding-minimality property and the spectral comparison. As a result the dynamics near the stationary solutions is qualitatively characterized by a variational function.  相似文献

We study the differential system governing the flow of an incompressible ferrofluid under the action of a magnetic field. The system consists of the Navier–Stokes equations, the angular momentum equation, the magnetization equation, and the magnetostatic equations. We prove, by using the Galerkin method, a global in time existence of weak solutions with finite energy of an initial boundary-value problem and establish the long-time behavior of such solutions. The main difficulty is due to the singularity of the gradient magnetic force.   相似文献

We study a slowly varying planar Hamiltonian system modeling shallow water sloshing. Using the Conley index theory for fast-slow systems of ODEs, we prove the existence of complicated dynamics in the system which is described in terms of symbolic sequences of integers. We study the existence of families of periodic solutions in a neighbourhood of a symmetric equilibrium point in two classes of Hamiltonian systems with involutory symmetry. In both classes, the involution reverses the sign of the Hamiltonian function, and the system is in 1:1 resonance. In the first class we study a Hamiltonian system with a reversing involution R acting symplectically. We first recover a result of Buzzi and Lamb showing that the equilibrium point is contained in a three dimensional conical subspace which consists of a two parameter family of periodic solutions with symmetry R, and furthermore that there may or may not exist two families of non-symmetric periodic solutions, depending on the coefficients of the Hamiltonian (correcting a minor error in their paper). In the second problem we study an equivariant Hamiltonian system with a symmetry S that acts anti-symplectically. Generically, there is no S-symmetric solution in a neighbourhood of the equilibrium point. Moreover, we prove the existence of at least 2 and at most 12 families of non-symmetric periodic solutions. We conclude with a brief study of systems with both forms of symmetry, showing they have very similar structure to the system with symmetry R.  相似文献

We study a system of ordinary differential equations in B(H){\mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H})} , the space of all bounded linear operators on a separable Hilbert space H{\mathcal{H}} . The system considered is a natural generalization of the Oja–Cox–Adams learning models. We establish the local existence of solutions and solve explicitly the system for a class of initial conditions. For such cases, we also characterize the asymptotic behavior of solutions.  相似文献

We construct variational hierarchical two-dimensional models for elastic, prismatic shells of variable thickness vanishing at boundary. With the help of variational methods, existence and uniqueness theorems for the corresponding two-dimensional boundary value problems are proved in appropriate weighted functional spaces. By means of the solutions of these two-dimensional boundary value problems, a sequence of approximate solutions in the corresponding three-dimensional region is constructed. We establish that this sequence converges in the Sobolev space H1 to the solution of the original three-dimensional boundary value problem. We use a shooting method to show the existence of traveling wave fronts and to obtain an explicit expression of minimum wave speed for a class of diffusive predator?Cprey systems. The existence of traveling wave fronts indicates the existence of a transition zone from a boundary equilibrium to a co-existence steady state and the minimum wave speed measures the asymptotic speed of population spread in some sense. Our approach is a significant improvement of techniques introduced by Dunbar. The advantage of our method is that it does not need the notion of Wazewski??s set and LaSalle??s invariance principle used in Dunbar??s approach. In our approach, we convert the equations for traveling wave solutions to a system of first order equations by a ??non-traditional transformation??. With this converted new system, we are able to construct a Liapunov function, which gives an immediate implication of the boundedness and convergence of the relevant class of heteroclinic orbits. Our method provides a more efficient way to study the existence of traveling wave solutions for general predator?Cprey systems.  相似文献
