A modified lattice Boltzmann model is proposed to describe shallow water flows over complex topography. In the proposed model, the quadratic depth term is excluded from the equilibrium distribution functions (EDFs), and the hydrostatic pressure term is combined with the bed slope term to be treated as a part of the sourcing term in the lattice Boltzmann equation (LBE). Therefore, it is unnecessary to match the coefficients of the quadratic depth term in the EDFs with those of the bed slope term in the sourcing terms in the LBE. This would bring more flexibility to the treatment of the sourcing terms in the LBE. In order to recover the shallow water equations (SWEs), the basic constraints are redefined, and under these constraints, the coefficients of the EDFs are derived afterwards. Several benchmark problems are used to validate the proposed model, including stationary case, steady flows over a two‐dimensional bump and tidal wave flows over irregular bed elevation. The computed results are in excellent agreement with the results of the other numerical methods and the analytical solutions, indicating that the proposed model is capable of simulating shallow water flows over complex bathymetry. It also proves that the proposed model has potential to produce competitive solutions to shallow water flows over complex bed topography. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Proper approximation of the force terms, especially the bed slope term, is of crucial importance to simulating shallow water flows in lattice Boltzmann (LB) models. However, there is little discussion on the schemes of adding force terms to LB models for shallow water equations (SWEs). In this study, we evaluate the performance of forcing schemes coupled with different LB models (LABSWE and MLBSWE) in simulating shallow water flows over complex topography and try to find out their intrinsic characteristics and applicability. Three cases are adopted for evaluation, including a stationary case, a one-dimensional tidal wave flow over an irregular bed, and a steady flow over a two-dimensional seamount. The simulating results are compared with analytical solutions or the results produced by the finite difference method. For LABSWE, all the forcing schemes, except for the weighting factor method, fail to produce accurate solutions for the test cases; this is probably due to the mismatch between the bed slope term in source terms and the quadratic depth term of the equilibrium distribution functions in these forcing schemes. For MLBSWE, all the forcing schemes are capable of simulating flows over the complex topography accurately; furthermore, those schemes taking into account the collision effect τ to eliminate the momentum induced by forces provide more accurate solutions with quicker convergence as the lattice size decreases. In this view, MLBSWE can bring more flexibility in treating the force terms and thus can be a better tool to simulate shallow water flows over complex topography in practical application.  相似文献

We apply the lattice Boltzmann (LB) method for solving the shallow water equations with source terms such as the bed slope and bed friction. Our aim is to use a simple and accurate representation of the source terms in order to simulate practical shallow water flows without relying on upwind discretization or Riemann problem solvers. We validate the algorithm on problems where analytical solutions are available. The numerical results are in good agreement with analytical solutions. Furthermore, we test the method on a practical problem by simulating mean flow in the Strait of Gibraltar. The main focus is to examine the performance of the LB method for complex geometries with irregular bathymetry. The results demonstrate its ability to capture the main flow features. In this paper some preliminary results concerning the application of the high‐order discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method for the resolution of realistic problems of tidal flows around shallow water islands are presented. In particular, tidal flows are computed around the Rattray island located in the Great Barrier Reef. This island is a standard benchmark problem well documented in the literature providing useful in situ measurements for validation of the model. Realistic elements of the simulation are a tidal flow forcing, a variable bathymetry and a non‐trivial coastline. The computation of tidal flows in shallow water around an island is very similar to the simulation of the Euler equations around bluff bodies in quasi‐steady flows. The main difference lies in the high irregularity of islands' shapes and in the fact that, in the framework of large‐scale ocean models, the number of elements to represent an island is drastically limited compared with classical engineering computations. We observe that the high‐order DG method applied to shallow water flows around bluff bodies with poor linear boundary representations produces oscillations and spurious eddies. Surprisingly those eddies may have the right size and intensity but may be generated by numerical diffusion and are not always mathematically relevant. Although not interested in solving accurately the boundary layers of an island, we show that a high‐order boundary representation is mandatory to avoid non‐physical eddies and spurious oscillations. It is then possible to parametrize accurately the subgrid‐scale processes to introduce the correct amount of diffusion in the model. The DG results around the Rattray island are eventually compared with current measurements and reveal good agreement. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

