Polarization switching in a quasi-isotropic microchip Nd:YAG laser induced by optical feedback

This paper demonstrates the influence of external optical
feedback on the polarization state of longitudinal modes in
quasi-isotropic microchip Nd:YAG lasers. Under optical feedback, the
polarization state of longitudinal modes in quasi-isotropic lasers
relies strongly on the intracavity anisotropy loss and mode
competition. When the intracavity anisotropy loss is small, external
optical feedback can cause polarization switching and strong mode
competition between two orthogonal linearly polarized eigenstates of
one laser longitudinal mode, which leads to the distortion of laser
intensity modulation waveform. The polarization switching is
independent of the initial external cavity length. By increasing the
intracavity anisotropy loss, one polarization eigenstate can be
suppressed and the laser works in single-polarization state. A
theoretical analysis based on the compound cavity model is
presented, which is in good agreement with the experimental results.
The results offer guidance to the development of laser feedback

Glass containing spherical silver nanoparticles has been irradiated with single, intense, ultrashort laser pulses, with a
wavelength corresponding to the surface plasmon resonance of the particles. After irradiation with linear polarization, dichroism
is observed. Transmission electron microscopy studies reveal that these spectral changes are caused by deformation of the
particles to anisotropic (in the TEM projection approximately ellipsoidal) shapes with an additional halo of small silver
particles around the central one. The deformed particles are uniformly oriented with their longer axes perpendicular to the
laser polarization. Using laser pulses with circular polarization, again a halo is formed around the particles, but the central
particles remain spherical, and no dichroism was observed in the optical spectra.

本文对 5 MHz频差双反射膜双频 He- Ne激光器输出激光的双频特性及偏振特性进行了实验研究。研究结果表明 ,当磁场方向同反射膜的一个本征模方向基本重合时 ,有双频出现 ;当磁场方向同反射膜的一个本征模方向夹角在 45°左右时 ,无双频出现。输出激光的偏振方向由反射膜的本征模确定 ,其偏振非正交程度为 tgρ≤ 0 .0 0 87,椭圆化程度tgβ随激光管与磁场的相对角位置变化而发生变化。在合适的位置 ,tgβ可以小至 2 / 70 0。该种外差光源具有较好的偏振特性。 相似文献

The square-wave response of edge-emitting diode lasers subject to a delayed polarization-rotated optical feedback is studied in detail. Specifically, the polarization state of the feedback is rotated such that the natural laser mode is coupled into the orthogonal, unsupported mode. Square-wave self-modulated polarization intensities oscillating in antiphase are observed experimentally. We find numerically that these oscillations naturally appear for a broad range of values of parameters, provided that the feedback is sufficiently strong and the differential losses in the normally unsupported polarization mode are small. We then investigate the laser equations analytically and find that the square-wave oscillations are the result of a bifurcation phenomenon. 相似文献

研究多重散射效应对舰船尾流气泡群光散射强度和偏振特征的影响是舰船光尾流探测以及新型光自导鱼雷研究的基础. 基于矢量Monte Carlo方法建立了舰船尾流气泡群激光后向探测仿真模型, 重点研究了尾流气泡群的多重散射机理,分析了多重散射效应、尾流气泡群密度对回波信号强度和偏振特征的影响规律. 基于粒子碰撞重要性抽样的基本思想, 在传统能量接收方法的基础上, 提出了回波光子偏振贡献接收方法和回波信号偏振信息统计方法, 解决了小视场系统光子返回概率低无法形成回波能量的难题. 构建了模拟尾流气泡群激光散射强度和偏振探测实验平台, 从实验的角度验证了模拟结果的准确性. 实验和模拟结果的一致性表明, 利用回波强度、偏振信息可表征气泡群距离、密度信息, 从而可对舰船尾流特别是低密度尾流进行高精度的探测和辨识.

后向散射光特性与多普勒信号的质量密切相关。为了设计高性能的激光多普勒测速仪,运用散斑理论详细分析了激光多普勒信号的强度与散射光斑大小的关系,结合泛函理论给出了计算多普勒电流的散斑表达式,并通过实验的方法研究了回波信号的偏振特性及其强度分布。理论分析与实验结果表明,激光多普勒信号的强度与接收器件光敏面的直径成正比,与光斑的直径成反比;选用光斑较小的圆偏振激光束,并用光敏面尺寸较小的探测器在镜面反射方向上接收信号光,可以大大提高多普勒信号的信噪比,增强系统的探测能力,为提高系统的测量精度创造有利的条件。 相似文献

Abstract We studied the erbium-doped fiber laser transient behavior dependence on the pump polarization state or on the cavity polarization eigenvalues. Several series of measurements are shown in which the changes in the transient laser response can be appreciated as the pump polarization state, or the cavity polarization eigenvalues are modified by means of polarization controllers. Results are fitted to a model considering polarization hole burning. It is shown that including this effect is fundamental for a correct erbium-doped fiber laser transient model. On the other hand, the validity of the model's fitting parameters under pump or cavity polarization changes is analyzed. 相似文献

