Fifteen samples of sodium poly(styrene sulfonate) with weight‐average molecular weights of 3 × 104 to 8 × 105 have been studied by static and dynamic light scattering and viscometry in 0.05 and 0.5 M aqueous NaCl at 25 °C. The measured radii of gyration, translational diffusion coefficients, and intrinsic viscosities at the lower salt concentration exhibit molecular weight dependencies stronger than those predictable for uncharged flexible chains in the good solvent limit. These data and those at the higher NaCl concentration are analyzed, along with previous intrinsic viscosity data covering a broad molecular weight range, in the framework of the quasi‐two‐parameter (QTP) theory with the wormlike chain as the model. It is shown that the relevant theories for the expansion factors in the QTP scheme combined with these theories for the unperturbed wormlike chain are capable of describing the experimental data with a degree of accuracy similar to that known for nonionic flexible polymers. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of four well‐defined poly(ferrocenyldimethylsilane) (PFS) samples spanning a molecular weight range of approximately 10,000–100,000 g mol−1 was synthesized by the living anionic polymerization of dimethyl[1]silaferrocenophane initiated with n‐BuLi. The polymers possessed narrow polydispersities and were used to characterize the solution behavior of PFS in tetrahydrofuran (THF). The weight‐average molecular weights (Mw ) of the polymers were determined by low‐angle laser light scattering (LALLS), conventional gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and GPC equipped with a triple detector (refractive index, light scattering, and viscosity). The molecular weight calculated by conventional GPC, with polystyrene standards, underestimated the true value in comparison with LALLS and GPC with the triple detection system. The Mark–Houwink parameter a for PFS in THF was 0.62 (k = 2.5 × 10−4), which is indicative of fairly marginal polymer–solvent interactions. The scaling exponent between the radius of gyration and Mw was 0.54, also consistent with marginal polymer–solvent interactions for PFS in THF. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of a hydrolyzable monomer (tert‐butyldimethylsilyl methacrylate) with cumyl dithiobenzoate and 2‐cyanoprop‐2‐yl dithiobenzoate as chain‐transfer agents was studied in toluene solutions at 70 °C. The resulting homopolymers had low polydispersity (polydispersity index < 1.3) up to 96% monomer conversion with molecular weights at high conversions close to the theoretical prediction. The profiles of the number‐average molecular weight versus the conversion revealed controlled polymerization features with chain‐transfer constants expected between 1.0 and 10. A series of poly(tert‐butyldimethylsilyl methacrylate)s were synthesized over the molecular weight range of 1.0 × 104 to 3.0 × 104, as determined by size exclusion chromatography. As strong differences of hydrodynamic volumes in tetrahydrofuran between poly(methyl methacrylate), polystyrene standards, and poly(tert‐butyldimethylsilyl methacrylate) were observed, true molecular weights were obtained from a light scattering detector equipped in a triple‐detector size exclusion chromatograph. The Mark–Houwink–Sakurada parameters for poly(tert‐butyldimethylsilyl methacrylate) were assessed to obtain directly true molecular weight values from size exclusion chromatography with universal calibration. In addition, a RAFT agent efficiency above 94% was confirmed at high conversions by both light scattering detection and 1H NMR spectroscopy. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Sodium poly(isoprenesulfonate) (NaPIS) fractions consisting of 1,4‐ and 3,4‐isomeric units (0.44:0.56) and ranging in molecular weight from 4.9 × 103 to 2.0 × 105 were studied by static and dynamic light scattering, sedimentation equilibrium, and viscometry in aqueous NaCl of a salt concentration (Cs) of 0.5‐M at 25 °C. Viscosity data were also obtained at Cs = 0.05, 0.1, and 1 M. The measured z‐average radii of gyration 〈S2z1/2, intrinsic viscosities [η], and translational diffusion coefficients D at Cs = 0.5‐M showed that high molecular weight NaPIS in the aqueous salt behaves like a flexible chain in the good solvent limit. On the assumption that the distribution of 1,4‐ and 3,4‐isomeric units in the NaPIS chain is completely random, the [η] data for high molecular weights at Cs = 0.5 and 1 M were analyzed first in the conventional two‐parameter scheme to estimate the unperturbed dimension at infinite molecular weight and the mean binary cluster integral. By further invoking a coarse‐graining of the NaPIS molecule, all the [η] and D data in the entire molecular weight range were then analyzed on the basis of the current theories for the unperturbed wormlike chain combined with the quasi‐two‐parameter theory. It is shown that the experimental 〈S2z, [η], and D are explained by the theories with a degree of accuracy similar to that known for uncharged linear flexible homopolymers. