Magnetic field-induced spatially periodic deformations of planar nematic layers twisted by an angle Φ were investigated numerically. Chiral nematics with pitches compatible with the twist angle and non-chiral nematics twisted by Φ ≤π/2 were considered. Two different modes of deformation, taking the form of stripes, were found: the so called Mode X, with periodicity parallel to the mid-plane director in the undisturbed structure, and Mode Y with periodicity perpendicular to the mid-plane director. The static director distributions were calculated for various magnetic field strengths, twist angles and elastic parameters. The influence of surface tilt was also investigated. Mode X appeared for sufficiently large Φ and was possible in nematics with typical elastic properties. Mode Y appeared provided that the k22/k11 elastic constant ratio and the twist angle Φ were sufficiently small. Both modes arose from the undistorted state when the magnetic field exceeded a threshold value. The spatial period of the patterns increased with field strength. At high field, regions with almost homogeneous deformation arose in the two halves of each stripe. Their width and, simultaneously, the spatial period diverged to infinity at some critical field. This divergence corresponds to the transition to a homogeneously deformed state. Diagrams were constructed showing the ranges of parameters favouring the periodic distortions.  相似文献

The behaviour of the mesophase directors when a sample with a negative anisotropy Deltachi in the magnetic susceptibility is rotated at a speed omega in a magnetic field B0 about an axis inclined at an angle beta is investigated by deuterium NMR spectroscopy. There are combinations of beta and omega which lead to the directors aligning along the spinning axis (stable region), and other combinations where the directors are either unaffected by the rotation, or have a timedependent distribution (unstable region). These two regions are separated by a line (the q line) whose position depends on beta and omegac DeltachiB02/2mu0gamma1, where gamma1 is a twist viscosity coefficient. Experiments on 4-n-propyl-4-cyanobicyclohexane (CCH3) are used to demonstrate how the q line, and hence omegac may be determined. Combining this result with a measurement of the anisotropy in the magnetic susceptibility, Deltachi, yields a value for gamma1.  相似文献

We have determined the probability distribution function for the director in a spinning nematic mesophase subject to a static magnetic field using electrons resonance spectroscopy. For low spinning speeds the director is found to be inclined to the magnetic field as predicted by a continum theory analysis of the system; there is however a small spread in the angle made by the director with the field. This is inhomogeneity in the director alignment increases smoothly as the angular velocity of the mesophase is increased until at high speeds the director adopts an isotropic distribution mesophase which account for the dispersion in the director produced by sample rotation.  相似文献

The growth of the distortion of the director in an external field, and its relaxation on removal of the field are studied for nematic solutions of the rod-like poly(1,4-phenylene-2,6-benzobisthiazole), PBZT, over a range of concentration, polymer molecular weight and temperature. The twist viscosity and the order parameter are more weakly dependent on concentration than predicted for charged rod-like chains. This behaviour implies a short-range translational order in a direction orthogonal to the chain axis, induced by electrostatic interactions among the polycations on protonated PBZT. The relaxation gives a normal temperature dependence for the splay curvature elasticity, but that for the twist curvature is unexpectedly strong. This behaviour is interpreted as a weakening of the surface anchoring with increased temperature.  相似文献

The relationships between the rotational rate of electrochemical cell, its ohmic resistance, a ratio between the radii of inner and outer cylindrical electrodes, a sum of cathodic and anodic potentials, and the mechanical energy, which is consumed for passing a prescribed current and overcoming friction forces, are analyzed. Suspensions of rod-like cellulose crystallites of axial ratio ≈ 20-40, prepared by acid hydrolysis of natural cellulose fibres with sulphuric acid, give stable ordered fluids that display well-formed textures and disclinations characteristic of chiral nematic liquid crystalline phases. The critical volume fraction for phase separation of salt-free suspensions is typically 0.03, with a relatively narrow biphasic region. Because of the negative diamagnetic susceptibility of cellulose, the ordered phase becomes oriented in a magnetic field with its chiral nematic axis parallel to the applied field.  相似文献

