Using the Glauber model,we discuss the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions in heavy-ion collisions.Based on the latter, after considering the effect of energy loss of the nucleons in multiple collisions,we derive the pseudorapidity distribution of the multiplicity as a function of the impact parameter in nucleus-nucleus collisions.Using this,we analyze the experimental measurements carried out by the BRAHMS Collaboration in Au+Au collisions at √SNN=200 GeV.The results are in good agreement with the experimental observations.

The transverse momentum distributions of final-state particles produced in collisions at high energies are studied by using a two-component Rayleigh-like distribution. This representation is based on Liu's multisource ideal gas model which describes protons and fragments in high energy nucleus-nucleus collisions. The calculated results are in good agreement with the experimental data of Au-Au, Cu-Cu, d-Au, and pp collisions at the relativistic heavy ion collider energies. The experimental particle momentum distributions of p-Be collisions at 6.4, 12.3, and 17.5 GeV/c, as well as Au-Au collisions at 1.5 AGeV are well described by a model based on a single Rayleigh-like distribution of particle transverse momenta.

The study of projectile excitation of high-Z ions in collisions with light target atoms is a powerful tool for the investigation of magnetic and higher-order effects occurring in relativistic collisions. Very first investigations performed for bismuth ions were recently extended at the ESR storage ring by using He-like uranium ions in collisions with gaseous targets. At the ESR jet target, the absence of solid-state effects (e.g., multiple collisions) allows one to study higher order processes, such as excitation and ionization or excitation and capture, occurring in single collisions. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

The ART model is applied to study the deformed UU collision at HIRFL-CSR energy area corresponding to the high baryon density region in the QCD phase diagram. The time evolution of central baryon (energy) densities in central collisions at Eb =0.52GeV/u shows that different orientation collisions will lead to different lifetimes of high density, especially tip--tip UU collisions which have an extend lifetime for the high density phase by almost a factor of 2 compared to the body--body orientation collisions. In order to pick out the interesting tip--tip like events from a mass of random orientation collisions, we study the relation between stopping power R and impact parameter b in different orientation collisions and find that it can enhance the purity of tip--tip like events when R increases. Therefore, the high density and long lifetime events can be effectively distinguished by R selection.

We present spectra of charged hadrons from Au+Au and d+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV measured with the BRAHMS experiment at RHIC. The spectra for different collision centralities are compared to spectra from p+(-)p collisions at the same energy scaled by the number of binary collisions. The resulting ratios (nuclear modification factors) for central Au+Au collisions at eta=0 and eta=2.2 evidence a strong suppression in the high p(T) region (>2 GeV/c). In contrast, the d+Au nuclear modification factor (at eta=0) exhibits an enhancement of the high p(T) yields. These measurements indicate a high energy loss of the high p(T) particles in the medium created in the central Au+Au collisions. The lack of suppression in d+Au collisions makes it unlikely that initial state effects can explain the suppression in the central Au+Au collisions.

In relativistic heavy ion collisions, heavy flavor is expected to result predominately from initial hard parton–parton scatterings. Hence, in the absence of later stage effects, the production of heavy flavor in A+A collisions can be viewed as a superposition of N+N collisions. Measurements of v2 or RAA of heavy flavor (or their decay electrons) in A+A collisions violate the simple superposition picture and therefore present themselves as probes of the medium formed in such collisions. On the basis of the measured v2 and RAA of non-photonic single electrons in A+A collisions at RHIC, we will investigate the interplay between these observables as well as the restrictions they pose for charm and bottom production.

Azimuthal correlations for large transverse momentum charged hadrons have been measured over a wide pseudorapidity range and full azimuth in Au+Au and p+p collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV. The small-angle correlations observed in p+p collisions and at all centralities of Au+Au collisions are characteristic of hard-scattering processes previously observed in high-energy collisions. A strong back-to-back correlation exists for p+p and peripheral Au+Au. In contrast, the back-to-back correlations are reduced considerably in the most central Au+Au collisions, indicating substantial interaction as the hard-scattered partons or their fragmentation products traverse the medium.

The NA50 Collaboration has recently observed that the J/psi production rate in Pb-Pb collisions decreases more rapidly as a function of the transverse energy for the most central collisions than for less central ones. We show that this phenomenon can be understood as an effect of transverse energy fluctuations in central collisions. A good fit of the data is obtained using a model which relates J/psi suppression to the local energy density. Our results suggest that the J/psi is completely suppressed at the highest densities achieved in Pb-Pb collisions.

