The influence of shear thinning on drop deformation is examined through a numerical simulation. A two‐dimensional formulation within the scope of the boundary element method (BEM) is proposed for a drop driven by the ambient flow inside a channel of a general shape, with emphasis on a convergent–divergent channel. The drop is assumed to be shear thinning, obeying the Carreau–Bird model and the suspending fluid is Newtonian. The viscosity of the drop at any time is estimated on the basis of a rate‐of‐strain averaged over the region occupied by the drop. The viscosity thus changes from one time step to the next, and it is strongly influenced by drop deformation. It is found that small drops, flowing on the axis, elongate in the convergent part of the channel, then regain their spherical form in the divergent part; thus confirming experimental observations. Newtonian drops placed off‐axis are found to rotate during the flow with the period related to the initial extension, i.e. to the drop aspect ratio. This rotation is strongly prohibited by shear thinning. The formulation is validated by monitoring the local change of viscosity along the interface between the drop and the suspending fluid. It is found that the viscosity averaged over the drop compares, generally to within a few per cent, with the exact viscosity along the interface.  相似文献

In this paper, a numerical method, which is about the coupling of continuous and discontinuous Galerkin method based on the splitting scheme, is presented for the calculation of viscoelastic flows of the Oldroyd‐B fluid. The momentum equation is discretized in time by using the Adams‐Bashforth second‐order algorithm, and then decoupled via the splitting approach. Considering the Oldroyd‐B constitutive equation, the second‐order Runge‐Kutta approach is selected to complete the temporal discretization. As for the spatial discretizations, the fundamental purpose is to make the best of finite element method (FEM) and discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method to handle different types of equations. Specifically speaking, for the subequations, FEM is chosen to treat the Poisson and Helmholtz equations, and DG is employed to deal with the nonlinear convective term. In addition, because of the hyperbolic nature, DG is also utilized to discretize the Oldroyd‐B constitutive equation spatially. This coupled method avoids resorting to extra stabilization technique occurred in standard FEM framework even for moderately high values of Weissenberg number and also reduces the complexity compared with unified DG scheme. The Oldroyd‐B model is applied to investigate several typical and challenging benchmarks, such as the 4:1 planar contraction flow and the lid‐driven cavity flow, with a wide range of Weissenberg number to illustrate the feasibility, robustness, and validity of our coupled method.  相似文献

The planar contraction flow is a benchmark problem for the numerical investigation of viscoelastic flow. The mathematical model of three‐dimensional viscoelastic fluids flow is established and the numerical simulation of its planar contraction flow is conducted by using the penalty finite element method with a differential Phan‐Thien–Tanner constitutive model. The discrete elastic viscous split stress formulation in cooperating with the inconsistent streamline upwind scheme is employed to improve the computation stability. The distributions of velocity and stress obtained by simulation are compared with that of Quinzani's experimental results detected by laser–doppler velocimetry and flow‐induced birefringence technologies. It shows that the numerical results agree well with the experimental results. The numerical methods proposed in the study can be well used to predict complex flow patterns of viscoelastic fluids. A detailed comparison between the finite element method (FEM) and the lattice‐Boltzmann method (LBM) is presented. As a realistic test case, three‐dimensional fluid flow simulations in an SMRX static mixer were performed. The SMRX static mixer is a piece of equipment with excellent mixing performance and it is used as a highly efficient chemical reactor for viscous systems like polymers. The complex geometry of this mixer makes such three‐dimensional simulations non‐trivial. An excellent agreement between the results of the two simulation methods was found. Furthermore, the numerical results for the pressure drop as a function of the flow rate were close to experimental measurements. Results show that the relatively simple LBM is a good alternative to traditional methods. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The effect of shear thinning on the stability of the Taylor–Couette flow is explored for a Carreau–Bird fluid in the narrow‐gap limit. The Galerkin projection method is used to derive a low‐order dynamical system from the conservation of mass and momentum equations. In comparison with the Newtonian system, the present equations include additional non‐linear coupling in the velocity components through the viscosity. It is found that the critical Taylor number, corresponding to the loss of stability of the circular Couette flow, becomes lower as the shear‐thinning effect increases. That is, shear thinning tends to precipitate the onset of Taylor vortex flow, which coincides with the onset of a supercritical bifurcation. Comparison with existing measurements of the effect of shear thinning on the critical Taylor and wave numbers show good agreement. The Taylor vortex cellular structure loses its stability in turn, as the Taylor number reaches a critical value. At this point, an inverse Hopf bifurcation emerges. In contrast to Newtonian flow, the bifurcation diagrams exhibit a turning point that sharpens with shear‐thinning effect. