This article describes the synthesis and molecular characterization of thermal polymeric iniferters, based on hydroxy‐terminated poly(tetrahydrofuran) (PTHF), bearing thiuram disulfide groups along the chain. Thermal polymerization after the addition of styrene (S) and N‐methylmaleimide (MI) to these PTHF‐based polymeric iniferters yielded segmented PTHF (SMI‐block‐PTHF)n block copolymers that proved to have a single Tg. The multiblock copolymers were molecularly characterized by elemental analysis, IR, and NMR. The thermal stability, as checked by thermogravimetric analysis, proved to be good up to about 350 °C. A size exclusion chromatography/differential viscosity (DV) analysis showed that the molecular weights of the synthesized single‐phase multiblock copolymers were sufficiently high (several times the estimated molecular weight between two adjacent entanglements) to determine the entanglement density from the rubbery plateau modulus, for which the method developed by S. Wu (J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 1989, 27, 723–741) was applied. The entanglement density of flexibilized SMI proved to be about 20–25% higher than that of the nonflexibilized SMI. This increase is disappointing, and more work, based on the described concept, is required to achieve the desired enhancement of the toughness. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Synthesis of cysteine‐terminated linear polystyrene (PS)‐b‐poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL)‐b‐poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/or poly(tert‐butyl acrylate)(PtBA)‐b‐poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) copolymers was carried out using sequential quadruple click reactions including thiol‐ene, copper‐catalyzed azide–alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC), Diels–Alder, and nitroxide radical coupling (NRC) reactions. N‐acetyl‐L ‐cysteine methyl ester was first clicked with α‐allyl‐ω‐azide‐terminated PS via thiol‐ene reaction to create α‐cysteine‐ω‐azide‐terminated PS. Subsequent CuAAC reaction with PCL, followed by the introduction of the PMMA/or PtBA and PEG blocks via Diels–Alder and NRC, respectively, yielded final cysteine‐terminated multiblock copolymers. By 1H NMR spectroscopy, the DPns of the blocks in the final multiblock copolymers were found to be close to those of the related polymer precursors, indicating that highly efficient click reactions occurred for polymer–polymer coupling. Successful quadruple click reactions were also confirmed by gel permeation chromatography. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2012  相似文献

The polymerization of 4‐vinylpyridine was conducted in the presence of a cyclic trithiocarbonate (4,7‐diphenyl‐[1,3]dithiepane‐2‐thione) as a reversible addition–fragmentation transfer (RAFT) polymerization agent, and a multiblock polymer with narrow‐polydispersity blocks was prepared. Two kinds of multiblock copolymers of styrene and 4‐vinylpyridine, that is, (ABA)n multi‐triblock copolymers with polystyrene or poly(4‐vinylpyridine) as the outer blocks, were prepared with multiblock polystyrene or poly(4‐vinylpyridine) as a macro‐RAFT agent, respectively. GPC data for the original polymers and polymers cleaved by amine demonstrated the successful synthesis of amphiphilic multiblock copolymers of styrene and 4‐vinylpyridine via two‐step polymerization. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A multiblock copolymer consisting of hard (poly(arylene ether sulfone)) and soft (poly(alkyl disulfide)) segments was successfully synthesized by oxidative coupling of the corresponding thiol‐terminated oligomers. Its structure was confirmed by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The GPC data (Mw = 82,000, Mw/Mn = 2.7) and inherent viscosity (0.67 dL g−1) indicated the formation of a high‐molecular‐weight multiblock copolymer, while AFM and DSC indicated a microphase‐separated morphology. Tensile testing of the multiblock copolymer films showed a large elongation at break, which is characteristic of microphase‐separated hard/soft multiblock copolymers. Over 90% of the elongation at break of damaged samples (notched or cut) was recovered by UV irradiation. The elongation recovery was proportional to the UV irradiation energy, and the high recovery was achieved by relatively weak irradiation (<170 J cm−2). The high content of disulfide bonds in the multiblock copolymer resulted in a lower self‐healing energy. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Multiarm star‐branched polymers based on poly(styrene‐b‐isobutylene) (PS‐PIB) block copolymer arms were synthesized under controlled/living cationic polymerization conditions using the 2‐chloro‐2‐propylbenzene (CCl)/TiCl4/pyridine (Py) initiating system and divinylbenzene (DVB) as gel‐core‐forming comonomer. To optimize the timing of isobutylene (IB) addition to living PS⊕, the kinetics of styrene (St) polymerization at −80°C were measured in both 60 : 40 (v : v) methyl cyclohexane (MCHx) : MeCl and 60 : 40 hexane : MeCl cosolvents. For either cosolvent system, it was found that the polymerizations followed first‐order kinetics with respect to the monomer and the number of actively growing chains remained invariant. The rate of polymerization was slower in MCHx : MeCl (kapp = 2.5 × 10−3 s−1) compared with hexane : MeCl (kapp = 5.6 × 10−3 s−1) ([CCl]o = [TiCl4]/15 = 3.64 × 10−3M; [Py] = 4 × 10−3M; [St]o = 0.35M). Intermolecular alkylation reactions were observed at [St]o = 0.93M but could be suppressed by avoiding very high St conversion and by setting [St]o ≤ 0.35M. For St polymerization, kapp = 1.1 × 10−3 s−1 ([CCl]o = [TiCl4]/15 = 1.82 × 10−3M; [Py] = 4 × 10−3M; [St]o = 0.35M); this was significantly higher than that observed for IB polymerization (kapp = 3.0 × 10−4 s−1; [CCl]o = [Py] = [TiCl4]/15 = 1.86 × 10−3M; [IB]o = 1.0M). Blocking efficiencies were higher in hexane : MeCl compared with MCHx : MeCl cosolvent system. Star formation was faster with PS‐PIB arms compared with PIB homopolymer arms under similar conditions. Using [DVB] = 5.6 × 10−2M = 10 times chain end concentration, 92% of PS‐PIB arms (Mn,PS = 2600 and Mn,PIB = 13,400 g/mol) were linked within 1 h at −80°C with negligible star–star coupling. It was difficult to achieve complete linking of all the arms prior to the onset of star–star coupling. Apparently, the presence of the St block allows the PS‐PIB block copolymer arms to be incorporated into growing star polymers by an additional mechanism, namely, electrophilic aromatic substitution (EAS), which leads to increased rates of star formation and greater tendency toward star–star coupling. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Ethylene glycol (EG) initiated, hydroxyl‐telechelic poly(L ‐lactide) (PLLA) was employed as a macroinitiator in the presence of a stannous octoate catalyst in the ring‐opening polymerization of 5‐methyl‐5‐benzyloxycarbonyl‐1,3‐dioxan‐2‐one (MBC) with the goal of creating A–B–A‐type block copolymers having polycarbonate outer blocks and a polyester center block. Because of transesterification reactions involving the PLLA block, multiblock copolymers of the A–(B–A)n–B–A type were actually obtained, where A is poly(5‐methyl‐5‐benzyloxycarbonyl‐1,3‐dioxan‐2‐one), B is PLLA, and n is greater than 0. 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy of the product copolymers yielded evidence of the multiblock structure and provided the lactide sequence length. For a PLLA macroinitiator with a number‐average molecular weight of 2500 g/mol, the product block copolymer had an n value of 0.8 and an average lactide sequence length (consecutive C6H8O4 units uninterrupted by either an EG or MBC unit) of 6.1. For a PLLA macroinitiator with a number‐average molecular weight of 14,400 g/mol, n was 18, and the average lactide sequence length was 5.0. Additional evidence of the block copolymer architecture was revealed through the retention of PLLA crystallinity as measured by differential scanning calorimetry and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction. Multiblock copolymers with PLLA crystallinity could be achieved only with isolated PLLA macroinitiators; sequential addition of MBC to high‐conversion L ‐lactide polymerizations resulted in excessive randomization, presumably because of residual L ‐lactide monomer. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The free‐radical copolymerization of itaconic acid (IA) and styrene in solutions of dimethylformamide and d6‐dimethyl sulfoxide (50 wt %) has been studied by 1H NMR kinetic experiments. Monomer conversion versus time data were used to estimate the ratio kp · kt−0.5 for various comonomer mixture compositions. The ratio kp · kt−0.5 varies from 5.2 · 10−2 for pure styrene to 2.0 · 10−2 mol0.5 L−0.5 s−0.5 for pure IA, indicating a significant decrease in the rate of polymerization. Individual monomer conversion versus time traces were used to map out the comonomer mixture–composition drift up to overall monomer conversions of 60%. Within this conversion range, a slight but significant depletion of styrene in the monomer feed can be observed. This depletion becomes more pronounced at higher levels of IA in the initial comonomer mixture. The kinetic information is supplemented by molecular weight data for IA/styrene copolymers obtained by variation of the comonomer mixture composition. A significant decrease in molecular weight of a factor of 2 can be observed when increasing the mole fraction of IA in the initial reaction mixture from 0 to 0.5. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A series of ABA amphiphilic triblock copolymers possessing polystyrene (PS) central hydrophobic blocks, one group with “short” PS blocks (DP = 54–86) and one with “long” PS blocks (DP = 183–204) were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization. The outer hydrophilic blocks were various lengths of poly(oligoethylene glycol methyl ether) methacrylate, a comb‐like polymer. The critical aggregation concentrations were recorded for certain block copolymer samples and were found to be in the range circa 10−9 mol L−1 for short PS blocks and circa 10−12 mol L−1 for long PS blocks. Dilute aqueous solutions were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and demonstrated that the short PS block copolymers formed spherical micelles and the long PS block copolymers formed predominantly spherical micelles with smaller proportions of cylindrical and Y‐branched cylindrical micelles. Dynamic light scattering analysis results agreed with the TEM observations demonstrating variations in micelle size with PS and POEGMA chain length: the hydrodynamic diameters (DH) of the shorter PS block copolymer micelles increased with increasing POEGMA block lengths while maintaining similar PS micellar core diameters (DC); in contrast the values of DH and DC for the longer PS block copolymer micelles decreased. Surface‐pressure isotherms were recorded for two of the samples and these indicated close packing of a short PS block copolymer at the air–water interface. The aggregate solutions were demonstrated to be stable over a 38‐day period with no change in aggregate size or noticeable precipitation. The cloud point temperatures of certain block copolymer aggregate solutions were measured and found to be in the range 76–93 °C; significantly these were ∼11 °C higher in temperature than those of POEGMA homopolymer samples with similar chain lengths. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel cleavable multiblock copolymer was synthesized by ring‐opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of cyclooctene (COE) and a flexible 27‐membered macrocyclic olefin (MCO), which is acted as the spacer to collect the polymer structure block by block. MCO 2 was prepared via ring‐closing metathesis of the long chain alkyldiene, and then 2 was well‐ conducted ROMP with COE to provide the multiblock copolymer [Poly(COE)‐ 2 ]m consisting of homo‐Poly(COE) blocks and ring‐opened 2 segments with different molecular weights (Mn = 30.0 – 249.6 × 103) and polydispersity index (PDI) within 1.45–1.67 as variation of the feed ratio of COE to 2 . The multiblock copolymer chain containing weak ester linkage can be cleaved under alkali condition to afford the carboxyl‐telechelic Poly(COE) blocks with much lower molecular weights (Mn,h = 3.6–35.7 × 103) and slight higher PDIs (1.65–1.88). The average block number on multiblock copolymer chain was obtained from the ratio of Mn to Mn,h and was reached up to the value of 7–16. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of aliphatic–aromatic multiblock copolyesters consisting of poly(ethylene‐co‐1,6‐hexene terephthalate) (PEHT) and poly(L ‐lactic acid) (PLLA) were synthesized successfully by chain‐extension reaction of dihydroxyl terminated PEHT‐OH prepolymer and dihydroxyl terminated PLLA‐OH prepolymer using toluene‐2,4‐diisoyanate as a chain extender. PEHT‐OH prepolymers were prepared by two step reactions using dimethyl terephthalate, ethylene glycol, and 1,6‐hexanediol as raw materials. PLLA‐OH prepolymers were prepared by direct polycondensation of L ‐lactic acid in the presence of 1,4‐butanediol. The chemical structures, the molecular weights and the thermal properties of PEHT‐OH, PLLA‐OH prepolymers, and PEHT‐PLLA copolymers were characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR, GPC, TG, and DSC. This synthetic method has been proved to be very efficient for the synthesis of high‐molecular‐weight copolyesters (say, higher than Mw = 3 × 105 g/mol). Only one glass transition temperature was found in the DSC curves of PEHT‐PLLA copolymers, indicating that the PLLA and PEHT segments had good miscibility. TG curves showed that all the copolyesters had good thermal stabilities. The resulting novel aromatic–aliphatic copolyesters are expected to find a potential application in the area of biodegradable polymer materials. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We have designed and synthesized rod–coil–rod triblock copolymers of controlled molecular weight by two‐step nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization, where the rod part consists of “mesogen‐jacketed liquid crystalline polymer” (MJLCP). The MJLCP segment examined in our studies is poly{2,5‐bis[(4‐methoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrene} (MPCS) while the coil part is polyisoprene (PI). Characterization of the triblock copolymers by GPC, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopies, TGA, DSC confirmed that the triblock copolymers were comprised of microphase‐separated low Tg amorphous PI and high Tg PMPCS blocks. Analysis of POM and 1D, 2D‐WAXD demonstrated that the triblock copolymers formed nematic liquid crystal phase. Morphological studies using TEM indicated the sample formed lamellar structure. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 45: 5949–5956, 2007  相似文献