We design a nematic collider for controlled out-of-equilibrium anisotropic aggregation of spherical colloidal particles. The nematic surrounding imparts dipolar interactions among the spheres. A bidirectional backflow of the nematic liquid crystal in a periodic electric field forces the spheres to collide with each other. The inelastic collisions are of two types, head to tail and head to head. Head-to-tail collisions of dipoles result in longitudinal aggregation while head-to-head collisions promote aggregation in the transversal direction. The frequency of head-to-head collisions is set by the impact parameter that controls the resulting shape of aggregates, their anisotropy, and fractal dimension.

We study the effect of spatially homogeneous and inhomogeneous shadowing on J/psi production in deuterium-nucleus collisions. We discuss how the shadowing and its spatial dependence can be measured by comparing central and peripheral dA collisions. These event classes may be selected by using gray protons from heavy ion breakup and events where the proton or neutron in the deuterium does not interact. We find that inhomogeneous shadowing has a significant effect on central dA collisions, larger than expected in central AA collisions. Results are presented for dAu collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV and dPb collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=6.2 TeV.

By employing the Glauber model, we give the centrality dependences of the numbers of participants and binary nucleon-nucleon collisions in nucleus-nucleus collisions. By taking into account the energy loss of the participants in their multiple collisions, we then present the pseudorapidity distributions of charged particles in nucleus-nucleus collisions as a function of beam energy and impact parameter. Finally, we analyze the centrality dependence of the pseudorapidity of the charged particles in Au+Au collisions at energies from √sNN=19.6 to 200 GeV.The theoretical results are in good agreement with the experimental observations of the RHIC-PHOBOS collaboration.

The final state particle multiplicity distributions in high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions are described by two different sub-distributious contributed by a single nucleon. The Monte Carlo calculated results from the two sub-distributions and the participant-spectator model are compared and found to be in agreement with the experimental data of Au-Au collisions ats=130 AGeV and Pb-Pb collisions at 158 AGeV.

The evolution of on-site number fluctuations of ultracold atoms in optical lattices is experimentally investigated by monitoring the suppression of spin-changing collisions across the superfluid-Mott insulator transition. For low atom numbers, corresponding to an average filling factor close to unity, large on-site number fluctuations are necessary for spin-changing collisions to occur. The continuous suppression of spin-changing collisions is thus direct evidence for the emergence of number-squeezed states. In the Mott insulator regime, we find that spin-changing collisions are suppressed until a threshold atom number, consistent with the number where a Mott plateau with doubly occupied sites is expected to form.

Multiplicity fluctuation of the target residues emitted in the interactions in a wide range of projectile energies from 500 A MeV to 60 A GeV is investigated in the framework of two-dimensional scaled factorial moment methodology. The evidence of non-statistical multiplicity fluctuation is found in 16 O-AgBr collisions at 60 A GeV,but not in 56 Fe-AgBr collisions at 500 A MeV,84 Kr-AgBr collisions at 1.7 A GeV,16 O-AgBr collisions at 3.7 A GeV and 197 Au-AgBr collisions at 10.7 A GeV.

We develop a perturbation theory to analytically calculate the effects of complete and incomplete interchannel collisions of Gaussian pulses in a wavelength-division-multiplexed system with strong dispersion management. We show that, for complete collisions, the collision-induced frequency shift of a Gaussian pulse is negligible, whereas its position shift is significant and can be found in a simple analytical form. For strong dispersion management we find that incomplete collisions can be neglected, whereas for dispersion management of moderate strength the contribution of the incomplete collisions can be significant. The analytical predictions are in satisfactory agreement with numerical results. We also give an estimate of the limit imposed on the transmission distance by such collisions.

We report measurements of single-particle inclusive spectra and two-particle azimuthal distributions of charged hadrons at high transverse momentum (high p(T)) in minimum bias and central d+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV. The inclusive yield is enhanced in d+Au collisions relative to binary-scaled p+p collisions, while the two-particle azimuthal distributions are very similar to those observed in p+p collisions. These results demonstrate that the strong suppression of the inclusive yield and back-to-back correlations at high p(T) previously observed in central Au+Au collisions are due to final-state interactions with the dense medium generated in such collisions.
