This paper describes a central difference scheme for the prediction of flows with an interface. The interface is captured rather than tracked and the key to the current approach is a correction to the hydrostatic pressure. The correction enables the scheme to evaluate pressures at cell faces in a consistent manner so that the source term in the equations is correctly balanced at the interface and on non‐equispaced meshes. This prevents the development of large errors in the solution, which can lead to the divergence of the numerical scheme. The current approach allows interface flows to be calculated by a simple modification of existing central difference codes. Results for a number of test cases are presented, with comparisons made with both experimental data and other numerical solutions. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The paper describes the implementation of moving‐mesh and free‐surface capabilities within a 3‐d finite‐volume Reynolds‐averaged‐Navier–Stokes solver, using surface‐conforming multi‐block structured meshes. The free‐surface kinematic condition can be applied in two ways: enforcing zero net mass flux or solving the kinematic equation by a finite‐difference method. The free surface is best defined by intermediate control points rather than the mesh vertices. Application of the dynamic boundary condition to the piezometric pressure at these points provides a hydrostatic restoring force which helps to eliminate any unnatural free‐surface undulations. The implementation of time‐marching methods on moving grids are described in some detail and it is shown that a second‐order scheme must be applied in both scalar‐transport and free‐surface equations if flows driven by free‐surface height variations are to be computed without significant wave attenuation using a modest number of time steps. Computations of five flows of theoretical and practical interest—forced motion in a pump, linear waves in a tank, quasi‐1d flow over a ramp, solitary wave interaction with a submerged obstacle and 3‐d flow about a surface‐penetrating cylinder—are described to illustrate the capabilities of our code and methods. In previous studies, the moment‐of‐fluid interface reconstruction method showed dramatic accuracy improvements in static and pure advection tests over existing methods, but this did not translate into an equivalent improvement in volume‐tracked multimaterial incompressible flow simulation using low‐order finite elements. In this work, the combined effects of the spatial discretization and interface reconstruction in flow simulation are examined. The mixed finite element pairs, Q1Q0 (with pressure stabilization) and Q2P ? 1 are compared. Material order‐dependent and material order‐independent first and second‐order accurate interface reconstruction methods are used. The Q2P ? 1 elements show significant improvements in computed flow solution accuracy for single material flows but show reduced convergence using element‐average piecewise constant density and viscosity in volume‐tracked simulations. In general, a refined Q1Q0 grid, with better material interface resolution, provided an accuracy similar to the Q2P ? 1 element grid with a comparable number of degrees of freedom. Moment‐of‐fluid shows more benefit from the higher‐order accurate flow simulation than the LVIRA, Youngs', and power diagram interface reconstruction methods, especially on unstructured grids, but does not recover the dramatic accuracy improvements it has shown in advection tests. Numerical methodologies for computer simulations of two‐fluid flows are presented. These methodologies fall into the category of volume tracking methods with piecewise‐linear interface calculation (PLIC). The scope of this work is limited to laminar flows of immiscible, non‐reacting, incompressible Newtonian fluids, without phase change, in planar two‐dimensional geometries. The following novel or enhanced procedures are proposed: a parallelogram scheme for multidimensional advection of the volume‐fraction field; a circle‐fit technique for the orientation of the interface segments and the calculation of curvature; a novel contact angle treatment; and a staggered formulation for volumetric body forces that can accurately balance pressure forces in the vicinity of the interface. In addition, surface‐tension‐derived and hydrostatic‐derived pressure adjustments are introduced as a means of accurately calculating pressure forces in cells that contain the interface, so as to minimize the non‐physical flows that afflict many available volume tracking methods. The proposed method is validated using four test problems that involve simulations of pure advection, a static drop, an oscillating bubble, and a static meniscus. This paper compares the numerical performance of the moment‐of‐fluid (MOF) interface reconstruction technique with Youngs, LVIRA, power diagram (PD), and Swartz interface reconstruction techniques in the context of a volume‐of‐fluid (VOF) based finite element projection method for the numerical simulation of variable‐density