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The aggregation of Erwinia (E) gum in a 0.2 M NaCl aqueous solution was investigated by multi‐angle laser light scattering and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) combined with light scattering. The GPC chromatograms of five fractions contained two peaks; the fractions had the same elution volume but different peak areas, suggesting that aggregates and single chains coexisted in the solution at 25 °C. The apparent weight‐average molecular weights (Mw) of the aggregates and single chains for each fraction were all about 2.1 × 106 and 7.8 × 104, respectively. This indicates that the aggregates were composed of about 27 molecules of E gum in the concentration range used (1.0 × 10−6 to 5.0 × 10−4 g/mL). The weight fraction of the aggregates (wag) increased with increasing concentration, but the aggregates still existed even in an extremely dilute solution. The fractionation process and polymer concentration hardly affected the apparent aggregation number but significantly changed wag. The E‐gum Mw decreased sharply with an increase in temperature. When the E‐gum solution was kept at 100 °C, wag decreased sharply for 20 h and leveled off after 100 h. Once the aggregates were decomposed at a higher temperature, no aggregation was observed in the solution at 25 °C, indicating that the aggregation was irreversible. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. High molecular weight poly(2,5-benzophenone) derivatives were prepared by Ni(0)-catalyzed coupling of 4′-substituted 2,5-dichlorobenzophenones. Monomers were synthesized by the Friedel–Crafts reaction of 2,5-dichlorobenzoyl chloride and alkyl-substituted benzenes in the presence of aluminum chloride. The resulting polymers are soluble and show no evidence of crystallinity by DSC. Number average molecular weights are in the range of 9.2 × 103–11.7 × 103 g/mol by multiple angle laser light scattering (MALLS). Molecular weights obtained by MALLS are only slightly lower (∼90%) than those obtained by GPC (polystyrene standards). These polymers exhibit high thermal stability with glass transition temperatures ranging from 173 to 225°C and weight loss occurring above 450°C in nitrogen and 430°C in air. Additionally, the polymers were blended and the resulting polymer films appear to be miscible by DSC results. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J. Polym. Sci. A Polym. The present article considers the coil‐to‐globule transition behavior of atactic and syndiotactic poly(methyl methacrylates), (PMMA) in their theta solvent, n‐butyl chloride (nBuCl). Changes in Rh in these polymers with temperature in dilute theta solutions were investigated by dynamic light scattering. The hydrodynamic size of atactic PMMA (a‐PMMA‐1) in nBuCl (Mw: 2.55 × 106 g/mol) decreases to 61% of that in the unperturbed state at 13.0°C. Atactic PMMA (a‐PMMA‐2) with higher molecular weight (Mw: 3.3 × 106 g/mol) shows higher contraction in the same theta solvent (αη = Rh(T)/Rh (θ) = 0.44) at a lower temperature, 7.25°C. Although syndiotactic PMMA (s‐PMMA) has lower molecular weight than that of atactic samples (Mw: 1.2 × 106), a comparable chain collapse was observed (αη = 0.63) at 9.0°C. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A unique diblock copolymer ring and its linear triblock copolymer precursor composed of polystyrene and polydimethylsiloxane have been characterized by static and dynamic light scattering in dilute solution. The measurements were carried out with cyclohexane as the solvent over a temperature range of 12–35°C. Cyclohexane has the useful property that it is nearly isorefractive with the PDMS so that the PDMS block segments are invisible to the light-scattering technique and it is a theta solvent for polystyrene at 34.5°C. The block polymers in this work contain 35.1 wt % of styrene as determined by proton NMR. In the linear triblock polymer, the polystyrene is the center block with PDMS blocks on each side. Static light scattering measurements give 4.31 × 104 for the average molecular weight of the whole polymer. Light scattering also shows that the apparent theta temperature for