An adaptive spectral/hp discontinuous Galerkin method for the two‐dimensional shallow water equations is presented. The model uses an orthogonal modal basis of arbitrary polynomial order p defined on unstructured, possibly non‐conforming, triangular elements for the spatial discretization. Based on a simple error indicator constructed by the solutions of approximation order p and p?1, we allow both for the mesh size, h, and polynomial approximation order to dynamically change during the simulation. For the h‐type refinement, the parent element is subdivided into four similar sibling elements. The time‐stepping is performed using a third‐order Runge–Kutta scheme. The performance of the hp‐adaptivity is illustrated for several test cases. It is found that for the case of smooth flows, p‐adaptivity is more efficient than h‐adaptivity with respect to degrees of freedom and computational time. The phase-change problem is solved by the migration-collision scheme of lattice Boltzmann method. After formula derivation, we find that this method can give a rigorous numerical value for the phase-change temperature, which is of crucial importance. One-dimensional solidification in half-space and two-dimensional solidification in a corner are simulated. The phase change temperature and the liquid-solid interface are both obtained, and the results conform to the analytical solution.  相似文献

A method for modeling the propagation of discontinuous waves over a dry bed using the first approximation of shallow water theory is proposed. The method is based on a modified conservation law of total momentum that takes into account the concentrated momentum losses due to the formation of local turbulent vortex structures in the fluid surface layer at a discontinuous-wave front. A quantitative estimate of these losses is obtained by deriving the shallow water equations from the Navier-Stokes equations with allowance for viscosity, which has a rapidly increasing effect in the turbulent flow regions described by discontinuous waves. The stability of the discontinuous waves admitted by the modified system of conservation laws of shallow water theory is examined. As an example, a comparative analysis is performed of the solutions of the dam-break problem obtained for the classical and modified shallow water models. __________ Translated from Prikladnaya Mekhanika i Tekhnicheskaya Fizika, Vol. 48, No. 6, pp. 22–43, November–December, 2007  相似文献

Lattice Boltzmann Simulation of Fluid Flow in Synthetic Fractures   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Fractures play an important role in reservoir engineering as they dominate the fluid flow in the reservoir. All evidence suggests that rarely can one model flow and transport in a fractured rock consistently by treating it as a uniform or mildly nonuniform isotropic continuum. Instead, one must generally account for the highly erratic heterogeneity, directional dependence, dual or multicomponent nature and multiscale behavior of fractured rocks. As experimental methods are expensive and time consuming most of the time numerical methods are used to study flow and transport in a fractured rock. In this work, we present results of the numerical computations for single phase flow simulations through two-dimensional synthetically created fracture apertures. These synthetic rock fractures are created using different fractal dimensions, anisotropy factors, and mismatch lengths. Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM), which is a new computational approach suitable to simulate fluid flow especially in complex geometries, was then used to determine the permeability for different fractures. Regions of high velocity and low velocity flow were identified. The resulting permeability values were less than the ones obtained with the cubic law estimates. It has been found that as the mean aperture–fractal dimension ratio increased permeability increased. Moreover as the anisotropy factor increased permeability decreased. Neural network simulations were used to generalize the results.  相似文献

This paper presents a numerical strategy based on shallow water equations (SWE) coupled with the 2D Preissmann slot model to handle a ceiling step discontinuity in finite volume schemes for mixed flow modeling. In practice, a typical situation would be a closed structure, such as a bridge or culvert, which induces a sudden vertical flow constriction and may even run partly or totally full in high flow conditions. In such case, both the inlet and outlet of the structure involve a discontinuity in the top elevation. This special singularity is topologically represented by inserting a fictitious cell between 2 adjacent computational cells characterized by sharply different ceiling elevation. The 2D SWE are solved by means of a well‐balanced quasi‐conservative Godunov‐type numerical scheme based on the Slope Limiter Centered (SLIC) scheme. The flow variables at each boundary of the fictitious cell are reconstructed by adopting the cross‐sectional shape of the adjoining cell. Accordingly, the dynamic effect of the structure deck on the flow is suitably modeled, and the C‐property for a stationary solution is rigorously satisfied, even when the closed structure is partially full. The capability of the numerical scheme is verified by comparison with both novel analytical solutions of 1D Riemann problems with a ceiling step discontinuity and experimental data of steady and unsteady mixed flows available in literature. Finally, a real‐scale application to a multiple arch bridge is presented. The results show that the method is robust and effective in predicting the 2D features induced by a crossing structure on the flow dynamics.  相似文献