incompressible viscous flows. In pure advection tests with multiple materials MOF shows dramatic improvements in accuracy compared with the other methods. In incompressible flows where density differences determine the flow evolution, all the methods perform similarly for two material flows on structured grids. On unstructured grids, the second‐order MOF, LVIRA, and Swartz methods perform similarly and show improvement over the first‐order Youngs' and PD methods. For flow simulations with more than two materials, MOF shows increased accuracy in interface positions on coarse meshes. In most cases, the convergence and accuracy of the computed flow solution was not strongly affected by interface reconstruction method. Published in 2009 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper describes a central‐difference interface‐capturing scheme applied to the prediction of flows with cavitation. Compressible cavitation schemes based on standard central‐difference solvers have been previously described, but the current scheme uses an incompressible formulation only previously implemented with an upwind solver. The central‐difference solver offers significant advantages in computational time compared with upwind schemes. Regions of cavitation are captured rather than tracked. This means that there is no need for complex tracking and reconstruction procedures for the interface of the cavitation region. The use of such schemes on an arbitrarily unstructured mesh is no more complicated than on its structured counterpart. Results for a number of test cases are presented, with comparisons made with both experimental data and other numerical solutions. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Non‐linear turbulence models can be seen as an improvement of the classical eddy‐viscosity concept due to their better capacity to simulate characteristics of important flows. However, application of non‐linear models demand robustness of the numerical method applied, requiring a stable discretization scheme for convergence of all variables involved. Usually, non‐linear terms are handled in an explicit manner leading to possible numerical instabilities. Thus, the present work shows the steps taken to adapt a general non‐linear constitutive equation using a new semi‐implicit numerical treatment for the non‐linear diffusion terms. The objective is to increase the degree of implicitness of the solution algorithm to enhance convergence characteristics. Flow over a backward‐facing step was computed using the control volume method applied to a boundary‐fitted coordinate system. The SIMPLE algorithm was used to relax the algebraic equations. Classical wall function and a low Reynolds number model were employed to describe the flow near the wall. The results showed that for certain combination of relaxation parameters, the semi‐implicit treatment proposed here was the sole successful treatment in order to achieve solution convergence. Also, application of the implicit method described here shows that the stability of the solution either increases (high Reynolds with non‐orthogonal mesh) or preserves the same (low Reynolds number applications). Additional advantages of the procedure proposed here lie in the possibility of testing different non‐linear expressions if one considers the enhanced robustness and stability obtained for the entire numerical algorithm. A hybrid particle‐mesh method was developed for efficient and accurate simulations of two‐phase flows. In this method, the main component of the flow is solved using the constrained interpolated profile/multi‐moment finite volumemethod; the two‐phase interface is rendered using the finite volume particle (FVP) method. The effect of surface tension is evaluated using the continuum surface force model. Numerical particles in the FVP method are distributed only on the surface of the liquid in simulating the interface between liquid and gas; these particles are used to determine the density of each mesh grid. An artificial term was also introduced to mitigate particle clustering in the direction of maximum compression and sparse discretization errors in the stretched direction. This enables accurate interface tracking without diminishing numerical efficiency. Two benchmark simulations are used to demonstrate the validity of the method developed and its numerical stability. The accuracy of drag prediction in unstructured mesh CFD solver of TAS (Tohoku University Aerodynamic Simulation) code is discussed using a drag decomposition method. The drag decomposition method decomposes total drag into wave, profile, induced and spurious drag components, the latter resulting from numerical diffusion and errors. The mesh resolution analysis is conducted by the drag decomposition method. The effect of an advanced unstructured mesh scheme of U‐MUSCL reconstruction is also investigated by the drag decomposition method. The computational results show that the drag decomposition method reliably predicts drag and is capable of meaningful drag decomposition. The accuracy of drag prediction is increased by eliminating the spurious drag component from the total drag. It is also confirmed that the physical drag components are almost independent of the mesh resolution and scheme modification. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

