This paper presents a variational method for estimating the effective constitutive response of composite materials with nonlinear constitutive behavior. The method is based on a stationary variational principle for the macroscopic potential in terms of the corresponding potential of a linear comparison composite (LCC) whose properties are the trial fields in the variational principle. When used in combination with estimates for the LCC that are exact to second order in the heterogeneity contrast, the resulting estimates for the nonlinear composite are also guaranteed to be exact to second-order in the contrast. In addition, the new method allows full optimization with respect to the properties of the LCC, leading to estimates that are fully stationary and exhibit no duality gaps. As a result, the effective response and field statistics of the nonlinear composite can be estimated directly from the appropriately optimized linear comparison composite. By way of illustration, the method is applied to a porous, isotropic, power-law material, and the results are found to compare favorably with earlier bounds and estimates. However, the basic ideas of the method are expected to work for broad classes of composites materials, whose effective response can be given appropriate variational representations, including more general elasto-plastic and soft hyperelastic composites and polycrystals.  相似文献

The mechanical response of metal–ceramic composites is analysed through a homogenization model accounting for the mechanical behaviour of the constituent materials. In order to achieve this purpose a nonlinear homogenization method based on the phase field approach has been suitably implemented into a numerical code. A prescribed homogenized strain state is applied to a unit volume element of a metal–ceramic composite with proportional loading in which all components of the strain tensor are proportional to one scalar parameter. The mechanical response of the material has been modeled by considering a von Mises plasticity model for the metal phase and a Drucker–Prager associative elastic–plastic material model for the ceramic phase. A two stages plasticity has been obtained in which inelastic strain develops in the metal phase followed by a fully plastic response. A comparison with a finite element model of the stress–strain response of an axisymmetric unit cell has been carried out with the purpose to validate the homogenization based modeling presented in the paper. Plastic parameters of a Drucker–Prager yield surface for the homogenized composite have been calculated at different materials compositions. Associative Drucker–Prager plasticity has been found to be accurate for high ceramic content.  相似文献

A homogenization procedure to estimate the macroscopic strength of nonlinear matrix-inclusion composites with different strength characteristics of the matrix and inclusions, respectively, is presented in this paper. The strength up-scaling is formulated within the framework of the yield design theory and the linear comparison composite (LCC) approach, introduced by Ponte Castaneda (2002) and extended to frictional models by Ortega et al. (2011), which estimates the macroscopic strength of composite materials in terms of an optimally chosen linear thermo–elastic comparison composite with a similar underlying microstructure. In the paper various combinations for the underlying material behavior for the individual phases of the composite are considered: The matrix phase can be a quasi frictional material characterized either by a Drucker–Prager-type (hyperbolic) or an elliptical strength criterion, which predicts a strength limit also in hydrostatic compression, while the inclusion phase either may represent empty pores, pore voids filled with a pore fluid, rigid inclusions, or solid inclusions, whose strength characteristics also maybe described by a Drucker–Prager-type or an elliptical strength criterion. For generating the homogenized strength criterion efficiently in such general cases of matrix-inclusion composites, a novel algorithm is proposed in the paper. The validation of the proposed strength homogenization procedure for selected combinations of strength characteristics of the matrix material and the inclusions is conducted by comparisons with experimental results and alternative existing strength homogenization models.  相似文献

Forming limit stresses of sheet metals subjected to linear and combined stress paths are analyzed using the M-K model in conjunction with two anisotropic work-hardening models: a work-hardening model which is capable of describing Bauschinger and cross-hardening effects, and a work-hardening model which cannot predict the cross-hardening effect. It is found that the forming limit stress is path-independent when the stress–strain curves for the linear and combined stress paths agree well with each other. On the other hand, the forming limit stress for the combined stress path depends on the strain path when the prestrain changes the subsequent stress–strain relation. We conclude that the stress-based forming limit criterion is efficient only for a material with a work-hardening behavior that is not affected by strain path change. The influence of the work-hardening behavior on the forming limit stress is discussed in detail.  相似文献