In this paper, the standard Smagorinsky's algorithm is embedded into the multiple relaxation time (MRT) lattice Boltzmann model (LBM) for large eddy simulation (LES) of turbulent shallow water flows (MRT‐LABSWETM). The model is based on the two‐dimensional nonlinear shallow water equations, giving the depth‐averaged features. It is verified by applying the model in three typical cases in engineering with turbulence: (i) the flow around a square cylinder, (ii) plane cavity flow, and (iii) flows in a junction of 90°. The results obtained by the MRT‐LABSWETM are compared with BGK‐LABSWETM results and experimental data. The objectives of this study are to validate the MRT‐LABSWETM in a turbulence simulation and perform a comparative analysis between the results of BGK‐LABSWETM and MRT‐LABSWETM. We present a spectral/hp element discontinuous Galerkin model for simulating shallow water flows on unstructured triangular meshes. The model uses an orthogonal modal expansion basis of arbitrary order for the spatial discretization and a third‐order Runge–Kutta scheme to advance in time. The local elements are coupled together by numerical fluxes, evaluated using the HLLC Riemann solver. We apply the model to test cases involving smooth flows and demonstrate the exponentially fast convergence with regard to polynomial order. We also illustrate that even for results of ‘engineering accuracy’ the computational efficiency increases with increasing order of the model and time of integration. The model is found to be robust in the presence of shocks where Gibbs oscillations can be suppressed by slope limiting. Copyright 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Generalized Lattice Boltzmann equation (GLBE) was used for computation of turbulent channel flow for which large eddy simulation (LES) was employed as a turbulence model. The subgrid‐scale turbulence effects were simulated through a shear‐improved Smagorinsky model (SISM), which is capable of predicting turbulent near wall region accurately without any wall function. Computations were done for a relatively coarse grid with shear Reynolds number of 180 in a parallelized code. Good numerical stability was observed for this computational framework. The results of mean velocity distribution across the channel showed good correspondence with direct numerical simulation (DNS) data. Negligible discrepancies were observed between the present computations and those reported from DNS for the computed turbulent statistics. Three‐dimensional instantaneous vorticity contours showed complex vortical structures that appeared in such flow geometries. It was concluded that such a framework is capable of predicting accurate results for turbulent channel flow without adding significant complications and the computational cost to the standard Smagorinsky model. As this modeling was entirely local in space it was therefore adapted for parallelization. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Fuel cells and flow batteries are promising technologies to address climate change and air pollution problems. An understanding of the complex multiscale and multiphysics transport phenomena occurring in these electrochemical systems requires powerful numerical tools. Over the past decades, the lattice Boltzmann(LB) method has attracted broad interest in the computational fluid dynamics and the numerical heat transfer communities, primarily due to its kinetic nature making it appropriate for modeling complex multiphase transport phenomena. More importantly, the LB method fits well with parallel computing due to its locality feature, which is required for large-scale engineering applications. In this article, we review the LB method for gas–liquid two-phase flows, coupled fluid flow and mass transport in porous media, and particulate flows. Examples of applications are provided in fuel cells and flow batteries. Further developments of the LB method are also outlined.  相似文献

A numerical method based on the MacCormack finite difference scheme is presented. The method was developed for simulating two‐dimensional overland flow with spatially variable infiltration and microtopography using the hydrodynamic flow equations. The basic MacCormack scheme is enhanced by using the method of fractional steps to simplify application; treating the friction slope, a stiff source term, point‐implicitly, plus, for numerical oscillation control and stability, upwinding the convective acceleration term. A higher‐order smoothing operator is added to aid oscillation control when simulating flow over highly variable surfaces. Infiltration is simulated with the Green–Ampt model coupled to the surface water component in a manner that allows dynamic interaction. The developed method will also be useful for simulating irrigation, tidal flat and wetland circulation, and floods. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This work presents an intrusive reduced-order model (IROM) for uncertainty propagation analyses for flood flows. The 2D shallow water equations are reduced using Galerkin’s projection onto bases obtained from the snapshot-based proper orthogonal decomposition technique. To speed up the computations, the non-polynomial and nonlinear momentum and friction terms are judiciously approximated and the time accuracy issues are addressed using the principal interval decomposition technique. The performance of the IROM is investigated in some test cases. Also, this model is applied to the study of uncertainty propagation for a hypothetical flood in a real river, to derive a probabilistic flood map. The upstream discharge and the Manning roughness coefficient are considered as the uncertain parameters. For relatively small variations around the mean of the inputs, the comparisons of the statistical moments (mean and standard deviation) of the water depth show errors, between the reduced and full models, less than 0.72%. These simulations were completed at up to 50 times faster using the proposed reduced model.  相似文献

The solvability of the problem of the flow formed after a discontinuous wave has passed over a bottom drop is studied within the framework of the first approximation of shallow water theory. Solutions in which the total energy of the flow is either conserved or lost at the drop are considered. Stable self-similar solutions of five qualitatively different types are derived and their domains of existence are determined in the dimensionless parameter plane.  相似文献