Copolymerization of styrene and acrylonitrile was carried out via reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer process (RAFT) in the presence of cumyl dithiobenzoate with AIBN as initiator. Copolymerization proceeded in a controlled/“living” fashion, and the copolymer composition depended on the feed ratio of monomer pairs. Block copolymers comprising styrene and acrylonitrile (SAN) segments and various functional blocks were synthesized through chain extension using the first blocks as macromolecular chain transfer agents (macroCTAs). Since the polymerization of both blocks proceeded through the RAFT process, the resulting block copolymers exhibited relatively narrow molecular weight distribution, with polydispersity indices in the range of 1.29–1.46. Gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and 1H NMR and FTIR measurements confirmed the successful synthesis of the functionalized block copolymers. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of poly(styrene‐block‐ferrocenyldimethylsilane) copolymers (SF) with different relative molar masses of the blocks were prepared by sequential anionic polymerization. The bulk morphology of these polymers, studied by TEM and SAXS, showed well‐ordered lamellar and cylindrical domains as well as disordered micellar structures. Temperature‐dependent rheological measurements exhibited an order–disorder transition for SF 17/8 (the numbers refer to the relative molar masses in 103 g/mol) between 170 and 180°C, and an order–order transition for SF 9/19 between 190 and 200°C. The morphologies of binary blends of the diblocks with homopolymer were also investigated. In the blends the molar mass of the homopolymer was always less than the molar mass of the matching block. Ordered spheres on a bcc lattice and double‐gyroid morphology were observed for the blends. The double‐gyroid morphology was found only in F‐rich diblock/homopolymer systems. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 37: 1009–1021, 1999  相似文献

Novel poly(l ‐lactide) (PLLA)/poly(d ‐lactide) (PDLA)/poly(tetrahydrofuran) (PTHF) multiblock copolymers with designed molecular structure were synthesized by a two‐stage procedure. Well‐defined PDLA‐PLLA‐PTHF‐PLLA‐PDLA pentablock copolymers were prepared by sequential ring opening polymerization of l ‐ and d ‐lactides starting from PTHF glycol, with the length of the (equimolar) PLLA and PDLA blocks being varied. Then, these dihydroxyl‐terminated pentamers were transformed into multiblock copolymers by melt chain‐extension with hexamethylene diisocyanate–being the first time that the coupling of pentablock units is reported. The successful formation of macromolecular chains with a multiblock and well‐defined architecture was demonstrated by 1H NMR spectroscopy. The thermal properties and structuring of the resulting materials were investigated by means of DSC and WAXD measurements and DMA analysis. Stereocomplexation was found to be promoted during solution and melt crystallization. This approach affords materials combining the high rigidity and strength (other than improved thermal resistance) of the hard stereocomplex crystallites with the flexibility imparted by the soft block, whereby their properties can be finely tailored through the composition of the basic pentablock units without limitations on the final molecular weight. The adopted reaction conditions make this process highly appealing in view of the possibility to perform it in extruder. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. The positron annihilation lifetime measurements have been performed on a number of amorphous styrene–methyl acrylate copolymers and styrene–butyl methacrylate copolymers. The densities of copolymers were obtained with immersion method by using a capillary pycnometer and the average molecular weights were determined by gel chromatography. The lifetime τ3 of ortho‐positronium (o‐Ps) pick‐off annihilation have been found to correlate with side group volume and polarity of macromolecular chains in the copolymers, and relative intensity I3 is attributed mainly to the electron‐attracting groups trapping the spur electrons and positrons. The experimental results have been discussed on the basis of the structural variation of macromolecular chains. In addition, the PALS measurement as a function of time for polystyrene and several styrene–methyl acrylate copolymers has also been performed. The result shows that an electric field is built in polymers during extended positron annihilation spectroscopy measurement, and the field effect is a main factor which causes the decrease in I3 with time. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Free‐radical copolymerization of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) with N‐vinylpyrrolidone (VPD) was carried out at 50 °C using 3.0 mol · L?1 of N,N′‐dimethylformamide solution and 9.0 · 10?3 mol · L?1 of 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile as an initiator. The modification reaction of GMA‐VPD copolymers with a model bioactive carboxylic acid, 6‐methoxy‐α‐methyl‐2‐naphthaleneacetic acid (naproxen), was studied in the homogeneous phase using basic catalysts. This article describes the synthesis and characterization of [polystyrene‐b‐poly(2‐vinylpyridine)]n star‐block copolymers with the poly(2‐vinylpyridine) blocks at the periphery. A two‐step living anionic polymerization method was used. Firstly, oligo(styryl)lithium grafted poly(divinylbenzene) cores were used as multifunctional initiators to initiate living anionic polymerization of styrene in benzene at room temperature. Secondly, vinylpyridine was polymerized at the periphery of these living (polystyrene)n stars in tetrahydrofuran at ?78 °C. The resulting copolymers were characterized using size exclusion chromatography, multiangle laser light scattering, 1H NMR, elemental analysis, and intrinsic viscosity measurements. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis of two well‐defined 2,2,5‐trimethyl‐4‐phenyl‐3‐azahexane‐3‐nitroxide‐terminated poly(2‐methyl‐2‐oxazoline) with narrow dispersity (Mw/Mn = 1.1) has been achieved for the first time. The insertion of the alkoxyamine end groups at one or both ends of poly(2‐methyl‐2‐oxazoline) (PMEOX) chains has been successfully done using a method based on “terminating reagent method.” These macroinitiators have molecular weights ranging from 6.3 × 103 to 9.4 × 103 g mol?1. In contrast, attempt to introduce the alkoxyamine group at one end of PMEOX chain through the “initiator method” has furnished a mixture of alkoxyamine‐graft polyoxazolines because of rearrangement of alkoxyamine occurring during the synthesis of PMEOX. The macroinitiators obtained by terminating reagent method have been used successfully for polymerization of styrene by nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization (NMP), which exhibited all the expected features of a controlled system. The control of NMP has been proved by a good agreement between theoretical and experimental molecular weights and by narrow dispersity (Mw/Mn < 1.2). Different types of well‐defined multiblock copolymers have been prepared: diblock copolymers poly[(2‐methyl‐2‐oxazoline)‐b‐(styrene)] (PMEOX‐b‐PS) and, for the first time, triblock copolymers poly[(styrene)‐b‐(2‐methyl‐2‐oxazoline)‐b‐(styrene)] (PS‐b‐PMEOX‐b‐PS). © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. High‐molecular‐weight (MW) symmetrical multiblock copolymers, based on the hydrophobic monomers styrene (Sty) and methyl methacrylate (MMA), and the more polar monomer, 2‐vinyl pyridine (2VPy), were prepared using stepwise reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer polymerization. All copolymers shared a common poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) midblock, introduced as a bifunctional macromolecular chain transfer agent. In total, five ABA triblock copolymers, five ABCBA pentablock terpolymers, and two ABCDCBA heptablock quaterpolymers (comprising four different monomer types) were synthesized. The MWs of the multiblock polymers were determined using gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy, with the latter values being closer to the theoretically expected, whereas GPC MW distributions were relatively narrow, broadening with the number of blocks. The compositions of the synthesized polymers, as determined by 1H NMR spectroscopy, were also close to the expected values. Finally, films cast from chloroform solutions of the pentablock terpolymers P2VPy‐b‐PSty‐b‐PEG‐b‐PSty‐b‐P2VPy, PSty‐b‐PMMA‐b‐PEG‐b‐PMMA‐b‐PSty, and P2VPy‐b‐PMMA‐b‐PEG‐b‐PMMA‐b‐P2VPy examined using transmission electron microscopy exhibited PSty and PMMA cylinders (first two) and lamellae (third terpolymer). © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A variety of new polymeric materials ranging from soft rubbers to hard, tough, and brittle plastics were prepared from the cationic copolymerization of regular soybean oil, low saturation soybean oil (LoSatSoy oil), or conjugated LoSatSoy oil with styrene and divinylbenzene initiated by boron trifluoride diethyl etherate (BF3 · OEt2) or related modified initiators. The relationship between the dynamic mechanical properties of the various polymers obtained and the stoichiometry, the types of soybean oils and crosslinking agents, and the different modified initiators was investigated. The room‐temperature storage moduli ranged from 6 × 106 to 2 × 109 Pa, whereas the single glass‐transition temperatures (Tg) varied from approximately 0 to 105 °C. These properties were comparable to those of commercially available rubbery materials and conventional plastics. The crosslinking densities of the new polymers were largely dependent on the concentration of the crosslinking agent and the type of soybean oil employed and varied from 74 to 4 × 104 mol/m3. The Tg increased and the intensity of the loss factor decreased irregularly with an increase in the logarithmic crosslinking densities of the polymers. Empirical equations were established to describe the effect of crosslinking on the loss factor in these new polymeric materials. The polymers based on conjugated LoSatSoy oil, styrene, and divinylbenzene possessed the highest room‐temperature moduli and Tg 's. These new soybean oil polymers appear promising as replacements for petroleum‐based polymeric materials. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 38: 2721–2738, 2000  相似文献