We propose a general formulation – which we believe to be new – for the mean-field homogenization of inclusion-reinforced elasto-viscoplastic composites assuming small strains. Our proposal is based on an interplay between constitutive equations and numerical algorithms, and the key ideas behind it are the following. The evolution equations for inelastic strain and internal variables at the beginning of each time interval are linearized around the ending time of the same interval. The linearized equations are then numerically integrated using a fully implicit backward Euler scheme. The obtained algebraic equations lead to an incrementally affine stress–strain relation which involves two important terms. The first one is the algorithmic tangent operator, obtained by consistent linearization of the time discretized constitutive equations. The second term is a new one and called an affine strain increment. The proposal leads to thermoelastic-like relations directly in the time domain, and not in the Laplace–Carson (L–C) one. There is no need for viscoelastic-type integral rewriting of the evolution equations, for L–C transforms, or for numerical inversion back from L–C to time domains. The proposed method can be readily applied to sophisticated elasto-viscoplastic models with an arbitrary set of scalar or tensor internal variables, and is valid for multi-axial, non-monotonic and non-proportional loading histories. The theory is applied in detail to a well-known constitutive model, and verified against finite element simulations of representative volume elements or unit cells, for a number of composite materials.  相似文献

In this paper, a generalized anisotropic hardening rule based on the Mroz multi-yield-surface model for pressure insensitive and sensitive materials is derived. The evolution equation for the active yield surface with reference to the memory yield surface is obtained by considering the continuous expansion of the active yield surface during the unloading/reloading process. The incremental constitutive relation based on the associated flow rule is then derived for a general yield function for pressure insensitive and sensitive materials. Detailed incremental constitutive relations for materials based on the Mises yield function, the Hill quadratic anisotropic yield function and the Drucker–Prager yield function are derived as the special cases. The closed-form solutions for one-dimensional stress–plastic strain curves are also derived and plotted for materials under cyclic loading conditions based on the three yield functions. In addition, the closed-form solutions for one-dimensional stress–plastic strain curves for materials based on the isotropic Cazacu–Barlat yield function under cyclic loading conditions are summarized and presented. For materials based on the Mises and the Hill anisotropic yield functions, the stress–plastic strain curves show closed hysteresis loops under uniaxial cyclic loading conditions and the Masing hypothesis is applicable. For materials based on the Drucker–Prager and Cazacu–Barlat yield functions, the stress–plastic strain curves do not close and show the ratcheting effect under uniaxial cyclic loading conditions. The ratcheting effect is due to different strain ranges for a given stress range for the unloading and reloading processes. With these closed-form solutions, the important effects of the yield surface geometry on the cyclic plastic behavior due to the pressure-sensitive yielding or the unsymmetric behavior in tension and compression can be shown unambiguously. The closed form solutions for the Drucker–Prager and Cazacu–Barlat yield functions with the associated flow rule also suggest that a more general anisotropic hardening theory needs to be developed to address the ratcheting effects for a given stress range.  相似文献

A systematic methodology for an accurate evaluation of various existing linearization procedures sustaining mean fields theories for nonlinear composites is proposed and applied to recent homogenization methods. It relies on the analysis of a periodic composite for which an exact resolution of both the original nonlinear homogenization problem and the linear homogenization problems associated with the chosen linear comparison composite (LCC) with an identical microstructure is possible. The effects of the sole linearization scheme can then be evaluated without ambiguity. This methodology is applied to three different two-phase materials in which the constitutive behavior of at least one constituent is nonlinear elastic (or viscoplastic): a reinforced composite, a material in which both phases are nonlinear and a porous material. Comparisons performed on these three materials between the considered homogenization schemes and the reference solution bear out the relevance and the performances of the modified second-order procedure introduced by Ponte Castañeda in terms of prediction of the effective responses. However, under the assumption that the field statistics (first and second moments) are given by the local fields in the LCC, all the recent nonlinear homogenization procedures still fail to provide an accurate enough estimate of the strain statistics, especially for composites with high contrast.  相似文献