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A new algorithm, which combines the spectral element method with elastic viscous splitting stress (EVSS) method, has been developed for viscoelastic fluid flows in a planar contraction channel. The system of spectral element approximations to the velocity, pressure, extra stress and the rate of deformation variables is solved by a preconditioned conjugate gradient method based on the Uzawa iteration procedure. The numerical approach is implemented on a planar four‐to‐one contraction channel for a fluid governed by an Oldroyd‐B constitutive equation. The behaviour of the Oldroyd‐B fluids in the contraction channel is investigated with various Weissenberg numbers. It is shown that numerical solutions obtained here agree well with experimental measurements and other numerical predictions. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A finite volume, time‐marching for solving time‐dependent viscoelastic flow in two space dimensions for Oldroyd‐B and Phan Thien–Tanner fluids, is presented. A non‐uniform staggered grid system is used. The conservation and constitutive equations are solved using the finite volume method with an upwind scheme for the viscoelastic stresses and an hybrid scheme for the velocities. To calculate the pressure field, the semi‐implicit method for the pressure linked equation revised method is used. The discretized equations are solved sequentially, using the tridiagonal matrix algorithm solver with under‐relaxation. In both, the full approximation storage multigrid algorithm is used to speed up the convergence rate. Simulations of viscoelastic flows in four‐to‐one abrupt plane contraction are carried out. We will study the behaviour at the entrance corner of the four‐to‐one planar abrupt contraction. Using this solver, we show convergence up to a Weissenberg number We of 20 for the Oldroyd‐B model. No limiting Weissenberg number is observed even though a Phan Thien–Tanner model is used. Several numerical results are presented. Smooth and stable solutions are obtained for high Weissenberg number. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A transient haemodynamic study in a model cavopulmonary vascular system has been carried out for a typical range of parameters using a finite element‐based Navier–Stokes solver. The focus of this study is to investigate the influence of non‐Newtonian behaviour of the blood on the haemodynamic quantities, such as wall shear stress (WSS) and flow pattern. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model is based on an artificial compressibility characteristic‐based split (AC‐CBS) scheme, which has been adopted to solve the Navier–Stokes equations in space–time domain. A power law model has been implemented to characterize the shear thinning nature of the blood depending on the local strain rate. Using the computational model, numerical investigations have been performed for Newtonian and non‐Newtonian flows for different frequencies and input pulse forms. The haemodynamic quantities observed in total cavopulmonary connection (TCPC) for the above conditions suggest that there are considerable differences in average (about 25–40%) and peak (about 50%) WSS distributions, when the non‐Newtonian behaviour of the blood is taken into account. The lower WSS levels observed for non‐Newtonian cases point to the higher risk of lesion formation, especially at higher pulsation frequencies. A realistic pulse form is relatively safer than a sinusoidal pulse as it has more energy distributed in the higher harmonics, which results in higher average WSS values. The present study highlights the importance of including non‐Newtonian shear thinning behaviour for modelling blood flow in the vicinity of repaired arterial connections. A new stabilized finite element method is considered for the time‐dependent Stokes problem, based on the lowest‐order P1?P0 and Q1?P0 elements that do not satisfy the discrete inf–sup condition. The new stabilized method is characterized by the features that it does not require approximation of the pressure derivatives, specification of mesh‐dependent parameters and edge‐based data structures, always leads to symmetric linear systems and hence can be applied to existing codes with a little additional effort. The stability of the method is derived under some regularity assumptions. Error estimates for the approximate velocity and pressure are obtained by applying the technique of the Galerkin finite element method. Some numerical results are also given, which show that the new stabilized method is highly efficient for the time‐dependent Stokes problem. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The interplay between inertia and elasticity is examined for transient free‐surface flow inside a narrow channel. The lubrication theory is extended for the flow of viscoelastic fluids of the Oldroyd‐B type (consisting of a Newtonian solvent and a polymeric solute). While the general formulation accounts for non‐linearities stemming from inertia effects in the momentum conservation equation, and the upper‐convected terms in the constitutive equation, only the front movement contributes to non‐linear coupling for a flow inside a straight channel. In this case, it is possible to implement a spectral representation in the depthwise direction for the velocity and stress. The evolution of the flow field is obtained locally, but the front movement is captured only in the mean sense. The influence of inertia, elasticity and viscosity ratio is examined for pressure‐induced flow. The front appears to progress monotonically with time. However, the velocity and stress exhibit typically a strong overshoot upon inception, accompanied by a plug‐flow behaviour in the channel core. The flow intensity eventually diminishes with time, tending asymptotically to Poiseuille conditions. For highly elastic liquids the front movement becomes oscillatory, experiencing strong deceleration periodically. A multiple‐scale solution is