A mechanism is presented explaining a reported heavy-atom-induced magnetic field effect as a consequence of non-equilibrium triplet sublevel population in an intermediate exciplex. The triplet exciplex spin polarization is induced by sub-level-selective intersystem crossing from the exciplex triplet to its singlet ground state and is decreased by an external magnetic field. The theory accounts almost quantitatively for the observed influence of magnetic field strength and heavy-atom substituents.  相似文献

We have investigated aggregation phenomena in a polydisperse colloidal dispersion of ferromagnetic particles simulated by employing the cluster-moving Monte Carlo method in an applied magnetic field. The influence of both particle-particle and particle-field interactions on the aggregate structures is analyzed in terms of a pair correlation function. The results obtained in this study are summarized as follows: Under a strong magnetic field, chainlike clusters are formed along the magnetic field direction, and they become thickly clustered with an increase in the strength of the external magnetic field. Moreover, the thickly clustered chains are formed for a polydisperse system that has a large standard deviation of particle diameters. In contrast, for a very weak magnetic field, the strong interaction between the larger particles gives rise to the formation of various shapes in the chainlike clusters, including bending, looping, and branching. With an increase in the external magnetic field, these structures reorganize to form straight chainlike clusters. Furthermore, the thickness of the chainlike clusters for the polydisperse system is found to depend on the standard deviation of the particle-size distribution but is found to be independent of the magnetic field strength.  相似文献

The influence of an intense external field on the dynamics of the nematic liquid crystal phase is investigated using a molecular dynamics simulation for the Gay-Berne nematogen under isobaric-isothermal conditions. The molecular dynamics as a function of the second-rank orientational order parameter P<2> for a system consisting of a nematic liquid crystal in the presence of an intense magnetic field is compared with that of a similar system without the field. The translational motion of molecules is determined as a function of the translational diffusion coefficient tensor and the anisotropy and compared with the values predicted theoretically. The rotational dynamics of molecules is analyzed using the first- and the second-rank orientational time correlation functions. The translational diffusion coefficient parallel with respect to the director is constrained by the intense field, although the perpendicular one is decreased as the P<2> is increased, just as it is in the system without the field. However, no essential effect of the strong magnetic field is observed in the rotational molecular dynamics. Further, the rotational diffusion coefficient parallel with respect to the director obtained from the first-rank orientational time correlation function in the simulation is qualitatively in agreement with that in the real nematic liquid crystalline molecules. The P<2> dependence of the rotational diffusion coefficient for the system with the intense magnetic field shows a tendency similar to that for the system without the field.  相似文献

Raman spectroscopy is employed to investigate helical twist formation in nematic and smectic C phases of p-n-octoxybenzoic acid (OBA) doped with a small amount of Cholesteric Nonanoate (CN). A cholesteric→ nematic phase transition in OBA/CN is induced by an external magnetic field in the temperature range 135–148°C. The threshold field (Hc) is equal to 8.0 kGauss for 0.33 % by weight CN/OBA, and no hysteresis is observed.  相似文献

We have studied the phase retardation of linearly polarized light in a hybrid nematic liquid crystal cell. For a certain range of directions of the applied magnetic field the phase retardation is found to change non-monotonically with the magnetic induction. The observed behaviour is described rather well by the standard Frank elastic theory. The corrections resulting from subsurface deformations, which are characteristic both for second order elasticity approach and for surface field theory, are also considered. The analysis of the experimental data suggests that the presence of distortions in the zero-field director configuration is the necessary condition for the non-monotonic phase retardation, which implies that such an experiment could be used for the detection of misalignment of the effective pretilts in a nematic cell.  相似文献

The behaviour of a chiral nematic mixture with low frequency dielectric relaxtion was studied between two electrodes, with homeotropic anchoring, in the presence of an AC electric field E. The phase diagram in the parameter plane (d/p, E) was determined for this mixture which could be dielectrically negative or positive in different frequency ranges. The determination was carried out by changing the sample thickness d and both the amplitude and frequency of the electric field at a constant cholesteric pitch p.  相似文献

The elastic theory of nemtatic liquid crystals is used to determine whether it gives support for recent experimental observations of a novel periodic phase occurring in homeotropically aligned films when an electric field is applied in the plane of the film. The director remains in the plane defined by the film normal and the field, and the wavevector of the periodicity is parallel to the field.