Detailed finite element implementation is presented for a recently developed technique (He et al., 2012) to characterize nonlinear shear stress–strain response and interlaminar shear strength based on short-beam shear test of unidirectional polymeric composites. The material characterization couples iterative three-dimensional finite element modeling for stress calculation with digital image correlation for strain evaluation. Extensive numerical experiments were conducted to examine the dependence of the measured shear behavior on specimen and test configurations. The numerical results demonstrate that consistent results can be achieved for specimens with various span-to-thickness ratios, supporting the accurate material properties for the carbon/epoxy composite under study.  相似文献

Experiments have shown that magnesium alloy sheet a common hexagonal close-packed metal, exhibits mechanical behavior unlike that of sheets made of cubic metals (X.Y. Lou et al., 2007, Int. J. Plasticity, 24, 44). The unique stress–strain response includes a strong asymmetry in the initial yield and subsequent plastic hardening. In other words, the stress–strain curves in tension and compression are significantly different. A proper representation of the constitutive relationships is crucial for the accurate evaluation of springback, which occurs due to the residual moment distribution through the sheet thickness after bending. In this paper, we propose an analytical model for asymmetric elasto-plastic bending under tension followed by elastic unloading in order to evaluate the bending moment, which is equivalent to the springback amount. To simplify the calculations, the experimentally measured stress–strain curve of the magnesium alloy sheet was approximated with discrete linear hardening in each deformation region, and the material properties were characterized according to several simplifying assumptions. The bending moment was calculated analytically using the approximate asymmetric stress–strain relationship up to the prescribed curvature corresponding to the radius of the tool in sheet metal forming operations. A numerical example showed an unusual springback increase, even with an increase in the applied force; this is an unexpected result for conventional symmetric materials. We also compared the calculated springback amounts with the results of physical measurements. This showed that the proposed model predicts the main trends of the springback in magnesium alloy sheets reasonably well considering the simplicity of the analytical approach.  相似文献

We study the coupled thermo-mechanical problem that is obtained by combining generalized standard materials with Fourier’s law for heat conduction. The analysis is conducted in the framework of non-smooth mechanics in order to account for possible constraints on the state variables. This allows models of damage and phase-transformation to be included in the analysis. In view of performing numerical simulations, an incremental thermo-mechanical problem and corresponding variational principles are introduced. Conditions for existence of solutions to the incremental problem are discussed and compared with the isothermal case. The numerical implementation of the proposed approach is studied in detail. In particular, it is shown that the incremental thermo-mechanical problem can be recast as a concave maximization problem and ultimately amounts to solve a sequence of linear thermal problems and purely mechanical (i.e. at a prescribed temperature field) problems. Therefore, using the proposed approach, thermo-mechanical coupling can be implemented with low additional complexity compared to the isothermal case, while still relying on a sound mathematical framework. As an application, thermo-mechanical coupling in shape memory alloys is studied. The influence of the loading strain-rate on the phase transformation and on the overall stress–strain response is investigated, as well as the influence of the thermal boundary conditions. The numerical results obtained by the proposed approach are compared with numerical and experimental results from the literature.  相似文献

A micromechanical framework is proposed to predict the effective elastic behavior and weakened interface evolution of particulate composites. The Eshelby’s tensor for an ellipsoidal inclusion with slightly weakened interface [Qu, J., 1993a. Eshelby tensor for an elastic inclusion with slightly weakened interfaces. Journal of Applied Mechanics 60 (4), 1048–1050; Qu, J., 1993b. The effect of slightly weakened interfaces on the overall elastic properties of composite materials. Mechanics of Materials 14, 269–281] is adopted to model spherical particles having imperfect interfaces in the composites and is incorporated into the micromechanical framework. Based on the Eshelby’s micromechanics, the effective elastic moduli of three-phase particulate composites are derived. A damage model is subsequently considered in accordance with the Weibull’s probabilistic function to characterize the varying probability of evolution of weakened interface between the inclusion and the matrix. The proposed micromechanical elastic damage model is applied to the uniaxial, biaxial and triaxial tensile loadings to predict the various stress–strain responses. Comparisons between the present predictions with other numerical and analytical predictions and available experimental data are conducted to assess the potential of the present framework.  相似文献

