The specific heat and heat of decomposition of a glass-filled phenolformaldehyde (phenolic) resin have been determined from experimental data obtained using a simultaneous thermal analyzer capable of operation to 1500 C. The measurements were conducted on powdered samples of the polymer to temperatures of approximately 1050 C at a rate of 20 deg min–1 in an argon atmosphere. Both the mass loss and energetics were measured for the virgin component of the material, while only the energetics were measured for the char component. The combination of these data was used to calculate the specific heat of the virgin, char, and decomposing material, as well as the heat of decomposition. Also, in order to establish the accuracy of the instrument, the specific heat of pyroceram 9606 was measured and compared to previously published values.
Zusammenfassung Die spezifische Wärme und die Zersetzungswärme eines glasgefüllten Phenol-Formaldehyd-Harzes wurden aus experimentellen Daten bestimmt, die mittels eines simultanen ThermoanalyseGerätes für Arbeiten bis 1500 C gewonnen wurden. Die Messungen wurden an gepulverten Polymerproben bis zu Temperaturen von 1050 C mit einer Aufheizgeschwindigkeit von 20 K min–1 in Argonatmosphäre durchgeführt. Massenverlust und Energieänderungen wurden für das jungfräuliche Material gemessen, die Energieänderung auch für das verkohlte Material. Zur Prüfung der Messgenauigkeit des Geräts wurde die spezifische Wärmekapazität von Pyroceram 9606 gemessen und mit früher publizierten Daten verglichen.

In agreement with the results reported by Lipsky, emission from cyclohexane depends on the temperature T and on the nature of the phase (liquid or solid). Determination of the lifetimes of the fluorescent state with a single photon counting apparatus gives similar results. Our experimental work shows that the rate constant of fluorescence for the solid phase I (face-centered cubic cell) practically does not depend on temperature. Variations of lifetime vs. T cannot easily be interpreted only with the classical theory of non-radiative transitions.

The kinetics of Ln2O3 hydration (Ln=Sm, Ho, Yb, Lu) have been studied at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, as have the influence of the activation temperature and the method of preparation of the oxides.The best correlation coefficients are obtained for a diffusion mechanism. If a structural relationship between the C-Ln2O3 and their precursors is considered, the possibility arises of the existence of defect planes in the oxides prepared from the hydroxide and carbonate. This facilitates the hydration process through a diffusion mechanism in the case of the rare earth sesquioxides prepared from the above precursors.
Zusammenfassung Die Kinetik der Hydratisierung von Ln2O3 (Ln=Sm, Ho, Yb, Lu) wurde bei Raumtemperatur und atmosphärischem Druck bezüglich des Einflusses der Aktivierungstemperatur und der Art der Darstellung der Oxide untersucht. Die besten Korrelationskoeffizienten werden für einen Diffusionsmechanismus erhalten. Wenn die strukturelle Beziehung zwischen den C-Ln2O3 in Betracht gezogen wird, so ergibt sich die Möglichkeit der Existenz von defekten Gitterebenen in den aus Hydroxiden und Carbonaten hergestellten Oxiden. Dies erleichtert den Hydratisierungsprozeß durch einen Diffusionsmechanismus im Falle von aus den oben genannten Vorstufen hergestellten Sesquioxiden der Seltenen Erdmetalle.

The thermogravimetric decomposition of anilinum octamolybdate has been studied under non-isothermal conditions to elucidate the chemical reactions taking place in the first step of decomposition of the anhydrous compound.The decomposition products were analyzed by gas-liquid chromatography, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS), infrared spectroscopy and X-ray powder diffraction.The main decomposition product of aniline turned out to be indole, which is different from the major product in the isothermal decomposition at the same temperature, i.e. N-ethyl-aniline.A dehydrocyclization reaction is suggested as the rate-dependent process. This is probably due to the catalytic effect of the octamolybdate anion.
Zusammenfassung Die thermische Zersetzung von Anilinoctamolybdat wurde unter nicht-isothermen Bedingungen thermogravimetrisch untersucht, um die im ersten Zersetzungsschritt der wasserfreien Verbindung verlaufenden chemischen Reaktionen aufzuklären. Die Zersetzungsprodukte wurden mittels Gas-Flüssigkeits-Chromatographie, Gaschromatographie-Massenspektrometrie (GC/MS), Infrarotspektroskopie und Röntgendiffraktometrie analysiert. Als Hauptprodukt der Zersetzung von Anilin wurde Indol gefunden, während bei isothermer Zersetzung bei gleicher Temperatur vorwiegend N-Äthylanilin entsteht. Es wird angenommen, daß beim nicht-isothermen Prozeß eine wahrscheinlich durch das Octamolybdat katalysierte Dehydrocyclisierungsreaktion verläuft.

The paper describes oscillatory phenomena observed during ammonia oxidation on a PtRh catalyst in a single pellet reactor. The phenomena consist in periodical changes of the catalyst temperature and a periodical initiation of the reaction in the gas phase. They are interpreted via coupling of the catalytic dissociation and homogeneous oxidation of ammonia.

