It has been proved recently that the spike timing can play an important role in information transmission, so in this paper we develop a network with N-unit FitzHugh--Nagumo neurons coupled by gap junctions and discuss the dependence of the spike timing precision on synaptic coupling strength, the noise intensity and the size of the neuron ensemble. The calculated results show that the spike timing precision decreases as the noise intensity increases; and the ensemble spike timing precision increases with coupling strength increasing. The electric synapse coupling has a more important effect on the spike timing precision than the chemical synapse coupling.

The spatiotemporal patterns and chaotic burst synchronization of a small-world neuronal network are studied in this paper. The synchronization parameter, similarity parameter and order parameter are introduced to investigate the dynamics behaviour of the neurons. Chaotic burst synchronization and nearly complete synchronization can be observed if the link probability and the coupling strength are large enough. It is found that with increasing link probability and the coupling strength chaotic bursts become appreciably synchronous in space and coherent in time, and the maximal spatiotemporal order appears at some particular values of the probability and the coupling strength, respectively. The larger the size of the network, the smaller the probability and the coupling strength are needed for the network to achieve burst synchronization. Moreover, the bursting activity and the spatiotemporal patterns are robust to small noise.

Synchronous firing of neurons is thought to be important for information communication in neuronal networks. This paper investigates the complete and phase synchronization in a heterogeneous small-world chaotic Hindmarsh--Rose neuronal network. The effects of various network parameters on synchronization behaviour are discussed with some biological explanations. Complete synchronization of small-world neuronal networks is studied theoretically by the master stability function method. It is shown that the coupling strength necessary for complete or phase synchronization decreases with the neuron number, the node degree and the connection density are increased. The effect of heterogeneity of neuronal networks is also considered and it is found that the network heterogeneity has an adverse effect on synchrony.

The coherence resonance (CR) of globally coupled Hodgkin-Huxley neurons is studied. When the neurons are set in the subthreshold regime near the firing threshold, the additive noise induces limit cycles. The coherence of the system is optimized by the noise. The coupling of the network can enhance CR in two different ways. In particular, when the coupling is strong enough, the synchronization of the system is induced and optimized by the noise. This synchronization leads to a high and wide plateau in the local CR curve. A bell-shaped curve is found for the peak height of power spectra of the spike train, being significantly different from a monotonic behavior for the single neuron. The local-noise-induced limit cycle can evolve to a refined spatiotemporal order through the dynamical optimization among the autonomous oscillation of an individual neuron, the coupling of the network, and the local noise.

In this paper, we study the dynamics of a system of two model neurons interacting via the electrical synapse. Each neuron is described by a two-dimensional discontinuous map. A chaotic relaxational-type attractor, which corresponds to the spiking-bursting chaotic oscillations of neurons is shown to exist in a four-dimensional phase space. It is found that the dynamical mechanism of formation of chaotic bursts is based on a new phenomenon of generation of transient chaotic oscillations. It is demonstrated that transition from the chaotic-burst generation to the state of relative rest occurs with a certain time delay. A new characteristic which estimates the degree of synchronization of the spiking-bursting oscillations is introduced. The dependence of the synchronization degree on the strength of coupling of the ensemble elements is studied.

Pattern synchronization in a two-layer neuronal network is studied. For a single-layer network of Rulkov map neurons, there are three kinds of patterns induced by noise. Additive noise can induce ordered patterns at some intermediate noise intensities in a resonant way; however, for small and large noise intensities there exist excitable patterns and disordered patterns, respectively. For a neuronal network coupled by two single-layer networks with noise intensity differences between layers, we find that the two-layer network can achieve synchrony as the interlayer coupling strength increases. The synchronous states strongly depend on the interlayer coupling strength and the noise intensity difference between layers.

Ordered bursting synchronization and complex propagation are investigated for a ring neuronal network in which each neuron exhibits chaotic bursting behaviour. The neurons become more and more synchronous in chaotic bursting as the synaptic strength is increased. It is shown that excitatory chemical synapses can effectively tame the chaos, and ordered bursting synchronization can be observed as the synaptic strength is further increased. However, synchronization among neurons is weakened as the number of neurons is increased. More importantly, it is shown that ordered bursting synchronization can be turned into spiking synchronization at certain noise intensity. Complex spatio-temporal patterns propagating towards both sides of pacemaker are found in this network before the emergence of spiking synchronization.

A system of Hindmarsh-Rose relay neurons with time delay coupling is considered in which the relay (central) neuron has an additional feedback term that represents the interaction activity with a local environment. The strength of environmental coupling with the central neuron plays an important role in inducing synchronization and de-synchronization between the outer neurons. The strength of feedback developed from the environmental coupling has created a gradual quenching in the oscillations of the central neuron. At a higher feedback coupling strength, oscillation of the central neuron is suppressed drastically and a transition from a regime of synchronization to out-of-phase synchronization take place between the oscillations of the two outer neurons.