Expressions for thermodynamic potentials (internal energy, Helmholtz energy, Gibbs energy and enthalpy) of a thermoelastic material are developed under the assumption of small strains and finite changes in the thermal variable (temperature or entropy). The literature provides expressions for the Helmholtz energy in terms of strain and temperature, most often as expansions to the second order in strain and to a higher order in temperature changes, which ensures an affine stress–strain relation and a certain temperature dependence of the moduli of the material. Expressions are here developed for the four potentials in terms of all four possible pairs of independent variables. First, an expression is obtained for each potential as a quadratic function of its natural mechanical variable with coefficients depending on its natural thermal variable that are identified in terms of the moduli of the material. The form of the coefficients’ dependence on the thermal variable is not specified beforehand so as to obtain the most general expressions compatible with an affine stress–strain relation. Then, from each potential expressed in terms of its natural variables, expressions are derived for the other three potentials in terms of these same variables using the Gibbs–Helmholtz equations. The paper provides a thermodynamic framework for the constitutive modeling of thermoelastic materials undergoing small strains but finite changes in the thermal variables, the properties of which are liable to depend on the thermal variables.  相似文献

The fabrication of a special kind of dual-phase composite consisting of a hard matrix and ductile phase, such as metals with bimodal grain size distribution, is a promising strategy for improving the tensile ductility of nanocrystalline (nc)/ultrafine-grained (ufg) materials (Wang et al., 2002). This strategy is, however, challenged by the low reproducibility from low controllability of microstructural parameters and the existence of counterexamples (Prasad et al., 2009). The key to meet these challenges is to control the bimodal microstructural parameters to enable quantificational investigation of the relation between mechanical properties and microstructural parameters, and then set up a correlative quantitative model. In this paper, a new micromechanical model based on the propagation and multiplication of localized deformation bands is developed. To assess the model, a series of hypo-eutectoid Cu–Al alloys with controllable bimodal structures are prepared and their stress–strain curves in tension, together with those of bimodal copper (Wang et al., 2002) and bimodal Al–Mg alloys (Han et al., 2005) are predicted. Close agreement between the model-predicted and experimental results is obtained. The strength and uniform ductility of bimodal materials are observed in strong relation to the microstructural and constitutive parameters of volume fraction, strain hardening coefficient, and size of the coarse-grained ductile phase. Additionally, appropriate microstructural and constitutive parameters to achieve effective toughening can also be estimated according to the model.  相似文献

The Method of Integrodifferential Relations for Linear Elasticity Problems   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Some possible modifications of the governing equations of the linear theory of elasticity are considered. The stress–strain relation is specified by an integral equality instead of the local Hooke’s law. The modified integrodifferential boundary value problem is reduced to the minimization of a nonnegative functional under differential constraints. A numerical algorithm based on polynomial approximations of unknown functions (stresses and displacements) is developed and applied to linear elasticity problems. The bilateral estimation criteria of solution errors are proposed in order to analyze the algorithm convergence rate. The numerical results obtained by applying the integrodifferential relation method and the conventional variational method are compared and discussed.  相似文献

