We analyze the deviations from Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics found in recent experiments studying velocity distributions in two-dimensional granular gases driven into a non-equilibrium stationary state by a strong vertical vibration. We show that in its simplest version, the “stochastic thermostat” model of heated inelastic hard spheres, contrary to what has been hitherto stated, is incompatible with the experimental data, although predicting a reminiscent high-velocity stretched-exponential behavior with an exponent 3/2. The experimental observations lead to refine a recently proposed random restitution coefficient model. Very good agreement is then found with experimental velocity distributions within this framework, which appears self-consistent and further provides relevant probes to investigate the universality of the velocity statistics. The electromagnetic form factor of the kaon meson is calculated in the light-cone formalism of the relativistic constituent quark model. The calculated K+ form factor is consistent with almost all of the available experimental data at low-energy scale, while other properties of the kaon could also be interrelated in this representation with reasonable parameters. Predictions of the form factors for the charged and neutral kaons at a higher-energy scale are also given, and we find the non-zero K0 form factor at Q 2≠ 0 due to the mass difference between the strange and down quarks inside K0. NMR of laser-polarized xenon is used to probe the dissolution behaviour of the noble gas in different liquids. The dissolution and self-relaxation rates are extracted via a macroscopic model, and comparison of the decay rate of the xenon magnetization in deuterated and non-deuterated solvent pairs allows the determination of the pure dipole-dipole contribution to relaxation. A transient convective effect, tentatively assigned to the xenon concentration gradient, is observed and characterized by diffusion encoding MRI experiments. The flow of xenon penetrates inside the solvent near the walls of the NMR tube, the longitudinal images showing a “” shape, the transverse ones a “O” shape. This convection effect has implications for delivery conditions of laser-polarized xenon in continuous flow experiments and magnetic resonance imaging. The nuclear shell model predicts that the next doubly magic shell-closure beyond 208Pb is at a proton number between Z = 114 and 126 and at a neutron number N = 184. The outstanding aim of experimental investigations is the exploration of this region of spherical “Superheavy Elements”. This article describes the experiments that were performed at the GSI SHIP. They resulted in an unambiguous identification of elements 107 to 112. They were negative so far in searching for elements 113, 116 and 118 at SHIP; however, positive results were reported from experiments in Dubna on elements 114 and 116 and from experiments in Berkeley on element 118. The measured decay data are compared with theoretical predictions. Some aspects concerning the reaction mechanism and the use of radioactive beams are also presented. Organic compounds exhibiting the smectic C phase are made of rod-like molecules that have dipolar groups with lateral components. We argue that the off-axis character of the lateral dipolar groups can account for tilt in layered smectics (SmC, SmC*, SmI etc.). We develop a mean-field theory of the smectic C phase based on a single-particle potential of the form U C ∝ sin(2θ)cosφ, consistent with the biaxial nature of the phase, where θ and φ are the polar and azimuthal angles, respectively. The hard-rod interactions that favour the smectic A phase with zero tilt angle are also included. The theoretical phase diagrams compare favourably with experimental trends. Our theory also leads to the following results: i) a first-order smectic C to smectic A transition above some value of the McMillan parameter α, leading to a tricritical point on the smectic C to smectic A transition line and ii) a first-order smectic C to smectic C transition over a very small range of values of the model parameters. We have also extended the theory to include the next higher-order term in the tilting potential and to include the effect of different tilt angles for the molecular core and the chain in the SmC phase. The lifetime of the Λ-hyperon in heavy hypernuclei measured in proton-Au, -Bi and -U collisions by the COSY-13 Collaboration at COSY-Jülich has been analyzed to yield τΛ = (145±11) ps. This value for τΛ is compatible with the lifetime extracted from antiproton annihilation on Bi and U targets, albeit much more accurate. Theoretical models based on the meson exchange picture and assuming the validity of the phenomenological ΔI = 1/2 rule predict the lifetime of heavy hypernuclei to be significantly larger (2-3 standard deviations). Such large differences indicate that at least one of the assumptions in these models is not fulfilled. A much better reproduction of the lifetimes of heavy hypernuclei is achieved in the phase space model, if the ΔI = 1/2 rule is discarded in the nonmesonic Λ decay. The production of K+-mesons in proton-nucleus collisions from 1.0 to 2.5GeV is analyzed with respect to one-step nucleon-nucleon ( NNNYK +) and two-step Δ-nucleon ( ΔNK + YN) or pion-nucleon ( πNK + Y) production channels on the basis of a coupled-channel transport approach (CBUU) including the kaon final-state interactions. The influence of momentum-dependent potentials for the nucleon, hyperon and kaon in the final state are studied as well as the