Based on recently sleeping cellular substrates, a network model synaptically coupled by N three-cell circuits is provided. Simulation results show that: (i) the dynamic behavior of every circuit is chaotic; (ii) the synchronization of the network is incomplete; (iii) the incomplete synchronization can integrate burst firings of cortical cells into waxing-and-wanning EEG spindle waves. These results enlighten us that this kind of incomplete synchronization may integrate microscopic, electrical activities of neurons in billions into macroscopic, functional states in human brain. In addition, the effects of coupling strength, connectional mode and noise to the synchronization are discussed.

Order Parameter Hysteresis on the Complex Network
Collective synchronization is investigated on the small-world network (NW model). The order parameter is introduced to measure the synchronization of phase. It is found that there are differences between the processes of synchronization and desynchronization. The dependence of order parameter on the coupling strength is shown like a hysteresis loop. The size of the loop demonstrates the non-monotonicity with the change of adding probability, and is relevant to the construction of the network. The area may be maximum, as the adding probability is equal to 0.4. This phenomenon indicates that the clusters in the network play an important role in the processes of synchronization and desynchronization.

We present here some studies on noise-induced order and synchronous firing in a system of bidirectionally coupled generic type-I neurons. We find that transitions from unsynchronized to completely synchronized states occur beyond a critical value of noise strength that has a clear functional dependence on neuronal coupling strength and input values. For an inhibitory-excitatory (IE) synaptic coupling, the approach to a partially synchronized state is shown to vary qualitatively depending on whether the input is less or more than a critical value. We find that introduction of noise can cause a delay in the bifurcation of the firing pattern of the excitatory neuron for IE coupling.

We study the firing synchronization behavior of the inhomogeneous excitable media. Phase synchronization of neuron firings is observed with increasing the coupling, while the phases of neurons are different (out-of-phase synchronization). We found the synchronization of bursts can be greatly enhanced by applying an external forcing (in-phase synchronization). The external forcing can be either a periodic or just homogeneous thermal noise. The mechanism responsible for this enhancement is discussed.

For an oscillating circuit or coupled circuits, damage in electric devices such as inductor, resistance, memristor even capacitor can cause breakdown or collapse of the circuits. These damage could be associated with external attack or aging in electric devices, and then the bifurcation parameters could be deformed from normal values. Resonators or signal generators are often synchronized to produce powerful signal series and this problem could be investigated by using synchronization in network. Complete synchronization could be induced by linear coupling in a two-dimensional network of identical oscillators when the coupling intensity is beyond certain threshold. The collective behavior and synchronization state are much dependent on the bifurcation parameters. Any slight fluctuation in parameter and breakdown in bifurcation parameter can cause transition of synchronization even collapse of synchronization in the network. In this paper,a two-dimensional network composed of the resonators coupled with memristors under nearestneighbor connection is designed, and the network can reach complete synchronization by carefully selecting coupling intensity. The network keeps synchronization after certain transient period, then a bifurcation parameter in a resonator is switched from the previous value and the adjacent resonators(oscillators) are affected in random. It is found that the synchronization area could be invaded greatly in a diffusive way. The damage area size is much dependent on the selection of diffusive period of damage and deformation degree in the parameter. Indeed, the synchronization area could keep intact at largest size under intermediate deformation degree and coupling intensity.

Average synchronization and temporal order characterized by the rate of firing are studied in a spatially extended network system with the coupling time delay, which is locally modelled by a two-dimensional Rulkov map neuron. It is shown that there exists an optimal noise level, where average synchronization and temporal order are maximum irrespective of the coupling time delay. Furthermore, it is found that temporal order is weakened when the coupling time delay appears. However, the coupling time delay has a twofold effect on average synchronization, one associated with its increase, the other with its decrease. This clearly manifests that random perturbations and time delay play a complementary role in synchronization and temporal order.

The Hodgkin-Huxley (H-H) neuron model driven by stimuli just above threshold shows a noise-induced response delay with respect to time to the first spike for a certain range of noise strengths, an effect called “noise delayed decay” (NDD). We study the response time of a network of coupled H-H neurons, and investigate how the NDD can be affected by the connection topology of the network and the coupling strength. We show that the NDD effect exists for weak and intermediate coupling strengths, whereas it disappears for strong coupling strength regardless of the connection topology. We also show that although the network structure has very little effect on the NDD for a weak coupling strength, the network structure plays a key role for an intermediate coupling strength by decreasing the NDD effect with the increasing number of random shortcuts, and thus provides an additional operating regime, that is absent in the regular network, in which the neurons may also exploit a spike time code.