A new method for determining the overall behavior of composite materials comprising nonlinear viscoelastic and elasto-viscoplastic constituents is presented. Part I of this work showed that upon use of an implicit time-discretization scheme, the evolution equations describing the constitutive behavior of the phases can be reduced to the minimization of an incremental energy function. This minimization problem is rigorously equivalent to a nonlinear thermoelastic problem with a transformation strain which is a nonuniform field (not even uniform within the phases). In part I of this paper the nonlinearity was handled using a variational (or secant) technique. In this second part of the study, a proper modification of the second-order procedure of Ponte Castañeda is proposed and leads to replacing, at each time-step, the actual nonlinear viscoelastic composite by a linear viscoelastic one. The linearized problem is even further simplified by using an “effective internal variable” in each individual phase. The resulting predictions are in good agreement with exact results and improve on the predictions of the secant model proposed in part I of this paper.  相似文献

The initial and subsequent yield surfaces for an anisotropic and pressure-dependent 2D stochastic cellular material, which represents solid foams, are investigated under biaxial loading using finite element analysis. Scalar measures of stress and strain, namely characteristic stress and characteristic strain, are used to describe the constitutive response of cellular material along various stress paths. The coupling between loading path and strain hardening is then investigated in characteristic stress–strain domain. The nature of the flow rule that best describes the plastic flow of cellular solid is also investigated. An incremental plasticity framework is proposed to describe the pressure-dependent plastic flow of 2D stochastic cellular solids. The proposed plasticity framework adopts the anisotropic and pressure-dependent yield function recently introduced by Alkhader and Vural [Alkhader M., Vural M., 2009a. An energy-based anisotropic yield criterion for cellular solids and validation by biaxial FE simulations. J. Mech. Phys. Solids 57(5), 871–890]. It has been shown that the proposed yield function can be simply calibrated using elastic constants and flow stresses under uniaixal loading. Comparison of stress fields predicted by continuum plasticity model to the ones obtained from FE analysis shows good agreement for the range of loading paths and strains investigated.  相似文献

Based on the general concept of the secant moduli method, together with a new way of evaluating the average matrix effective stress originally proposed by Qiu and Weng (“A Theory of Plasticity for Porous Materials and Particle-Reinforced Composites”, ASME J. Appl. Mech. (1992), 59, 261.), a method for nonlinear effective properties of general aligned fiber or void composites is proposed. The method is capable of predicting composite (especially for porous materials) yielding under a hydrostatic load. Compared to the Tandon and Weng (“A Theory of Particle-Reinforced Plasticity,” ASME J. Appl. Mech. (1988), 55, 126.), model the proposed method always gives softer prediction in the uniaxial tension. The proposed method will predict the same nonlinear stress and strain relation as the Ponte Castaneda (“The Effective Mechanical Properties of Nonlinear Isotropic Composite,” J. Mech. Phys. Solids (1991), 39, 45.) variational model if the same estimates or bounds for the linear comparison composite are adopted.  相似文献

In this work, the large deformation behaviour under monotonic loading and unloading of a high density polyethylene (HDPE) is studied. To analyze the nonlinear time-dependent response of the material, mechanical tests were conducted at room temperature under constant true strain rates and stress relaxation conditions. A physically-based inelastic model written under finite strain formulation is proposed to describe the mechanical behaviour of HDPE. In the model, the inelastic mechanisms involve two parallel elements: a visco-hyperelastic network resistance acting in parallel with a viscoelastic–viscoplastic intermolecular resistance where the amorphous and crystalline phases are explicitly taken into consideration. The semicrystalline polymer is considered as a two-phase composite. The influence of the crystallinity on the loading and unloading behaviour is investigated. Numerical results are compared to experimental data. It is shown that the model is able to accurately reproduce the experimental observations corresponding to monotonic loading, unloading and stress relaxation behaviours at different strain levels. Finally, the model capabilities to capture cyclic loading–unloading behaviour up to large strains are discussed. To demonstrate the improved modelling capabilities, simulations are also performed using the original model of Boyce et al. [Boyce, M.C., Socrate, S., Llana, P.G., 2000. Constitutive model for the finite deformation stress–strain behavior of poly(ethylene terephthalate) above the glass transition. Polymer 41, 2183–2201] modified by Ahzi et al.