The operational parameters including the polarization controlling and the pump power in a nonlinear polarization rotation-based passively mode-locked fiber laser are studied in this paper.The carrier rate equations of the activated erbium-doped fiber are first employed together with the nonlinear Shro¨dinger equations to reveal the relation between the operational parameters and the output state of the passively mode-locked fiber laser.The numerical and experimental results demonstrate that the output state of the mode-locked laser varies with the polarization controlling and the pump power.The periodicity of the polarization controlling is observed.With given pump power,there exists a set of polarization controlling under which the ultra-short pulse can be generated.With given polarization controlling,the mode-locked state can be maintained generally except for some particular values of pump power.Three shapes of the output optical spectra from the fiber cavity can be identified when the pump power changes.The results in this paper provide a comprehensive insight into the operation of the nonlinear polarization rotation-based passively mode-locked fiber laser. 相似文献

A stable and narrow wavelength spacing multiwavelength erbium-doped fiber laser is proposed and demonstrated. The laser can produce simultaneous dual- and triple-wavelength lasing oscillations with a narrow wavelength spacing of less than 0.1 nm via using a single fiber Bragg gratings written in polarization-maintaining (PM) fiber. By adjusting polarization controller, the wavelength spacing of dual-wavelength lasing oscillations can be tuned to as small as 0.032 nm. The maximum amplitude variation for every lasing wavelength is less than 0.5 dB. The room-temperature operation principle is based on the polarization hole burning and deeply saturated effect in an ordinary erbium-doped fiber ring laser (EDFRL). The laser has the advantages of simple all-fiber configuration, low cost, high stability and operating at room temperature. 相似文献

以掺镱光纤激光器为抽运源、掺铒光纤激光器后接掺铒光纤放大器为信号源,利用周期极化掺镁铌酸锂晶体,研究了全光纤化差频产生中红外激光器的转换效率特性。结果表明,抽运光和信号光偏振态影响差频产生过程的转换效率,利用偏振控制器,可将抽运光和信号光偏振方向调节到与晶体光轴方向平行,以获得高的转换效率。抽运光和信号光的光束质量既影响差频产生过程的转换效率,又决定晶体纵向位置的容限,当聚焦系统由自聚焦透镜和焦距100mm平凸透镜组成时,相对转换效率达0.717mW-2,晶体纵向位置容限为44mm。此外,差频光在3126.36~3529.6nm范围内调谐时,转换效率基本保持不变。 相似文献

为了避免机载光电吊舱中共口径光学系统内部由于道威棱镜旋转引起的激光照射脉冲偏振态的变化,利用琼斯矩阵对道威棱镜的偏振特性与四分之一波片、半波片补偿道威棱镜旋转引起的激光脉冲偏振态变化进行了理论分析和实验验证。结果表明:线偏振的激光脉冲通过旋转一定角度的道威棱镜时,激光脉冲偏振态变为椭圆偏振,偏振态发生变化;而激光脉冲首先通过旋转一定角度的四分之一波片与半波片时,可使通过道威棱镜系统的激光脉冲偏振态保持不变,且两波片旋转角度与道威棱镜旋转角度之间存在一种非线性关系。采用偏振补偿方法可有效避免机载共口径光学系统中道威棱镜引起的激光脉冲偏振态变化,提高激光脉冲能量利用率,降低激光脉冲后向散射抑制难度。 相似文献

We theoretically investigate the synchronization performance of polarization mode of two unidirectionally coupled vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) and propose an encryption scheme, where the phase of the polarization states of the master laser are modulated. It is demonstrated that high synchronization can be achieved between corresponding polarization components of the master laser and the slave laser. Moreover, two distinct synchronization regimes exist, complete synchronization and injection locking. The transmitted digital information is successfully recovered at each polarization branch of the slaver laser. The results open an opportunity for multichannel chaotic communication by utilizing different polarization components in single-mode or multi-transverse-mode VCSELs. 相似文献

Very light or massless spin-zero particles coupled to two photons, such as axions or genuine Goldstone bosons, induce small changes in the polarization state of a laser beam travelling in a magnetic field. Severe bounds on mass and coupling can be obtained through the observation of changes in polarization plane and ellipticity of the beam, at the level of accuracy allowed by present technologies. Tunable polarization over a wide spectral range is a required feature of light sources employed to investigate the properties of local symmetry in matter. In this Letter, we provide the first experimental characterization of the polarization of the harmonic light produced by a free-electron laser and demonstrate a method to obtain free-electron laser harmonics with tunable polarization. Experimental results are successfully compared with theory. Our findings can be expected to have a deep impact on the design and realization of experiments requiring full control of light polarization. 相似文献

研究了在动态光散射纳米颗粒测量中,光源的偏振态对测量结果的影响。采用了粒径为100nm、体积浓度为0.5%的标准颗粒作为样品,使He-Ne激光通过起偏器得到0°~180°方向的偏振光,测量了散射光强、偏振度和粒径测量值的变化,计算了相应的粒径均值偏差和标准差,并将这一结果与无偏振He-Ne激光入射进行了比较。结果表明,当入射光为线偏振光时,偏振方向垂直于散射面时测量效果最好;另一方面,由于颗粒系散射迭加造成的散射光偏振度降低,使线偏振光源与无偏振光源产生的散射光偏振度无明显差别,证明在测量中可以使用无偏振He-Ne激光代替。 相似文献
