Iron(II) dichloride complexes bearing a tridentate nitrogen donor ligand were investigated for the homopolymerization of tert‐butyl acrylate after activation with methylaluminoxane. Two new complexes were synthesized, 2,6‐bis[1‐(cyclohexylimido)ethyl]pyridine iron chloride (FeCl2) and 2,6‐bis[1‐(isopropylimido)ethyl]pyridine FeCl2, and the single‐crystal X‐ray structure of the latter one was determined. Turnover frequencies of the catalysts during polymerization ranged from 36 to 241 cycles/mol/h. The obtained polymers exhibited weight‐average molecular weights ranging from 24,000 to 438,500 g/mol, and the molar mass distribution varied between 1.8 and 4.3. Activity of the catalytic system and the molar mass of the polymer are influenced by the ligand structure of the complexes as well as other polymerization conditions such as monomer concentration and temperature. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Small‐angle X‐ray scattering was used to investigate the nanostructures of complexes formed by slightly crosslinked anionic copolymer gels of poly(sodium methacrylate‐coN‐isopropylacrylamide) [P(MAA/NIPAM)] with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), and didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB), respectively, at room temperature (∼ 23°C). Several highly ordered supramolecular structures were observed in the polyelectrolyte gel–surfactant complexes. In P(MAA/NIPAM)–CTA systems, in sequence with decreasing charge density of the P(MAA/NIPAM) copolymer chains, structures of the Pm3n space group cubic, face‐centered cubic close packing of spheres, and hexagonal close packing of spheres were determined at a charge content of ≥ 75, 67, and 50%, respectively. The spheres and rods in these structures were the spherical and cylindrical micelles formed by the self‐assembly of CTA cations with their paraffin chains inside. Both the aggregation number and the size of the micelles decreased with a decreasing charge density of the copolymer chains. In the P(MAA/NIPAM)–DDA systems, the bilayer lamellar structures formed at charge contents ≥ 75% transferred to bicontinuous cubic structures of the Ia3d space group at charge contents of 50–67%. The rods in the Ia3d cubic structures were formed by the self‐assembly of double‐tailed DDA cations with polar moieties inside. The formation of these highly ordered structures were driven by both electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions of the charged copolymer chains/surfactants and the surfactants/surfactants inside the charged gels. The structures became less ordered by further decreasing the charge content of the P(MAA/NIPAM) chains. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 37: 2165–2172, 1999  相似文献

Reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) was applied to the copolymerization of styrene and maleic anhydride. The product had a low polydispersity and a predetermined molar mass. Novel, well‐defined polyolefin‐based block copolymers were prepared with a macromolecular RAFT agent prepared from a commercially available polyolefin (Kraton L‐1203). The second block consisted of either polystyrene or poly(styrene‐co‐maleic anhydride). Furthermore, the colored, labile dithioester moiety in the product of the RAFT polymerizations could be removed from the polymer chain by UV irradiation. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. We have examined the polymer/surfactant interaction in mixed aqueous solutions of cationic surfactants and anionic polyelectrolytes combining various techniques: tensiometry, potentiometry with surfactant-selective electrodes, and viscosimetry. We have investigated the role of varying polymer charge density, polymer concentration, surfactant chain length, polymer backbone rigidity, and molecular weight on the critical aggregation concentration (Cac) of mixed polymer/surfactant systems. The Cac of these systems, estimated from tensiometry and potentiometry, is found to be in close agreement. Different Cac variations with polymer charge density and surfactant chain length were observed with polymers having persistence lengths either smaller or larger than surfactant micelle size, which might reflect a different type of molecular organization in the polymer/surfactant complexes. The surfactant concentration at which the viscosity starts to decrease sharply is different from the Cac and probably reflects the polymer chain shrinkage due to surfactant binding.  相似文献