the linear triblock is shifted by 15°C to a value of 20°C at which point the second virial coefficient drops sharply and phase separation begins to induce aggregation. The diblock ring, however, shows a strongly positive second virial coefficient and no aggregation even at 12°C which is the limit of these experiments. The diffusion coefficients of cyclic diblock (Dc) and linear triblock copolymer (D1) are measured by dynamic light scattering. The ratio of diffusion coefficients of cyclic and linear copolymers at 14.9°C and 30°C are Dc/Dl = 1.13 and 1.107 respectively. These compare well with prediction of 1.18 for this ratio from consideration of the hydrodynamics of matched linear and cyclic polymer chains. Dynamic light scattering quantitatively confirms that the linear copolymer experiences a solvent quality change near 20°C but the cyclic polymer remains in good solvent over the entire experimental temperature range. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

A series of monodispersed polydimenthylsiloxanes (PDMS) with molecular weights from 3K to 156K were synthesized. The intrinsic viscosity and absolute molecular weight of each monodispersed PDMS was measured and the Mark-Houwink equation for the PDMS series in toluene at 25°C was derived: [eta;]=2.88 × 10?4 M0.613. It was proven that the accurate molecular weight determination of polysiloxanes is not possible using polystyrene (PS) standards. It can be achieved either by using a gel permeation chromatographic method with PDMS standards or by a calculation from the Mark-Houwink equation using experimental values of intrinsic viscosity.  相似文献

Elastic and quasi-elastic light scattering data obtained from PS/PDMS/PMMA/toluene mixtures are reported. Several systems characterized by different concentrations and different molecular weights of PMMA are considered. For each of these systems, a systematic investigation is performed as a function of the scattering angle and the concentration of the PS/PDMS mixture using both techniques. The PMMA does not contribute directly to the scattered light since its increment of refractive index is zero. However the data show that its presence modifies substantially the apparent interaction parameter of PS and PDMS and the single diffusion coefficient of these polymers in the solution. The variations of these quantities with the concentration and molecular weight of PMMA are obtained. The data are analyzed within a simplified model combining based on the random phase approximation and the Rouse dynamics for ternary polymer mixtures. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The anionic polymerization of 2‐vinylnaphthalene (2VN) has been studied in tetrahydrofuran (THF) at ?78 °C and in toluene at 40 °C. 2VN polymerization in THF, toluene, or toluene/THF (99:1 v/v) initiated by sec‐butyllithium (sBuLi) indicates living characteristics, affording polymers with predefined molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distributions. Block copolymers of 2VN with methyl methacrylate (MMA) and tert‐butyl acrylate (tBA) have been synthesized successfully by sequential monomer addition in THF at ?78 °C initiated by an adduct of sBuLi–LiCl. The crossover propagation from poly(2‐vinylnaphthyllithium) (P2VN) macroanions to MMA and tBA appears to be living, the molecular weight and composition can be predicted, and the molecular weight distribution of the resulting block copolymer is narrow (weight‐average molecular/number‐average molecular weight < 1.3). Block copolymers with different chain lengths for the P2VN segment can easily be prepared by variations in the monomer ratios. The block copolymerization of 2VN with hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane also results in a block copolymer of P2VN and poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) contaminated with a significant amount of homo‐PDMS. Poly(2VN‐b‐nBA) (where nBA is n‐butyl acrylate) has also been prepared by the transesterification reaction of the poly(2VN‐b‐tBA) block copolymer. Size exclusion chromatography, Fourier transform infrared, and 1H NMR measurements indicate that the resulting polymers have the required architecture. The corresponding amphiphilic block copolymer of poly(2VN‐b‐AA) (where AA is acrylic acid) has been synthesized by acidic hydrolysis of the ester group of tert‐butyl from the poly(2VN‐b‐tBA) copolymer. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The pressure derivatives of the second virial coefficients [dA2/dP; 0.1 ≤ P (MPa) ≤ 35.0] for dilute polystyrene (PS) solutions in good, θ, and poor solvents were measured with static light scattering. The solvent quality improved (dA2/dP > 0) in the good and poor solvents that we investigated (toluene, chloroform; and methylcyclohexane) but deteriorated (dA2/dP < 0) in θ solvents (cyclohexane and 50‐50 cis, trans‐decalin). The effects of temperature [22 < T (°C) < 45] and molecular weight [25 × 103 < weight‐average molecular weight (amu mol?1) < 900 × 103] on dA2/dP for PS/cyclohexane solutions were examined. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. High‐molecular‐weight polybenzoxazine prepolymers containing polydimethylsiloane unit in the main‐chain have been synthesized from α,ω‐bis(aminopropyl)polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) (molecular weight = 248, 850, and 1622) and bisphenol‐A with formaldehyde. Moreover, another type of prepolymers was prepared using methylenedianiline (MDA) as codiamine with PDMS. The weight average molecular weight of the obtained prepolymers was estimated from size exclusion chromatography to be in the range of 8000–11,000. The chemical structures of the prepolymers were investigated by 1H NMR and IR analyses. The prepolymers gave transparent free standing films by casting their dioxane solution. The prepolymer films after thermally cured up to 240 °C gave brown colored transparent and flexible polybenzoxazine films. Tensile test of the films revealed that the elongation at break increased with increasing the molecular weight of PDMS unit. Dynamic mechanical analysis of the thermosets showed that the Tgs were as high as 238–270 °C. The thermosets also revealed high thermal stability as evidenced by the 5% weight loss temperatures in the range of 324–384 °C from thermogravimetic analysis. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The Ziegler–Natta system Cp*TiMe3/B(C6F5)3 catalyzed the copolymerization of ethylene and 1‐hexene in toluene into materials that were characterized by 1H and 13C{1H} NMR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and gel permeation chromatography. The effects of temperature and ethylene/1‐hexene and olefin/catalyst ratios on catalyst activities and copolymer molecular weights and molecular weight distributions were studied; the ethylene proportions varied from less than 5% to 85% or more. In addition, significant amounts of 1‐hexene were incorporated into the growing polymer chain in a 2,1‐fashion; consequently, conventional 13C NMR analytical methodologies for deducing monomer proportions and dispersions and polymer microstructures, based on a low 1,2‐incorporation of α‐olefin, did not work very well. A soluble (in toluene at ambient temperature) but very high molecular weight (weight‐average molecular weight ∼ 8 × 105, weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight = 1.8) rubbery copolymer that formed at −78 °C exhibited a predominantly alternating microstructure. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A series of water‐soluble semirigid thermoresponsive polymers with well‐defined molecular weights based on mesogen‐jacketed liquid crystal polymers (MJLCPs), poly[bis(N‐hydroxyisopropyl pyrrolidone) 2‐vinylterephthalate] (PHIPPVTA) have been synthesized via reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) revealed that the novel monomer and polymers have thermoresponsive properties with cloud point in the range between 10 and 90 °C. The cloud point was increased by 56.2 °C when the polymer molecular weight increased from 0.47 × 104 g mol?1 to 3.69 × 104 g mol?1. In addition, the cloud point of PHIPPVTA was decreased by 18.8 °C with the increase of polymer concentration from 5 to 10 mg mL?1. A slight increase (0.1–3.5 °C) of cloud point has been observed after knocking off the end‐groups of PHIPPVTA. Moreover, the cloud point of polymer increased with increasing of its molecular weight with or without the trithiocarbonate end‐groups, which showed the opposite trend comparing with other thermoresponsive polymers with flexible backbones. These polymers show a dramatic solvent isotopic effect that the cloud point in D2O was lower than in H2O. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2012  相似文献

