We have studied the nonisothermal and isothermal crystallization kinetics of an aromatic thermotropic liquid crystalline polyimide synthesized from 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (PMDA) and 1,3-bis[4-(4′-aminophenoxy) cumyl] benzene (BACB) by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Polarized light microscopy (PLM) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) results confirm that this polyimide exhibits a smectic texture. Nonisothermal crystallization showed two strong and one weak exothermic peaks during cooling. The phase transition from isotropic melt to liquid crystalline state is extremely fast which completes in several seconds. The mesophase transition has a small Avrami parameter, n, of approximate 1. The isothermal crystallization of 253–258°C has been examined. The average value n is about 2.6 and the temperature-dependent rate constant k changes about two orders of magnitude in the crystallization temperature range of 6°C. The slope of ln k versus 1/(TcΔT) is calculated to be −2.4 × 105, which suggests nucleation control, via primary and/or secondary nucleation for the crystallization process. During the annealing process, a new phase (slow transition) is induced, which grows gradually with annealing time. At lower annealing temperatures (220–230°C), the slow transition process seems not to be influenced by the crystals formed during cooling process and its Avrami parameter n is ca. 0.3–0.4. However, the slow transition was hindered by the crystals formed during cooling process when annealed at higher temperature (230–240°C). © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A series of thermotropic liquid crystalline polyurethanes (LCPUs) were synthesized by the polyaddition reactions of 2,4‐toluene diisocyanate (2,4‐TDI) with 4,4′‐bis(6‐hydroxyhexoxy)biphenyl (BHHBP) and aliphatic diol. The intrinsic viscosities of the polymers were measured by Ubbelohde viscometer, and the chemical structure was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR). The LCPUs were examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM), wide angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The intrinsic viscosities were 0.56–0.83 dl/g. According to the melting point (Tm) and the isotropic temperature (Ti) of the LCPUs, the temperature range of the liquid crystalline phase became wider with increased number of methylene spacers in the polyurethane. The LCPUs exhibited a nematic phase with a threaded texture and had a wide mesophase temperature range. The decomposition temperature of the LCPUs was >300°C. On WAXD, the LCPUs give a dispersing peak at 2θ ≈ 20°, and a strong diffraction peak at 2θ ≈ 25°. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A series of copolyesters were prepared by the incorporation of p‐hydroxybenzoic acid (HBA), hydroquinone (HQ), and terephthalic acid (TA) into poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET). On the basis of viscosity measurements, high molar mass copolyesters were obtained in the syntheses, and 1H‐NMR analyses indicated the total insertion of comonomers. They exhibit nematic phase above melting temperature, as observed by polarized light microscope (PLM). Their crystallization and melting behaviors were also studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and wide angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD). It was found that these copolyesters are more crystalline than copolyesters prepared from PET and HBA. Introduction of HQ/TA disrupts longer rigid‐rod sequences formed by HBA, and thus enhances molecular motion and increases crystallization rate and crystallinity. Isothermal crystallization at solid phase polymerization conditions (up to 24 h at 200°C) resulted in increased copolymer randomness (by NMR) and higher melting point, the latter attributed to structural annealing. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A series of new liquid crystalline homopolymers, copolymers, and block copolymers were polymerized from styrene‐macroinitiator ( SMi ) and methacrylates with pendent 4,4′‐bis(biphenyl)fluorene ( M1 ) and biphenyl‐4‐ylfluorene ( M2 ) groups through atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The number‐average molecular weights (Mn) of polymers P1 ‐ P4 were 10,007, 14,852, 6,275, and 10,463 g mol?1 with polydispersity indices values of 1.21, 1.15, 1.31, and 1.22, respectively. All polymers exhibit the nematic phase. The thermal, mesogenic, and photoluminescent properties of all polymers were investigated. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report the synthesis and characterization of a series of novel mesogen‐jacketed liquid‐crystalline polymers, poly[2,5‐bis(4′‐alkoxycarbonylphenyl)styrene]s ( 1‐m , where m is the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl tails), along with the corresponding monomers, 2,5‐bis(4′‐alkoxycarbonylphenyl)styrenes ( 2‐m ), and their precursors, 2,5‐bis(4′‐alkoxycarbonylphenyl)toluenes ( 3‐m ). The influence of the tail length on the thermotropic properties of the two types of low‐molecular‐mass compounds and macromolecules was investigated with a combination of differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy, and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction techniques. Except for compound 3‐3 , which exhibited a monotropic nematic phase, all members of the low‐molar‐mass molecules developed no mesophase during both heating and cooling processes. The glass‐transition temperatures of the polymers decreased as the tail lengths increased. The 5% weight loss temperatures of all the polymers under a nitrogen atmosphere were above 360 °C, indicating quite high thermal stability. Although polymers 1‐1 and 1‐2 were non‐liquid‐crystalline, columnar nematic phases were observed for the remaining homopolymers with longer alkyl tails. The mesophases of 1‐3 to 1‐9 that developed at high temperatures remained upon cooling to room temperature, whereas those of 1‐10 to 1‐12 disappeared during the cooling process. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Based on 2, 5‐bis[(4‐alkoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrenes (M‐OCm, m is the number of the carbons of alkyl tails, m = 1, 4, and 18), three series of binary copolymers with high‐molecular weights, {poly(M‐OC1‐co‐M‐OC4), poly(M‐OC1‐co‐M‐OC18), and poly(M‐OC4‐co‐M‐OC18)} have been prepared via free‐radical polymerization. The random nature of the copolymers was expected on the basis of the assumed similar reactivities because of the analogous monomers. The phase behaviors of copolymers were studied by DSC, POM, and one‐dimensional wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction. The results showed that liquid crystalline (LC) phase structures of copolymers, containing smectic phase, reentrant isotropic phase, columnar phase. and isotropic phase, were strongly depended on the composition and the alkyl length due to the competing among the steric effect, the microphase separation and the driving force of the entropy. When one of them occupied a dominant position, the LC phase structure can be presented for the copolymers. Otherwise, the LC phase structure is lost despite the pair of corresponding homopolymers forming mesogenic structure. Therefore, through copolymerization, LC behavior of the mesogen‐jacketed liquid crystalline polymers can be greatly varied. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. 2,2‐Bis[4(4‐aminophenoxy)phenyl]phthalein‐3′,5′‐bis(trifluoromethyl)anilide (6FADAP), containing fluorine and phthalimide moieties, was synthesized via the Williamson ether condensation reaction from 1‐chloro‐4‐nitrobenzene and phenolphthalein‐3′,5′‐bis(trifluoromethyl)anilide, which was followed by hydrogenation. Monomers such as 2,2‐bis[4(4‐aminophenoxy)phenyl]phthalein‐anilide containing phthalimide groups and 2,2‐bis[4(4‐aminophenoxy)phenyl]phthalein containing only phthalein moieties were also synthesized for comparison. The monomers were first characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), 1H NMR, 19F NMR, elemental analysis, and titration and were then used to prepare polyimides with 2,2‐bis(3,4‐dicarboxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane dianhydride. The polyimides were designed to have molecular weights of 20,000 g/mol via off‐stoichiometry and were characterized by FTIR, NMR, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. Their solubility, water absorption, dielectric constant, and refractive index were also evaluated. The polyimides prepared with 6FADAP, containing fluorine and phthalimide moieties, had excellent solubility in N‐methylpyrrolidinone, N,N‐dimethylacetamide, tetrahydrofuran, CHCl3, tetrachloroethane, and acetone, and GPC analysis showed a molecular weight of 18,700 g/mol. The polyimides also exhibited a high glass‐transition temperature (290 °C), good thermal stability (~500 °C in air), low water absorption (1.9 wt %), a low dielectric constant (2.81), a low refractive index, and low birefringence (0.0041). © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. “Three‐arm star” poly[11‐(4′‐cyanophenyl‐4′′‐phenoxy)undecyl acrylate]s were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of 11‐(4′‐cyanophenyl‐4′′‐phenoxy)undecyl acrylate using two new trifunctional initiators: 1,3,5‐tri‐ (methyl 2‐bromopropionate)benzene and 2,4,6‐tri[4′‐methyl(2′′‐bromopropionate)phenoxymethyl]mesitylene. The polymers synthesized with 1,3,5‐tri(methyl 2‐bromopropionate)benzene (series II) contained 14–127 repeat units according to gel permeation chromatography relative to linear polystyrene (GPCPSt) and 13–271 repeat units according to GPC with a