For the first time the possibility to obtain nanostructures by self‐assembly of chitosan polyampholytic derivative was demonstrated. The self‐assembly of N‐carboxyethylchitosan (CECh) took place only near its isoelectric point (pH 5.0–5.6). Out of the pH range 5.0–5.6, CECh aqueous solutions behaved as real solutions. Dynamic light scattering and atomic force microscopy analyses revealed that spherically shaped or rod/worm‐like nanosized assemblies were formed depending on the polymer molar mass, pH value, and polymer concentration. CECh of two different molar masses was studied in concentrations ranging from 0.01 to 0.1 mg/mL. The structures from CECh of weight‐average molar mass (Mw ) 4.5 × 103 g/mol were spherical regardless the pH and polymer concentration. In contrast, CECh of high molar mass (HMMCECh, Mw = 6.7 × 105 g/mol) formed self‐assemblies with spherical shape only at pH 5.0 and 5.6. At pH 5.2 spherical nanoparticles were obtained only at polymer concentration 0.01 mg/mL. The mean hydrodynamic diameter (Dh) of the obtained nanoparticles was in the range from 30 to 980 nm. On increasing the concentration, aggregation of the nanoparticles appeared, and at HMMCECh concentration 0.1 mg/mL, rod/worm‐like structures were obtained. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The swelling behavior of polyelectrolyte gels based on poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (copolymers of diallyldimethylammonium chloride and acrylamide with the variable composition) and poly(methacrylic acid, sodium salt) in the presence of organic water soluble dyes (alizarin, naphthol blue black, rhodamine) was studied. The collapse of the polyelectrolyte gels in the presence of oppositely charged dyes together with the effective absorption of dyes was observed. The shrinking degree and the dye absorption by the gel depend on the charges of the polymer network and the dye, and also on the dye concentration. Stability of the gel–dye complexes in a salt solution of NaCl and Al2(SO4)3 was studied. It was shown that the complex stability in the salt solution depends on the charge density of the polymer chains forming the gel. The increase of charge density of polymer generally leads to the enhancement of the complex stability. For the systems with the fraction of charged poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) monomer units above 0.5 the release of alizarin to the external solution of Al2(SO4)3 reservoir is practically completely suppressed. The obtained results show that oppositely charged dyes are generally from stable complexes with polyelectrolyte gels. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Low‐charge‐density amphoteric copolymers and terpolymers composed of acrylamide, (3‐acrylamidopropyl)trimethyl ammonium chloride, and the amino acid derived monomers (e.g., N‐acryloyl valine, N‐acryloyl alanine, and N‐acryloyl aspartate) were prepared via free‐radical polymerization in aqueous media to yield terpolymers with random charge distributions and homogeneous compositions. Sodium formate (NaOOCH) was employed as a chain transfer agent during the polymerization to suppress gel effects and broadening of the molecular weight distribution. Terpolymer compositions were determined by 13C and 1H NMR spectroscopy. Terpolymer molecular weights and polydispersity indices were obtained via size exclusion chromatography/multi‐angle laser light scattering, and hydrodynamic diameter values were obtained via dynamic light scattering. The solution properties of low‐charge‐density amphoteric copolymers and terpolymers have been studied as a function of solution pH, ionic strength, and polymer concentration. The low‐charge‐density terpolymers display excellent solubility in deionized (DI) water with no phase separation. The charge‐balanced terpolymers exhibit antipolyelectrolyte behavior at pH values ≥(6.5 ± 0.2). As solution pH is decreased, these charge‐balanced terpolymers become increasingly cationic because of the protonation of the anionic repeat units. Charge‐imbalanced terpolymers generally demonstrate polyelectrolyte behavior, although the effects of intramolecular electrostatic interactions (e.g., polyampholyte effects) on the hydrodynamic volume are evident at certain values of solution pH and salt concentration. The aqueous solution behavior (i.e., globule‐to‐coil transition at the isoelectric point in the presence of salt and globule elongation with increasing charge asymmetry) of the terpolymers in the dilute regime correlates well with that predicted by the polyampholyte solution theories of Dobrynin and Rubinstein as well as Kantor and Kardar. Examination of comonomer charge density, hydrogen‐bonding ability, and spacer group (e.g., the moiety separating the ionic group from the polymer chain) indicates that conformational restrictions of the amino acid comonomers result in increased chain stiffness and higher solution viscosities in DI water and brine solutions. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A hydrodynamic scattering treatment of interacting polymer chains is extended to obtain the five‐point chain–chain–chain–chain–chain hydrodynamic interaction tensor. The tensor is used to calculate the second‐order concentration correction to the self‐diffusion coefficient of a polymer in solution. The self‐similarity assumption of the hydrodynamic scaling model of polymer dynamics is tested against these calculations. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The solution properties of low‐charge‐density ampholytic terpolymers of acrylamide, sodium 3‐acrylamido‐3‐methylbutanoate, and (3‐acrylamidopropyl)trimethylammonium chloride were studied as functions of the solution pH, ionic strength, and polymer concentration. Terpolymers with low charge densities, large charge asymmetries, or both exhibited excellent solubility in deionized (DI) water, and higher charge density terpolymers were readily dispersible in DI water; however, the higher charge density terpolymer solutions separated into polymer‐rich and polymer‐poor phases upon standing over time. Charge‐balanced terpolymers exhibited antipolyelectrolyte behavior at pH values greater than or equal to the ambient pH (6.5 ± 0.2); the same terpolymers behaved increasingly as cationic polyelectrolytes with decreasing solution pH because of the protonation of the 3‐acrylamido‐3‐methylbutanoate (AMB) repeat units. Unbalanced terpolymers generally exhibited polyelectrolyte behavior, although the effects of intramolecular electrostatic attractions (i.e., polyampholyte effects) on the hydrodynamic volume of the unbalanced terpolymer coils were evident at certain values of the solution pH and salt concentration. The dilute‐solution behavior of the terpolymers correlated well with the behavior predicted by several polyampholyte solution theories. In the semidilute regime, solution viscosities increased with increasing terpolymer charge density, and this indicated a significant enhancement of the solution viscosity by intermolecular electrostatic associations. Upon the addition of NaCl, semidilute‐solution viscosities tended to decrease because of the disruption of the intermolecular electrostatic associations. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The copolymerization of propylene with 1‐octene was carried out with rac‐dimethylsilylbis(2,4,6‐trimethylindenyl)zirconium dichloride as a catalyst activated by methylaluminoxane (MAO) and an MAO/triisobutylaluminum mixture. The copolymerization conditions, including the polymerization temperature, Al/Zr molar ratio, and 1‐octene concentration in the feed, significantly influenced the catalyst activity, 1‐octene incorporation, polymer molecular weight, and melting temperature. The addition of 1‐octene to the polymerization system caused a decrease in the activity, whereas the melting temperature and intrinsic viscosity of the polymer increased. The microstructure of the propylene–1‐octene copolymer was characterized by 13C NMR, and the reactivity ratios of the copolymerization were estimated from the dyad distribution of the monomer sequences. The amount of regioirregular structures arising from 2,1‐ and 1,3‐misinserted propylene decreased as the 1‐octene content increased. The influence of the propagation chain on the polymerization mechanism is proposed to be the main reason for the changes in the reactivity ratios and regioirregularity with the polymerization conditions. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Living free‐radical polymerization of methacrylate and styrenic monomers with ionic surfactants was carried out with reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer in miniemulsion with different surfactant types and concentrations. The previously reported problem of phase separation was found to be insignificant at higher surfactant concentrations, and control of the molar mass and polydispersity index was superior to that of published miniemulsion systems. Cationic and anionic surfactants were used to examine the validity of the argument that ionic surfactants interfere with transfer agents. Ionic surfactants were suitable for miniemulsion polymerization under certain conditions. The colloidal stability of the miniemulsions was consistent with the predictions of a specific model. The living character of the polymer that comprised the latex material was shown by its transformation into block copolymers. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) has been used to study the nanostructures of complexes formed by slightly crosslinked anionic copolymer gels of poly(sodium methacrylate‐co‐N‐isopropylacrylamide) [P(MAA/NIPAM)] interacting with cetylpyridinium bromide (CPB), and alkyltrimethylammonium bromide (CnTAB, 10 ≤n ≤ 18), respectively. Both the charge density of polyelectrolyte gels and the surfactant alkyl tail length could induce the phase structure transition from Pm3n space group cubic to hexagonal close packing of spheres (HCP), while the different polar groups of pyridinium and trimethylammonium with the same hydrophobic cetyl chain in surfactants had no significant effects on the structures of complexes formed with the same gels. The highly ordered structures were shown to be formed by the self‐assembly of ionic surfactants inside the anionic gel network, driven by both electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions. Freeze drying the water‐equilibrated complexes could collapse the formed ordered structures. However, the highly ordered structures could be restored after the dried complexes were reswollen by water under the same conditions, indicating that the highly ordered water‐equilibrated complexes were thermodynamically stable. Reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer polymerization has been successfully applied to polymerize acrylonitrile with dibenzyl trithiocarbonate as the chain‐transfer agent. The key to success is ascribed to the improvement of the interchange frequency between dormant and active species through the reduction of the activation energy for the fragmentation of the intermediate. The influence of several experimental parameters, such as the molar ratio of the chain‐transfer agent to the initiator [azobis(isobutyronitrile)], the molar ratio of the monomer to the chain‐transfer agent, and the monomer concentration, on the polymerization kinetics and the molecular weight as well as the polydispersity has been investigated in detail. Matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry and 1H NMR analyses have confirmed the chain‐end functionality of the resultant polymer. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hyperbranched polymers consisting of aromatic or aliphatic polyether cores and epoxide chain‐end peripheries were prepared by proton transfer polymerization. AB2 diepoxyphenol monomer 1 proved to be well suited for the preparation of hyperbranched aromatic polymer 2 by this proton transfer polymerization. The use of chloride‐ion catalysis, rather than conventional base catalysis, for the preparation of polymers from diepoxyphenol 1 offered a unique method to control the ultimate molecular weight of the polymer product through variations of the initial concentration of monomer 1 in tetrahydrofuran. An alternative route to hyperbranched polyether epoxies made use of commercially available or easily prepared aliphatic monomers of the types AB2, AB3, and A2 + B3. Although these aliphatic polymerizations can be initiated with a base, chloride‐ion catalysis proved most effective for controlling the polymerization. The hyperbranched epoxies were characterized by NMR spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, and multi‐angle laser light scattering. Chemical modification of the polymers after polymerization was carried out via nucleophilic addition on the epoxide groups or derivatization of the hydroxy substituents within the hyperbranched polymer structure. Spectroscopic measurements suggested that some such ring‐opened materials may adopt reverse unimolecular micellar structures in appropriate solution environments. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The formation of polyelectrolyte complexes of linear copolymers and hydrogels based on copolymers of 2‐[(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium chloride with N‐isopropylacrylamide (MADQUAT–NIPAAM) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) has been studied. The composition of the copolymer has been found to affect the composition of the polyelectrolyte complexes significantly, and the molecular weight of PAA influences their aggregation stability. Hydrogels of MADQUAT–NIPAAM immersed in solutions of PAA undergo contraction because of the formation of gel–polymer complexes. The rate of contraction and the final swelling degree of the gel–polymer complexes depend on the concentration of PAA in solution and its molecular weight. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. N‐Acryloylglycinamide was polymerized via the reversible addition fragmentation transfer process without sacrificing its key property, the upper critical solution temperature in water. This could be achieved by choosing an appropriate nonionic initiator [2,2′‐azobis(4‐methoxy‐2.4‐dimethyl valeronitrile) (V‐70)] and nonionic chain‐transfer agent (cyanomethyl dodecyl trithiocarbonate). A good molar mass control was accomplished as proved by the linear increase of molar mass with conversion, a chain extension experiment, and low dispersity. The influence of molar mass, polymer end groups, or salt concentration on the cloud point was analyzed by turbidimetry. Polymer end groups exerted a distinct effect on the cloud points, whereas the influence increased with decreasing molar masses. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Rheological measurements, confocal laser scanning microscopy, and x-ray diffraction were used to study the influence of dodecylammonium chloride (DDACl) on the gelation of κ- and ι-carrageenans. The increase of DDACl concentration led to the changes of gel structure from nano to macro-scale. At the macroscopic level, two phase regions have been differentiated; one below the surfactant micellar region containing turbid gel and the other in the micellar region characterized by gel collapsing. The effect of monomer DDACl concentration on gel structure at the nano level was detected by rheological measurements. All gel samples exhibited shear thinning behavior, well fitted by power law equation, indicating that they maintain mainly carrageenan rheological properties. The change of flow behavior parameters with increasing DDACl concentration might be ascribed to the formation of surfactant domains inside gel networks. Progressive increase of surfactant concentration caused gradual break down of the gel structure and enhanced ordering of surfactant molecules. In the vicinity of the critical micelle concentration, the appearance of microphase separated domains, visualized by confocal laser scanning microscopy indicated pronounced structural changes of both, κ- and ι-carrageenan gels. X-ray diffraction of collapsed gels revealed the formation of a bilayered surfactant structures in conjunction with the carrageenan chains. The increase of DDACl concentration enhanced ordering and growth of mesostructural domains consisting of stacked bilayers. Both, local ordering of bilayers and regular stacking of lamellae revealed stronger electrostatic interactions between surfactant and carrageenan with higher charge density on chains.  相似文献

A nonequilibrium thermodynamic approach has been developed for describing the emergence of fiber morphologies from a liquid crystalline polymer solution undergoing solvent evaporation, including fibrillar structures, concentric rings, and spiral structures. We utilized Matsuyama–Kato free energy for main‐chain liquid crystalline polymer (MCLCP) solutions, which is an extension of Maier–Saupe theory for nematic ordering and incorporates a chain‐stiffening, combined with Flory‐Huggins free energy of mixing. Temporal evolution of the concentration and nematic order parameters pertaining to the above free energy density of liquid crystalline polymer solution was simulated in the context of time‐dependent Ginzburg–Landau theory coupled with the solvent evaporation rate equation under the quasi‐steady state assumption. The emerged morphological patterns are discussed in relation to the phase diagram of the MCLCP solution and the rate of solvent evaporation. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel soluble, reactive ladderlike 4,4′‐phenylene ether‐bridged polyvinylsiloxane (L) was synthesized successfully for the first time by a stepwise coupling polymerization (SCP) including hydrolysis and polycondensation. The monomer, 4,4′‐bis(vinyldimethoxysilyl)phenylene ether (M), was synthesized by Grignard reaction. The structures of the monomer and the polymer were characterized by infrared spectrometry (IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR, 13C NMR, 29Si NMR), mass spectrometry (MS), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X‐ray diffraction (XRD), and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). It is proposed from the characterization data that the polymer possesses an ordered ladderlike structure. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 38: 2702–2710, 2000  相似文献

Nineteen commercial high‐density polyethylene resins made with different polymerization processes and catalyst types were analyzed by high‐temperature size exclusion chromatography and crystallization analysis fractionation. The information obtained with these characterization techniques on the polymer chain structure was correlated to environmental stress cracking resistance. Environmental stress cracking resistance increases when the molecular weight and concentration of polymer chains that crystallize in trichlorobenzene between 75 and 85 °C increase. Polymer chains present in this crystallization range are assumed to act as tie molecules between crystal lamellae. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