obtained for fluids with no inertia and small elasticity. Comparison with the exact (numerical) solution indicates a wide range of validity for the analytical result. This paper reports on a numerical algorithm for the steady flow of viscoelastic fluid. The conservative and constitutive equations are solved using the finite volume method (FVM) with a hybrid scheme for the velocities and first‐order upwind approximation for the viscoelastic stress. A non‐uniform staggered grid system is used. The iterative SIMPLE algorithm is employed to relax the coupled momentum and continuity equations. The non‐linear algebraic equations over the flow domain are solved iteratively by the symmetrical coupled Gauss–Seidel (SCGS) method. In both, the full approximation storage (FAS) multigrid algorithm is used. An Oldroyd‐B fluid model was selected for the calculation. Results are reported for planar 4:1 abrupt contraction at various Weissenberg numbers. The solutions are found to be stable and smooth. The solutions show that at high Weissenberg number the domain must be long enough. The convergence of the method has been verified with grid refinement. All the calculations have been performed on a PC equipped with a Pentium III processor at 550 MHz. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper presents a two‐dimensional Lagrangian–Eulerian finite element approach of non‐steady state turbulent fluid flows with free surfaces. The proposed model is based on a velocity–pressure finite element Navier–Stokes solver, including an augmented Lagrangian technique and an iterative resolution of Uzawa type. Turbulent effects are taken into account with the k–ε two‐equation statistical model. Mesh updating is carried out through an arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian (ALE) method in order to describe properly the free surface evolution. Three comparisons between experimental and numerical results illustrate the efficiency of the method. The first one is turbulent flow in an academic geometry, the second one is a mould filling in effective casting conditions and the third one is a precise confrontation to a water model. In this paper, we develop least‐squares finite element methods (LSFEMs) for incompressible fluid flows with improved mass conservation. Specifically, we formulate a new locally conservative LSFEM for the velocity–vorticity–pressure Stokes system, which uses a piecewise divergence‐free basis for the velocity and standard C0 elements for the vorticity and the pressure. The new method, which we term dV‐VP improves upon our previous discontinuous stream‐function formulation in several ways. The use of a velocity basis, instead of a stream function, simplifies the imposition and implementation of the velocity boundary condition, and eliminates second‐order terms from the least‐squares functional. Moreover, the size of the resulting discrete problem is reduced because the piecewise solenoidal velocity element is approximately one‐half of the dimension of a stream‐function element of equal accuracy. In two dimensions, the discontinuous stream‐function LSFEM [1] motivates modification of our functional, which further improves the conservation of mass. We briefly discuss the extension of this modification to three dimensions. Computational studies demonstrate that the new formulation achieves optimal convergence rates and yields high conservation of mass. We also propose a simple diagonal preconditioner for the dV‐VP formulation, which significantly reduces the condition number of the LSFEM problem. Published 2012. The present investigation deals with the three‐dimensional flow of an Oldroyd‐B fluid over a stretching surface. The governing equations for the three‐dimensional flow are developed. Similarity transformations are invoked for the conversion of nonlinear partial differential equations into the coupled system of ordinary differential equations. Based upon the updated Lagrangian approach, the principle of virtual work denoted by the updated Kirchhoff stress increment tensors and the updated Green strain increment tensors and the integral constitutive relation expressed by Kirchhoff stress tensors and Green strain tensors are used and the viscoelastic large deformation incremental variational equation is derived. By means of the 8-nodes isoparametric finite element the program of two-dimensional problem is written. Good agreement is found among the results obtained from this paper and other literatures.  相似文献

This paper is an analysis of the peristaltic flow of an Oldroyd‐B fluid in a channel with compliant walls. The flow is induced by the sinusoidal waves on the channel walls. A series solution of the resulting boundary value problem is derived under small amplitude assumption. Emphasis is placed on determining the effects of various interesting flow parameters. Particle suspensions play an important role in many engineering applications, yet their behavior in a number of respects remains poorly understood. In conjunction with careful experiments, modeling and simulation of these systems can provide key insight into their complex behavior. However, these two‐phase systems pose the challenge of simultaneously, accurately, and efficiently capturing the complex geometric structure, kinematics, and dynamics of the particulate discrete phase and the discontinuities it introduces into the variables (e.g., velocity, pressure, density) of the continuous phase. To this end, a new conformal decomposition finite element method (CDFEM) is introduced for solid particles in a viscous fluid. The method is verified in several simple test problems that are representative of aspects of particle suspension behavior. In all cases, we find the CDFEM to perform accurately and efficiently leading to the conclusion that it forms a prime candidate for application to the full direct numerical simulation of particle suspensions.