Nitrofurazone, 5-nitro-2-furaldehydesemicarbazone, pharmaceutical compound, has been synthesized and its thermal behaviour studied by DTA, DSC and TG. The resulting thermoanalytical curves, showing that the maximum change in mass occurred at 516.5 K, with a 67% weight loss, are in good correlation with the enthalpy of the decomposition reaction, 326.93 kJ mol–1. On the basis of the results, it is possible to establish the mechanism of the thermal decomposition and to acquire information on the stability of the analyzed organic compound, 5-nitro-2-furaldehydesemicarbazone.
Zusammenfassung Das Arzneimittel Nitrofurazon (5-Nitro-2-furaldehyd-Semicarbazon) wurde synthetisiert und dessen thermisches Verhalten mittels DTA, DSC und TG untersucht. Die erhaltenen thermoanalytischen Kurven, die einen Gewichtsverlust von 67 Gew.-% mit maximaler Geschwindigkeit der Gewichtsabnahme bei 516,5 K zeigen, sind in guter Übereinstimmung mit der Enthalpie der Zersetzungsreaktion von 326,93 kJ·mol–1. Aus den Versuchsergebnissen können der Mechanismus der thermischen Zersetzung abgeleitet und Informationen über die Stabilität von 5-Nitro-2-furaldehyd-Semicarbazon erhalten werden.

The kinetics of 1,4-cis polymerization of butadiene on a catalyst formed by reacting bis(-allyl) nickel with silica have been studied. The rate of polymerization is first order with respect to the monomer concentration. The apparent activation energy is 9.5±0.5 kcal/mol. The possible structure of the active center and the scheme of polymer chain growth have been discussed.

Résumé Les équilibres solide liquide vapeur du système binaire CoCl2-H2O sont étudiés dans le domaine de température 120–720. La pression de la solution saturée est mesurée entre 1 et 60 atm. et le diagramme de phases est établi.Deux composés intermédiaires: CoCl2 · 2H2O et CoCl2 · H2O sont observés; ils subissent une décomposition péritectique à 206 et 335.Un tri et un tétrahydrate n'ont pas été obtenus malgré une étude systématique faisant intervenir des mesures d'analyse thermique, de thermogravimétrie et d'ébulliométrie.L'enthalpie et l'entropie de fusion du chlorure de cobalt sont évaluées à partir de la pente de la courbe de liquidus.Les valeurs calculées de l'enthalpie de déshydration de CoCl2 · 2H2O et CoCl2 · H2O entre 1 et 60 bars sont respectivement de 17 et 16 Kcal. mole–1.

Zusammenfassung Die Gleichgewichte Festkörper Flüssigkeit Dampf des binären Systems CoCl2-H2O wurden im Temperaturbereich von 120 bis 720C untersucht. Der Druck der gesättigten Lösung wurde zwischen 1 und 60 Atm. gemessen und das Phasendiagramm aufgenommen.Zwei Intermediärverbindungen: CoCl2 · 2H2O und CoCl2 · H2O wurden beobachtet; diese zersetzen sich bei 206 und 335 peritektisch.Ein Tri- und ein Tetrahydrat wurden trotz systematischer Untersuchungen mittels thermoanalytischer, thermogravimetrischer und ebulliometrischer Messung nicht gefunden.Die Enthalpie und Entropie der Kobaltchloridschmelze wurden aus der Steigung der Liquiduskurve ermittelt.Die errechneten Werte der Dehydratierungsenthalpie betrugen für CoCl2 · 2H 2 O und CoCl2 · H2O zwischen 1 und 60 bar 17 bzw. 16 Kcal2 mol–1.

Ligand exchange between the compounds Co(AA)2Py2 and Co(AA)Clpyx (x=1 or 3) formed in the, system, CO(AA)2–SnR2Cl2(R=Ph, Et) in chloroform with pyridine has been established to be catalyzed by SnR2Cl2. An interpretation of the catalytic action of SnR2Cl2 is suggested.

The charge on atoms and the bond strengths in CH3CHOHCH3, CH3 CH3, CH3CHOHCH 2 , CH3 CH 2 and CH3 CH3...O(H)CH(CH3)2 have been calculated by the CNDO/2 method. The results are in agreement with published experimental observations on catalytic dehydration. A modified mechanism of anti-elimination on solid catalysts is proposed.

Regularities in n-hexane conversion on decationized Y zeolites under cracking and aromatization conditions have been studied. Possible formation of lower olefins and benzenes in parallel reactions following different mechanisms at low conversion degrees is suggested. The effect of thermosteam treatment on the activity and selectivity of Y zeolites in n-hexane conversion has been examined.

The dehydrocyclization of n-heptane at 520–550°C over pure chromia and chromia with added CaO and K2O (5 wt.% each) has been investigated. Introduction of an alkaline additive into Cr2O3 decreases markedly the yield of toluene. Raising of the reduction temperature of alkali-containing samples from 550 to 700°C results, in contrast to pure Cr2O3 and chromia-alumina systems, not in diminished, but in increased yields of toluene, the activity enhancement being particularly pronounced for the CaO-containing catalyst. These increased activities cannot be correlated either with variations in specific surface area or changes in the content of Cr6+ during subsequent oxidation, and presumably should be ascribed to more extensive catalyst reduction at higher temperatures.

XRD, isothermal and temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) experiments were carried out with SiO2, SiO2–Al2O3 and -Al2O3 supported catalysts. Molybdena is in a more disperse state on supports containing more alumina and it is more reducible on SiO2–Al2O3 than on SiO2 or -Al2O3. TPR curves were shown to reflect connections between reduction kinetics and dispersity.

The reduction of Pt/SiO2 at 1100 K results in a decrease of the quantity of absorbed hydrogen and of the catalytic activity in benzene hydrogenation, ethane hydrogenolysis and neopentane isomerization, which cannot be accounted for by metal sintering. O2 treatment followed by reduction at moderate temperature restores the usual properties of the catalyst. This behavior is similar to that observed on Pt/TiO2 catalysts, the difference lying in the temperature at which the phenomenon appears.