Monoallyl compounds are not readily homopolymerized by a conventional free‐radical mechanism. However, we successfully performed the radical polymerization of allylbiguanide hydrochloride in a concentrated acid solution (hydrochloric acid or phosphoric acid) in the presence of a radical initiator at 50 °C. The polymer product was precipitated from the reaction solution through the addition of an excess amount of acetone. The precipitated crude polymer [polyallylbiguanide (PAB)] was then purified by dialysis. PAB was confirmed by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, and 1H NMR. The molecular weight range of PAB was 10,340–113,200, and PAB exhibited a low polydispersity (weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight = 1.04–1.68) by multi‐angle laser light scattering. The polymerization of allylbiguanide was quite sensitive to the protonic concentration of the inorganic acid. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Structure formation by coupling between formation of crosslinking points and liquid–liquid phase separation was investigated for aqueous methyl cellulose solution by small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) and light scattering (LS) techniques. The sol–gel phase diagram and the SAXS results suggested that the liquid–liquid phase separation occurred before gelation. By LS measurements, the structure due to the liquid–liquid phase separation was directly observed. By applying speckle analysis on the LS profiles, it was suggested that the gelation and the phase separation strongly coupled each other: the increase in the apparent molecular weight by crosslinking induced the liquid–liquid phase separation. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Soluble block copolymers based on natural rubber and polyurethane oligomers derived from 1,3 butane diol and toluene diisocyanate were synthesized for the first time. The dilute solution properties of these block copolymers dissolved in tetrahydrofuran (THF) were studied by viscometry and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The Mark–Houwink constants K and a of the block copolymer system were determined by the molecular weight data from GPC combined with the viscosity data. Both the values were found to be in the range usually given by flexible elastomers. The intrinsic viscosity values were found to decrease successively with a decrease in the NCO/OH ratio from 1.12 to 1.05. The unperturbed chain parameters, Kθ and B were determined from the viscosity data. The Kθ calculated was used to get the unperturbed end‐to‐end distance and radius of gyration of the block copolymer systems in THF. The viscosity data were also used to study the chain conformation in dilute solutions. It was found that the molecules adopt a compressed core and shell conformation in which the higher molecular weight component, NR, forms the shell, which compresses the PU core. All the block copolymers assume a compressed segregated core and shell model which changes to a partially segregated core and shell conformation, or partially Gaussian conformation, at the transition temperature located at 70 °C. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) networks having strands of molecular weight in the range 11,000–36,000 have been prepared by endlinking linear PDMS molecules of these molecular weights with a tetrafunctional linking agent. Absorption of a series of homologous linear PDMS molecules by the resulting PDMS networks has been investigated. The diffusion coefficients at 70°C were found to be rather large, 1 × 10?12–6 × 10?12 m2/s, and approximately inversely proportional to the molecular weight of the diffusing liquid, over the range 5000–38,000. The amount of liquid absorbed at equilibrium was relatively small, 10–80%, in good agreement in all cases with an especially simple version of the Flory–Huggins theory when the heat of mixing is made vanishingly small and only entropic terms are retained.  相似文献

Cellulose was dissolved in 6 wt % NaOH/4 wt % urea aqueous solution, which was proven by a 13C NMR spectrum to be a direct solvent of cellulose rather than a derivative aqueous solution system. Dilute solution behavior of cellulose in a NaOH/urea aqueous solution system was examined by laser light scattering and viscometry. The Mark–Houwink equation for cellulose in 6 wt % NaOH/4 wt % urea aqueous solution at 25 °C was [η] = 2.45 × 10?2 weight‐average molecular weight (Mw)0.815 (mL g?1) in the Mw region from 3.2 × 104 to 12.9 × 104. The persistence length (q), molar mass per unit contour length (ML), and characteristic ratio (C) of cellulose in the dilute solution were 6.0 nm, 350 nm?1, and 20.9, respectively, which agreed with the Yamakawa–Fujii theory of the wormlike chain. The results indicated that the cellulose molecules exist as semiflexible chains in the aqueous solution and were more extended than in cadoxen. This work provided a novel, simple, and nonpollution solvent system that can be used to investigate the dilute solution properties and molecular weight of cellulose. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
