This paper studies the Fermat point in Hilbert spaces for a system of n distinct points. We prove the existence of the Fermat point and we determine its location in the convex hull of the given system of points. A new concept of Fermat point for a non–discrete set of points is introduced and there are proved similar results to discrete case. In the second part of this paper we give close form formulas of Fermat point for a system of 3 and 4 distinct points. We also describe some iterative methods to find the Fermat point for a system of more than 4 distinct points.  相似文献

In this paper, we discuss the relationship among the generalized Fermat, double Fermat, and Newton sequences. In particular, we show that every double Fermat sequence is a generalized Fermat sequence, and the set of generalized Fermat sequences, as well as the set of double Fermat sequences, is closed under term-by-term multiplication. We also prove that every Newton sequence is a generalized Fermat sequence and vice versa. Finally, we show that double Fermat sequences are Newton sequences generated by certain sequences of integers. An approach of symbolic dynamical systems is used to obtain congruence identities.  相似文献

IfPis an irreducible element of a polynomial ring over a finite field, then one can define a Fermat quotient function associated toP. This is the direct analog of the traditional Fermat quotient function defined over the rational numbers using Fermat's “little” theorem. To discover derivatives, Pierre de Fermat used to assume a non-zero increment h in the incremental ratio and, after some calculations, to set h=0 in the final result. This method, which sounds as inconsistent, can be perfectly formalized with the Fermat–Reyes theorem about existence and uniqueness of a smooth incremental ratio. In the present work, we will introduce the cartesian closed category where to study and prove this theorem and describe in general the Fermat method. The framework is the theory of Fermat reals, an extension of the real field containing nilpotent infinitesimals which does not need any knowledge of mathematical logic. This key theorem will be essential in the development of differential and integral calculus for smooth functions defined on the ring of Fermat reals and also for infinite-dimensional operators like derivatives and integrals.  相似文献

In this paper we first study some global properties of the energy functional on a non-reversible Finsler manifold. In particular we present a fully detailed proof of the Palais–Smale condition under the completeness of the Finsler metric. Moreover, we define a Finsler metric of Randers type, which we call Fermat metric, associated to a conformally standard stationary spacetime. We shall study the influence of the Fermat metric on the causal properties of the spacetime, mainly the global hyperbolicity. Moreover, we study the relations between the energy functional of the Fermat metric and the Fermat principle for the light rays in the spacetime. This allows one to obtain existence and multiplicity results for light rays, using the Finsler theory. Finally the case of timelike geodesics with fixed energy is considered.  相似文献

We prove a bound on sums of products of multiplicative characters of shifted Fermat quotients modulo p. This article attempts to explain Fermat's not quite obvious calculations connected with his deduction of the law of refraction in Analysis ad refractiones (1662), and to describe the development which led to these calculations. In 1657 Fermat tried to deduce a law of refraction based on the principle that light follows the quickest path between two given points. He did not succeed because he found that the calculations were too long and tedious. The calculations are indeed complicated, but if Fermat, in 1657, had been willing to accept Descartes' law of refraction he would probably also have seen that it solved his problem. However, Fermat was of the opinion that Descartes' law was wrong and, therefore, he did not expect that solution. Only in 1662, when he succeeded in reducing the calculations substantially, did he realize that they led to the sine law of Descartes.  相似文献

The prime motivation for the present study is a famous problem, allegedly first formulated in 1643 by Fermat, and the so-called Complementary Problem (CP), proposed but incorrectly solved in 1941 by Courant and Robbins. For a given triangle, Fermat asks for a fourth point such that the sum of its Euclidean distances, each weighted by +1, to the three given points is minimized. CP differs from Fermat in that the weight associated with one of these points is –1 instead of +1. The geometrical approach suggested in 1998 by Krarup for solving CP is here extended to cover any combination of positive and negative weights associated with the vertices of a given triangle. Among the by-products are surprisingly simple correctness proofs of the geometrical constructions of Torricelli (around 1645), Cavalieri (1647), Viviani (1659), Simpson (1750), and Martelli (1998). Furthermore, alternative proofs of Ptolemy's theorem (around A.D. 150) and an observation by Heinen (1834) are provided.  相似文献

We study the Jacobians of the genus 3 Picard and Fermat curves with respect to the problem of maximizing the minimum non-zero norm. We use criteria for symplectic lattices related to the criteria of perfect and eutactic for classical lattices.