light scattering detector (GPCLS). Those synthesized with 2,4,6‐tri[4′‐methyl(2′′‐bromopropionate)phenoxymethyl]mesitylene (series III) contained 14–87 repeat units according to GPCPSt and 10–120 repeat units according to GPCLS. The absolute molecular weight, size, and shape of both series of polymers were characterized by light scattering in CH2Cl2, and their thermotropic behavior was analyzed using differential scanning calorimetry; both types of properties were compared to those of the other architectures, especially the corresponding three‐arm star poly[11‐(4′‐cyanophenyl‐4′′‐phenoxy)undecyl acrylate]s synthesized previously using 1,3,5‐trisbromomethylmesitylene as the initiator. The size and shape of the three‐arm star polymers in CH2Cl2 are similar, although the isotropization temperature in the solid state decreases and the breadth of the isotropization transition increases with increasing size and flexibility of the trifunctional core. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The aim of this work is to investigate the effect of consecutive shear on the crystallization of an amorphous aromatic polyimide (PI) derived from 3,3 ′ ,4,4 ′ ‐oxydiphthalic dianhydride (3,3 ′ ,4,4 ′ ‐ODPA) and 4,4 ′ ‐oxydianiline (ODA). At 260 °C, the increase of shear rate or shear time leads to the increase of crystallinity. Indeed, increasing shear rate can also accelerate the crystallization behavior. Moreover, it was found that a new melting peak appeared at higher temperature for long time or high rate sheared sample. The enhancement of crystallization behavior appears directly linked to the increase of crystal thickness. Particularly, the effect of shear temperature was investigated, and the results revealed that the crystallization of the PI was more sensitive to shear at 260 °C, which was 10° above the glass transition temperature (250 °C) of the PI. Possible mechanism was proposed to illustrate the effect of consecutive shear on the crystallization of the PI polymer. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Copolymers of a liquid crystalline monomer, 2,5‐bis[(4‐methoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrene (MPCS), with St and MMA were prepared by free radical polymerization at low conversion in chlorobenzene with 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as initiator. The copolymers of poly(MPCS‐co‐St) and poly(MPCS‐co‐MMA) were characterized by 1H NMR and GPC. The monomer reactivity ratios were determined by using the extended Kelen–Tudos (EKT) method. Structural parameters of the copolymers were obtained from the possibility statistics and monomer reactivity ratios. The influence of MPCS content in copolymers on the glass transition temperatures of copolymers was investigated by DSC. The thermal stabilities of the two copolymer systems increased with an increase of the molar fraction of MPCS in the copolymers. The liquid crystalline behavior of the copolymers was also investigated using DSC and POM. The results revealed that the copolymers with high MPCS molar contents exhibited liquid crystalline behaviors. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two kinds of polymethacrylates, 1 and 2 , with 2‐styrylpyridine and 4‐styrylpyridine moiety as a photoreactive group, which have a benzoate group as a mesogenic unit, and hexylene group as a flexible spacer in the same side chain, were synthesized to characterize their alignment behaviors. The UV absorption and fluorescence studies on the two polymers revealed that the latter polymer with the 4‐stylrylpyridine moiety is more aggregative than the former polymer with the 2‐styrylpyridine moiety. The polymer 1 showed a nematic phase structure at 170 °C, while 2 appeared in a partially bilayered smectic A phase structure in the homeotropic direction at 175 °C. The polymer 1 film generated an in‐plane alignment by a linearly polarized UV light irradiation and subsequent annealing, and its direction was parallel with respect to the irradiation. On the other hand, the polymer 2 film with the same treatments gave a high out‐of‐plane order parameter of 0.73 in a wide temperature range of 120–240 °C. The significant differences in the aggregation behavior, the liquid‐crystalline structure, and the alignment between the two polymers were discussed by the structural differences between the 2‐ and 4‐styrylpyridine moieties in the two polymers. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel sulfonated polyimides (SPIs) were prepared from 1,4,5,8‐naphthalenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (NTDA), 2,2′‐bis(4‐aminophenoxy)biphenyl‐5,5′‐disulfonic acid (oBAPBDS) with nonlinear configuration, and common nonsulfonated diamines. Water uptake (WU) in liquid and vapor, water stability, and proton conductivity σ of the resulting SPI membranes were investigated. They were soluble in m‐cresol and dimethylsulfoxide, and their WUs in liquid were much larger than those of the SPIs from other sulfonated diamines with linear configuration such as 4,4′‐bis(4‐aminophenoxy)biphenyl‐3,3′‐disulfonic acid (BAPBDS). NTDA‐oBAPBDS membrane was soluble in water at room temperature, whereas all the oBAPBDS‐based copolyimide membranes were insoluble in water and maintained mechanical strength after being soaked in distilled water at 80 °C for 40–1000 h. This much improved water stability was due to the enhanced solubility stability of membrane toward water. The water vapor sorption isotherms were rather similar between the SPIs with the nonlinear and linear configurations of sulfonated diamine moieties. The present SPIs with IECs of 1.8–2.6 meq/g, including NTDA‐BAPBDS, showed reasonably high proton conductivities under the highly humid conditions and roughly fell on the same σ–WU relation line. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 2‐Bromo‐1,3‐bis[2‐(2‐naphthyl)vinyl]benzene benzene hemisolvate, C30H21Br·0.5C6H6, (I), with two formula units in the asymmetric unit, exists in the crystal structure in a conformation in which the trans (2‐naphthyl)vinyl substituents on the central bromobenzene moiety appear as nearly fully extended `wings', while 9‐bromodinaphth[1,2‐a:2′,1′‐j]anthracene, C30H17Br, (II), adopts a highly nonplanar `manta‐ray' shape, with the H atoms in the interior of the molecule within van der Waals contact distances. The packing of the significantly twisted molecules of (I) generates large voids which are filled by benzene solvent molecules, while molecules of (II) stack compactly with all C—Br bonds parallel within the stack.  相似文献

A series of fully aromatic, thermotropic polyesters, derived from 3-phenyl-4,4′-biphenol (MPBP), nonlinear 4,4′-benzophenone dicarboxylic acid (4,4′-BDA), and various other comonomers was prepared by the melt polycondensation method and characterized for their thermotropic liquid crystalline behavior by a variety of experimental techniques. The homopolymer of MPBP with 4,4′-BDA had a fusion temperature (Tf) at 240°C, exhibited a nematic liquid crystalline phase, and had a narrow liquid crystalline range of 60°C. All of the copolyesters of MPBP with 4,4′-BDA and either 30 mol % 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (HBA), 6-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid (HNA) or 50 mol % terephthalic acid (TA), 2,6-naphthale-nedicarboxylic acid (2,6-NDA) and low Tf values in the range of 210–230°C, exhibited a nematic phase, and had accessible isotropization transitions (Ti) in the range of 320–420°C, respectively. As expected, each of them had a broader range of liquid crystalline phase than the homopolymer. They had a “frozen” nematic, glassy order as determined with the wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) studies. The morphology of each of the “as-made” polyesters had a fibrous structure as determined with the scanning electron microscopy (SEM), which arises because of the liquid crystalline domains. Moreover, they had higher glass transition temperatures (Tg) in the range of 167–190°C than those of other liquid crystalline polyesters, and excellent thermal stabilities (Td) in the range of 500–533°C, respectively. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

A series of poly(4,4′‐biphenylenealkenylene)s and copolymers were prepared by the acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) polymerization of 4,4′‐bis(alkenylene)1,1′‐biphenyls. Unsaturated polymers thus prepared were then hydrogenated to produce the corresponding saturated polymers. All the polymers were found to be thermotropic and to form solidlike smectic phases in melt. Their liquid crystallinity (LC) was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X‐ray diffractometry, and polarizing microscopy. We observed that one of the phenylene units of the biphenyl structure could selectively be hydrogenated at an elevated temperature. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Wholly aromatic, thermotropic homopolyesters, derived from 4,4′-biphenol, substituted biphenols, or 1,1′-binaphthyl-4,4′-diol and 3,4′-benzophenone dicarboxylic acid, and two copolyesters, each of which contained 30 mol % of 6-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid, were prepared by acidolysis polycondensation reactions and characterized for their liquid crystalline properties. The solubility behavior of these polymers has also been investigated. The two homopolymers of phenyl-substituted biphenols with 3,4′-benzophenone dicarboxylic acid were soluble in many common organic solvents. All of the homopolymers had lower Tm/Tf values than those with terephthalic acid, which was attributed to the incorporation of the asymmetric 3,4′-benzophenone dicarboxylate units in a head-to-head and head-to-tail fashion along the polyester chain. Two copolymers had lower Tm values than those of the respective homopolymers, as expected. They formed nematic phases which persisted up to 400°C, except those of phenyl-substituted biphenols with 3,4′-benzophenone dicarboxylic acid. Each of these two polymers also exhibited an accessible Ti transition, and had a broad range of LC phase. They had glass transition temperatures, Tg, in the range of 139-209°C and high thermal stabilities in the temperature range of 465-511°C. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