importance of K+ elastic rescattering in the target nucleus. The transport calculations are compared to the experimental K+ spectra taken at LBL Berkeley, SATURNE, CELSIUS, GSI and COSY-Jülich. It is found that the momentum-dependent baryon potentials affect the excitation function of the K+ cross-section; at low bombarding energies of ∼ 1.0GeV the attractive baryon potentials in the final state lead to a relative enhancement of the kaon yield, whereas the net repulsive potential at bombarding energies ∼ 2GeV causes a decrease of the K+ cross-section. Furthermore, it is pointed out that especially the K+ spectra at low momenta (or kinetic energy T K) allow to determine the in-medium K+ potential almost model independently due to a relative shift of the K+ spectra in kinetic energy that arises from the acceleration of the kaons when propagating out of the nuclear medium to free space, i.e. converting the potential energy to the kinetic energy of the free kaon. The even-even nucleus 136Nd was studied via in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy using the 16O + 125Te reaction at 100 MeV and the EUROBALL array. One new dipole band was observed. Together with a previously identified dipole band, whose position in the level scheme is revised, the new band forms a doublet structure similar to the recently observed chiral bands in the odd-odd neighboring nuclei. This would be the first case of a chiral doublet in an even-even nucleus. We present the experimental and theoretical background of a method to characterize the protein-protein attractive potential induced by one of the mostly used crystallizing agents in the protein-field, the poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG). This attractive interaction is commonly called, in colloid physics, the depletion interaction. Small-Angle X-ray Scattering experiments and numerical treatments based on liquid-state theories were performed on urate oxidase-PEG mixtures with two different PEGs (3350 Da and 8000 Da). A “two-component” approach was used in which the polymer-polymer, the protein-polymer and the protein-protein pair potentials were determined. The resulting effective protein-protein potential was characterized. This potential is the sum of the free-polymer protein-protein potential and of the PEG-induced depletion potential. The depletion potential was found to be hardly dependent upon the protein concentration but strongly function of the polymer size and concentration. Our results were also compared with two models, which give an analytic expression for the depletion potential. The nuclear magnetic moment of the ground state of 57Cu(Iπ = 3/2-, T1/2 = 196.3 ms) has been measured to be |μ(57Cu)| = (2.00 ±0.05) μN using the β-NMR technique. Together with the known magnetic moment of the mirror partner 57Ni, the spin expectation value was extracted as = -0.78 ± 0.13. Discrepancy between present results and shell model calculations in the full fp shell implies significant shell breaking at 56Ni with the neutron number N = 28.  相似文献

The influence of final-state NN and πN rescattering in incoherent pion photoproduction on the deuteron has been investigated. For the elementary photoproduction operator an effective Lagrangian model is used which describes well the elementary reaction. The interactions in the final two-body subsystems are taken in separable form. While NN rescattering shows quite a significant effect, particularly strong for neutral pion production, πN rescattering is almost negligible. Inclusion of such effects leads to an improved and quite satisfactory agreement with experiment. The beta-decay of the N = Z, even-even nucleus 72Kr has been studied at the ISOLDE PSB facility at CERN. Measurements of βγ and βγγ coincidences have enriched the decay scheme of the daughter nucleus 72Br with 27 new low spin levels. A more precise half-life of T 1/2 = 17.1(2) s has been determined. Strong feeding to the 72Br ground state is established yielding an unambiguous J π = 1+ assignment for this state. Candidates for the 72Br g.s. wave function are discussed in the framework of a self-consistent deformed mean-field calculation with SG2 Skyrme force and pairing correlations. A search for beta-delayed particle emission was made and an upper limit of 10-6 for this decay branch obtained. The cumulated experimental level density of 1+ states has been fitted with the constant temperature formula. The comparison indicates that most likely all 1+ levels up to 1.2 MeV have been observed in this investigation. The corresponding nearest-neighbour level spacing does not follow a Poisson distribution. The Gamow-Teller strength distribution is compared, in terms of nuclear deformation, with different calculations made in the framework of the quasiparticle random phase approximation. Gamma-ray tracking in a closed array of highly segmented HPGe detectors is a new concept for the detection of γ-radiation. Each of the interacting γ-rays is identified and separated by measuring the energies and positions of individual interactions and by applying tracking algorithms to reconstruct the scattering sequences, even if many γ-rays hit the array at the same time. The three-dimensional position and the energy of interactions are determined by using two-dimensionally segmented Ge detectors along with pulse-shape analysis of the signals. Such a detector will have new and much improved capabilities compared to current γ-ray spectrometer. One implementation of this concept, called GRETA (Gamma-Ray Energy Tracking Array), is currently being under development