One of the important limitations of the interface tracking algorithms is that they can be used only as long as the local computational grid density allows surface tracking. In a dispersed flow, where the dimensions of the particular fluid parts are comparable or smaller than the grid spacing, several numerical and reconstruction errors become considerable. In this paper the analysis of the interface tracking errors is performed for the volume‐of‐fluid method with the least squares volume of fluid interface reconstruction algorithm. A few simple two‐fluid benchmarks are proposed for the investigation of the interface tracking grid dependence. The expression based on the gradient of the volume fraction variable is introduced for the estimation of the reconstruction correctness and can be used for the activation of an adaptive mesh refinement algorithm. This paper presents a new finite volume scheme to efficiently simulate gravity currents flowing over complex surfaces. The two‐dimensional shallow‐water equations, with terms to account for friction and particle transport, are solved using a non‐oscillatory technique. By applying a form drag at the front or head of the dense current, the scheme also implicitly captures the correct Froude number condition at the moving front as it intrudes into the less dense ambient fluid. The Froude number of the head region predicted by the numerical simulation is in good agreement with experimental results for a homogeneous current over a horizontal surface if a realistic profile drag coefficient is chosen. This new scheme avoids the development complexities of a general front‐tracking scheme (e.g., handling merging fronts and multiple currents) and the computational cost of solving the full three‐dimensional Euler equations while providing a fast, accurate simulation of gravity currents. This paper presents a numerical method for simulating turbulent flows via coupling the Boltzmann BGK equation with Spalart–Allmaras one equation turbulence model. Both the Boltzmann BGK equation and the turbulence model equation are carried out using the finite volume method on unstructured meshes, which is different from previous works on structured grid. The application of the gas‐kinetic scheme is extended to the simulation of turbulent flows with arbitrary geometries. The adaptive mesh refinement technique is also adopted to reduce the computational cost and improve the efficiency of meshes. To organize the unstructured mesh data structure efficiently, a non‐manifold hybrid mesh data structure is extended for polygonal cells. Numerical experiments are performed on incompressible flow over a smooth flat plate and compressible turbulent flows around a NACA 0012 airfoil using unstructured hybrid meshes. These numerical results are found to be in good agreement with experimental data and/or other numerical solutions, demonstrating the applicability of the proposed method to simulate both subsonic and transonic turbulent flows. We present a finite element (FE) formulation of Lighthill's acoustic analogy for the hybrid computation of noise generated by turbulent flows. In the present approach, the flow field is computed using large eddy simulation and scale adaptive simulation turbulence models. The acoustic propagation is obtained by solving the variational formulation of Lighthill's acoustic analogy with the FE method. In order to preserve the acoustic energy, we compute the inhomogeneous part of Lighthill's wave equation by applying the FE formulation on the fine flow grid. The resulting acoustic nodal loads are then conservatively interpolated to the coarser acoustic grid. Subsequently, the radiated acoustic field can be solved in both time and frequency domains. In the latter case, an enhanced perfectly matched layer technique is employed, allowing one to truncate the computational domain in the acoustic near field, without compromising the numerical solution. Our hybrid approach is validated by comparing the numerical results of the acoustic field induced by a corotating vortex pair with the corresponding analytical solution. To demonstrate the applicability of our scheme, we present full 3D numerical results for the computed acoustic field generated by the turbulent flow around square cylinder geometries. The sound pressure levels obtained compare well with measured values. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A new finite element method is developed to simulate time‐dependent viscoelastic shear‐thinning flows characterized by the generalized Oldroyd‐B model. The focus of the algorithm is improved stability through a free‐energy dissipative scheme by using low‐order piecewise‐constant finite element approximations for stress. The algorithm is further modified by incorporating a pressure‐projection method, a DG‐upwinding scheme, a symmetric interior penalty DG method to solve the elliptic pressure‐update equation and a geometric multigrid preconditioner. The improved stability and cost to accuracy is compared when using higher order discontinuous bilinear approximation, where in addition, we consider the influence of a slope limiter for these elements. The algorithm is applied to the 2D start‐up‐driven cavity problem, and the stability of the free energy is illustrated and compared between element choices. An application of the model to modelling blood in small arterioles and channels is considered by simulating pulsatile blood flow through a stenotic arteriole. The individual influences of viscoelasticity and shear‐thinning within the generalized Oldroyd‐B model are investigated by comparing results to the Newtonian, generalized Newtonian and Oldroyd‐B models. Many environmental applications of shallow water flow modelling can be characterized as only slowly varying and everywhere sub‐critical. A simplified finite volume model is therefore developed that is capable of describing pertinent shallow water flow processes more efficiently than the usual Godunov/ Riemann characteristics approaches. The model is tested against a number of analytical and numerical solutions to the governing equations. The model reproduces accurately flow round a circular bend, flow over topography, flow up an initially dry beach and floodwave propagation down a meandering river reach, with mass conservative solutions. Erosion and sediments transport processes have a great impact on industrial structures and on water quality. Despite its limitations, the Saint‐Venant‐Exner system is still (and for sure for some years) widely used in industrial codes to model the bedload sediment transport. In practice, its numerical resolution is mostly handled by a splitting technique that allows a weak coupling between hydraulic and morphodynamic distinct softwares but may suffer from important stability issues. In recent works, many authors proposed alternative methods based on a strong coupling that cure this problem but are not so trivial to implement in an industrial context. In this work, we then pursue 2 objectives. First, we propose a very simple scheme based on an approximate Riemann solver, respecting the strong coupling framework, and we demonstrate its stability and accuracy through a number of numerical test cases. However, second, we reinterpret our scheme as a splitting technique and we extend the purpose to propose what should be the minimal coupling that ensures the stability of the global numerical process in industrial codes, at least, when dealing with collocated finite volume method. The resulting splitting method is, up to our knowledge, the only one for which stability properties are fully demonstrated.  相似文献

Two‐dimensional turbulent flow over a surface‐mounted obstacle is studied as a numerical experiment that takes place in a wind tunnel. The transient Navier–Stokes equations are solved directly with Galerkin finite elements. The Reynolds number defined with respect to the height of the wind tunnel is 12 518. Instantaneous streamline patterns are shown that give a complete picture of the flow phenomena. Energy and enstrophy spectra yield the dual cascade of two‐dimensional turbulence and the ?1 power law decay of enstrophy. Mean values of velocities and root mean square fluctuations are compared with the available experimental results. Other statistical characteristics of turbulence such as Eulerian autocorrelation coefficients, longitudinal and lateral coefficients are also computed. Finally, oscillation diagrams of computed velocity fluctuations yield the chaotic behaviour of turbulence. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes that are able to describe in detail the dynamic evolution of the deformable interface in gas–liquid or liquid–liquid flows may be a valuable tool to explore the potential of multi‐fluid flow in narrow channels for process intensification. In the present paper, a computational exercise for co‐current bubble‐train flow in a square vertical mini‐channel is performed to investigate the performance of well‐known CFD codes for this type of flows. The computations are based on the volume‐of‐fluid method (VOF) where the transport equation for the liquid volumetric fraction is solved either by the methods involving a geometrical reconstruction of the interface or by the methods that use higher‐order difference schemes instead. The codes contributing to the present code‐to‐code comparison are an in‐house code and the commercial CFD packages CFX, FLUENT and STAR‐CD. Results are presented for two basic cases. In the first one, the flow is driven by buoyancy only, while in the second case the flow is additionally forced by an external pressure gradient. The results of the code‐to‐code comparison show that only the VOF method with interface reconstruction leads to physically sound and consistent results, whereas the use of difference schemes for the volume fraction equation shows some deficiencies.