A series of azo monomers for polycondensation have been synthesized and characterized. These monomers, which contain electron-donor or acceptor substituents, have been condensed with aliphatic monomers to obtain two different series of aliphatic main-chain polyesters with pendant mesogenic groups. The polymers display nematic or smectic phases depending on the structural modifications of pendant mesogenic groups and the length of the flexible main-chain. In addition to these series, two polyesters with a high concentration of side pro-mesogenic groups have been synthesized. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

A series of organosoluble aromatic polyimides (PIs) was synthesized from 5,5′‐bis[4‐(4‐aminophenoxy)phenyl]‐4,7‐methanohexahydroindan (3) and commercial available aromatic dianhydrides such as 3,3′,4,4′‐biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA), 4,4′‐oxydiphthalic anhydride (ODPA), 4,4′‐sulfonyl diphthalic anhydride (SDPA), or 2,2′‐bis(3,4‐dicarboxyphenyl) hexafluoropropanic dianhydride (6FDA). PIs (IIIc–f), which were synthesized by direct polymerization in m‐cresol, had inherent viscosities of 0.83–1.05 dL/g. These polymers could easily be dissolved in N,N′‐dimethylacetamide (DMAc), N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone (NMP), N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF), pyridine, m‐cresol, and dichloromethane. Whereas copolymerization was proceeded with equivalent molar ratios of pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA)/6FDA, 3,3′,4,4′‐benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA)/6FDA, or BTDA/SDPA, or ½ for PMDA/SDPA, copolyimides (co‐PIs), derived from 3 and mixed dianhydrides, were soluble in NMP. All the soluble PIs could form transparent, flexible, and tough films, and they showed amorphous characteristics. These films had tensile strengths of 88–111 MPa, elongations at break of 5–10% and initial moduli of 2.01–2.67 GPa. The glass transition temperatures of these polymers were in the range of 252–311°C. Except for IIIe, the 10% weight loss temperatures (Td) of PIs were above 500°C, and the amount of carbonized residues of the PIs at 800°C in nitrogen atmosphere were above 50%. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A series of fully aromatic, thermotropic homopolyesters, derived from 3,4′-benzophenone dicarboxylic acid and various aromatic diols, was prepared by the melt polycondensation method and examined for thermotropic behavior by a variety of experimental techniques. The aromatic diols used in the study were hydroquinone, 2,6-, 1,4-, 1,5-, 2,3-, and 2,7-naphthalenediol isomers. All of the homopolyesters of 3,4′-benzophenone dicarboxylic acid with aromatic diols (except that with 2,7-naphthalenediol) formed a nematic LC phase in the melt. They had the glass transition temperatures (Tg) in the range of 133–164°C, the melting transitions (Tm) in the range 305–360°C and the high thermal stabilities (Td) in the range of 410–483°C. The 2,6-naphthalenediol based homopolymer had the highest Tm (360°C) and the 2,3-naphthalenediol based homopolymer had the lowest Tm (305°C) among all of the homopolymers of naphthalenediol isomers. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

This work reports the synthesis and characterization of diamantane‐based polyimides obtained from 4,9‐bis[4(3,4‐dicarboxyphenoxy)phenyl]diamantane dianhydride and various aromatic diamines. Interestingly, the diamantane‐based polyimides were very stable to hydrolysis. This novel polyimide exhibits a low dielectric constant (2.65–2.77), low moisture absorption (<0.67%), good solubility, high Tg and unusually high thermal stability. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) reveals that the diamantane‐based polyimides have high Tg ranging from 281 to 379 °C. The high‐temperature β1 subglass transition around 285 °C was observed in polyimide 6a derived from 2,2′‐bis(trifluoromethyl)benzidine. This class of novel diamantane‐based polyimide is very promising for electronic applications, because of its good mechanical properties, good thermal stability, low dielectric constant, excellent hydrolytic resistance, and low moisture absorption. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