at LBNL. Using the method which retains the rotation symmetry of spin components in the paramagnetic state and has no preset magnetic ordering, spectral and magnetic properties of the two-dimensional t-J model in the normal state are investigated for the ranges of hole concentrations 0 ⩽ x ⩽ 0.16 and temperatures 0.01tT ⩽ 0.2t. The used hopping t and exchange J parameters of the model correspond to hole-doped cuprates. The obtained solutions are homogeneous which indicates that stripes and other types of phase separation are not connected with the strong electron correlations described by the model. A series of nearly equidistant maxima in the hole spectral function calculated for low T and x is connected with hole vibrations in the region of the perturbed short-range antiferromagnetic order. The hole spectrum has a pseudogap in the vicinity of (0,π) and (π, 0). For x ≈ 0.05 the shape of the hole Fermi surface is transformed from four small ellipses around (±π/2,±π/2) to two large rhombuses centered at (0, 0) and (π,π). The calculated temperature and concentration dependencies of the spin correlation length and the magnetic susceptibility are close to those observed in cuprate perovskites. These results offer explanations for the observed scaling of the static uniform susceptibility and for the changes in the spin-lattice relaxation and spin-echo decay rates in terms of the temperature and doping variations in the spin excitation spectrum of the model. Electron scattering Coulomb form factors for the single-particle quadrupole transitions in p-shell and sd-shell nuclei have been studied. Core polarization effects are included through a microscopic theory that includes excitations from the core orbits up to higher orbits with 2ω excitations. The modified surface delta interaction is adopted as a residual interaction. The results are discussed for the ( 1p 1/2 -1↦1p 3/2 -1) proton transition in 15N, ( 1d 5/2↦2s 1/2) neutron transition in 17O and ( 1d 3/2 -1↦2s 1/2 -1) proton transition in 39K. The inclusion of core polarization effects modifies the form factors markedly and describes the experimental data very well in both the absolute strength and the momentum transfer dependence. The associative charm particles production in nucleon-nucleon collisions N + N↦Λcc) + ˉD + N, is described in a general way and the spin and isospin structure of the corresponding matrix elements are derived. Using an analogy with strange-particle (ΛK) production, the D-meson exchange model is considered in detail. Estimations of the energy behavior of the threshold cross-sections show a large dependence on the form of the phenomenological hadron form factors and indicate that, at threshold, the cross-section is three orders of magnitude smaller than for strange-particle production. We analyze the problem of vesicle migration in haptotaxis (a motion directed by an adhesion gradient), though most of the reasoning applies to chemotaxis as well as to a variety of driving forces. A brief account has been published on this topic [#!Cantat99a!#]. We present an extensive analysis of this problem and provide a basic discussion of most of the relevant processes of migration. The problem allows for an arbitrary shape evolution which is compatible with the full hydrodynamical flow in the Stokes limit. The problem is solved within the boundary integral formulation based on the Oseen tensor. For the sake of simplicity we confine ourselves to 2D flows in the numerical analysis. There are basically two regimes (i) the tense regime where the vesicle behaves as a “droplet” with an effective contact angle. In that case the migration velocity is given by the Stokes law. (ii) The flask regime where the vesicle has a significant (on the scale of the vesicle size) contact curvature. In that case we obtain a new migration law which substantially differs from the Stokes law. We develop general arguments in order to extract analytical laws of migration. These are in good agreement with the full numerical analysis. Finally we mention several important future issues and open questions. Differential cross-sections for quasi-free Compton scattering from the proton and neutron bound in the deuteron have been measured using the Glasgow/Mainz photon tagging spectrometer at the Mainz MAMI accelerator together with the Mainz [48]cm ;SPMOslash; × [64]cm NaI(Tl) photon detector and the G?ttingen SENECA recoil detector. The data cover photon energies ranging from [200]MeV to [400]MeV at θLAB γ = 136.2°. Liquid deuterium and hydrogen targets allowed direct comparison of free and quasi-free scattering from the proton. The neutron detection efficiency of the SENECA detector was measured via the reaction p(γ,π+ n). The “free” proton Compton scattering cross-sections extracted from the bound proton data are in reasonable agreement with those for the free proton which gives confidence in the method to extract the differential cross-section for free scattering from quasi-free data. Differential cross-sections on the free neutron have been extracted and the difference of the electromagnetic polarizabilities of the neutron has been determined to be αn - βn = 9.8±3.6(stat)+2.1 -1.1(syst)±2.2(model) in units of [10-4]fm 3. In combination with the polarizability sum αn + βn = 15.2±0.5 deduced from photoabsorption data, the neutron electric and magnetic polarizabilities, αn = 12.5±1.8(stat)+1.1 -0.6(syst)±1.1(model) and βn = 2.7±1.8(stat)+0.6 -1.1(syst)±1.1(model) are obtained. The backward spin polarizability of the neutron was determined to be γ(n) π = (58.6±4.0)×10-4 fm 4.
